Blood Stealin’…No Thieves Here

Meowllo evewypawdy, da weekend’s finally here! Woohoo Yous askin’ yousselff why me be so ‘cited it’s da weekend since meez a cat and meez mommy be disabled and home wiff us all da time anyways, wight? You wuld be wight ‘bout boff those fings, but it seems eeven tho’ mommy dusn’t work anymowe hers still kinda wuns like she duz. She twies to put in hers 12 hours on da puter evewyday workin’ on meez bloggy and visitin’ wiff ow furiends, and facebook and all da udder stuffs we do. And now hers puttin’ in extwa time wesearchin’ fings ‘bout sis Lexi’s CKD/CRF. So when da weekend comes, she usually spends mowe time wiff us and less on da puter. It keeps us behind in ow visitin’, but she sez all this wuz stawted fur us, and ifin she dusn’t spend time wiff us, then all this wuz fur naught. So dat’s why meez so happy ‘bout it bein’ da weekend. And meez hostin’ a dance at Cat Scouts tomowwo. Yeah me be a little nervous cuz meez never dun this afur, but meez still ‘cited cuz it’s gunna be so much fun. Ifin yous been finkin’ ‘bout joinin’ up, no time like da purresent. Just click on da link (cat scouts) above.

As you all know weez now 7 weeks into sis Lexi’s diagnosis of early stage Renal Failure. Hers diagnosis wuz made wiff a simple urinalysis and altho’ mommy asked fur bloodwork to be dun, ow Vet found dat unnecessary. Dat did bodder mommy a bit, but she wuz so shocked by da diagnosis she kuldn’t weally fink very clearly and let it go. She came home and dug in and stawted wesearchin’. Evewy where she looked, blood work seemed very purrtant. Has sumfin’ to do wiff da nummews and all. So when mommy took Lexi in fur hers 6 week check up, she again asked fur a blood work up. Da Vet completely ignored mommy and sed she wuz duin’ what she needed to be duin’ and dat sissy looked gweat. Now mommy wuz fwustwated. We like ow Vet and we get a small discount which weally helps, but mommy feels she weally needs mowe infurmation to manage sissy’s illness. Specially when we heard fwum ow sweet furiend Brian dat Zoe had beat this pawful fing based on hers nummews. So mommy set out to learn how to make Lexi da next one to beat this pawfull disease. Turns out dat wuz easier sed then dun.

Don’t know what’s up wiff da Vets wound here, but getting’ one to do a CBC/Sr. Blood Panel wuz hawder than we evew spected. Evewy time we turn wound one of ow furiends is havin’ their blood stolen, but dat’s not sumfin’ kitties wound here have to deal wiff pawently. But yesfurday we finally found a vet dat wuld do just dat. Now we need to find da munny to pay fur it afur ow pointment on Monday. Da cost is gunna be $132.00. Dat wuld include da office visit, Full CBC and a new urinalysis. We kuld get by wiff $100.00 and skip da urinalysis, but mommy wuld like to get furesh tests as ifin it wuz da furst time so she wuld have a complete picture of where sissy be at. Mommy found dat there awe noms out there dat sissy will eat dat not be outwageously purriced. They awen’t purrscwiption, but mommy hasn’t had any kitty dat wuld eat those purrscwiption diets. As weez sed afur, it be da phosphowous content dat needs to be low, not da purrotien. Altho’ da purrotien needs to be fwum a “good” source. Ifin you can help wiff da Vet cost we wuld sure purreciate it. Ow PayPal addwess be on da PayPal link on ow sidebaw.

