Service Cats: There Is No Bully Cat Breed: The Instincts of Cats

Meowllo and welcome to another Service Cat Monday. It’s cold and windy here, but fur the moment, we have sunshine and shadows. Mommy wanted me to let everypawdy know, that we might be writin’ a couple things today that will upset a few folks; but ifin you’ll stick with us, we purromiss you’ll unnerstand our point. We welcome all your questions, comments and suggestions. The only thing we ask, is that when askin’ a trainin’ or behavioral question, purrlease try to be as specific as pawssible. We’re not mind readers, and do wanna try to help ya’ out. But without specifics (you can even include an example) we can’t be sure ifin we’re actually givin’ ya’ the right tips. You can leave those questions/suggestions in the comments or send us an email. As with all our Service Cat postys, the followin’ will be written in Human English fur translator and reader ease. Our Trainin’ posts aren’t meant to be a step by step manual as trainin’ is all ‘bout Repetition and Rewards. Our Trainin’ posts include tips, tricks and techniques used/developed by mommy throughout her many years of trainin’ animals, cats in purrticular. Ifin you’ve missed any of the posts in this series, you can ketch up by clickin’ on the links at the end of this or any Service cat post. We’ve got some great questions to address, so let’s get to them.

Dezi laying in cat tree in new harness

The question we’re gonna address today, was left last week. We’re not sure if this is an ongoing situation, or one from the past. Never the less, it’s weighed heavy on our minds since it was posted and we feel we just have to address it. The thought of it has haunted mommy all week, because there are currently breed laws in effect in many States against certain dogs because of misconceptions. And mommy couldn’t live with the thought of that happening to kitties. We’ll sum up the example given fur you: A person adopted a female Tuxedo kitty as well as an 8 year old human boy from a chaotic, violent, drug filled environment. Said kitty was terrified of the human boy and retreated to live in cabinets in the basement. Whether or not kitty had been abused, is/was truly unknown to the adopter. It also appeared that the adopter already had a resident Tuxedo male kitty in the home, possibly her littermate (the comment wasn’t specific). When the female Tuxie finally started to venture out of the basement she was bullied by the resident Tuxie male to the point that the adopter had to pen him so that he couldn’t get to her. And here is the question that was asked: Do you think it’s normal for some breeds to just be bullies and pick on those kitties who didn’t have such a good start in life?

Baby Dezi puffed up for intimidation

Me’s not a bad kitty, me’s just assertin’ me’s claim.

The short answer is NO!!! Absolutely Not!!! First, let’s take a look at Cat Breeds in particular. ALL cats are descended from the Middle Eastern Wildcat. That’s right, those smooshed faced Persians, Color Pointed cross eyed Siamese, Floofy, floppy Ragdolls, and every other breed descended from the Felis Silvestris. Through natural gene mutation, cats adapted to their environments. Until that is, humans got involved. Breeders started cross breeding, inbreeding, and manipulating nature to create more desirable traits so they could make money. Don’t you go and hit that unfollow button. Me has a point to make. The results are not always in the best interest of the cat species. Now don’t nobody get angry with us, we’re only presenting the truth. And you know it too. Let’s keep going here. There’s conflicting evidence as to exactly when cats became domesticated, but for sure we’ve been part of human’s lives for at least 9000 years.

 Felis Silvestris

Felis Silvestris

Now let’s take a look at a cat’s natural behavior. Yes, we have a point for all of this, so just bear with us. A cat has four basic functions bred into each and every one of us, wild or domesticated, naturally evolved or with breeder interference. We are born to hunt, eat, sleep and procreate. For the purpose of this post, we’re going to focus on our innate nature to HUNT. Cats are preprogrammed to hunt prey to survive. Yes, even the adorable kitty purring in your lap. Cats have amazing smell receptors. The thing that makes us great Service Cats is our ability to smell the changes in mommy’s chemical make up before she passes out. That ability also lets us smell fear, other animals (prey and/or appropriate mates), changes in the weather, and other scents we encounter.

