Blest Sunday: Slip Sliding Away

MeOW  Leave me alone Raena. Me doesn’t feel good.

I’s just wanna help sissy. Do ya’ want me to write our Blest Sunday posty?

No Raena, Blest Sunday is me’s day. Me doubts you really wanna help. Me thinks you’re just nosy and wanna be in the middle of everythin’, all the time. Ifin you’re not the center of attention, you get all jealous.

Raena sits on cat mat while Dezi sits in front licking lips

That’s not true sissy. I’s luvs you. I’s just don’t unnerstand why you got so mad when mommy saw you peein’ on the floor and raced ya’ to the pawtty box room to the litter box. Why would ya’ wanna pee in the floor anyways?

It’s not like me really wants too Raena, but that nasty old pawtty box made me’s wee hurt.

Raena lays on cat mat while watching Dezi play with Yeowww nip nanner

Mommy says the pawtty box didn’t do it, sissy. She says it’s cuz you’re not drinkin’ enuff water. That’s why our meals have had extra au jus (juice/gravy) lately.

Me still thinks it’s the pawtty box’s fault Raena.

Well sissy, least mommy had some medicine left over from your sis Lexi. She said it was gonna make you feel all better. Well that and purrayers. What did the medicine taste like? Mommy wouldn’t give me any.

Trust me Raena, you don’t want any. It tastes yucky.

Really? Ifin it tasted so yucky why didn’t you fight with mommy ‘bout it?

Raena lays on cat mat while Dezi plays with nip nanner

Hmmmpht Haven’t you figgered out by now that mommy always wins? It’s just easier to take the medicine the furst time than to have mommy hold ya’ down and force it down your throat.

Yeah, I’s guess that’s true, sissy. At least we can have fun slidin’ ‘round on all the piddle pads mommy put down.

Me doesn’t think mommy’s too impurressed with your slidin’ games Raena. She nearly tripped over the bunched up pads in the pawtty box doorway last night.

Purrlease sissy, mommy luvs watchin’ us playin’ and havin’ fun.

 Dezi digs in toy box

Normally she does Raena, but me’s not so sure ‘bout all your slidin’. Me’s purretty sure “RaenaBelle, stop that” doesn’t mean she’s happy with what you’re doin’.

‘Course it does, sissy. Mommy says that all the time. Wait, where are ya’ goin’?

Dezi beside the toy box

Me has to go pawtty. And me’s sure mommy would get mad ifin me went on the carpet.

Ya’ better use the pawtty box sissy. I’s will ask all our furiends ifin they could spare a purrayer fur ya’. We are so Blest to have so many peeps that luvs us. Unfurnately, it’s stormin’ and cold here again, but I’s sure mommy will take you fur a stroll in our new stroller the next time mr. Sunshine comes back. That’ll fur sure make ya’ feel better. Right sissy? Sissy? Uh Oh, I’s see mommy comin’ down the hall with that syringe full of medicine.

Dezi looks out front of the new stroller while outside

Ain’t no point in runnin’ and tryin’ to hide Raena. Mommy knows all the hidin’ spots. Me fur sure ‘purreciates any purrayers me can get. Sick or not, stormy or not, we are so very Blest to have so much luv. And even tho’ me knows mommy doesn’t like it when me doesn’t use the pawtty box like me should, mommy still luvs me. We’re so Blest to have had some medicine in the house and a mommy who knows what to do. And, we’re so Blest to have our new stroller. We are indeed very Blest kitties. We’d like to remind everypawdy to take a minute today and every day to give Thanks fur the Blessings in your life. As long as you have luv in your life, you are Blest.