We Won Da Kitty Lottery–PetBox

Meowllo evewypawdy, hope yous been enjoyin’ yous week. Weez had roofers all week and mommy has da mudder of all migwaines. We wusn’t too purrleased they wuz here eevew. So when finally came outta hidin’ to find ow supwise we felt like we had won da Kitty Lottery. We got ow very own PETBOX!!! Weez been seein’ these all ovew da blogosphere and weez entered numewous contests to win one. But so faw, weez not won any of them. We wuz a little sad and so mommy set ‘bout to make us glad. You know mommys, they don’t want us to be sad. Specially wiff all dat’s goin’ on wiff sissy and all. Anyways dat leads us to now. Weez kinda twyin’ out to be Petbox ambassadors. Dat means we wuld get ow very own Petbox evewy mumff. And OMC Wait’ll yous see what all we got. Well let me just tell ya’ ‘bout it and show ya’ evewyfin’.

 dw Petbox38

dw Petbox40

As me sed we had been hidin’ nappin’ and twyin’ to avoid all da noise da roofers wuz makin’ so we didn’t even hear da delivery man come. Well mommy knew zactly what it wuz when she got da package cuz it sed Get Petbox.com wight on da box. Knowin’ dat we wuz gunna be weally ‘cited, mommy quietly opened da box to take a foto or two afur we dug in. Then she put da box up on a shelf so we wuldn’t get into it afur her wuz weady wiff da camewa. Once fings quietted down we slowly emerged fwum ow hiding nappies. And boff ow noses went up in da air. Sis Lexi maneuvered da chair, anudder box, and climbed up sevewal levels of da cat twee to get to da “box”. She stawted rubbin’ da bottom and scentin’ it all up. Me didn’t know what it wuz, but da smell wuz overwhelmin’ and me wusn’t gunna let her hav it all, so me jumped up next to her. It wuz callin’ ow names. So mommy gwabbed da camewa and took da box down. We followed post haste. It wuz like dat box wuz pullin’ us to it. And oh da wunnew when we finally got to see inside. There wuz so many pawsumly amazin’ fings in there.

 dw Lexi with Petbox43

Da furst item we found wuz a Yeowww nip heart. These peeps must hav da mawket on da bestest nip ever, cuz they just don’t make a bad toy. Least in ow sperience. But dat wusn’t da only pawsum nip in da box. Also included wuz a whole big ole bag of Priscilla’s cat nip. Now let me just tell ya’ we won a cat gwass kit fwum her not too long ago, and OMC dat gwass wuz amazin’. All their purroducts be Home Grown. So you can magine how good dat nip is. And it’s so finely gwound it’s almost a powder. So da bag…it is cwam packed full. No skimpin’ or cheatin’ ya’ there. Yous fur sure get yous munny’s worff. But alas, dat’s not all dat wuz in dat lottery box.

Ifin yous can’t see da video, purrlease click here.

There wuz also a door hangin’ scwatcher fwum Petlinks. (We actually hav sum of their udder toys. They’s all purretty cool. Most of them hav a snap attachment dat can be innewchanged.) Altho’ no need to hang it on ow account. We liked it just like it wuz. And it even has a zipper openin’ so yous hoomans can add sum of dat Priscilla’s catnip to it. As ifin we needed mowe enticin’ to use it. NOT!!! MOL Mommy sez da scwatcher is quite nice and goes wiff any décor. Like we care, it felt good and smelled good and comes wiff a snap on toy. Ifin it ever gets unused enuff to get hung on a door, weez’ll let ya’ know. MOL But wait, there’s mowe. Da cutest little weebly wobbly nip egg wiff feathers comin’ out da top by Petlinks too. Weez been chasin’ dat wound da house fur days now. Awe you wantin’ yous very own PetBox yet? Well wait, cuz weez not fwu. There wuz also a sample size bag of Royal Canin Indoor Adult 27 dwy noms. It’s a nice size bag so you kuld purrawlly tell ifin yous kitty wuld like it afur you run out. And then there wuz a bag of Wellness Kittles Tuna and cranberry tweats. In udder words, top quality bwands here. No skimpin’ fur yous fur babies fwum PetBox. Only da bestest. Weez quite impurressed wiff da amount of goodies we weceived and da quality of those purroducts.

Ifin yous can’t see da video, purrlease click here.

