Dezi laying in cat tree in new harness

So, last week we talked about Training kitty to play with toys and not hands or feet. Awnty Juliea had asked a 2 part question; the second part being about getting a playmate or “Buddy Cat” for her newly adopted Patzy. So today, we’re going to discuss the dynamics of adding a second cat to your home. Does your kitty want a friend? Would adding another cat help calm an Aggressive cat? Is my cat lonely? Am I adopting another cat for the right reasons? All of those and more are loaded questions; but questions we get asked a lot. Each cat is different, and will respond to a new addition in a variety of ways.

Dezi and Raena atop the liberty cat tree with Yeowww toy

In recent years some shelters and rescues will only adopt young kittens in pairs. The idea being that if they grow up together, they will be happier and better pets. More often than not, kittens raised together will bond and become the best of friends, however, the opposite can also be true. Even littermates can grow into enemies. While this is rare, it can and does happen.

Dezi looks at Raena at the top of the Liberty cat tree

So, you adopted a kitten between the ages of 6 months and a year old. Kitty is a little more aloof than you had expected, or has some undesirable behaviors. Will adding another kitty help? Your needs, desires and wants must be secondary. Always make your resident cat’s personality and needs first. Do Not rely on a second kitty to change the behaviors of the resident cat. Kittens learn boundaries from their mothers and littermates in the first 6 to 8 weeks. A cat that was taken away from his/her mother too young will miss out on some of those lessons. A “Friend” or “Buddy Cat” is not the same. It’s better to Train the resident cat appropriate behaviors before introducing a friend in the mix. As we’ve discussed in earlier posts, introducing a new cat into the home can often come with it’s own challenges.

Dezi cares for Raena atop the Liberty cat tree

Although feral cats will gravitate to a colony for survival, and cats can live happily in multicat/pet households, they are by nature a solitary animal. That being said, we personally like to see more than one cat in a home. If you have a dominant cat, we suggest adopting a slightly older kitty with a more sedate personality. If kitty is more laid back, bordering on the lazy side, we recommend a slightly more playful kitty. And we do mean Slightly. It’s never a good idea to adopt an overly playful kitty/kitten as a friend for your older more laid back kitty. Although mommy and others have successfully integrated young kittens into homes with older cats, it poses quite a few challenges. Breed traits become very important when doing this. Remember, your resident cat’s needs must be given priority.

Raena stands on perch and looks out door

I’s can see any intruder from here.

Awnty Juliea did make note that Patzy reacted by hissing and acting territorially when she saw another cat from her window in her yard. This is typical behavior and doesn’t really determine how a cat will act toward a new kitty in the home. However, there will be hissing almost anytime a new addition is added to the home. Cats have a hierarchy and this is one way they communicate that. Me still hisses at Raena every time she follows me up the cat tree and tries to trip me. Till the day she left us, sis Lexi hissed at me every time me stuck me’s nose up her behind. But, we loved each other very much and got along great, like me and Raena. So if you decide to add a “Friend” be prepared for some growing pains and hisses.

Dezi and Raena play

Well c’mon squirt, let’s play.

We recommend asking the shelter or rescue where you adopt kitty, how well they get along with others. We also recommend not waiting too long to adopt that new friend. The longer a cat lives a solitary (only cat) life, the less likely they will be to truly accept a “Friend”.

Dezi and Lexi laying together on the bed

The hardest part about answering this question, is that we’re not there. We don’t know your cat, their personality or how they interact with others. So, of course we can’t give a definite answer as to whether or not you should adopt a new kitty. Remember, when you adopt a cat/kitten, it’s a lifetime commitment!!! Not an “Oooops, it didn’t work out” commitment. Watch your cat, if they’re truly lonely, they will give you signs, usually inappropriate behavior (severe pica, excessive meowing, excessive chewing, etc.). This can be corrected by you spending more quality time with kitty. We can’t stress enough how important it is to make the resident kitty a priority.

