Chatting Cats: We Can See A Bright Light At the End of the Tunnel

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. Looks like I’s might get to lead every Wednesday. At least fur the summer. The lawn crew seems to have chosen this day to annoy us this year. And, does this sound furmiliar? We’re preppin’ fur yet another inspection this month. Befur ya’ get your knickers in a ruffle like mommy does, NO, it’s not legal to bother us this much. The law says management can pull those silly inspections, exterminations, etc., but they must not exceed 1 purr month. Everythin’ that they wanna look at and do, excludin’ maintenance requests, must be done at the same inspection. Do these peeps care what the law says? you know the answer to that one. Anyways, let’s get to the happy stuffs.

Raena looks up at Dezi while they sit on the Liberty cat tree

(Dezi meows loudly from the bedroom door) There’s happy stuffs to meow ‘bout Raena?

Oh yes, sissy. Yesfurday’s ‘pointment went purrfectly.

Dezi hides in bedroom and Raena heads down hall to her

(Dezi slinks halfway down the hall towards the living room and meows) Oh yeah, yesfurday’s news was happy news Raena. We’re so glad to furinally get some good news on the dental front fur mommy. (Dezi hears the leaf blower on the porch and runs back to the bedroom

I’s agree sissy. By now, most of you know that mommy’s been dealin’ with some really bad teeth issues fur quite a few years. Fanky fankfully, she started down the path to remedy those purroblems earlier this year. Anyways, yesfurday mommy trekked back to Ardmore to meet yet another dentist and get a quote to finish up and get the dentures she so badly needs. Let me tell ya’, it was some kind’a hot out yesfurday, but fanky fankfully, the a/c was workin’ and runnin’ full blast. We actually arrived fur mommy’s ‘pointment a few minutes early. That’s a big deal. Fur the last few years, mommy’s been late to almost everythin’. Mommy finds that a little annoyin’ as she was always the purrson to arrive at least 15 minutes early fur everythin’. But, she ain’t gettin’ any younger, so, I’s guess lateness is just one of those things that she’s gonna have to get used too.

Raena laying in stroller at dentist

Anyways, the office seemed quite comfy and relaxed, and the folks at the front desk were really furiendly. Mommy signed in and sat down to wait her turn. She didn’t have to wait fur long befur they was callin’ her to the back. They took some new x-rays and put her in a room and asked a few questions to purrpare her fur the doctor. After a few minutes alone watchin’ some silly movie on the small screen in front of her, a nice and very purretty lady walked in and innerduced herself as Doctor Amy. You know mine’s mommy, she’s always tellin’ peeps how nice they look and this was no exception. Mommy actually told her that she was too purretty to be a dentist. MOL They all had a good laff and Doctor Amy went in to look at mommy’s remainin’ teethies.

Profile of Dezi sitting on the floor and looking toward the door

Ya’ know Raena, me will never unnerstand why they always ask questions while they’ve got fingers and tools inside mommy’s mouth. Me doesn’t know how in the world they can unnerstand anythin’ mommy’s sayin’.

Me either sissy, me either. Nevertheless, mommy and doctor Amy had a back and furth mumble and came up with a plan. They’re gonna pull the rest of mommy’s teeth except the 2 canines on the bottom. Apparently, lower dentures can be quite a purroblem what with movin’ ‘round, becomin’ dislodged and even fallin’ out without some kind of anchor. Ya’ know, like that denture glue or somethin’. So, in mommy’s case, that anchor is gonna be those 2 canines. Technically, mommy will need what they call a partial on the bottom, and a full denture on the top.

(Not hearing the loud noises from the lawn crew anymore, Dezi heads back down the hallway towards the living room) Well, Raena, me’s glad they could figger out a way fur mommy to keep those things in place. Wouldn’t that be just to funny fur mommy to be talkin’ to someone and have her teethies fall out in her lap. MOL

Dezi and Raena playing on floor

That would be funny, sissy. But, I’s glad mommy won’t have that purroblem. Let me tell ya’ how it’s all gonna work. Mommy goes in next Monday to have impressions made so they can make her new teethies, called a plate or denture. She chose the cheap one that comes with a 6 month warranty and no frills. After havin’ those impressions made, mommy will make a ‘pointment to have all those top teethies removed. She has 4 more teethies in her sinuses, so looks like she’ll be takin’ more Sudafed and not blowin’ her nose again fur a while. The cost fur all this is $1,219.00.