Dat’s all well and good ya’ say, but what ‘bout da company? These days we all like to know dat da peeps we giv ow munny to be duin’ sumfin’ good fur da animal community. It’s not necessary , but we do like to see it. Well PetBox got it’s stawt in 2013 when Sean Conlin, Will Ford and a foo udder pet fanatics down in San Diego CA got togedder. In da furst year they sent out over 60,000 pet boxes and wuz supported by over 250 diffewent bwands. And they offer a wide vawiety of purroducts fur yous kitty, doggy, or piggy. Betcha’ yous kuld find sumfin’ fur udder pets too. And they offer sevewal diffewent purrice boxes, to meet most pocket books.

 dw D n L petbox48

So what do they do fur da community? Well when you buy yous very own PetBox you feed a shelter animal; sez so wight there on da box. And PetBox has a pawsum purrogwam called #PetBoxFridays. Any shelter or rescue can benefit fwum this purrogwam. See they pawtner wiff BOGO Bowl and send out 100 pounds of noms to one lucky shelter or rescue evewy week. You can help nominate and choose which shelter gets dat food too. Like and follow them on Facebook and evewy Furiday at 10:45 a.m., da post goes up fur you and all their followers to nominate and vote on hoo shuld weceive noms fur da nex week. They announce da winners on Mondays fwum da #PetBoxFridays votes. Is dat not pawsum? Mommy’s impurressed and weally likes dat they giv back. And as it be Furiday today, why don’t you mosey on ovew and paw dat like button and vote fur yous favowite wescue or shelter to win. Don’t furget to shawe so udders can vote too. They also hav a pawsum fundraiser dat any organization can benefit fwum. Ifin yous innewested, you might wanna check dat out here.

 dw scratcher nip zipper61

Now as we sed earlier, they hav a Pet Box in just ‘bout evewy purrice wange fwum $9.95 to $59.95 a mumff. And you can select da items yous selff or let it be a supwise and let them pick items fur ya’. And ifin you hav a kitty and a doggy or piggy or…you kuld even choose purroducts fur each all in da same PetBox. Yous weally wantin’ one now awen’t ya’? Well what awe ya’ waitin’ fur? Head on over and get all signed up. You can get 1 box, subscwibe too their auto ship purrogwam where you get 1 evewy mumff, or even send 1 or an auto ship as a gift. And you know what? Ifin you use da code DEZIZ10 you can even save 10% off yous order. Dat is so pawsum of da peeps to dat fur all ow furiends, isn’t it. Well we sure hope they like us enuff to make us ambassadors. We bet they weally wuld ifin yous membered to use ow code and order yous own PetBox. After all, you know yous wanna, and yous wuld be makin’ lots of anipals happy too. Member each box purrchased helps feed a shelter animal. Meez gotta tell ya’ you fur sure won’t be disappointed. And isn’t yous furry furmily member worff it?

Disclaimer: We didn’t get any gween papers fur this weview. We did however get high on nip and joy fwum da pawsum Pet Box they sent us fur furee. As always, anyfin’ we weview, we use or plan to use and fink you might wanna know ’bout it. Weez still duin’ da happy kitty dance wound here. Fanks so much fur takin’ a chance on us PetBox. Weez also wanna tell ya’ ‘bout sumfin’ pawsum meez furiend Crepes is duin’. It’s Furiday da 13ff, and they hav a pawsum new movie launchin’ today in support of black cats. Evacuate? Are You Ready? (human speak)

Meowllo evewypawdy, hope yous havin’ a gweat day. Weez gunna be writin’ a little educational posty today, but furst, we wanted to hold off till we knew whedder or not we wuz gunna be able to get sumfin’ dun ‘bout da tire and make it to Lexi’s pointment. So here’s where weez at, Weez not makin’ sissy’s pointment today as da caw still has no tire. We hav wescheduled hers pointment fur Fursday afternoon. Fanks to awnty Anonymous and awnty Karen we have ordered a new tire and it will be here tomowwo. Nopawdy wound here actually carries tires in their shops; they hav to order evewyfin’. But da tire has been ordered, so weez on ow way to getting’ fixed up. Mommy knew da tires on da caw awen’t very good and purrawlly needed weplacin’ sooner than later, so weez will have to figger sumfin’ out to do them one at a time as a new tire costs $99.99. Dat’s da cheapest quote we kuld get. It’s pawsible Walmart has them cheaper, but ifin you can’t get there it dusn’t matter ifin they be furee, yous can’t take advantage of their purrice. So we hope to not get in this boat again and weplace ‘em slowly so maybe we can get sumwhere cheaper nex time. Da manager’s alweady been down here wantin’ to know when da caw is gunna be fixed cuz we be in violation of ow lease.

