Service Cats: Am I Training My Cat Or Is She Training Me

MeOW Welcome back to Service Cats and Everything Feline on Furidays. We wanna fank you all fur your patience while we try to get caught up from our week off. We’ve been dealin’ with a small flood here in our apartment fur the last couple of days, so we’re still behind. However, t’ween the flood and a couple of emails we received this week, we’ve decided to take a look at the lighter side of Training this week. Me will tell you more ‘bout that in a minute. We’d like to remind you that you can ketch up on any post in this series by clickin’ the links on our Training Tips and Everything Feline page from our menu. You can submit your questions or post suggestions by leaving a comment or sendin’ us a purrivate e-mail via the form on our Contact page. Purrlease ‘member to be as specific as pawssible when askin’ behavioral questions. Now, let’s get the business outta the way and get on with our posty.

The followin’ post will be written in human English fur reader and translator ease. Our Service Cat posts aren’t intended to be an all inclusive Trainin’ Manual but rather Tips, Tricks and Techniques used/developed by mommy A thru her many years of animal trainin’, cats in purrticular. And to offur insight into your questions about Everything Feline. Always remember, Training is all ‘bout Repetition and Rewards.

We often receive comments like,I’d love to train my cat, but, he/she trained me.”, or “My cat does that, but…”. As you know, mommy says all Training should keep the animal and it’s natural behaviors and size in mind, and to be realistic in your expectations. All of mommy’s Training Tips/Techniques involve things cats/dogs do naturally and just tweaks them a bit to accommodate the human need/desire. Mommy says a cat’s curiosity makes us the perfect animal for Training, just as the dog’s desire to please. We cats also want to please our humans, we just don’t show it the same way a doggy does. So, it’s up to you, our human to understand our language for the gratification you’re looking for. Since we’re cats, we’re going to focus on cats today, but as always, most of our Tips can be used for other species.

Most people know that we cats communicate with other animals through scent, rubbing, nose touching, etc.; we reserve most verbal communications for you humans. The more interaction you have with us, the more vocal we will become and the more we will interact with you. The more cat-like you interact with us, the more cat-like responses you will get from us. We’ve told you in earlier posts, that mommy plays the “Scent Me Up” game with all her kitties. It helps us to form a stronger bond with her. It’s also mommy using natural cat behaviors to communicate with us. Let me refresh your memory: Mommy rubs her cheeks, chin and forehead against our faces, chin, ears and forehead in an exchange of scents. This is how we cats would greet one of our family members or beloved housemates; even our larger wilder cousins do this. Our face contains all the good feeling scent glands, so this exchange brings us kitties pleasant and calming feelings. It also makes us very receptive to Training. But, what kind of Training and who’s doing the Training?

Raena lays in mommys lap and starts to massage

Let’s take a look at what mommy calls “Massage”. Kitties knead (make biscuits) naturally. We do it the minute we’re born. It helps move our mother’s milk into the teat so we can suckle and eat. Kneading makes us feel good by bringing up good memories. Kneading is most often accompanied by purring and a form of closed or open mouth suckling. So, mommy takes an innate behavior and makes a few adjustments such as where we knead, Training us to keep our claws sheathed and to knead on demand and it becomes a kitty massage.      As most of you know, one of the most beneficial Tasks we perform for mommy especially when she’s out and about, is alerting before she passes out. We often get asked just what we do. Mommy says our alerts have become more refined through the years, as she’s learned to read them and her desire to bring less attention to the whole thing has lessened. You know, no need for everybody to know what’s happening. Anyways, as me said before, us kitties typically reserve our verbal communication for you humans. When we first sense that mommy’s going to pass out, we paw at her to get her attention and then we do a little turn when in our stroller, or meow to get her to follow us to a chair when at home/loose. And, if at first you don’t succeed…try, try again. If mommy doesn’t respond the first time, we get a bit more vocal with our next alerts. Meowing and chuffing until mommy complies. Again, mommy’s using a cat’s natural abilities to her benefit.

Raena reaching out from the perch to alert mommy
Raena Alerting to Syncope incident

A mother cat will chuff at her kittens to call them to her. Chuffing can also be used to alert others to one’s existence or whereabouts as an alarm, such as a male lion or tomcat defending his territory from intruders. A cat or dog wanting another to follow them may touch noses and turn around excitedly in an attempt to get the attention of the other. So, this is a perfect action for us to use to alert mommy to the need to sit down so she doesn’t pass out and hit the floor.

Dezi atop the cat tree looking down

These are just a couple of examples of our natural abilities being honed to accommodate mommy’s needs as a disabled person. So, to answer the question of Who’s Training Who, we could say a little of both. No doubt your kitty/doggy has Trained you to know when they’re hungry or need to go to the potty. By watching our behaviors, you too can learn how to hone those behaviors to accommodate your needs. We always say every kitty/doggy can use a little Training, even if they’re not going to be a Service Animal. Bonding with your anipal makes both your lives better, and Training helps to form a stronger bond. And, there are plenty of studies to show that cats only enrich the lives of their owners and help their humans to live longer happier lives.

