Merrick Back Country #ChewyInfluencer

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. Kittens!!! Have we had a week or what? Storms all the time and then that nasty ole lawn crew came and scared mine’s sissy.

Dezi laying atop the Liberty cat tree with her mouth open

Me wasn’t scared, Raena!!! Me was just tryin’ to be safe. You know one of our sweet furiends pointed out that our hearin’ is way better than human peeps ears, so all that racket just might bust our ear drums ifin we hang out too close to it.

Um  Sure sissy, whatever you say.

(Raena meows under her breath) I’s don’t think so, sissy, but that’s a good one.

Anyways, at least we got some treats after the lawn crew left. And we even had a sun puddle fur a minute this meownin’. We wasn’t sure we were gonna get any based on all those storm warnings last night. Ya’ reckon we might get some more of those tasty treats today, sissy?

Merrick Back Country Grain Free freeze dried chicken recipe treats

Me bets ifin we give mommy “The Face” we’re sure to get some. Furst, we oughtta tell everypawdy ‘bout ‘em.

Raena with Merrick Freeze dried cat treats

You’re right sissy, we should. We were so excited to see treats on the review list this month from Chewy.com. We weren’t aware that Merrick made freeze dried raw treats, so we just had to try ‘em. We got the Grain-Free Real Chicken recipe in a 1 ounce bag. They also come in Grain-Free Real Salmon fur $2.72 a bag. It is a small bag, but the bag is filled to the top. And comparin’ freeze dried treat purrices, they’re purretty reasonably purriced.

Yeah Raena, they are. But they’re more like a topper than a true freeze dried treat like we’re used too. Most of the freeze dried treats we eat are 1 ingredient, like chicken breast or chicken liver. So let’s take a look at the ingredient list of the Merrick Back Country Grain-Free Freeze Dried Real Chicken Recipe.

Ingredients

  1. Chicken, Chicken Liver, Dried Peas, Dried Potatoes, Gelatin, Salt, Mixed Tocopherols (Preservative).

Caloric Content

  1. 3,805 kcal/kg, 3 kcal/treat

Yep sissy, and they’re shaped in little tubes that can be fairly easily broken or crushed and sprinkled over food. Let’s see what Chewy lists as the key benefits.

  • Protein-rich treat

  • Real whole pieces of raw, freeze-dried chicken

  • Freeze-dried pieces lock in all the nutritional benefits of chicken in its natural state, in an easily digestible format

  • More nutrients are absorbed, and fewer pass through

  • Morsels are also loaded with incredible, naturally fresh flavor cats love

  • Cautions

    Not for human consumption.

As you can see, there’s none of those questionable ingredients overtly mentioned in the ingredient list. We’re not sure what pawrt of the chicken is used, but they ain’t chicky breasts fur sure. So, let’s get to the taste testin’. After the lawn crew cleared out, things settled down a bit and mommy gave us a few of these Merrick Back Country chicken treats. At furst, I’s wasn’t sure what to do with them. They rolled nicely, and made fur great battin’ purractice. But then mommy broke a couple into smaller pieces and offured them to me in her hand. I’s took mine’s furst bite and then mine’s second and so on. They may not be pure white chicky breasts, but they are purretty tasty. I’s would have to give them 3 paws up. Sissy, what did you think?

Dezi eating treats atop the Liberty cat tree

Well Raena, me knew ‘zactly what to do with them. Me ate ‘em all up. You’re right, they’re fur sure not chicky breasts, but they are purretty tasty indeed. Me does purrfur the single ingredient freeze dried treat, but these ain’t bad fur havin’ peas and taters in ‘em. Me gives them 3 paws up too. And, cuz of the purrice, those lookin’ fur an affurdable freeze dried treat fur your furries, might wanna check these out.

Raena eats treats on the Liberty cat tree

Fanky fanks sissy. Mommy says cuz they’re easy to break or crumble, and cuz we ate ‘em, she would give them a thumb up too. And as always, Chewy sent ‘em in a great box with packin’ paper too. Chewy has lots of great purroducts fur your furry, feathered and scaled furmily members. They offur speedy furee shippin’ on all orders $49.00 and over, and a flat rate fee fur all other orders. Fanky fanks sissy. We also wanna remind everypawdy that we were recently innerviewed by our sweet furiend Valentine. He posted the furst half of the innerview last Caturday. Ifin ya’ missed it, you can read it here. And tomorrow, he’ll be postin’ the “Rest of the Story”. MOL  Don’t worry, we’ll remind ya’ tomorrow too. He asked some great questions that some of ya’ might not know ‘bout us. I’s gotta go now, and see ifin we can meow mommy outta some more of those treats.