Dezi sniffs tree ledge while Raena watches her

The day she has all those top teethies removed she’ll need to make another ‘pointment to have the bottom teethies removed. She’s gonna have to separate her ‘pointments cuz she doesn’t yet have enuff green papers to get it all done at the same time. Altho’ we do have our paws crossed, that by the time the dentures are made, we’ll have all the green papers and mommy can just do it all at the same time. The bottom cost is a bit higher than the top cuz they have to create teethies with a gap and wires to account fur those canine anchors they’re leavin’ in mommy’s mouth. The cost of the bottom is, $1,799.00.

Let me see ifin me can simplify these nummers Raena.

Cost of top teeth removal and full denture, including adjustments as mommy’s mouth heals and shrinks:

  • $1,219.00

Cost of bottom teeth removal and partial, including adjustments as mommy’s mouth heals and shrinks:

  • $1,799.00

This all comes to a total cost of:

  • $3,018.00

We’re gonna guestimate the cost of Sudafed and other medicines at ‘round:

  • $200.00

Mommy currently has: $1,800.00.

So we need a total of:

  • $1,418.00 by the end of July

Dezi and Raena and mommy A in a frame collage

We luv our mommy so very much. We want her to be the bestest

she can be, and the happiest she can be. So, we need your help,

cuz we can’t actually make any green papers.

That’s great sissy. Fanky fanks fur simplifyin’ it like that. We’re gonna open a new fundraiser with the new figgers. Here’s the linky fur the new fundraiser: Help Mommy A and of course, you can always donate directly to our paypal at: lexi.dezi@yahoo.com . That’s lexi (dot) dezi (at) yahoo (dot) com. Because of the credit card fees, you’ll see the fundraiser is set at $1,500.00 so we can cover those charges and still get the actual amount needed. Anythin’ extra will go towards our care.

Dezi and Raena lay atop the Liberty cat tree

We really ‘purreciate all your help and support and purrayers. Even ifin ya’ can’t donate, purrlease share. Ya’ never know who might be out there that could help mommy. And, ifin anypawdy knows where mommy can sell her gold crown, purrlease let us know. They’ll be pullin’ it out soon and mommy would luv to be able to put that money towards her care or ours.

 Raena lays on shower bench

You got that right sissy. We have the bestest furiends in the universe. I’s just know we’ll be able to get mommy to the other side of this soon. Now, the lawn crew’s gone, so let’s go play.

Service Cats: Surviving A Remodel Intact

Welcome to another Service Cat Monday. We so totally furgot that mommy had an early ‘pointment today. And, that today is Boxing Day here in the blogosphere. That bein’ said, we’re not gonna leave ya’ hangin’. Let me get the business outta the way so we can get on with it. As with all our Trainin’ posts, the followin’ will be written in human English fur translator and reader ease. Our Trainin’ posts aren’t meant to be a step by step manual, but rather, Tips, Tricks and Techniques mommy has used/developed throughout her many years of animal training, cats in purrticular. Ifin ya’ have any questions or trainin’ questions, purrlease leave them in the comments or send us an email. Purrlease be as specific as pawssible when askin’ behavioral questions. Ifin you have missed any posty in this series, you can ketch up by clickin’ the links at the bottom of this or any Service Cat Monday posty. And always ‘member, Training is all ‘bout Repetition and Rewards.

Dezi laying in cat tree in new harness

Well, the last several Service Cat Monday posts have been about dealing with the “Aggressive” Kitty. As we stated last week, that topic is almost unending, but we felt we had covered the issues that had been presented to us and were planning to move on this week. But alas, our sweet friend Valentine left a comment after last weeks post that requires an almost immediate response. The one thing we won’t do, is leave a topic when a kitty or it’s human are in danger or being hurt. And, the reason we’re addressing this here instead of an email is our belief that if one person’s asking, there are more wondering.