 Raena playing with wand toy

As most people know, cats are very territorial. Because of our need to defend and claim our territory, unaltered cats, especially males can exhibit unwanted/undesirable behavior such as marking or fighting. Spaying and Neutering goes a long way to alleviate this behavior. However, defending our territory is still paramount. The smell of fear often signals prey; and the scent of another cat, signals a possible change in the hierarchy. That innate need to hunt may cause us to attack a scared or weaker cat, as we see them as prey. Cats desire live prey. Chasing is part of the hunt. A scared cat with it’s tail tucked between it’s legs and running away is a sure sign of prey. And that instinctual desire to chase, catch and kill kicks in. We can’t fight it, it’s part of our nature.

Dezi rolls on the Yeowww nip nana while Raena prepares for an attack

And the need to be “King of our jungle” may cause us to attack a scared or weaker cat. In the wild, only the strong survive to procreate and pass along their genes to the next generation. For these reasons it’s important for our humans to take appropriate steps to introduce new kitties to resident cats. A cat that exhibits fear, requires extra attention from his/her humans in order to rebuild his/her confidence.

Dezi pats Raena on the head

The person who left this question stated that the young boy hadn’t abused the scared cat, but was unsure about the adults in the previous home, yet the cat was fearful of the child initially. We’d like to take a minute not to suggest that the boy had abused the cat, but to relate that children don’t know how to treat animals until they’re taught. Children often approach animals wrongly. It’s not uncommon to hear of a child or even adult who’s been scratched after pulling a tail or trying to restrain a kitty to hard or for too long. Cats can acclimate to chaotic surroundings, but they are generally happier in more structured surroundings.

 Dezi and Raena play

When Raena came to live here, me was unsure about the whole thing. Sis Lexi had left abruptly, mommy and me had been alone for a couple of months and suddenly there was a new smell with an attitude in me’s house. Her innate drive to hunt caused her to chase anything, including me, that ran from her. It wasn’t till me’s tail went up and me stopped running and turned to face her, that she stopped treating me like prey. Because of me’s uncertainty and confusion about everything that had happened, me no doubt smelled like fear, and weakness. One of the most desirable traits of the Ragdoll, is the laid back nature we have. None the less, Raena initially presented as a “bully”. However, she was and is not a “bully”. She was only acting on her feline instincts.

Raena carrying her new nip toy

In conclusion, we say again, NO cat or breed of cat are born “bullies”. Rather, we have an instinctual need to hunt and survive. Some cats have a stronger drive than others, but we all have it. We realize this isn’t much of a training post, but we have several questions about aggressive cat behavior, so we decided to address this issue by introducing the back story to where cats came from and what drives a cat’s existence first. And to stop the perception that any cat is a natural born “bully”. Since we all have the same DNA, that argument would mean that all cats are bullies, and we know that isn’t true.

 Dezi on Liberty Cat Tree

As me just said, we have an aggressive issue comin’ up. But next week, we’re goin’ to meow a bit ‘bout leash trainin’ do’s and don’t’s and include a question from one of our doggy furiends. In the meantime, mommy wants to stress that you don’t walk a puppy while on crutches…EVER!!! That’s an accident waitin’ to happen. ‘Member you can get caught up on any trainin’ posty you missed by clickin’ the links below.

Blest Sunday: Hidden Blessings

MeeeeeOW Welcome to a brand mew Blest Sunday. Ya’ll know how much we luv our Blest Sunday’s, and this week is no different. You know, sometimes the blessings are in your face and ya’ can’t miss ‘em. And sometimes, ya’ have to look a little harder fur them; but either way, they’re always there. As most of ya’ know, sis Raena’s furst birthday was last Furiday, and she got lots of gifts, that she’s sharin’ with me by the way; and we had a great pawrty. But the fun didn’t stop there. As ya’ll saw in our last posty, the gifts kept comin’.

Blest Sunday purple kitty clip art graphic

They sure did sissy. I’s luvs birthdays. And I’s luvs, luvs, luvs our furiends.