Service Cats: How Long Does It Take To Train A Cat Pt. 3

MeOW and welcome to Service Cats and Everything Feline on Furidays. We’re really enjoying this stroll down memory lane while explaining the length of time it took for each of us to learn specific tasks; and we hope you are too. Several of you expressed that you didn’t realize Training took so long after hearing about sis Lexi’s experience with the wheelchair. We never said Training was a snap, just that every cat can be Trained. That being said, kitty will learn more quickly any task that is in effect when they join a household. Me will explain that in more detail in a minute. Furst, we want to remind you to keep the questions and suggested topics comin’. You can post them in the comments section below or send us a private email via our Contact page. Ifin you’ve missed any of the posts in this series or just want to brush up on a purrticular subject, you can do so by visitin’ our Training Tips and Everything Feline page. Let’s get the business outta the way and pick up where we left off.

The followin’ post will be written in human English fur reader and translator ease. Our Service Cat posts aren’t intended to be an all inclusive Trainin’ Manual but rather Tips, Tricks and Techniques used/developed by mommy A thru her many years of animal trainin’, cats in purrticular. And to offur insight into your questions about Everything Feline. Always remember, Training is all ‘bout Repetition and Rewards.

If you missed Part 1 and Part 2 you can check them out here and here. So we left off with me trying to be just like sis Lexi and help her help mommy while she was in the shower. Me was far too small to even get on the side of the tub, much less be any help; but me watched sis Lexi intently every day. When me was finally big enough to actually get in the tub, me pretty much knew what to do. Watching another cat perform a task can be a great Training Tool. Kittens learn to use a litter box, hunt, and more all by watching their mother. So, watching a Task being performed by another helps to Train the new cat. Thus, kitty will be able to learn quicker, because they won’t know any different. Me was about 4 months old when me was finally able to jump in the tub. Mommy had bathed me pretty regularly due to me’s sickly, wormy condition that left me’s bloomers quite a mess; so me wasn’t afraid of water at all. And of course, me had watched sis Lexi get in the shower for months, so me thought every kitty loved playing in the water. At 4 months old, me took me’s place beside sis Lexi to help keep mommy’s face out of the water flow when she passed out in the shower. Me was still too small to make a difference, but me was mimicking her actions and was finally able to be of help a few months later.

Dezi about 6 months old

However, the shower wasn’t actually the first task me performed. Me actually chose mommy instead of her choosing me; so me bonded with her right away. If you haven’t read about how mommy found and saved me, you can read about it here. Anyways, me was a teeny little thing back then. Me didn’t even reach mommy’s ankles when standing on all fours. A couple of days after mommy brought me home, she was standing in the kitchen washing dishes. Something she did a couple of times a day after feeding sis Lexi and me. Me suddenly started to mew me’s squeaky mew,  turn around and around and paw at mommy’s ankles with me’s front paws. Mommy didn’t have a clue what me was doing, so she just started telling me how cute me was and that she loved me. Me was persistent tho’, and continued me’s “dance” and squeaky mewing. Mommy finally picked me up thinking me wanted to be held and loved on. Me will never say no to loving, but me continued to mew and started patting/pawing at her face. After a few more minutes mommy started “seeing stars”, and put me down. She usually gets about a 30 second warning from her body that she’s going to pass out. After setting me down, mommy tried desperately to get to her chair to sit, but she didn’t make it. Yep, she passed out right there on the floor. If she’d only listened to me.  But she hadn’t. She had no clue that me was trying to warn her.

These “Dancing Episodes”, as we call them, continued fur days until the light bulb finally went off in mommy’s head. While standing in the kitchen a few days later, mommy looked down at me dancing around and said, “Are you trying to tell me something sweety?” Nah, Duh. Me didn’t actually meow that, but that’s exactly what me was trying to do. Mommy gently picked me up and went straight to her chair to sit down. Sure enough, about 15 minutes later mommy got that “seeing stars” feeling and realized that me could sense and smell the change in her body chemistry. Me no longer dances around, but me still alerts mommy about 20 minutes before she passes out. That’s usually plenty of time for her to get to safety instead of ending up face down on the floor. All animals can sense/smell these subtle changes in the body chemistry, it’s just a matter of Training them to alert when they do. Or, in me’s case, listening when we’re acting strangely shortly before an incident happens. Especially if the actions are repeated several different times. We know many of you have heard stories about animals saving their owners from house fires, heart attacks, strokes and many other issues because our (cats) sense of smell is 14 times better than that of a human. Alerting mommy to these incidents has saved her many a bruise and embarrassing situation.