Lexi and Dezi lay together on window perch

Do Not adopt a Friend for your cat, just because your resident cat isn’t quite what you had hoped for. What do we mean? Well, maybe you wanted a lap cat, but after getting kitty home, you discover they’re not much for being held, much less laying around in your lap. Again, a little extra quality time spent with kitty and some Training, can change that over time. But it’s unfair to the resident cat and the “Friend Kitty” to adopt a possibly unwanted friend just so you can have a lap full of fur. Our final remarks on this subject would be to adopt 2 kitties at the same time if you possibly can. This will improve the chances of acceptance and happiness in your home. We also recommend trying to adopt kitties around the same age and activity level. And always remember, every cat can use some Training. We wish anyone who is adding a kitty to their home the best of luck. And we thank you for saving a life.

Raena hugs Dezi while she lays on the brown cat tree

I’s luvs you thiiiiiiiiiiiis much sissy.

We do hope this has helped somewhat. Sorry we can’t tell you exactly what to do, but we think if you spend enough time with your resident kitty, you’ll get your answer. Blest Sunday: A New Old Window

Hey Raena, will you quit playin’ fur a minute and come help me write our Blest Sunday posty!!!

Blest Sunday purple kitty clip art graphic

But sissy, can’t you see what’s goin’ on? Look’it all this extra room we have now. And check out this new window we have to look out. What does it mean? Are we movin’ or somethin’?

Dezi watches from atop the Liberty cat tree

Yes, me sees it Raena. And no, we’re not movin’. We didn’t get that lucky. MOL  And, that window’s been there all along. You ‘member befur mr. W died he had bought this little freezer fur storin’ eatables. Well, he never used it and when he died, his furmily didn’t want it, so they gave it to us. ‘Course, we couldn’t use it either cuz we already had a big chest freezer that mommy couldn’t get in to. And, cuz of the bad wirin’ in our ‘pawrtment mommy didn’t wanna plug both freezers in and chance an outage. Mommy’s been wantin’ to sell that old chest freezer fur years, but couldn’t even get to it to take fotos. Well, the new old neighbors that helped mommy with the car, wanted that old monstrosity. So mommy gave it to them fur helpin’ her with the car, and they came to get it yesfurday. That’s why everythin’ was moved outta the dinin’ room and some things got boxed up.

Dezi and Raena in hall way

Now where’d that cat tree go? It was here just a few minutes ago.

I’s kind’a liked the brown cat tree bein’ in the hall. I’s got to see all kinds of new things sissy. Did you know ifin you paw at that round thing (smoke alarm) hangin’ on the wall long enuff it would scream like that? It sure was loud.

Dezi atop Liberty tree with Raena climbing up to join her

Yep Raena, and it sure scared mommy. Me doesn’t think you were s’posed to be pawin’ at stuffs on the wall. Fankfully, the new old neighbors put the house back together befur they left. And, mommy furinally got to plug in that new little freezer.

Wha’d’ya’ reckon mommy’s gonna put in it sissy?

Who knows Raena. Me’s just glad we got rid of that giant space taker. It had been a blessing that stayed far past it’s due date.

Dezi looks at Raena from atop the liberty cat tree

But, a blessin’ is a blessin’ sissy, and we’re fur sure blest kitties. So far, the car seems to be doin’ well. I’s heard mommy on the fone with the dentist office the other day makin’ a ‘pointment to get her teethies re-lined. Her mouth is healin’ right up. She’ll be in her purrmanent dentures befur we know it. Fanky fank the cats and all our angels, that bill has been paid in full.

You know what that means don’cha Raena? Ifin the car holds out, you’ll be goin’ to the V E T soon.

 Raena lays belly up

Yeah, I’s not lookin’ furward to that sissy, but I’s reckon, ifin mommy thinks it’s necessary, then I’s must need to go. Besides, I’s been sneezin’ a lot and mine’s eyes are really gettin’ gobbed up. Mommy says it looks like I’s have some allergy purroblems like her.

Me’s noticed that Raena. Me sure hopes they can give ya’ somethin’ to make you feel all better. We’re blest to have a mommy who cares ‘bout us so much. We’re also blest to have such pawsum furiends. Meowin’ of furiendly blessings, we wanna say fank you to uncle Pete, Timmy and the gang fur sendin’ us a few green papers to get us a little treat. With everythin’ that’s been goin’ on here lately, we’d all been a little blue and money’s been a little tighter than normal. We also wanna fank awnty Vonda fur sendin’ some green papers too.