Chatting Cats: Run For Your Life, the Lawn Crew’s Here

(Dezi sits quietly eating her breakfast, while Raena gazes intently out the front door from her perch. Seeing something in the distance, Raena sits up with her ears pointed towards the front at alert. Suddenly, Dezi hears the loud familiar roar of the lawn crew’s terrible and possible cat eating machines.

Dezi jumping over a box and shipping paper

Run fur your life Raena!!! They’re here!!!

(Dezi meows as she runs down the hall leaving a half eaten bite on the floor)

(Raena runs after Dezi in a haze and meows)

          What?! Why?! Who?! Where?!

(Raena stops at the end of the hallway at the bedroom door and looks back towards the living room and now closed front door. Raena hears a familiar voice piercing through the commotion of all the loud machines.)

Raena sits on small perch at door

Dezi!!! Raena!!! Girls, come eat your breakfast. I won’t let those stupid lawn men get ya’ll. You’ve got nothin’ to fear. Come on girls, I’ve closed the door. It’s safe. Come and eat your brekky.

(Raena appears first looking puzzled at why the front door is closed. None the less, she moseys over and takes a few bites of her breakfast and rubs against mommy’s legs to get a little loving. Dezi emerges from the bedroom with her fur all in a ruff and paces back and forth in front of her plate and Raena’s.)

 Dezi and Raena eat

It’s okay Dezi, You’re safe. I love you darlin’. Just eat your breakfast and ignore those silly men out there in the rain.

(Dezi takes a few bites and suddenly hears the sound of the leaf blower on the front porch trying to blow the wet leaves around)

Run fur your life!!!

(Dezi meows as she runs down the hallway again. Again, Raena runs after her, and again, she stops at the end of the hallway at the bedroom door and then looks back at mommy)

Raena on the Liberty Cat Tree

Sissy, all this runnin’ is makin’ mine’s tummy rumble. I’s don’t think mommy’s gonna be very happy ifin I’s chuck mine’s brekky all over the floor. Why are we runnin’ anyways? Those silly men can’t get past mommy. You know how mommy is, she barely cracks the door open when those kind’a peeps come knockin’. And so far, I’s not heard any thunder boomers. So the way I’s see it, is, it’s all good and we should just go and eat. C’mon, let’s go eat.

(Raena takes a few steps toward the living room and looks back

Sissy? Are you in there? Are you lissenin’ to me?

 Raena sits in hallway

(Dezi meows from UTB <under the bed>)

Me heard ya’ Raena. You’s go ahead and eat ifin ya’ want. Me’s gonna stay here a little longer. Me thinks me sees somethin’ that requires some more investigatin’.

          (Raena meows excitedly)

What do ya’ see sissy? Is it another one of those flyin’ yucky bugs like I’s found the other day?

(Raena runs UTB where Dezi is)

(Dezi hisses so loudly mommy can hear it in the living room over all the noisy lawn crew machines and the girls hear a voice from the living room)

     Girls, play nice!!!

Dezi and Raena sitting outside bathroom looking surprised.

Sorry mommy. No Raena, me didn’t find a moth. Why are you still here anyways? Me thought you were gonna go eat your brekky?.

I’s was sissy, but you said you found somethin’ and I’s thought you might need mine’s help.

Well, me doesn’t. Me’s been doin’ this a lot longer than you have, so me’s sure me can investigate it all by meself.

Raena lays on the Liberty cat tree

Well, okay sissy. But ifin It, whatever It is, gets ya’, don’t say I’s didn’t try to help. I’s gonna go eat mine’s brekky now. I’s don’t hear those noisy machines anymore anyhow.

(Raena heads back to the living room to eat her breakfast, and Dezi moves to the bedroom door and lays down looking toward the closed door. Raena meows loudly from the living room)

Hey Dezi, the lawn crew’s fur sure gone. Mommy says she’s fixin’ to open the door so you can see.