Dezi lays on piano bench after apartment flood

After our apartment flooded, we were all packed up and livin’ in

inches fur months befur the remodel was finished and we could get back to livin’.

Let me explain the situation and question as posed to us: A friend is having their house remodeled and one of the 3 indoor kitties is having a very hard time of it and has become “Aggressive”, going so far as to bite and scratch her human. Kitty has been shut in a back room to allow her to decompress, but it’s not really helping. There may also be an outside factor, as there is a family of strays living under the porch. Apparently, kitty has also attempted to escape to the great outdoors.

Lexi floats on carpet after flood with dryers blowing

Fearless sis Lexi cautiously floats on the carpet after the flood while

the noisy fan dryers were blowing.

Well now, sounds like there’s a few problems here, right? The first issue we have, is that we wouldn’t call this kitty’s behavior “Aggressive”. Nor, are we surprised this is happening. As we stated in our previous post, Cats Do Not Like Change or Loud Noises. Having lived through a flood, move, apartment remodel, new roof, new a/c, new hot water heater, and more stranger’s traipsin’ through me’s house than me cares to remember, me’s here to tell you that can really stress a cat out; even one as laid back as us Ragdolls. This is one of those situations, where more information is needed to determine the exact problem. But, we’re going to do our best to help with what we have. Based on the fact this is a remodel and the kitty in question wasn’t presenting this behavior beforehand, we feel pretty safe saying, the feral family under the porch probably isn’t a problem. However, it wouldn’t hurt to feed them a bit further away from the house. We also don’t know exactly where this person lives, but we do suggest providing shelter for the ferals’ away from the house as well. You know, gotta take care of our ferals.

Dezi sits in box with mouth open

Now let’s get to the heart of this problem, the Remodel. This noise is kind of like the carpet monster (vacuum cleaner), you can’t get rid of it until the job is done. That means, kitty is going to have to learn to live with it. Thankfully, it’s only temporary. Now me knows some of you just said to your selves, What? Your mommy wouldn’t do that to you?. Well folks, let me tell ya’, sometimes, life just isn’t perfect and everybody/kitty has to adjust. What we don’t know, that would really be helpful, is why and when is kitty biting, scratching and trying to escape. A scared kitty will often react with claws and teeth, and that’s what we suspect is happening here. The good thing is this can be fixed.

(While me’s at it, let me give you an example of a “specific”. The workers are in and out and my kitty is trying to run out the door. Or, the workers are hammering and making a lot of noise and my kitty went running crouched down and I grabbed her to put her in the decompression room and she scratched and bit me.)

 Dezi sits on a box

The Decompression room needs to be a kitty oasis until the remodel is over and the human needs to remain calm and positive when dealing with kitty. The room needs to have a litter box, food, water, cat bed, covered box or cat carrier (with the door open or better yet, off), a few favorite toys, and a well scented piece of clothing. And not the shirt you’re wearing during that fight with the contractor. (MOL) Leave a piece of clothing you were wearing during a time of no stress and happiness. Remember, cats are all about the smell. And trust me, we know happy smell and mad/upset smell. A small perch or cat tree placed near a window would also be good. Before the workers come in the morning, kitty should be taken to the Decompression room for a quick play session and a bite of breakfast. Maybe even a few of those extra special favorite treats you only buy at Christmas and birthdays. Now’s the time to buy them. It would also be good if you could put on some calm music or one of those white noise machines. Or, if you have kitties like us that like to watch teevee, turn on the boob tube (television).

