You Gotta Go Where

WooHoo It’s finally Furiday!!! It’s still a little chilly but da sun was out when we got up this meownin’ and da temps are supposed to rise. Looks like summer may be here. You know what dat means? Me’s hopin’ fur lots of stroller rides with mommy.

Dezi standing on back legs waving with front paws

Course, me’s havin’ to share her right now.

Yep, we got a knock on da door yesfurday and mr. W’s home health nurse said he told her to come tell mommy to take care of Buddy. Mommy just luvs how he thinks he can order her around…NOT!!! But of course mommy won’t let Buddy go hungry, so she trodded off to mr. W’s ‘pawrtment to feed Buddy. Da place was a mess (messier than normal), so mommy called ‘round to da hospital when she got back home. Sure ‘nuff he was there. He said Buddy tripped him and he broke his hip and had to have pins put in it. He’s been hopin’ fur a new hip fur a few years now. He’s been purr-pussly fallin’ tryin’ to break dat thing to no avail.

Buddy in hallway in sit pose

Now we’s not bein’ mean here, mr. W told mommy dat himself when she caught him out on da ice a couple winters ago tryin’ to slip and fall. Ever few months he goes to da hospital cuz of a fall, but he’s never broken dat hip. Well this time he did. Da only thing is, we don’t like him blamin’ Buddy. Trust me, Buddy’s no leg winder. And he’s used to givin’ a wide berth cuz mr. W be large and clumsy and uses a wheelchair. Anyways, me’s getting’ off track here, mommy be takin’ care of Buddy right now, so dat’s gonna cut into me’s strolls a bit; and everythin’ else fur dat matter. She’s tellin’ me to hurry now in fact cuz she needs to go feed and play with Buddy.

The Nasty Hackys: Hairball Prevention

Meowllo everypawdy, today is National Hairball Awareness Day. Ifin you have a cat, you no doubt know when kitty has a hairball. Mommy says almost all kitty luvvers know da sound of a hairball comin’ up; we call it da nasty hackys. And of course we kitties are so careful to place them fur maximum effect. While you sleep we may place one in your slippers or da path you take furst thing in da meownin’ when you still have sleepy eyes. Where ever we put them, we’re telling you somethin’. We’re telling you dat we need some help cuz our furs are sheddin’ like mad. Mommy says watchin’ me hack up a hairball is pawful and she’s never seen anythin’ like it befur. She says me’s face says me is terrified and me convulses till da hairball comes up as a purrjectile and lands across da room. Let me tell ya’, me may not know what me’s face looks like, but me can tell ya’ dat is some scary stuffs. Me doesn’t like doin’ it not one bit. (don’t worry, we’re not showing fotos)

Dezi grooming on the cat tree

Most cat pawrents just accept hairballs as one of the unpleasant things dat goes along with luvvin’ and sharin’ your home with a cat. And truth is, most hairballs move through our system just fine and either become da nasty hackys or go out da other end. But in rare instances hairballs can cause a life threatening blockage. Ifin you notice kitty exhibiting any of da following symptoms, purrlease take kitty to da VET. Always better safe than sorry.

  • Ongoing vomiting, gagging, retching, or convulsing without purrducing anything

  • Lack of appetite

  • Lethargy

  • Constipation

  • Diarrhea

Thing is, me gets very few hairballs. And trust me, me’s very glad ‘bout dat. Sis Lexi used to get them almost daily, even when she was young and healthy. Mommy says in all da years she’s dealt with kitties, da short haired kitties seemed to have more hairballs than da long. Seems a little backwards, but it is what it is. So how can you humans help us with those nasty hairballs? Well Wellness purrvided us with this great infographic with some pawsum suggestions.

Brushing always helps get out some of da loose dead fur dat would otherwise end up in our tummies and eventually in a wet slimy pile somewhere inconvenient fur you. Now me knows dat not all kitties enjoy bein’ brushed. Me is just one of those kitties. Fank da cats me’s fur doesn’t mat or me would be in trouble. But there’s a product out there dat your grooming challenged kitty will like; you just have to keep trying. Me luvs da grooming glove especially well. Now it won’t get out mats, but ifin you’re using it regularly, mats shouldn’t form. There are many other grooming brushes, combs and helpers out there, so keep trying, you’ll eventually find kitty’s sweet spot. Mommy says she’s even gone so far as to use a moist paper towel or microfiber cloth. Again, those won’t take out mats, but ifin used regularly they should take enough of da dead furs out so dat hairballs don’t form. As cats, we naturally groom ourselves. Ifin you notice kitty seems a little OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) about it, try to discourage this behavior. Ifin neccessary, see your VET; kitty may have other health issues dat need to be addressed.

There are treats, and pastes, and foods to help with hairball control as well. Wellness has just one of those foods. They’ve been busy creating a new formula dat be good fur kitty and helps with those nasty hackys. It includes deboned chicken and turkey as well as vitamins and minerals to support skin and coat health. And a precise blend of natural fibers to help move those hairballs thru da digestive tract. This formula touts supporting whole body health and well being. At this time it appears to only come in kibble form. It’s available in 3 sizes and runs from about $12.00 to $34.00. As you know we don’t eat kibble here, but this could make a helpful treat.