Dezi sits on the chair arm and poses

Me does too Raena. And we’ve still got a birthday pizza comin’. Me really purreciates you waitin’ fur the weather to clear up so me can enjoy it too.

No purroblem sissy. It wouldn’t be the same ifin you wasn’t out to enjoy it too. Awnty Anonymous even sent enuff green papers fur mommy to get somethin’ to celebrate with us.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Well Raena, speakin’ of awnty Anonymous, we wanna say a meowsy big fank you again, cuz she sent mommy some more noms this past week. Mommy had actually spoke with her on the fone and knew these things were comin’, she just didn’t know when. So when the furst box arrived, mommy was taken by sur-purrise and as usual, she had a long fankful cry.

Those gifts and mommy’s noms would be the in your face blessings you were meowin’ ‘bout, right sissy?

That’s right Raena. But, we’ve also had some of those not so in your face blessings this past week.

Raena lays on the Liberty cat tree

Do tell sissy. I’s not know how you’re seein’ all these blessings while hidin’ out UTB (under the bed).

Dezi sits on the chair arm and looks out

Me told you, me’s not hidin’ Raena, me’s bein’ safe. And me wasn’t UTB the whole time. Me was drivin’ mommy to the bathroom every meownin’. And me came out to eat and play a few games and even nap a few times…till the thunder boomers started. Me was even doin’ really good this meownin’ till you jumped into the door tryin’ to get that birdy.

Raena carries a Christmas toy from Cat and Lisa

Well, who knew the door wasn’t gonna open. That birdy’s lucky I’s couldn’t get to it. Hoverin’ at our door tauntin’ me like that, it deserved whatever it was gonna get.

Dezi bathes in front of the fireplace

Yeah, Uh Huh, Sure. (Dezi licks her fur) Raena, the mighty huntress. Like you would’a even known what to do with that birdy ifin you could’a got to it.

Are you doubtin’ mine’s exceptional huntin’ skills sissy? Cuz you know mommy says I’s the greatest huntress in the house.

Mommy says a lot of things Raena. Ya’ notice she said in the house, and not somethin’ like, in the universe?.

Raena lays on the back of the chair while Dezi looks up at her from the seat of the chair

I’s don’t know what you’re meowin’ ‘bout sissy. Mommy doesn’t lie. So all I’s know, is that I’s the Great Huntress. Now, let’s get back to those hidden blessings you were meowin’ ‘bout a minute ago.

 Dezi sits on scratcher

Yeah, we better do that befur me says somethin’…

Anyways, as most of our furiends know, mommy had some complications from her recent oral surgery. After havin’ a loose stitch removed at her 2 week recheck, a hole opened inside mommy’s mouth up into her sinuses. Not only was it gross, aggravating and painful, it was also dangerous and could’a required a second surgery to close that hole. We asked our furiends to join us in purrayin’ that the hole would safely close on it’s own and that mommy would be okay. And guess what? The last couple of days have been pawsum. Ain’t nuffin’ comin’ outta mommy’s nose that isn’t s’posed too. She can brush her teeth, swish, gargle, eat and drink without worryin’ ‘bout it comin’ out her nose again. What a blessin’ that is. Mommy’s gonna have to check with the surgeon to see when she can purrceed with the rest of the work she needs done. And hopefully, we’ll have enuff green papers to finish all the work so mommy will feel all better.

Ifin mommy gets all better sissy, will she not need us to be Service Cats anymore?

No, Raena. Mommy will still need us to be Service Cats. The work we do doesn’t have anythin’ to do with mommy’s teeth purroblems. She’s always gonna need us Raena, don’t worry.

Fanky fanks sissy. I’s luvs mine’s life, mommy and you. I’s wouldn’t wanna live anywhere else.

 Purple dandelion

You don’t ever have to worry ‘bout that Raena. When mommy told you it was furever, she meant it. Mommy also said it was a blessin’ to watch you experience all the fursts this year. Mommy said, at her age, she’s furgotten a lot of the wonders in life and nature. But watchin’ you get x’cited by the wind, or seein’ your furst birdy up close, or you tryin’ to smell the dandelion befur the wind blows it’s seed petals away remind her how purrecious and fragile this life is.