Raena plays in a chewy box

As long as all the cats are getting along, all 3 should be in the Decompression room together. Believe it or not, their presence will help “Scared” kitty to be more relaxed and secure. Make sure there are several hide outs (covered boxes or carriers) available, so all kitties can hide if they need too. If this room is a bedroom, leave the closet door open. Mommy says to please remove any expensive or treasured clothes or quilts. Can you believe we’re not allowed in the closet at all? Anyways, this would be the exception to that rule. And as silly as it sounds, think positively. Yeah, we said it, think happy thoughts. See all of this as a good thing. Tell kitty how wonderful everything’s going to be when all this is over. And each day when the workers leave, let kitty explore and get used to her new territory. Remember, it’s kitty’s newly remodeled home, you just pay the bills. MOL

Raena laying in a chewy box

As for the “trying to escape”, we really don’t have enough information to even guess at a solution. We seriously doubt it has anything to do with the ferals’ under the porch and more likely trying to escape the noise and strangers in her home. But again, we just can’t be sure. It would be irresponsible for us to give a specific answer about that.

We hope we’ve helped a little, and we’re sorry we can’t offer more. The friend is welcome to contact us directly, and we’ll do all we can to help her and kitty. A happy peaceful home is our desire for every kitty in the world. As always, we welcome your questions, comments and post suggestions. And, ifin you’ve missed any of the posts in this series, you can ketch up by clickin’ the links below. As me said earlier, mommy has a ‘pointment today and one tomorrow, so we’ll be ‘round to visit as soon as we can. In the meantime, have a great Boxing Day. Hope you enjoyed our boxing day fotos and a little blast from the flooded past. (See, we can laff ’bout it now).

Blest Sunday: Happy Father’s Day Uncles Pawsum

(Dezi runs and jumps in mommy’s lap, excitedly, she meows at Raena) RaenaBelle, hurry!!! It’s time fur our Blest Sunday posty. and, guess what?

Raena lays on back of chair

(Raena jumps on the back of mommy’s sitting chair and meows back at Dezi) What is it sissy? What’s got you so excited today?

 Dezi lap selfie

Today is Father’s day, Raena.

What’s so excitin’ ‘bout that sissy? We don’t have a father. I’s mean, we have kitty fathers some where, but we never met ‘em. Fanky fankfully we have a pawsum mommy and I’s don’t wanna meet those daddys’ of ours.

Dezi and Raena in a golden frame for Father's day

Oh me cats Raena!!! You’re bein’ so literal today. Me wouldn’t wanna meet me’s kitty daddy either, but, cuz mommy is all we have, we celebrate her today too. she has to be both mommy and daddy to us. Ya’ know, we have lots of furiends who only have a mommy or a daddy, and they get celebrated on both their days cuz they’re doin’ twice the job. But, we also celebrate all our amazin’ uncles today. They might not be our daddies, but they luv us, suppurt us and are here fur us when we need ‘em.

Oh MeOW sissy, you mean we can celebrate our uncles today? We have really been blest with the bestest uncles in the universe. I’s know there’s lots of times when they’ve given mommy advice on things, and she really purreciates havin’ their input.

Dezi and Raena in an ocean view frame for Father's day

You’ve got that right Raena. We know a couple of our uncles are goin’ thru some trials right now, and we’ve been askin’ God to innervene and send them blessings and healin’.

You mean extra purrayers, don’t ya’ sissy? Cuz ya’ know, we purray fur all our furiends, awnties and uncles every day.

Of course Raena, me surely meant extra purrayers. We so wish all our furiends, awnties and uncles never had to be sick or go thru anythin’, but mommy says that’s not the way life works. But, we all know purrayer can change things fur the better. Ya’ know, we never get tired of tellin’ everypawdy how much we luv ‘em and how blest our lives are with them in it. Sometimes mommy ‘members back to the time befur we had our catputer and she can’t ‘magine goin’ back to that life.

Yep sissy, mommy says our lives have been so much fuller since we’ve met all our wonderful furiends. I’s can tell ya’ that this little kitty girly had no idea how blest mine’s life was gonna be the day mommy brought me home.

Dezi and Raena on the back pocket of jeans for Father's day

Me neither Raena, me neither. Fank you all fur bein’ the pawsum furiends, awnties and uncles that you are. As always, we wanna remind you all to take a minute today and every day to give thanks fur the blessings in your lives. And we fur sure wanna say a very meowsy big Happy Father’s Day to all our amazin’ uncles. Ya’ll are the bestest!!!