Yep sissy, things have been tight. Mommy’s been countin’ our food nuggets and sayin’ she sure purrays we have enuff to get by till our auto ship ships. I’s sure hope that doesn’t mean we’re gonna run outta noms sissy. What would we eat?

Dezi and Raena eat Primal Freeze dried Cat food

Mmmmmm I’s sure do like mine’s Primal Freeze Dried Rabbit,

don’t you sissy? (Dezi meowmbles)  Don’t bother me Raena,

me’s busy eatin’.

Don’t worry Raena, mommy will figger somethin’ out. She always does. Mommy says God will purrvide. Anyways, we’re so fankful to have so many blessings and so many amazing furiends. We wanna remind everypawdy to take a minute today and every day to give thanks fur the blessings in your lives.

Don’t furget sissy, we’re linkin’ up with the Kitties Blue fur Sunday selfies.

Chatting Cats: A Winning Dress & Pawtastic Box #ChewyInfluencer

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. Do ya’ll ‘member this foto from last month?

Raena on cat tree in red dress

Yep, I’s was stylin’ in mine’s old new dress and tryin’ to win the Chewy fashion show. Mommy had gotten the dress when I’s was a little girly. It didn’t fit me back then, but mommy said it reminded her of somethin’ called a hoe down complete with square dancers. I’s haven’t been to any hoe downs or square dances, but I’s do like mine’s dress.

Raena, what are you meowmblin’ on ‘bout?

Raena looks at camera while wearing her red dress,

I’s was meowin’ ‘bout mine’s dress I’s wore fur the Chewy fashion show last month. You ‘member, you wanted me to win so we could get a great surpurrise box from Chewy?.

Dezi and Raena atop the liberty cat tree with Yeowww toy

Yep Raena, me does ‘member that. Me fur sure couldn’t fit into that dress, so it was all up to you.

Raena checks out all her winnings from Chewy

Dezi walks away while mommy shows off her new mug

Well sissy, I’s won. And OMC what a pawtastic box full of goodies we got. Y, They even sent mommy a little sumpin, sumpin. You know how much mommy enjoys her coffee and even hot chocolate in the winter time. Well, now she has this great kitty mug to drink them with. Mommy said to tell everypawdy, ifin they were lookin’ fur a nice sized mug fur themselves or to give as a gift, look no further, this mug is huge and adorable. I’s gotta agree, it really is cute. Anyways, we got some amazin’ goodies all fur us. We got some of our favorite freeze dried treats, and some of those Kittles I’s like.

Dezi checks out all the wwinnings from the fashion contest

Me saw some of those tasty bonito flakes too. But, me’s favorites in the box were the Yeowww nip toys. We shared with Gizmo and his fursibs durin’ their recent visit, and now we got 2 new Yeowww toys fur ourselves. Ya’ can’t beat a blessin’ like that fur sure.

Raena checks out all her winnings from the Chewy fashion contest

That’s the truth sissy. And, we got a new wand toy too. I’s can’t wait to play with mommy. Ya’ know, we think any kitty would be happy with any of the items we got. With Christmas not too far away, our peeps might be lookin’ fur some great Christmas gifts to spoil us with. you can get everythin’ from our winnin’ box right there at Chewy.com

Dezi sniffs wand toy from chewy winning box

Sure ‘nuff Raena. Me bets all the kitties in the shelters would luv any of the goodies we got too. As a matter of fact, they might even come outta their shells a bit and get adopted quicker. We don’t normally post on Fursdays any more, but we fur sure were thinkin’ ‘bout #RememberMe yesfurday. So many anipals will die in shelters without ever knowin’ the luv and wonderment of a furever home. This makes us so sad. But fur the Grace of God…

Dezi and Raena atop the liberty cat tree with Yeowww toy

Oh sissy, mine’s heart just breaks thinkin’ ‘bout all those sweet anipals who never get the chance to be luvved and adored like we do. Purrlease, do everythin’ ya’ can to help those anipals find luvvin’ furever homes. Ifin ya’ can’t adopt yourself, share, share and share again. You never know who might see your posty and be lookin’ fur a furry luv of their own. We really wanna say fank you to Chewy fur our pawsum box. And fank you to everypawdy who has saved a life and shares to save more lives. Looks like this rain ain’t never gonna let up; but, we have new toys to play with. Let’s go play befur the physical therapist gets here to evaluate mommy fur her new wheelchair.

