Raena: Me too sissy, me too. After all, mine’s 2nd birthday is comin’ up this Caturday the 21st. Are you gonna tell me what you and mommy are plannin’ to make it special?

Dezi selfie

Who says we’re plannin’ anythin’ Raena?

Uh, you did sissy and so did mommy. You both said there’d be no actual pawrty on mine’s big day, but ya’ll would make it up to me by doin’ somethin’ really special.

Oh that?! You’re right Raena. There’s no way we’d let your special day pass without doin’ somethin’ special fur ya’. Ya’ know, mommy said we’d throw you a huge bash on your Gotchaday this year ifin we toned down your birthday. But, that doesn’t mean we’re gonna totally furget ‘bout your birthday.

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

Well fanky fank the cats. I’s was startin’ to think some of that mud mommy put on her hair had seeped into ya’ll’s brains.

Well Raena, you know why mommy was puttin’ that mud on her hair, don’cha?

          Uh…Not really sissy, no.

Dezi lays on scratcher with mouth openWe’re gonna have fun, fun, Fun!!!

(Dezi thinks back to the sight of mommy A with all that henna mud on her hair last night and how Raena kept tryin’ to dip her paw into the bowl and laughs.) Oh Raena, you know how vain mommy is. She wanted to cover up all her gray hairs, courtesy of none other than some sisfur who shall remain nameless, befur we went to meet furiends. Mommy’s been makin’ big plans fur us to meet some very special kitties and awnty Nora. She’s even planned fur us to spend a day at BlogPaws. All in celebration of your big day. It’s gonna be your very furst big road trip.

Well sissy, I’s know lots of peeps are talkin’ ‘bout this BlogPaws thingy, will I’s like it?

As much as you like to go out and meet peeps Raena, me’s sure you’re gonna like it. And let me tell ya’, there’s some pawsum swag that goes along with it. There’s no tellin’ what we’ll come home with. The year sis Lexi and me went, we brought home so many treats and noms and toys that the whole bed was covered in goodies. So, mommy says since it’s your birthday weekend you get furst choice of whatever you want from the swag bag. And, mommy plans on chattin’ it up with some of the brands to see ifin we can’t work out some quid pro quo with ‘em.

Quid pro quo? I’s didn’t know you meowed in Latin sissy. What ‘zactly does that mean anyways?

Uh, well, it just means we hope they’ll give us somethin’ that we can use and share with our furiends. And they get the honor of us meowin’ ‘bout it. After all, who could say no to our bootyful faces?

Hmmmmm That does sound like fun, sissy. I’s gettin’ really x’cited. I’s also wanna fanky fank awnty Vonda fur sendin’ me some birthday green papers. I’s haven’t picked out mine’s actual purresent yet, but I’s can’t wait to go shoppin’. Maybe I’s can go shoppin’ while we’re on our trip.

Maybe Raena. There’ll be purrlenty of time fur you to choose your gift. Mommy says cuz we’re gonna be travelin’ and away from home most of this week, we’re gonna take the week off.

Raena gets loving while laying in mommy A's lap-selfie

Not completely sissy. Mommy says that altho’ we won’t be writin’ blog posties till our next Blest Sunday, we will be keepin’ in touch every now and then thru our other social media sites. She also said ifin she can figger out how to work this smarty pants fone, we could actually do a couple of live videos from awnty Nora’s and the conference. That would mean we could actually meow with our furiends in real time.

Yep Raena, that sounds like fun too. Ifin you’re not already followin’ us on facebook, instagram or twitter, and would like to take pawrt in our trip, then be sure to click the follow button on our pages; just click the links above. You can also send us a furiend request on facebook: we’re Alexandra-Deztinee High.

We better wrap it up sissy and start packin’ our bags. This is quite a Blessing. Havin’ the oppurrtunity to meet up with furiends and spend time with them, is out of this world special fur us and one of our favorite things to do.

Dezi lays in mommy's lap getting love, selfie

You’re right Raena. Me fur sure wants to take the nip nanners, how ‘bout you?   As we do each week, we’d like to remind you all to take a minute today and every day to give Thanks fur the Blessings in your life. Big or small, we’re all Blest to have another day to give Fanks fur.

I’s fanky fankful fur mommy, our home, our fuiends, and the oppurrtunity to take this trip. We’re also linkin’ up with the Kitties Blue fur Sunday Selfies. We’ll see you all soon.

Last week, we meowed ‘bout Flea and Tick Prevention and we received a couple of follow up questions that we’re goin’ to address today. Remember, there’s no stupid/dumb question. And ifin you’re wonderin’ ‘bout somethin’, chances are others are wonderin’ the same thing. So, let’s get the business outta the way and get to it.