Is dat da manager? Let me at 'er.
Is dat da manager? Let me at ‘er.

This is one of da many weasons mommy had hoped we kuld find a ride or went a caw to go to BlogPaws. We know it’s kinda silly fur us to fink dat poor peeps like us on a fixed income kuld even go to sumfin’ as pawsum as BlogPaws, but weez still holdin’ out hope dat sumfin’ happens and we get to go.

 BlogPaws2015-RegPriceAd-300x250

So the educational part of our post starts now. Most of you know this has been a strange winter, and bad in a lot of places. The spring and summer usually bring tornadoes and fires in our part of the country. So if things turned bad and you had to evacuate your home in an instant because of an emergency, are you prepared? And would you have what you needed for your furry family members? Or is everything strewn about your home and in the cabinets where it belongs? And have you thought about what you might need in an emergency?  The most important thing to remember is that it’s better to evacuate with your pets than to hope they survive and you’ll be reunited once the storm/emergency clears. Think of all those poor animals left behind in recent years. Some of those animals still haven’t been reunited with their families, and some didn’t make it at all. You don’t want that to be your furry family member.

Hoep youz like minez foto, mommy neerlee droev us off da rode taykin' it. MOL

The first thing you should look for is shelters that take both you and your pet. Everybody’s going to be on edge, and your pet would be far more comfortable with you than in a cage. But in a bind, you should know appropriate boarding facilities and their requirements. Most if not all shelters/boarding facilities require your pet be up to date on all vaccinations. Then you need to think about catching your furry family. Most animals, cats especially, hide when they hear storms or sirens, etc.. You need to work with them when weather is good to be sure you can get them in a carrier which is safest for all concerned in an emergency situation. So keeping your carrier in the top back of the closet isn’t really the best place for it. It should be easily accessible. And something your pet at least tolerates. You can help your pets get comfortable by using the crate when feeding or playing and for going somewhere other than the Vet every once in a while. Maybe throw in a favorite toy, blanket or bed. Or even better a piece of clothing worn by you. Unwashed of course, you want your scent to be on it. It goes without saying, but you should swap out the item of clothing every once in a while so the scent stays fresh.

 hard shell pet crate

Now that you’ve got Fluffy or Fido into the carrier what else do you need? Just as you need a first aid kit for the humans in your family, you should have one for your furry family members as well. And it should be stored in an accessible area, ideally close to the carrier(s) you intend to use. And you need a bag packed with the essentials your pet might need for at least 2 weeks. That means everything your pet uses on a daily basis should be in that bag. Food, does your pet need a special diet? Or are they extremely finicky? During a time like this your pet is already stressed, don’t add to it by changing their diet if at all possible. Do they take medicine for any illnesses? Unless they have to be refrigerated, you should have an extra supply in the first aid kit. We will give you a list of other items for your kit shortly. If they do need refrigeration, you should have an extra supply in an easily grabbable baggie and an ice pack kept cold and ready at all times. Something a lot of people don’t think about is WATER. Water isn’t the same even in your own town, so you need to have a gallon or two of the water you give your pet daily on hand. Sometimes pets won’t drink water from somewhere else. And it could also upset their tummies. Always remember, your pet is already stressed; do everything you can to make this less stressful for them by keeping those things you can control as normal as possible. Taking water on trips with your pets is a good habit to get into. (mommy’s personal experience)