(Raena starts her head bob and bite over her plate)

(Mommy crawls to the door to open it and sees Dezi at the edge of the bedroom and calls to her)

C’mon Dezi, it’s okay. They’re gone now, so come eat your brekky.

Me’s comin’ mommy. Me was just keepin’ you safe from the UTB monster. Do you need some help crawlin’ back to the sittin’ lift chair?

Thank you sweety. I really appreciate you keepin’ me and your sisfur safe. Now you come eat brekky and let me keep you safe darlin’, okay?. I can get to my chair by myself, you just eat.

Dezi atop the Liberty Cat tree

(Dezi eats a few bites and then heads up the cat tree for a short morning nap)

What a meownin’ we’ve had. Me will never unnerstand those stupid lawn peeps tryin’ to mow durin’ the storms. They sure do make a mess. Fank the cats our little birdies already flew off from their nest on our porch. Me thinks we deserve some treats today.

Cat grass in a tine from Valentine

Treats? Did somepawdy say Treats? I’s want some Treats. How ‘bout our grass? Is that grass Valentine sent us ready yet? Did we get any Treats in that Chewy box the other day?

Dezi sits atop the Liberty cat tree

Yep Raena, mommy said our grass is almost ready. Me can’t wait to munch down on a few blades of that tasty green grass. And we did get treats to review this month. Let’s go make “The Face”, so mommy will give us some. And then me’s gonna take another nap. But befur me furgets, we have a winner fur the Animal Hearted Gift Card. Service Cats: Going For A Walk When You’re In A Wheelchair

Welcome to another Service Cat Monday. Grab your coffee, tea, coke (soda pop) or whatever your purrfered drink is and pull up a chair. Today we’re gonna be lookin’ at leash trainin’ and basic commands from a different purr-spective. Befur we move on tho’, we’d like to reiterate a sentiment from our last Service Cat Monday posty. After readin’ some of the comments, we wondered ifin some had actually read the post?. So again, THERE IS NO BAD CAT!!!  CATS DO NOT ACT OUT OF SPITE!!! NOT ALL CATS OF A SPECIFIC COLOR PATTERN ACT THE SAME WAY!!!

Dezi laying in cat tree in new harness

Now, as with all our Service Cat Monday postys, the followin’ will be written in human English fur translator and reader ease. Our posts are not meant to be a step by step trainin’ manual, as trainin’ is all ‘bout Repetition and Rewards. Our posts consist of Tips, Tricks and Techniques used/or developed by mommy throughout her many years of trainin’ animals, cats in purr-ticular. Ifin you’ve missed any of the posts in this series, you can ketch up by clickin’ the links at the bottom of this or any Service Cat post.

 Dezi outside in walking harness

MeOW, Our disclaimer seems to get longer and longer each week?. Anyways, we got a question from a puppy owner that we felt needed to be addressed before the puppy became a full grown untrained/misbehaving dog. The question was: “How do you train a puppy/dog to heel while on crutches or in a wheelchair? How do you keep said puppy/dog from running into the wheelchair’s wheels and getting tangled up?” Being disabled and using a cane/wheelchair herself, mommy realized she had been remiss in dealing with training issues for a fairly large part of the population; the disabled. Mommy says you don’t realize how tricky every day living can be when you lose a basic ability/motor function. The whole world is set up for fully functional people. However, as medicine improves, both humans and animals are living longer. And, as technology advances, there becomes more ways people can have accidents and/or become disabled, even if only temporarily; such as after a surgery.  Fur the purr-puss of this post, we’re assuming kitty or doggy is already trained to wear a harness or collar with a leash attached. If not, please see our post “Getting Kitty Ready for an Outing”.

Raena goes for a walk outside

Just because someone is disabled doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be able to have a pet. That being said, All kittens and puppies need some basic training. As anyone who has ever had their life blest with a kitten or puppy knows, they are full of energy and into everything. It’s the nature of youth. For their safety and yours, they need to learn the rules and at least a few basic commands. Before we proceed, we’d like to remind everyone that there are often puppy classes offered for free or a small fee by some of the local pet stores or humane societies. These classes help you bond with puppy and learn how to teach them to sit, stay, heel and usually a few tricks, along with socialization techniques. These classes are usually very beneficial, and you can find out what’s offered in your area by calling around or looking online. Your VET might even be a great resource in finding a puppy class.