Dezi lays in wheelchairMe luvs the wheelchair

As for the wheelchair, well, me was never afraid of it. You see, unlike sis Lexi, me had never known mommy without one. So, mommy was able to start Training me immediately. Me’s Training started with just riding in mommy’s lap and getting used to moving around the house in the chair. Between 4 and 6 months, mommy started introducing me to the joystick and the power controls. Me had to be big enough to reach them. Again, me had been watching sis Lexi every day for all those months, so me thought this was something all kitties did as well. Once Training officially started, me took me’s maiden drive (mommy supporting me while me pushed the joystick on me’s own) within 2 months.

Dezi with telephone making a call for pizzaMe doesn’t really call the pizza place. MOL

Another Task we perform that people find interesting, is our ability to call for help with the phone. There’s no tricks or magic here, just an old fashioned land line. Mommy begins telephone Training almost immediately. Even tho’ kitty/me may not be big enough to actually push the buttons, we can get used to the repetition of numbers and what happens when the phone is activated and a call placed. Believe it or not, it’s kind of strange to us kitties to hear a voice we can’t actually see. An old fashioned answering machine is also helpful in getting kitty used to voices coming from the phone. By the time me was big enough to push the buttons down or carry the phone in me’s mouth, me was hooked. Me loves the telephone. Maybe a bit too much, according to mommy. Every time it rang, me would rush to answer it, even when mommy was holding it. More than once, me answered the phone while mommy was…indisposed (in the bathroom). Mommy says it wouldn’t have been so bad if me had just brought her the phone. But no, me wanted to push the buttons that accepted the call before bringing it to mommy. She’s always saying, there’s no phone in the bathroom for a reason. Me can’t imagine why that is tho’?. So, me had a little extra Training on only using the phone in emergencies or when mommy asks for it. Me does still occasionally get a little excited about the phone, but me hasn’t answered it while mommy was indisposed in years.

Raena Alerting to Syncope incident

As most of you know, Raena joined our family after sis Lexi went to heaven. She’s a smart one that Raena, and took to Training from day one. She’s been a master masseuse from the minute mommy let her out of the carrier here. Me had won a couple of automated toys to give to her as a welcome present; and she learned how to turn them off and on by herself almost immediately. She’s also built differently than me in that she’s longer and taller. So, mommy began her wheelchair Training a couple of weeks after she came here to live. Because our old wheelchair broke, her Training got derailed a bit, but she’s picking up the new chair like it’s been here forever. Mommy says she’s doing better than both of us. Raena has a very curious and open disposition, so she’s always done well in public. And, like me, she bonded with mommy right away and began alerting to mommy’s syncope incidents after only a few days.

Well there you have it. This 3 part series has been an overview of the time it took to Train a few different kitties to perform a few of our basic Tasks. If there’s a specific kitty or Task you’d like us to expound on, let us know. Otherwise, we’ll start a new topic next week. Remember, all kitties/anipals can be Trained and even do better with some Training. And, Training is all about Repetition and Rewards. Don’t forget to leave your questions, blog topics and any comments in the comment section below or send us an email. And ketch up on any post you may have missed by clicking the links on our Training Tips and Everything Feline page. We’re doing something new this week and joining Comedy Plus for Feline Fridays.

Chatting Cats: Cold Strolling: Where Are You Spring

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. MeOW What a day.

Dezi atop the cat tree looking down

What are you meowin’ on ‘bout over there Raena?

All the commotion here yesfurday, sissy. Was that not a headache or what? There was men all over the place with big bags and tools and all kinds of things. You’d have thought it was spring time or somethin’.