Well, we hope you enjoyed today’s post. Altho’ Training is a very serious matter, remember to keep it fun and natural. Using your cat/dog’s natural abilities will make Training more successful. Don’t forget you can ketch up on any post in this series by checking out our Training Tips and Everything Feline page. Chatting Cats: A Little of This & A Little of That

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. I’s gotta tell ya’, I’s never been so tired of a season in all mine’s 2 years. I’s so ready fur this Spring to show up. I’s beginnin’ to think she’s just a myth or somethin’. Have any of you seen her?

Dezi lays on scratcher with mouth open

RaenaBelle, what in the world are you meowin’ ‘bout now? In all your 2 years huh? Do you even ‘member Spring from last year?

Raena stands atop the scratcher in front of the tv

Well, not ‘zactly sissy, but I’s heard she brings warmer weather. You know, strollin’ weather. Not too hot, not too cold but just right.

Yeah, ‘bout that just right Raena, we live in the South where there’s really no such thing as just right. We may only see a couple of days of Spring befur Summer arrives with all her heat and humidity. (Dezi hears something besides the rain on the walk and runs to the door to look out. She sees the manager coming up the walk with a huge umbrella and hisses and runs for cover. Raena runs after her while looking back towards the door.

Raena steps from tv stand to chair

Wait fur me sissy. Where are we goin’? (Mommy A goes to the door to be given a notice for a 2nd inspection of the month on next Monday. Raena turns around and crawls up into mommy A’s lap and begins a grooming session.) hmmmpht  Another inspection mommy? I’s just don’t unnerstand why these peeps can’t just leave us alone. Who else in the world has intruders in their house every month, sometimes more than once?!! Guess you’ll have to do some cleanin’ mommy.

Dezi stands on tip of stroller-selfie

(Dezi returns to the living room to finish her breakfast. Raena jumps down and eats beside her) Me’s never unnerstood all these inspections either Raena. ‘Course, mommy did learn that they can’t legally intrude more than once a month, so we’ll have to see what happens next week. Anyways, how ‘bout a little birthday meow. Since we were outta town on your birthday and it rained so you didn’t get to do anythin’ special, mommy and me decided we’d have a little celebration fur ya’ this Sunday. It would’a been me’s sis Lexi’s birthday. Since she went to heaven, me’s sure she wouldn’t mind us celebratin’ your life on her special day. We’ll just have a small pawrty and then really throw a bash fur your Gotchaday in June.

That sounds pawsum sissy. I’s sure wish I’s could’a met your sis Lexi. She sounds really amazin’.

Dezi sits pretty in front of fireplace

She was Raena. Mommy says God decided He needed her more than we did and took her back to heaven. Least she’s not sick or in pain anymore. Me really misses her sometimes, but me’s fankful fur the time me did have with her. So, we’ll plan a small pawrty fur Sunday. All of our furiends are invited and mommy says she’ll give us extra treats and playtime.

Raena gets loving while laying in mommy A's lap with her mouth open in a yawn p selfie

This is gonna be fun, sissy. I’s can’t hardly wait. Maybe even Spring will show up. Let’s finish brekky. All this rain makes me wanna take a nap.

Till the next time……………………………………Be Blest!!!

The drive was a little hard on mommy, so she didn’t even make it to bed Sunday night. So, we didn’t get anythin’ done yesfurday. Let me tell ya’, a mommy who’s been up fur 48 hours straight isn’t purretty. I’s sure hope she’s up to visitin’ our furiends today or they’ll start thinkin’ we’ve fallen off the face of the earth.

Dezi sits on a Chewy box

Can of American Journey Cat Food

The ingredients look purretty good and we like the made in the USA pawrt fur sure. But, the only thing that really matters is does it taste good, did we wanna eat it. The cans are packed full, but the gravy’s not very gravy like; so mommy added water to thin it out some. Ya’ know, it’s really ‘purrtant fur us kitties to get that added moisture in our diets. Anyhow, mommy offured us a plate of turkey the furst night. Neither sissy or me wanted any pawrt of that. Mommy says she wasn’t terribly surpurrised since we don’t typically eat any canned turkey.

Yeah Raena, you’d think mommy would get the message and quit tryin’ to get us to eat it.

Mommy says she keeps hopin’ sissy. Anyways, the next day mommy gave us a can of the American Journey chicken bites in gravy. Again, she had to add water to thin out the gravy.

Raena licks at the American Journey canned cat food

Thin or thick, me didn’t like it Raena. Me does think the ingredients look good, but me just didn’t wanna have anythin’ to do with it. However, based on the ingredients, me has to give it a paw up.