The followin’ post will be written in human English fur reader and translator ease. Our Service Cat posts aren’t intended to be an all inclusive Trainin’ Manual but rather Tips, Tricks and Techniques used/developed by mommy A thru her many years of animal trainin’, cats in purrticular. And to offur insight into your questions about Everything Feline. Always remember, Training is all ‘bout Repetition and Rewards.

As we mentioned last week, Flea and Tick Prevention is very important. Whether kitty ever puts a paw outside or not, we are at risk of being infected by some nasty parasites, including Fleas and Ticks. Did you know the Flea can jump up to 7 inches vertically and 13 inches horizontaly? That’s right, this little blood sucker, a 1/16 inch big can leap about 50 times their body length. (wikipedia-fleas) What that means, is that nobody/kitty/doggy/anipal is truly safe. Even if kitty only goes out on the porch and never touches the grass, he/she is still susceptible to Parasites. We mentioned last week that fleas can hitch a ride on just about anything including you in their attempt to find their next blood meal. So, Prevention is very important. It’s much easier to Prevent a problem than it is to wait and Treat the problem. We recommend speaking with your VET regarding Prevention Options.

Dezi and Raena on the Liberty cat tree looking outside

Now, we were asked, “Are there any natural Flea and Tick/Parasitic Preventatives you would recommend?” And, “What steps does mommy A take to keep us Protected?” One of the best Preventions is a Healthy Pet. That’s right, a healthy pet apparently isn’t nearly as tasty as an unhealthy one. Garlic and Brewer’s Yeast was once thought to be a repellant for Fleas, Ticks and Mosquitos. However, we have since learned that Garlic is actually toxic to cats and Brewer’s Yeast has no effect in the Treatment or Prevention of Fleas. Garlic can cause liver and kidney damage, so please don’t feed kitty/doggy any Garlic. Mommy says a good rule of thumb regarding the use of plant/oil/herb natural remedies is to stay away from items that may be toxic to anipals like bulb plants. A bulbous plant is one that grows a bulb underground instead of a tap root like Garlic, Onions, Lilies, etc.. If you choose to use essential oils or liquid herbs, please talk with your VET, do your own research to determine if it can be safely used on kitty.

 Catnip plant

Catnip’s a great Natural Flea Purrventative.

Now, let’s look at some plants you can grow yourself to help Prevent Fleas, Ticks and Mosquitos. Everybody knows the majority of kitties love their catnip. There are exceptions, but that shouldn’t deter you from growing a little nip to use for Flea Prevention. Along with catnip, most of the mint family safely repels Fleas and Mosquitos. Mommy makes certain to grow a few Nip plants, Sage, Rosemary, Basil, Thyme and Marigolds (annual that will seed like a perennial) in our garden each year. The best part is that these plants are perennials, so you really only have to plant them once and allow them to seed at the end of the season. They’ll come back year after year at just the right time to start repelling those nasty parasites. And, if kitty happens to roll around in them, he/she will get coated in a natural preventative. Don’t worry, these plants are pretty sturdy. Kitty won’t cause too much damage to their ability to grow and come back each year. There are essential oils for each of these plants, however, essential oils can be highly toxic to cats, so we recommend only using fresh leaves. It’s much cheaper anyways.

 herb garden clip art

Other than growing Nip in the garden to help repel parasites outside, how does one use it on kitty/doggy or even the humans you ask? Just harvest a few fresh leaves, crush them and rub directly onto kitty’s skin and fur. You can also make a natural Flea spray. Harvest a few leaves, and boil them in a half cup of water and half cup of vinegar/apple cider vinegar to make a “tea”. Boil for about 20 minutes, strain and let cool. Once your tea has cooled, it can be sprayed directly onto kitty. You could even use it to bathe kitty/doggy.

 Marigold Flower clip art

Another natural remedy some swear by is Diatomaceous Earth (DE). This can be applied to carpets. The sharp edges of DE will pierce the flea and larvae and dry them out. Before purchasing DE make sure it doesn’t contain any other ingredients. Companies often combine it with poisons such as Pyrethrums to make it more effective. While DE isn’t toxic on it’s own, it can be an irritant if inhaled. Be sure to thoroughly vacuum it up. Speaking of vacuums, one should vacuum regularly and empty the canister or bag immediately. Fleas can live off a host body for some time. Keep kitty’s/doggy’s bedding, blankeys, etc. clean by washing them regularly. Old school farmers used to apply Seven Dust to their animals as a Flea powder. We can’t speak to it’s effectiveness, but it smells like chemicals and toxins, so we don’t recommend it personally. However, it can be used safely outside around plants and windows.

 Dezi outside in walking harness

C’mon mommy, just let me roll ’round 1 time.