But, let’s say the classes didn’t work for you; or due to your disability or lack of classes in your area, you need to train puppy yourself. And of course, everybody knows, there are few if any kitten training classes; so training kitty is all up to you. We stated last week, that one should NEVER walk a puppy or kitten while on crutches. That’s an accident waiting to happen. Crutches are very often a temporary situation, so we would highly recommend having someone else walk puppy until you’re off the crutches or at the very least can get by with a cane. Clicker training is very effective for puppies and dogs, and even some cats. Before you start training, you need to decide which Reward system you want to use. Mommy highly recommends “Love Rewards” because it’s simple and you don’t have to remember to have treats on you all the time.

Raena goes for a walk outside

Raena in a “Sit & Stay”

Because we don’t recommend walking a kitten/puppy while on crutches, we’re not even going to address it further. However, if you’re on a cane or in a wheelchair, there’s no reason you can’t train a kitten or puppy to behave properly. Of course you want to start with the “Scent Me Up” game with kittens, and you can even do it with puppies. They don’t have the same scent glands, but will enjoy the time and love you spend with them. The next step is “Sit”. If using treats as rewards, show the animal the treat, let them sniff it and then say “Sit”. Move the treat over the animals head. As the treat moves further back, the animal should respond by sitting and tilting their head to follow the treat. Have them hold that position for 5 seconds before giving them the treat. DO NOT give the treat if puppy/kitty stands back up; instead, start over from, the beginning. If you choose “Love Rewards”, move the empty hand over the animal’s head and after 5 seconds slowly drop the hand to pet the animal and tell them how good they are/proud you are/how much you love them, etc.. If the behind doesn’t go down, gently push the animal’s behind down with your free hand as your other hand goes over the head, while saying “Sit”. Repeat these steps until kitty/puppy sits every time.

Dezi walks outside in her harness on a leash

The next step is “Stay”. While the animal is sitting, put your hand in front of their face and say “Stay”. Don’t leave the room, but walk a few feet away while repeating “Stay”. After 5 seconds, reward kitten/puppy and continue to repeat until “Sit and Stay” are performed every time. “Heel” is basically the “Sit and Stay” command performed together while on a walk, where the animal sits by your feet. However, if you’re in a wheelchair, you don’t want kitty/puppy by the wheels where they can get tangled up and choke or get run over. We recommend a retractable leash so the animal can get far enough in front of you in order to avoid the leash getting caught in the wheels (3 to 4 feet should be sufficient to keep the animal safe and allow you to have control of the animal). Mommy also prefers the animal to walk in front of a cane as well. This will help keep the animal from winding around the cane and tripping you. Anytime the animal gets excited and runs back to you, STOP and repeat the “Sit and Stay” command. Mommy prefers the animal to “Sit and Stay” directly in front of your feet or the foot rest on a wheelchair. Again, this keeps the animal away from the cane or wheels. Don’t forget to offer Rewards and then begin your walk again. Remember to Reward any successful walk.

When starting the walk, Do Not allow kitty/doggy to rush out the door, but Do let them calmly exit in front of you. Start at the door with the “Sit and Stay” command and then say, “Walk”. This of course only works if you’re on a cane or an electric wheelchair. If you’re in a manual wheelchair, we don’t recommend walking an untrained kitten/puppy. Unless you have help, we would highly recommend adopting an older kitten/puppy that already has some experience with basic commands and walking on a leash. If you’re in a manual wheelchair, you’ll need to get an appropriate lead harness that can be tethered to the frame of the wheelchair. This is not a first time training harness! Puppy should already be comfortable walking on a leash and performing the “Sit and Stay” commands because it is hands free and you have very little actual control over the animal. DO NOT expect any cat, small dog or puppy to be able to pull you in the wheelchair. But, this type of harness will allow the dog to walk safely in front of you while allowing you to keep your hands free to propel the chair forward yourself. The above link is just an example. We’ve not used or tried the harness and therefor cannot endorse it.