 0dw Dezi in stroller

Now you’ve got your carrier, food, water and  medicines, what else could you possibly need, right? I.D.. Your furry family member should have identification in the event you get separated. Tags are great, but remember they can get lost or taken off. Micro-chipping is the most popular method of identification these days. Sis Lexi also has a tattoo. This was popular when she was young. It can be found in the right ear of cats and right above the tight thigh on the belly of dogs and usually consists of a letter and 3 numbers. Usually the areas with the least amount of fur. We are both micro-chipped as well. But if you don’t keep your information up to date, it does no good. So check it every once in a while. And if possible when you have more than one animal try to keep them registered at the same place. Lexi was micro-chipped years before me, and so her chip is registered with a different company. But the company me be registered with, PetLink, let us add sis Lexi’s chip number and profile with them for a very minimal 1 time fee. So if your furries have a microchip make sure they’re registered and the information stays updated. You should also put your pets and your information on their carriers along with an emergency contact number that is out of your area. It’s also a good idea to keep a copy of your pets vaccination records and any special instructions either with the carrier or in your first aid kit. Remember to keep current copies of these and destroy the old ones.

 ASPCA first aid kit

So we keep talking about a first aid kit and you want to know what should be in it. This is probably not a comprehensive list, so you might want to check with your local humane society for any updates or new requirements or products. You should also have a Rescue Alert Sticker on the window or door of your home. You can get one free here. But here’s a list of what’s in ours and some recommendations from PetMD and the ASPCA. You can also buy first aid kits, but being on a fixed income, mommy made ours. Along with the afore mentioned items, you will need to include:

1. Current photos of your pet and any proof of ownership in a plastic baggy. (vet records will suffice)

2. Phone numbers for you, your Vet, and an emergency contact person who is not in your area and might not be affected by your emergency. Phone lines and cell towers may be down.

3. Gauze pads and adhesive tape and/or the sticky wrap

4. Cotton balls and swabs

5. Hydrogen Peroxide

6. Disposable Gloves

7. Scissors and tweezers

8. Antibiotic Ointment and Anti Itch Cream

9. Oral Syringe and/or Turkey baster

10. Alcohol

11. Styptic Powder/Pencil

12. Claw Clippers

13. Artificial Tear Gel

14. Band Aids (mommy keeps a few in our kit for her if she gets bit or clawed while trying to trim claws or care for a wound-they don’t take up that much room)

Be sure to check your kit every 3 months or so for expired items. Always keep your kit fresh and up to date.

Here’s a list of other items you will also need to keep near your emergency kit.

1. Disposable litter trays or liners and litter or paper and a scoop. often a hard shell carrier can second as a litter box in a pinch. For really picky cats (like us) mommy recommends a couple of gallon bags of litter so you can spread it out on the paper so kitty feels like they’re using their litter box.

2. Dawn dish soap. It’s a great disinfectant and will cut oil.

3. Paper towels and/or old wash cloths

4. Feeding bowls

5. Extra collar, harness, and leashes. You never know what may happen.

6. Flashlight

7. Blankets, pillow cases (for throwing over scared pets and for them to lay on.)

8. And don’t forget a few of your pets favorite toys.

I'z do lubz diz nip nana.
I’z do lubz diz nip nana.

As we said in the beginning this is not a comprehensive list, but as close to it as we can get. If your pet is something other than a cat or dog, you may need additional items. But remember, your pet should be evacuated with you if at all possible. You wouldn’t leave your 2 year old child behind, so why would you leave your pet?!! Yes we will be stressed, but we would be far more stressed without you. And if you admit it to yourself, you’ll be a lot more stressed worrying about how we’re doing and if we’re still alive.

0dw Dezi laying with nana

Well dat’s it fur today. Hope weez helped ya’ out in purrpawin’ fur an emergency. We hope yous wuld never need to use this infurmation. But mommy sez it’s always better too be purrpared than to be caught wiff yous pants down.  And as a cat scout ow motto is “Be Purrpawed”.

So till da nex time……………………….Be Blest!!!