Yeah, well it’s not. Your short stroll with mommy to the mail box should’a told ya’ that.

Raena looks out the new stroller while outside

Yeah, it sure was cold sissy. Even tho’ the sun was beamin’ in the sky, it was chilly and really windy. None the less, I’s sure did enjoy mine’s stroll with mommy. Even ifin she was tryin’ to hurry and get us back inside.

Dezi lays atop the cat tree looking out

Yep Raena, me thinks everypawdy fur miles ‘round heard how much you enjoyed the stroll. Poor mommy was tryin’ to use the…well, she was in the pawtty box room and there you were runnin’ back and furth to the stroller and meowin’ at the top of your lungs.

Raena looks out the back screen on the new stroller while outside

I’s couldn’t help it sissy. It was so much fun that I’s wanted to go back out again. Mommy could’a put on her coat and mine’s harness and taken me back out. Ya’ know, we usually wear our harnesses to go out. But, since we were only goin’ to the mailbox and mommy knows we’re comfutable in the stroller, she let me go out without it just this once. ‘Course, she also kept me all zipped up, so I’s couldn’t escape. It’s just been so long since we went fur a stroll, that I’s furgot how much fun it was. So many noises. I’s kept hearin’ some birdy, but I’s couldn’t figger out where it was comin’ from. And I’s saw some big o’l deer out in the woods. What fun I’s had.

Well Raena, you’ll get purrlenty of time fur fun today when you and mommy go back to the dentist fur another one of those teethy fittings. Hopefully this will be the last one. At least fur the upper ones. She’s still gotta have those last two teethies removed and then this whole thing will start all over with more wax fittings fur the bottom teethies.

Raena stands up in stroller to look around while outside

Yeah sissy, fanky fankfully we’ve almost got all the green papers mommy needs to get this finished. And then she’ll be lodgin’ some massive complaints. She’s seen how bad their work can be, so she’s a little ‘fraid to make any of those complaints right now. I’s need to finish mine’s brekky so I’s can get ready to go with mommy. Are you comin’ sissy?

Yep Raena, me’s right behind ya’. Hopefully, we’ll get ‘round to visit with our furiends tomorrow.

Chatting Cats: We’ve Got A New Ride

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. We’ve got a cool new ride!!!

 Gen7 Jogger Pet stroller assembled

Raena, what are you doin’? You know we try to save our blessings fur our Blest Sunday postys.

Raena checks out the new Gen7 Jogger stroller

I’s too x’cited, sissy. You can save what you wanna meow ‘bout it till Sunday ifin ya’ want. But, I’s meowin’ ‘bout it today. I’s been ridin’ in that cramped old carrier fur too long. We’ve had a few sunny days that were great fur strollin’, but here we sat hangin’ in the house ‘stead of out enjoyin’ the furesh air and huntin’ fur bunnies.

Dezi checks out stroller while RAena stands on side looking up

          And whose fault is that?

 Raena in stroller

It’s not all mine’s fault sissy. Besides, it’s not like it was in purristine condition when I’s was born. Mommy said you and your sis Lexi had already broken the board that went across the bottom cuz ya’ll were too heavy fur it. And like ya’ll, I’s never would’a broke the stroller on purrpuss; I’s luvs goin’ fur strolls with mommy too much.

 Dezi looking out from stroller

Well at least we could still use it when sis Lexi and me snapped the bottom board. When you broke it, there was no more strollin’ fur any kitty. Me sure did miss it. When me was little and used to go with mommy, me always had to ride in that cramped carrier. You got lucky and came here long after we were already enjoyin’ the fureedom the stroller gives us. So the way me sees it, is that you were just payin’ your dues like all the Service kitties befur you. Anyways, me’s glad we got a new ride too. And this one shouldn’t break. Me heard mommy say it could hold up to 75 pounds. That means both of us can ride at the same time.