Dezi lays on Liberty cat tree

Well, we’re gonna wrap it up. We do hope this helps some of you. Being disabled doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy pet ownership, you just have to be more aware of the added dangers to you and your pet. Take precautions to keep your pet safe around any medical equipment you might have while making sure they’re comfortable with it. We know this post was more tailored to the doggies, but as you can see from the fotos, more and more kitties are goin’ fur walks these days, so we hope to hear some of you kitties are enjoyin’ your leash time with your humans. We’ll be addressin’ some aggression issues next week, so stay tuned. And ifin you have any trainin’ questions, general questions, or suggestions, leave them in the comments or send us an email. And ‘member, ifin you’ve missed any of our Service Cat Monday postys you can ketch up by clickin’ the links below.

Blest Sunday purple kitty clip art graphic

I’s luvs Blest Sunday too Dezi. We really are blest to have so much. Our furiend Valentine recently innerviewed us, and it reminded us just how blest we really are. You can check out the furst installment here.

Dezi lays atop the Liberty Cat Tree

Yeah Raena, what an innerview. Valentine asked a lot of great questions. Of course we meowed ‘bout how it is bein’ Service Kitties, but he also asked a lot of questions, we bet peeps have wondered ‘bout and just haven’t asked. As a matter of fact, he asked so many good questions, he’s gonna post it in pawrts.

Ya’ reckon he also decided to do it that way cuz we’re kinda wordy sissy?

Wordy? Who’ve you been meowin’ too Raena? We’re not wordy, we just have lots to say. ‘Purrtant stuffs. Wordy means you’re meowin’ nonsense; and we don’t meow nonsense?.

Raena looks out from the top of the Liberty cat tree

Of course I’s agree with you sissy. But, we have been called wordy and long winded befur. I’s don’t know why anypawdy would say that, but mommy says it’s true.

Well, that’s okay Raena. Peeps can say whatever they want. Mommy says us Southerners have lots of colorful ways to express ourselves. So, we’re just doin’ what comes naturally. MOL

Raena bites the Cat grass pail from Valentine

Well sissy, did you see what Valentine and his mommy sent us as a fanky fank ya’?

Dezi watches Raena with the cat grass kit from atop the Liberty cat tree

Me sure did Raena. Mommy said she’d never seen such a cute little grass kit. We’d never heard of Maggies Micro-greens befur, but we can’t wait fur our grass to start growin’. Fank you so much Valentine, we do luv grass.

Raena plays with the cat grass kit from Valentine

That’s fur sure sissy. I’s couldn’t hardly wait fur mommy to get it planted up. ‘Pawrently, we have to wait fur it to sprout now. Kinda like when mommy grows her salads in the Aerogarden.

Dezi lays atop the Liberty Cat tree and watches Raena with the cat grass kit from Valentine

Me sure hopes we don’t have to wait that long Raena. Fanks to awnty Anonymous, mommy’s got more salad greens to plant fur herself. Looks like we’ll all be eatin’ salads befur too long. MOL

Awnty Anonymous also sent mommy some more of that shelf stable milk so she could make more of that cheater mac and cheese. We really do ‘purreciate her. Mommy made a big ole plate last night.

Casr of Organic shelf stable milk

Yep, and then you jumped on the counter right next to that hot burner. Oh Me Cats were you in trouble!!!

Yeah sissy, I’s guess I’s shouldn’t have done that. Mommy was so scared she was cryin’. And I’s never seen mommy move that fast, have you? Did you see her come runnin’ fur me?

Who could miss it Raena. Her arms were flailin’ thru the air and she was hollerin’ “Danger!!! Danger!!! Don’t step on that burner!!!”.

She snatched me up so fast mine’s head was spinnin’. I’s purrobably won’t be doin’ that again. MOL

Dezi and Raena atop the Liberty Cat tree

Well Raena, me’s sure mommy will be happy to hear that. Ya’ know, there’s usually a reason fur the rules mommy makes. We might not always unnerstand, but mommy says they’re fur our own good and safety. You coulda got really hurt ifin you’d stepped on that hot burner. Me’s just glad mommy got to you befur anythin’ bad happened. Yet another blessin’ we’re fankful fur this week.

You’re right sissy. I’s a blest kitty fur sure. We’re so fankful fur all our furiends too. We live such blest lives.

 3 cats meowing thank you

We do Raena. And we’d like to remind everypawdy to take a minute today and every day to give fanks fur the blessings in your lives. Let’s link up with the Kitties Blue fur Sunday Selfies and go play. Maybe we can watch our pail of cat grass grow. MOL