 Cat blows kisses emoji

I’s wanna say Happy Father’s day too. Let’s link up with the Kitties Blue fur Sunday Selfies sissy. I’s’ll race ya’ to the top of the cat tree. Ready, (Raena crouches on the back of the sitting chair) Set, (Raena leaps from the back of the sitting chair and starts to run. She meows to Dezi over her shoulder) GO!!!

Chatting Cats: Ding Ding Goes the Bell

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. Can you believe it? The weekend’s here already!!! WooHoo  The sun is shinin’, the birds are singin’ and…

Dezi looks up at Raena atop the Liberty cat tree

What are you meowin’ on ‘bout Raena?

Raena looks at mommy from stroller

Summer time sissy, summer time has furinally arrived!!! Sorry Trout Towne Tabbies, we do like the birdies. Ya’ know, I’s been givin’ that a lot of thought lately, and I’s think maybe it’s cuz of where we live. Ya’ know, our likin’ birds more than we do fishies?. We live in an area surrounded by land. Sure, mommy says Oklahoma has purrlenty of ponds, lakes and rivers, but none of ‘em are all that close to us. Y, Even when we went to the Petco last week, we didn’t see any fishies. Mommy said there was s’posed to be fishies in all those glass boxes we saw, but alas, they were all dark and not a fishy in sight. Hey sissy, did you read the comments the other day ‘bout your extra claws?

 Dezi's extra claw on ankle

Ifin ya’ look real close, you can see that claw would grow right

into the center of that big fleshy paw pad.

Me did Raena. Seems several peeps didn’t quite unnerstand what me was meowin’ ‘bout and said me’s special toe was a dew claw, and that all kitties have ‘em. Mommy said we should try to ‘splain it a bit better. The V-E-T said it fur sure wasn’t a dew claw, but instead just an abnormality of me’s front paw and leg. Mommy says it’s just somethin’ that makes me even more special. Me isn’t a pawlydactal, and this toe is totally useless. It serves no function other than to make me special and give me somethin’ else to have to groom. We know the foto is purretty bad, but hey, when ya’ have as much fur as me does, it can offen get in the way of gettin’ clear fotos. So, let me try to ‘splain it a bit better. Me has the normal paw like every other kitty, complete with fleshy soft paw pads. But, ifin ya’ follow the center of me’s paw pad up the middle of me’s leg a ways, ‘bout where an ankle would be, me has another really small pad with a tiny claw purrtrusion. Fankfully the claw doesn’t really grow like me’s other ones, or it would grow right into me’s large fleshy paw pad. Ifin that was to happen, me would have to have it surgically removed. Ya’ know, it’s really ‘purrtant to keep your kitties claws trimmed. Y, Ifin those things were to grow into our paw pads we could end up in a lot of pain and even lame.

Dezi and Raena lay atop the Liberty cat tree

You’re so right sissy. But ya’ know, not every kitty likes havin’ their claws trimmed.

Dezi lays in the Liberty cat tree house

You got that right Raena. Mommy’s always sayin’ she doesn’t unnerstand why we’re such tigers ‘bout claw clippin’. She’s the only one who’s ever clipped our claws and she’s never once clipped too far or hurt us. We had even planned to post a claw clippin’ how to video at one point. But, claw trimmin’ time ‘round here is like a heavy weight boxin’ ‘bout.

Dezi and Raena lay atop the Liberty Cat tree

Round 1: Mommy pawsitions kitty in lap while cooin’ ‘bout how bootyful we are. She grabs the clippers and a paw and starts feelin’ ‘round the paw fur a toe. Kitty squirms and pulls paw free. (Ding, Ding goes the bell).