 Purple wind cloud

Did you see that wind sissy? It’s whoopin’ those trees ‘round like they ain’t even there. I’s didn’t think those ole branches could move like that. Mommy called it the dance of Spring.

Cat blowing kisses emoji

3 cats meowing thank you

Ya’ can’t actually see wind Raena. But me did see those branches dancin’ ‘round out there. Me can hear ‘em scrapin’ the roof too. Me just hopes they all stay on the trees and don’t break off and break anythin’. The point is, blessings are all ‘round us, we just have to take a minute and see ‘em. As we do every week, we’d like to remind everypawdy to take a moment today and every day to give Thanks fur the blessings in your lives. And we wanna fank you all fur bein’ our furiends and sharin’ your lives with us.

Don’t furget ‘bout the Sunday Selfies with the Kitties Blue sissy. I’s gotta go back to the door and watch fur that birdy to come back.

See ifin you can find a sun puddle too Raena.

Chatting Cats: Still Storming and Thank Yous

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me RaenaBelle. Was mine’s birthday pawrty amazin’ or what? I’s could do that every day. I’s sure do wanna fanky fank all our furiends fur comin’. The pawrty wouldn’t have been any fun without ya’.

Raena sits in a box that had birthday gifts from the Tomcat family

Raena, me told you birthdays only happen once a year. You’re gonna have to wait till next year to have another birthday pawrty.

Is that a long time sissy? That seems like a long time. Will it still be stormin’ and rainy? Cuz I’s would like the sun shine on mine’s birthday.

It’s not that long Raena. As fur the storms and sun shine, nopawdy can know that fur sure. Y, The weather guessers said earlier this week that the sun was gonna reign supreme all week. But just take a look outside and tell me ifin you see any sun puddles?.

Dezi and Raena sit on the Liberty cat tree and look outside

Enjoy Raena, mommy says da sun’s leavin’ as quick as it got here.

I’s don’t see sun puddles sissy, but I’s do see that momma birdy that made her nest in mommy’s old flower pot basket. She’s been busy. Did you hear her callin’ the lawn crew names yesfurday? And mommy thought she was vishus the day she attacked her. Hmmmpht  I’s think she actually pooped on one of those lawn men. She was swoopin’ down and cacklin’ louder than ther machines. It was a sight to see.

 Baby birds in nest

No, me didn’t see all that Raena, but me’s glad you enjoyed the show. Mommy said the babies are gettin’ bigger and have lots of feathers now. Me’s gotta tell ya’, they sure are the quietest babies me’s ever seen. We’ve never actually heard them peepin’ fur food. They really must have a good mommy.

 Baby birds in nest

Yeah sissy, mommy says every time she’s gone out there, they’re quiet as can be. The only one doin’ any squawking’ is the mommy bird. I’s can’t wait till they start learnin’ to fly. Ya’ reckon mommy’ll let us go out and play with ‘em?

That ain’t happenin’ Raena. You know mommy’s a bit of a germ-a-fobe, and those birdies purrobably have mites and who knows what else. (Dezi shudders

Mites?!! I’s sure don’t want any birdy cooties sissy. Guess it’s a good thing mommy knows those kinds of things, so we don’t get into any trouble. Maybe, our Trout Towne furiends are on to somethin’ not likin’ birds. Our delishus freeze dried chicky breasts don’t have any mites, do they sissy?

Nah Raena, by the time they get put into bags and shipped to our house, any mites and cooties they might have had have been all cleaned up. Speakin’ of freeze dried chicky breasts…

Raena checks out her 1st birthday gift from the Tomacat family

Oh sissy, you were ‘bout to mention mine’s birthday purresents weren’t ya’? Fanky fank you uncle Pete, Timmy, Einstein, Fitz, Toby, Rumpy, Buddy Budd and Buttons. I’s luvs, luvs, luvs mine’s birthday purresents. And yes, I’s sharin’ with sissy. Those topper bottles are filled to overflowin’ with freeze dried chicky breasts and bonito flakes. They’re sooooooo delishus. And that sardine tin is great. Yeowww makes some of the bestest nip toys ever. Ya’ll didn’t have to get me anythin’, but I’s sure do ‘purreciate it. I’s such a blest kitty girl.