Raena jumps into stroller from floor

Uh, Mommy?! It’s really big, but I’s can still jump in on mine’s own.

And we could even gain a few pounds. MOL That Gen7 Pets makes a mighty fine stroller. It’s so comfy. And did you see that our tires are bigger than the ones on mommy’s wheelchair? I’s bet there ain’t nowhere we can’t go now. Ya’ know, Oklahoma has a lot of really bad roads and sidewalks. And we’ve got lots of dirt and holes too. That kind’a terrain can be hard on wheels and tires. Mommy says the wheels on our new stroller were meant fur that stuff. It is called a jogger after all.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Yeah Raena, and me can’t wait to go fur our furst stroll. We were s’posed to go yesfurday, but it took mommy a little longer to put it together than she x’spected; and we got a late surpurrise notice ‘bout a inspection fur today. That meant mommy had to try to do a little cleanin’ last night. Needless to say, she didn’t get much done, we should’a went fur that stroll instead.

Raena looks down over the edge of the new stroller

That sure is a long way down.

I’s agree, sissy. Ya’ know, a lot of our furiends are gettin’ strollers of their own. Wouldn’t it be cool ifin we could all for fur a stroll together? We get asked a lot ‘bout whether or not we would recommend peeps gettin’ their kitties a stroller. And we totally think they’re a great way fur kitty to spend some time in the great outdoors while still bein’ safe. And, takin’ kitty fur a stroll even lets our peeps get a little exercise. We do recommend doin’ your homework befur buyin’ one tho’. Ya’ wanna make sure it’ll hold kitty and be sturdy enuff fur kitty to feel safe. We much purrfur the 3 wheeled strollers to those rickety 4 wheelers. Not only do they look sleeker, they maneuver better. As fur whether or not to get one with a zipper closure or velcro, we can only meow ‘bout what we know. We’ve only had zipper ones, and we really do recommend the Gen7 strollers. Our old stroller had gaps t’ween where the zipper ended and met the suppurrt bars. And anypawdy who knows kitties knows, ifin kitty can fit their head thru a space, they’ll squeeze their whole body thru somehow.

Dezi sniffs new Gen7 Jogger stroller

That’s so true Raena. More than once we’ve poked our head and front paws out the gaps on that stroller. Me has a feelin’ that’s not gonna be pawssible anymore. Me didn’t see any gaps in our new stroller. But just in case, it’s always good to tether kitty into the stroller with the purrvided D rings. Even the calmest of kitties can get spooked. Strollin’ should be fun. We also recommend keepin’ the stroller closed, least till kitty gets comfy enuff not to try to jump out. As fur the assembly required, ifin mommy can do it, anypawdy can. Usually it’s just a matter of attachin’ the wheels. You’ve just got to make sure everythin’ gets locked into place. ya’ don’t want a wheel fallin’ off on your furst stroll. And altho’ we luv that our stroller matches our eyes, color choice shouldn’t dictate the stroller you choose. Quality strollers usually only come in a few purrimary colors, like red, blue and black. That means there’s no purrple strollers fur us. You can get creative and trick yours out any way ya’ want.

Raena checks out new Gen7 Jogger stroller

Are we gonna do that with ours sissy? I’s not sure what that means ‘zactly, but I’s like the sound of it.

Dezi checks out the new Gen7 Jogger stroller gift from Cindy

Mommy says we can Raena. Just ‘member, it’s gotta be tasteful. We are Southern Belles after all.

Tasteful huh? Are we gonna put treats all over it?

(Dezi shakes her head.) We’ll meow ‘bout it later Raena. Let’s just say a meowsy big Fank you to awnty Cindy and angel Maggie Meme fur our new ride and get ready to go fur a stroll.

 Animated thank you rose

I’s with ya’ sissy. Can we meow ‘bout what to call it too?

This is not a sponsored post. We received our new Gen7 Jogger from an amazing awnty and just thought we’d tell ya’ more ‘bout how to pick the right stroller fur your pets.