Me has to go get some brushin’ and play in now. You know, gotta keep those hairballs at bay. Me’s joinin’ Rascal and Rocco fur da weekly Pet Parade.

Today would have been sis Lexi’s 17th birthday. It’s hittin’ mommy purretty hard. We’re also havin’ some storms, so we’ll be ’round to visit soon, but purrobably not today. But we would like fur you to ‘member sissy today and smile. She brought so much luv and happiness to mommy, me and so many of you, and she deserves to be remembered.

Happy Birthday to angel Lexi in a heavenly frame with wings

Dezi laying on cat tree and meowing

Oh Meowllo everypawdy, are you all happy dat it’s da weekend? Well me has a special treat fur you all today. Yep, me’s treat recipe posty was a big hit and so we’s gonna post another one fur ya’ today. Now ‘member these are treats straight from your kitchen and NOT nutritionally complete. We had one negative comment ‘bout how da last treat wasn’t species appropriate. To dat we replied, Not any worse than most of da pet food and treats on da market, and you don’t have to make it. So anyways let’s get on with our new recipe.

Sweet Dezi on cat tree

Now me wants to remind you dat you can use different proteins (meats) in most of these recipes. Mommy doesn’t like to feed us fish, so she often substitutes chicken, rabbit or duck fur da protein source. And these treats are edible by all da carnivores in your family. Another trick me furgot to tell you ‘bout last week is dat mommy often adds catnip to da recipe. Today we’re gonna take a little trip down under to Australia fur our recipe and we’re gonna make Kangaroo Hoppers. This recipe makes approximately 20 – 30 small balls.

Kangaroo Hoppers

1/2 pound shrimp, cleaned

1 Tbsp. Kelp powder or catnip

1/2 tsp vegetable or olive oil

1 Cup crushed Corn Flakes (optional)

Preheat oven to 350°

1. Clean and de-vein shrimp.

2. Boil until pink and cooked through

3. When cool, Puree shrimp and add Kelp powder/Catnip and oil

4. Roll into small balls and then roll through the Corn Flakes to coat (Corn Flakes add a little crunch)

5. Bake on lightly greased cookie sheet or parchment paper for 10 – 15 minutes.

6. Cool and Serve.

7. Store leftovers in airtight container in fridge

Alas, no kangaroo in da Kangaroo Hoppers, but they are good. Now some of you are saying…kelp powder? Yeah, kelp powder is actually full of minerals and Omega fatty acids. It’s also a source of protein. Now we all know there’s nothin’ nutritious bout da corn flakes, but they do help add a little crunch to da bite. Ifin ya’ try these, let us know how they went over in your house.

Dezi lays in the cat bed

Me’s joinin’ Rascal and Rocco fur da weekly Pet Parade Blog Hop as always. Mommy told me last night dat she had some secret plans dat might result in a surprise fur me, so we’ll be ‘round to visit ya shortly. And me guesses we’s all gonna have to wait to find out ’bout mommys’ secret plans.

Morsels For Kitty: Straight From Your Kitchen

Meowllo everypawdy it’s finally Furiday. Mommy and me have been tossin’ around an idea fur a while now and we decided to bring it to you all today. So purrlease let us know what you think and ifin you would like to see more of by commenting and sharin’.

Dezi cocks head to the side in thought

You know these days pet pawrents are concerned with what they’re feeding their furry furmily members. They wanna know things like what’s in it and where’s it made and is it nutritionally complete and so on. This movement has caused more and more pet pawrents to choose to make their furries food at home. But there are still lots of peeps dat can’t do dat or fur whatever reason don’t want to. We’s not makin’ any judgements here, dat’s not what this is about. We all want da bestest fur our family members whether they have fur or not. So we thought we’d bring you some easy peasy recipes you can make right in your own kitchen. You will have complete control over what goes in it and so you’ll know da treat you’re feedin’ is good fur “Fluffy”.

Dezi eating treats from mommy's hand

These are treats and therefur NOT nutritionally complete. They can also be used to administer some medications. Mommy used them more than once with sis Lexi. Keep in mind dat you can change da protein up. We are not big fish eaters at our house so mommy offen uses a can of chicken or some other protein. And just cuz da name sez “Mature Cats” doesn’t mean younger kitties can’t eat them.

Minnie’s Morsels for Mature Cats

1 can Sardines, packed in olive oil or water

1 Cup whole grain bread crumbs

1 Egg beaten

Preheat oven to 325°

  • Pour entire contents of Sardine can (or protein of choice) into a medium size bowl.
  • Using a fork, mash the Sardines into tiny pieces.
  • Add the remaining ingredients and mix well.
  • Drop 1/4 teaspoonfuls of mixture onto lightly greased cookie sheet
  • Bake for 7 minutes
  • Cool and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

So there it is. Easy peasy right? These treats are really good and easy to make. Can’t tell ya’ exactly how long they last cuz we eat ‘em up befur they go bad. We have lots of recipes and recipe books. At one time the only folks makin’ Fido and Fluffy’s meals were da elite, but today we can all be da elite. We do hope you’ll give this a try and let us know what you think. As me does every weekend, me’s joinin’ Rascal and Rocco fur da Pet Parade.