Dezi, sniffs Raena's birthday gifts from the Tomcat family

You’re also a spoiled kitty girl.

Raena tries to open the Yeowww sardine tin from the Tocat family

Oh sissy, mommy says that’s like the pot callin’ the tea kettle somethin’. Mommy says you’re purrlenty spoiled too.

Of course me is. And me’s purroud of it. MOL  Me knows me has a great life, and pawsum furiends. Let’s go finish brekky befur the storms start up again, Raena.

Okay sissy. I’s gonna link up with the Pet Parade furst and I’s’ll join ya’ in a minute. Don’t eat all mine’s toppers.

Happy Birthday to angel Lexi in a heavenly frame with wings

Tomorrow would have been sis Lexi’s 18th birthday. Mommy’s been a little sad this week and really missin’ her. So we need to give mommy some extra luvvin and cuddles.

Raena lays in mommy's lap

I’s all over that sissy. I’s luvs givin’ mommy luvs and cuddles. I’s just wish the weather would purrk up so we could go fur a stroll. That would fur sure make mommy feel better. We hope all our furiends have a pawsum weekend. Join us next week fur an amazin’ give away and another great Service Cat Monday posty.

Solid Gold SeaMeal™ #ChewyInfluencer

Hey Raena, is that nip in your noms?

Dezi watching Raena while they eat

Nip? Where’s the nip? I’s don’t smell any nip.

In your noms, silly. That green stuff, there, in your food.

 Solid Gold SeaMeal dry

Oh, that. No sissy, that’s not nip. It’s Solid Gold SeaMeal. You know, us anipals are eatin’ better and better all the time. Our pawrents are gettin’ more label savvy and tryin’ more and more natural purroducts to keep us healthy. And when that happens, supplements start showin’ up as regualr additions to meal time. Fankfully, as Chewy Influencers, we get the oppurrtunity to try a lot of these supplements and foods. And this month, mommy thought we should try the Solid Gold SeaMeal. You tried it earlier in the month, but…well, let’s look at what exactly this is befur we get to the taste testin’.

 Chewy Logo

Disclaimer: We received the Solid Gold SeaMeal in exchange for our honest opinion. Neither Chewy nor Solid Gold are responsible for the opinions expressed in this post unless otherwise stated. As always, we tell only the truth as we see it. And we only bring products we use or have tried and think would be of interest to you, our readers and friends.

The Solid Gold SeaMeal is a nutritional supplement that says it supports the overall wellness for cats and dogs. Let’s look at the ingredient list:

Ingredients

  1. Dried Seaweed Meal, Flaxseed, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation Product,Dried Trichoderma Reesei Fermentation Solubles, Dried Rhizopus Oryzae Fermentation Product, Dried Pineapple, Dried Lemon Peel, Lactose.

Solid Gold SeaMeal

Me bets the Seaweed meal is why it’s green. The bottle says it has digestive enzymes to help us anipals utilize our food more efficiently. That’s the reason mommy wanted us to try it. We received the 8 oz. jar, which is $12.99. But it also comes in a 1 pound jar and 5 pound jar fur those bigger doggies or multiple anipal households. The jar also includes a 1 teaspoon size scoop to make measurin’ easy. Let’s go ahead and take a look at what Chewy says ‘bout the Solid Gold SeaMeal.