As we mentioned, we were asked what mommy does to Prevent Fleas. As we said last week, mommy hates using poison on us. However, she typically “fogs” our yard and around the windows with the Bengal outdoor fogger in late April, early May. We are generally not allowed to walk on the ground for at least a month afterwards. We’re never allowed to roll around on the ground. Mommy’s a bit of a germophobe. MOL  As we stated earlier, she has a small herb garden with plenty of Catnip, Sage and Marigolds. Believe it or not, she doesn’t really like the Marigold flowers, but she likes mosquitos even less. And lastly, we’re allowed to “waller”(wallow, roll) around in nip all year long…so long as it’s in the house. During the height of Flea/Tick/Mosquito season, we do use a spot on Flea Treatment. We live in the South where it never gets cold enough to kill off any of those nasty parasites and mommy isn’t taking any chances. Last week, we did say not to let cost of Prevention dictate the Treatments/Preventatives you use. While most commercial Flea Treatments/Preventatives contain a small percentage of poison, those made by Hartz Flea and Tick spot ons have been linked to many pet deaths. We highly suggest you stay away from their brand for this issue.

Chatting Cats: Smarty Pants Phones, Dumb Alarms & Bird TV

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. (Raena looks around. Seeing something flutter by the door she runs to the small perch to look out while meowing) Well sissy, we’ve furinally joined this century and got our very own smarty pants fone. Mommy said since it was gonna cost the same as what she pays fur a dumb fone we might as well get a smart one.

Dezi lays on scratcher, profile selfie

Was there any ketches Raena? You know humans luv to trick ya’ with things that sound too good to be true.

You’re right ‘bout that sissy. Seems there was one ketch, she had to pay some kind’a activation fee. The fone was furee and the service is the same as always, but they did want money to turn the thing on. Now ifin mommy can only learn to use it.

Dezi sits on cat tree looking at camera while Raena sits on small perch looking out the door

(Something flutters by the front door catching Dezi and Raena’s attention) What was that? Did you see that Raena? Mommy, there’s somethin’ on that silly alarm outside. (Dezi and Raena chatter wildly until mommy A gets up and looks outside. Seeing a bird’s nest on the alarm box on the wall outside the front door, mommy tells the girls that they were seeing the mommy bird taking care of her babies.) Really mommy? Do ya’ reckon it’s the same birdy from last year?

     I don’t know sweety, maybe.

Dezi lays on the liberty cat tree with Raena sitting on perch looking out the door

I’s wanna see the baby birds mommy. Will you hold me up there so I’s can see ‘em?

No Raena, I don’t think the momma bird would be too happy about that. You don’t want to scare her off so she leaves her babies alone, do you?

No, I’s guess not mommy. Ya’ know, our furiends might be wonderin’ just what kind of alarm box we’ve got out there. Since these ‘pawrtments are fur the disabled and elderly, they put a red light and a really noisy alarm on the wall right by the door. It’s s’posed to be fur emergencies. There’s a string in the bathroom and one in the bedroom that cause the alarm to go off when they’re pulled. The alarm isn’t actually connected to any kind’a emergency help, so all it does is go off, give everypawdy a migraine and start the busy bodies to gossipin’.

Dezi lays on the liberty cat tree looking outside while RAena poses on the small perch in front of door

Yep Raena, one of the furst Service Cat lessons we learn is not to play with the strings. Mommy says she doesn’t want all the nosy neighbors comin’ in our house. It’s not like any of them could actually help mommy. Befur you were born peeps alarms used to go off all the time. They’d be cleanin’ their pawrtments and pull the chain by accident. Mommy says that’s why they’re not attached to any emergency system. Ifin they were, the pawlice, fire depawrtment and ambulance would be here all the time fur false alarms.

Really sissy? I’s can only ‘member hearin’ one of those alarms since I’s been here. It fur sure was loud and annoyin’. I’s bet it would really scare that poor birdy up there.

Dezi lays atop the cat tree looking out

You’re purrobably right Raena. Let’s not find out, okay? Who knows, there might be lots more birdies with nests full of babies that we haven’t seen. We used to have a neighbor who put bird houses all over her patio. Once she moved, those birdies had nowhere to go anymore. Me bets they chose our purrch fur their nests cuz they knew we’re nice and won’t try to hurt ‘em or shoo ‘em off. Me can’t wait till the baby birdies start learnin’ to fly. Me ‘members those birdies from last year made quite a raucous when they left the nest.

You’re right ‘bout that, sissy. Fur such tiny creatures, they sure can make a lot of noise.

And they’re messy too Raena. They don’t seem to care where they poop. Ya’ gotta be careful or they just might poop on you. Dirty little critters. It’s no wonder the Trout Towne Tabbies don’t like birdies.

Raena lays atop Liberty Cat tree and hangs paw over edge

MOL That’s a good one sissy. All I’s can meow is that no birdy better poop on me. Ifin they try, we’ll be havin’ ‘em fur dinner.