Perfect Form For Tummy Upsets #ChewyInfluencer

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. I’s beginnin’ to think all the sky knows how to do is cry. There’s sure ‘nuff a lot of sads in the world right now, but I’s got paws, not fins. It’s hard ‘nuff to get mommy to let me walk on dry ground, you think she’s ‘bout to let me go prancin’ thru the mud? Not likely. So sky, I’s have a message fur ya’. Rain, rain, go away, and don’t come back again another day. Isn’t that clever? Sissy taught it to me last night while we were huntin’ fur intruders UTB (under the bed).

 Dezi sits in chewy box

What are you meowin’ ‘bout Raena? Me’s not scared of the rain.

‘Course not sissy. I’s was meowin’ that we were lookin’ fur intruders, not hidin’ out.

So long as you’re not fibbin’ on me. Don’t you have a review to do today?

 Chewy Logo

I’s do sissy. We luvs our Chewy, even ifin we don’t always like the things mommy gets fur us. As most peeps know, we both got sick with upset tummies a few weeks ago. Mommy was really worried ‘bout us. You were a little sicker than me, to the point that you were walkin’ funny. Mommy knew you were hurtin’, cuz you walked ‘round almost doubled over. Mommy cried and purrayed so hard fur us to get better. And, she even thought ‘bout takin’ us to the V E T.

Yep sissy, mommy was hopin’ to furm up our runny, run, runs and calm down out tummies. The ingredient list is all good fur ya’ herbs with no controversial ingredients. Mommy thought it was somethin’ like the probiotics we use that she would sprinkle over our noms. At that point she would’a tried anythin’. So, she ordered it post haste. Fanky fanks to Chewy’s speedy shipping in spite of those old hurricanes, mommy had it in her hot little hands in no time. Mommy quickly read the directions and realized she needed to make a gel/paste with it ‘stead of sprinklin’ it over our noms. Since that meant she didn’t need to wait fur meal time, mommy purromptly mixed some up.

 Honest Kitchen Perfect Form

Yep Raena, and then she put it on her finger and offured it to me furst. Me backed away and took off fur pawrts unknown as quick as me’s doubled over body would carry me. Me was faster than white lightnin’. The foto she was tryin’ to take was all a blur.

Raena sniffs honest kitchen perfect form

I’s ‘member sissy. So mommy furst offured it to me like a butter spoon. You know how much we luvs a good butter spoon. But, I’s wan’t havin’ it either. So, mommy tried offurin’ it to me in one of our dinner plates. I’s moved in fur a good sniff and then backed away slowly. It kinda looked like the stinkies all over our bloomers and smelled a bit like it too. Mommy even tried smooshin’ some of it on the tip of mine’s nose so I’s would have to lick it. I’s sure fooled her. I’s shook mine’s head and swiped with mine’s paw till it was all over the floor. Then, I’s went to the bathroom and cleaned mine’s paw off in her teethies holdin’ coffee cup. I’s’ll show her, I’s thought. MOL

Raena backs away from honest kitchen perfect form

You sure did Raena. Me doesn’t think mommy was very amused. She had just cleaned her teethies. While we might not have wanted any pawrt of The Honest Kitchen Perfect Form, we think doggies would lick it all up in no time. Maybe even a few kitties will be tempted by it.

Yeah sissy, we’re just really spoiled and overly picky. The thing is, Chewy has amazin’ customer service peeps. So, you can shop with confidence when you shop with Chewy. And, they offur speedy furee shippin’ on all orders of $49.00 or more and a low flat rate speedy shippin’ on all other orders.