Key Benefits

  • Nutritional supplement to support overall wellness in dogs and cats that combines natural seaweed with flaxseed meal and digestive enzymes

  • Made with red, green, and brown seaweed that provides vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants

  • Contains flaxseed, an abundant source of omega-3 fatty acids to boost the immune system and promote optimal skin and coat health

  • Digestive enzymes help pets utilize their food more efficiently and helps pets suffering from chronic digestive upset, vomiting, or diarrhea

  • Easy to administer: just sprinkle on top of your pet’s meal at each feeding

We have quite a few furiends that have those tummy troubles, so mommy was really excited fur us to try this out to repurrt the effects. We’re always tryin’ to help our furiends find natural solutions when pawssible. And knowin’ kitties offen want what some other kitty’s eatin’, mommy looks fur things that can be safely given to all the anipals in the house.

That’s right sissy. And just the other day mommy was talkin’ to somepawdy ‘bout all the vitamins and minerals added to commercial pet foods; and how so offen, fish oil is used to purrvide the Omega-3 fatty acids. As most everypawdy knows, we’re not big on fish in our house. And more and more kitties are developin’ allergies to fish purroducts. Mommy was happy to see Flaxseed on the ingredient list ‘stead of some fish oil. Serving the Solid Gold SeaMeal is a little different from a lot of these supplements. The directions on the bottle say to add it to the food, pour in some warm water and stir. The directions on Chewy say to mix it with 1/4 inch of warm water in the bottom of the bowl/plate and add food over the top. The jar also recommends spreading the “dose” out over 2 meals a day for the life of your pet.

Solid Gold SeaMeal mixed with water

Mommy tried the jar’s instructions furst. She mixed the SeaMeal into our food and served it to us. ‘Member me said it’s green? Well, after mixin’ our food with it, so was our noms. Neither of us seemed to be the least bit innerested in eatin’ green food. So mommy went back and followed the instructions on Chewy, and mixed it up in the bottom of our plates and added our noms over the top. As most of ya’ know, we like a little gravy, so this option worked much better to get us to eat it. A kitty me’s size, is s’posed to get 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon a day. Now that doesn’t sound like a lot, but when you’re adding it to food, it actually makes a big difference and changes the taste of our noms. Never the less, knowin’ mommy was only tryin’ to help, me gladly ate it all up. ‘Bout an hour later, me horked up a green blobby mess right on the carpet. To say mommy wasn’t purrleased, would be puttin’ it mildly. Oh, she wasn’t angry with me, she just hadn’t planned to clean the cawrpet that day. MOL

Dezi eating dinner

Of course, mommy knew me could’ve just had an upset tummy, or hairball, so a couple of days later, mommy gave me the Solid Gold SeaMeal again. And again, within an hour of eatin’, me horked up a green blobby mess. This happened 2 more times, befur mommy ceased addin’ the SeaMeal to me’s food. It has great ingredients, and me gladly ate it; but it didn’t seem to sit well in me’s tummy. So me would have to give it 2 paws up.

Raena looks up from her plate of food with a little bite stuck to her lip/

I’s sorry you horked sissy. I’s know that’s not fun at all. Fankfully, I’s didn’t have that same purroblem. I’s happily ate the Solid Gold SeaMeal gravy and kept it down. And you’re right, it does have great ingredients, so I’s would give it 3 paws up. I’s took a paw off cuz you couldn’t eat it sissy. And I’s want mine’s noms to be just like yours. Mommy wasn’t thrilled that you kept throwin’ it up either, and cuz of that, she couldn’t add it to both our noms. And since you have a habit of stealin’ mine’s noms, mommy can’t add it to mine’s foods without worryin’ that you’ll eat ‘em and hork. So fur that reason, mommy gives the Solid Gold SeaMeal 1 thumb up. So, while it might not be fur every kitty, it’s still a great supplement.

Dezi sits in a chewy box

And of course, Chewy is always a great place to shop fur your pets needs. And ifin you set up an auto ship, you’ll never have to worry ‘bout runnin’ out of your pets favorite noms or treats. Don’t worry, you’ll get an email reminder in purrlenty of time to make changes, skip, cancel or delay. And Chewy has great Customer Service Reps, so you can always shop with confidence. And they offur speedy furee shippin’ on all orders of $49.00 and up, and a flat rate on all others.