You know weez been writin’ ‘bout mommys doctow pointment day now fur a while cuz it seems sumfin’ always happens. And yesfurday wuz no diffewent. Mommy had told me we kuld write ‘bout sumfin’ els this mumff and then we went and…well let’s just say you all shulda been there.

 dw Dezi on tree

It stawted out purretty much like any udder day. We all got wound and mommy opened da door and stawted singin’, “Here comes da sun.” OMC Wuz we ever glad to see mr. Sunshine. A lot of da ice wuz melted, and it wuz wunnewful. Unbeknownst to me tho’ mommy wuz nervous ‘bout patches of black ice, so her wuz goin’ back and  forff all meownin’ ‘bout whether or not to wisk takin’ me wiff her. Wiffout me mommy gets ‘bout a 30 second warnin’ afur her passes out. Wiff me she gets almost 30 minutes. But since she wuz disabled due to a caw accident she worries ‘bout da udder idiots on da road and da wedder of course. She dusn’t like to put Lexi or me at wisk ifin her can help it, so she wuz weally finkin’ ‘bout leavin’ me at home. Well time to go and mommy ‘cided me wuld stay wiff Lexi, so she left and headed out to da doctow ‘bout 10 minutes up da stweet. Me watched and waited on da cat twee fur mommy to come home.  And then…

 0dw Dezi in stroller4

Me saw mommy come walkin’ up da walk. She came in and saw me and sed, “It’s not bad at all honey. Come on, you’re goin’ with me to town.”  Into da stwoller me went and we wuz off. Da highway wuz nice and clear and you kuldn’t even tell there had been snow or ice only a day earlier. Mommy sed she talked to a man at da doctows office dat sed da kids had been outta school since Tuesday. So we wusn’t da only ones hoo fawt it wuz bad. Anyways, we finally got to da fawmacy. And fank catness, cuz mommy had da caw weally hot. Me had to tell hers to turn down da heat cuz me wuz furyin’ in meez long fur coat. we dwopped of mommys scwipt and told them we wuz gunna go a foo doors down and let me visit wiff meez furiends at da bank. Well…dat’s when fings changed. We wuz stwollin’ down da stweet and suddenlly mommys cane went sideways, fwuntways, backways and then it wuz just flyin’ and mommy wuz slippin’ an slidin’ and…KAPOOEY!!!  Down mommy went, wight on hers hineybo. You shulda seen it. Yous shulda seen me lookin’ at it. You shulda seen mommy’s face. But wait, it dusn’t stop there.

 dwDezi Have a Great Saturday - 2HEoW-1en - normal

When mommy stawted losin’ hers balance she sumhow pushed da stwoller and me went rollin’ down da stweet. Me wuz watchin’ mommy flailin’ and getting’ further and further away fwum her. Me wuz meowin’ and mommy wuz hollewin’ fur me. Me kuld hear her, “Dezi, Oh sweet Dezi. Sumpawdy save my baby!!!” Well sumpawdy musta heard us or seen mommy cuz a littlle old gway haired lady on hers own cane came walkin’ outta one of da doors and stood over mommy. Mommy wuz scweamin’ and pointin’ at me, and da little old gway haired lady on hers own cane came runnin’ toward me. You shulda seen her. OMC–MOL Me wuz still rollin’ and didn’t fink dat lady had any chance of catchin’ up to me, but suddenly me felt a jolt and me stopped. Da little old lady wuz wavin’ hers awms all over da place and yellin’. Me looked out da udder side and there stood this big ole man holdin’ onto da stwoller and sayin’ “It’s okay, I’ve got it. Don’t fall.” Then all meez furiends fwum da bank came outside and one of them pushed me over to mommy where anudder couple of them wuz helpin’ hers up. Dat black ice mommy had been worried ‘bout…we had hit a patch. Mommy kuldn’t wait to get back home. Hers a little bwuised up and sore, but nun da worse fur da wear, and meez had an adventure me will never furget. MOL  So weez’ll be takin’ it easy this weekend no doubt.

Till da nex time…………….Be Blest!!!