Hmmmpht  Now that’s a good one Raena. Like you could actually ketch a birdy. MOL Me ‘members what you did the furst time you saw a rabbit. Our natural prey and you wanted to play with it.

Raena looks to the woods from the stroller

Oh sissy, he was so cute. Unfurtunately, he wasn’t the least bit innerested in playin’ with me. I’s never could figure out why? Anyways, we better wrap it up; we’ve got one of those inspections tomorrow, so mommy’s gotta do some cleanin’. Let’s go finish brekky and see how we can help.

Chatting Cats: Be The Change #BtC4A

Raena:  Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. Sissy, did you know this month is full of kitty holidays?

Dezi lays in wheelchair looking at camera

Dezi:   Is this a trick question Raena? Me knows your birthday is comin’ up. You meow ‘bout it all the time. What are we gonna do? Is me plannin’ a pawrty fur ya’? What…

Raena sleeps while hanging over the edge of the liberty cat tree

No, sissy, that’s not what I’s was meowin’ ‘bout. Altho’, I’s am x’cited ‘bout mine’s birthday and those are all good questions. You do the same thing befur your birthday. I’s ‘member you meowin’ ‘bout your birthday day and night. Anyways, I’s was actually meowin’ ‘bout the quarterly Blog for the Change (4/15), Pet Cat ID week (4/15 – 21), Hairball Awareness Day (4/27), Tabby Cat Day, Animal Cat Advocacy Day and Adopt a Shelter Cat Pet Day (4/30).

Me sees you tried to slip us kitties into all those days Raena. Ya’ know, there’s lots more anipals out there that need help. While we may be partial to kitties, we luv all anipals and don’t wanna see any anipal hurtin’ or bein’ mistreated.

Raena lays atop the Liberty cat tree

You’re right sissy. All anipals deserve to be treated with respect, even those we eat. I’s saw on the teevee where some farmers really mistreat the animals in their care. There’s chickens out there purr-actically livin’ on top of each other. And ducks bein’ force fed just so their livers will swell up to make one of those hoity toity dishes (Foie gras) some humans like to eat. And cows livin’ so close together, they can’t even move. I’s just don’t unnerstand it. Sure, we like meat. Actually, as kitty cats, we can’t survive without meat, but that doesn’t mean we want our dinner to be abused or mistreated.

Dezi lays on scratcher with mouth open

So true Raena. Mommy says there are some good farmers out there, but we wish they could all be good. God meant fur man to take care of the animals He put on this earth. And, He meant fur some animals to be food fur others, but me thinks it makes God really sad when He sees how some of His creations are treated. The laws that govern animals are rarely enforced. But, they’re also not really sufficient fur purrtectin’ animals. Mommy says the law calls us propurrty. Can you ‘magine that? We’re mommy’s propurrty?

Raena stands on scratcher with paw lifted

Yeah sissy, I’s don’t think mommy sees us that way tho’. Unfurtunately, lots of peeps do. That’s why they don’t take very good care of the animals. Mommy says we live in a disposable world, where peeps no longer take care of their things. Ifin somethin’ breaks, or they get tired of it, they just throw it out and get somethin’ new. It’s cuz of that way of thinkin’ that shelters and rescues are almost always filled to capacity and so many animals die each day.

Dezi sitting on scratcher close up, selfie

So, what can we as a society do to change the way farmers treat the animals in their care you ask? Well, look fur labels that tell you that piece of meat was raised and treated humanely all the way to slaughter. Support laws that call fur humane treatment and slaughter of such animals. Write your local government officials and insist they introduce or support such legislation.

Humane food Labels

Humane Food Labels

Raena scratches ear while sitting on cat scratcher

As fur all the anipals in shelters and rescues, consider adoptin’ ‘stead of buyin’. And ‘member, when you adopt that sweet kitty or doggy, they’re yours fur life, not just while they’re cute or convenient. Mommy’s always said, “You can’t take your two legged child back when they misbehave, so you shouldn’t take your furry child back either.” We rely on you fur food, shelter and luvs. In return we offur unconditional luvs and devotion. Purrlease don’t give up on us. Unlike that human child, when we act out, there’s usually a very good reason, offen a medical reason. Purrlease, luvs us and give us the care you’d want given to yourself. You may not be able to Be the Change fur every animal on the planet, but you can Be the Change fur some. Whether, you volunteer, donate, lobby fur law changes, or just be the bestest mommy or daddy to the animals in your care, what you do can make a difference.

Dezi lays on scratcher and licks paw

Those are great suggestions Raena. Shelters and rescues are always in need of volunteers and supplies. You can make a difference.

Raena lays atop Liberty Cat tree and hangs paw over edge

I’s like that idea sissy. We don’t have much, but we always try to help out when we can. We wanna Be a pawrt of the Change in the way animals are treated. C’mon sissy, let’s go see what we can find to donate to those kitties less furtunate than us.