Round 2: Unphased, mommy grabs paw again and feels ‘round fur a toe. She finds a toe and pushes the claw furward while tryin’ to move fur out of the way with semi-furee finger. Kitty squirms and gets paw furee. (Ding Ding goes the bell)

Round 3: Mommy enters trance like state, she’s all business now. She grabs kitty’s paw, finds toe and extends claw while cooin’ ‘bout how much more bootyful we’re gonna be when our claws are trimmed. With semi-furee finger, she tries to push away extra fur and moves the clippers to the claw fur the clip. Kitty pulls claw back just as the clippers shut. (Ding, Ding goes the bell)

Round 4: Mommy grabs paw while ‘splainin’ how we can’t do that or she’ll accidentally hurt us and clip too much. Kitty hisses and squirms till almost furee. (Ding, Ding goes the bell)

So far, kitty 4, mommy 0

Dezi looks out door from atop the Liberty cat tree while Raena sleeps on the ledge below her

Round 5: Mommy lays down clippers and re-pawsitions kitty on lap. Kitty growls their dispurrleasure and tries to bite mommy’s hand. (Ding, Ding goes the bell)

Round 6: Mommy holds kitty furmly so kitty can’t wiggle furee yet again. Trance like state deepens and mommy grabs paw, finds toe, pushes claw furward while usin’ semi-furee finger to move away fur and clips. Awwwwww Sweet success. 1 down and, how many more to go? Mommy sighs. Kitty continues to squirm and pull at paw, but the trance is workin’. Mommy continues to coo ‘bout kitty’s beauty while feelin’ fur yet another toe. Kitty hisses and bites mommy’s hand fureein’ kitty’s paw. (Ding, Ding goes the bell)

Round 7: Mommy places her chin over kitty’s head in an attempt to keep kitty from bitin’ yet again. She grabs paw, finds toe, pushes claw furward, with semi-furee finger pushes away excess fur as kitty squirms, hisses and growls. CLIP!!! Success…oops, mommy missed the claw. (Ding, Ding goes the bell)

Round 8: Still holdin’ paw with claw extended, mommy clips again. Success. Kitty can feel mommy’s heart beatin’ faster with the joy of 2 claws down. Kitty’s tail swooshes viciously while kitty maintains a low steady growl and continues to try to pull paw furee. Mommy gets a mouth full of fur and releases paw to retrieve excess fur from her mouth. (Ding, Ding goes the bell)

Round 9: Mommy babbles on ‘bout how there’s just a few more to go while grabbin’ kitty’s paw again. Kitty growls, kitty hisses and tries to bite mommy’s hand while she remains stoic and finds another toe. Pushin’ claw furward, movin’ excess fur, mommy goes in fur the clip. Kitty furees head from under mommy’s chin and puts head in line of sight to said claw. (Ding, Ding goes the bell

Round 10: Mommy starts singin’ the claw trimmin’ song while grabbin’ paw, findin’ toe, pushin’ claw furward, movin’ excess fur with semi-furee finger and clippin claw. Kitty gets that mommy means business at this point, and reluctantly settles in with a low steady growl. Kitty must continue to occasionally try to bite mommy’s hand, just so mommy doesn’t furget that kitty is not purrleased.

Dezi lays in house of Liberty cat tree

Once claw clippin’ is furinally over, a hunnerd and 87 minutes later, and mommy releases kitty, kitty runs to scratcher to sharpen newly blunted claws. Once kitty is certain claws are still there, kitty returns to mommy fur a little luvvin’. Mommy luvs on kitty while ‘splainin’ that ifin we’d only sit still, it could all be over in less than a minute. Kitty doesn’t care and continues purrin’ loudly while bein’ petted and hugged.

Raena sleeps belly up and all sprawled out

I’s need a short nap after all dat talk of claw trimmin’.

And that, dear furiends is why we’ve never posted a claw trimmin’ how to video. MOL I’s do the exact same thing, and have since day 1.  Mommy only has 2 hands and 10 fingers, not nearly enuff to do the deed and manage a camera.

 Pet Parade Blog Hop Badge

Let’s link up with the Pet Parade Raena, and finish our brekky. Me has a feelin’ there might be some claw trimmin’ in store fur us this weekend. We’ve gotta keep up our strength ifin we have any chance of goin’ 10 rounds or more with mommy.

Okay sissy. And, did you know this is the 200th celebration of the Pet Parade? One Pet Parade a week, that’s almost 4 years of linkin’ up. A meowsy big Concats to the hosts, co-hosts and all those who link up every week.