Well sissy, I’s did try it. I’s think the look on mine’s face says it all. MOL It was okay, but I’s do purrfur me some rabbit. I’s licked up the gravy and ate a few bites of the meaty pieces befur callin’ it a day. Fanky fankfully, we got to go visit with awnty Nora, Roo and the rest of the kitties at the cat motel and we gave them the rest. Skoshy luvved it. Meowed it was a 4 paws up fur sure. That’s why we always meow, just cuz we don’t luv somethin’ doesn’t mean your kitty won’t. Like sissy, I’s give it 1 paw up too.

That’s so true Raena. Ya’ never know what kitty might like. That’s another pawsum reason to shop with Chewy. Blest Sunday: We’re Late But Still Blest

MeOW C’mon Raena, hurry up mommy. Blest Sunday’s almost over. Here we purromissed everypawdy we’d be back fur Blest Sunday, and we almost didn’t make it. Hmmmpht  Mommy, you’ve always said we could count on purromisses like we can count on day turnin’ into night. Ifin we make a purromiss, we always keep it.

Blest Sunday purple kitty clip art graphic

You’re right baby, I do indeed say that. I’m sorry I forgot to pack the computer. When you got sick this past week and then I got sick, the computer was really the last thing on my mind. But, we’re here now and we are most definitely Blest.

We sure are sissy. What a pawsum weekend we’ve had.

Dezi lays on the cat scratcher while getting ready for the Gotch'a game

Yeah Raena, me’s so very fankful fur all our Blessings. Fur those of ya’ that don’t follow or aren’t furiends with us on facebook, let me tell ya’ what happened earlier in the week. As ya’ know, we were plannin’ on goin’ to BlogPaws fur at least a day and then pawin’ in to visit one of our long time awnties from facebook. The day befur we were to leave, the lawn crew showed up fur their furst visit of the season and stirred up all the allergens and made me sick. Then, in mommy’s haste to pack, she knocked the shelf containin’ her purrfumes off the wall and one of them broke. It was one of her faves by the way. Anyways, the bedroom and the whole house fur that matter smelled like a Furench whorehouse. No offense intended. We really do like the smell of that purrfume.

Yeah sissy, but a little goes a long way. That’s the way it is with those ‘spensive purrfumes. Mommy says she’ll purrobably never be able to replace it.

Dezi poses with awnty Nora at the Cat Motel

Me’s posin’ with awnty Nora.

Anyways….(meowmbles to herself), “Who’s meowin’ this story anyhow?  The very next day, the lawn crew showed up yet again. 2 days in a row. T’ween the purrfume and the lawn allergens, all of us got sick. It looked like our trip was off. Fankfully, mommy had the furthought to ask awnty Kat, Bearcat’s mommy to register us when she got there, so we’ll get our swag bag from the confurence. Still, we had so looked furward to a little break. Mommy really needed a break what with all this nonsense goin’ on with her dentures. So, come Furiday, we took off to visit with awnty Nora and Roo at the Cat Motel. Fanks to awnty Cindy fur the green papers she had sent us fur the tip, mommy decided we were goin’ come hell or high water. And ya’ know what? It poured down rain and we nearly froze our tushies off on Caturday, but, we had a great visit. Least mommy did. Raena and me got to spend the weekend in the greatest motel room ever.

But I’s didn’t get to go shoppin’ fur mine’s birthday purresent sissy. Fanky fanks to awnty Vonda and awnty Anonymous, I’s have birthday money. And mommy said I’s could pick out whatever I’s wanted so long as I’s get somethin’ fur you too.

You’re right Raena, you didn’t get to go shoppin’. but, there wasn’t anywhere to go where we were at anyways; and with all that rain, you wouldn’t have wanted to get out anyways. Besides, mommy purromissed she’d take you shoppin’ when the weather warmed up some. So, you’re still gonna get to pick out your birthday gift, it’s just gonna be a little later.

I’s can’t wait, sissy. ‘Specially since we shared a couple of our Yeowww nip toys with the kitties at the motel. Mommy said they luvved ‘em. I’s so glad we could share and make a couple of kitties really nip happy.

Kitty plays with Yeowww cigar the gurls shared

Me too Raena. Me always gets happy when we share. Well, needless to say, we’re all exhausted. So, we’ll tell ya’ more ‘bout our trip and share more fotos, later. Fur now, we’d just like to fank awnty Nora fur havin’ us fur a visit. We wanna come back when the weather’s better and we can do more visitin’. And we wanna fank you all fur bein’ patient with us while we get caught up and bein’ unnerstandin’ that mommy needed a little time off. We’d also like to remind you all to take a minute today and every day to give Thanks fur the Blessings in your life.
