An Educational Blest Sunday

Meowllo everypawdy, and a Blest Sunday to ya’. Me will stawt by sayin’ mommy is feelin’ better. Lexi and me took turns givin’ hers head massages last night. Picture it, all 3 of us on one standawd size pillow. Lexi and me kinda hang off of it a bit, but there’s purrlenty of mattwess fur ow back ends. Anyways hopefully we will get caught up soon wiff all ow visits. Now, me wanted to share anudder of meez educational posties wiff you today. You might be wunnewin’ what it has to do wiff a Blest Sunday. Well me will tell you. Mommy cares enuff to get me and sis Lexi spayed. And dat helps purrtect us against sum of da pawful diseases un-altered animals awe at risk fur, such as Pyometra. Member dat email me told you bout dat caused meez last educational posty? Well this wuz in it too, and unfurtunately weez lost furiends to this disease, so me wanted to help spwead da word today ‘bout purrventin’ it.

Pyometra is an infection of the uterus that can be deadly to us kitties and you doggies. It occurs most offen in kitties and udder anipals as they get older and stay unaltered. It usually occurs shortly after a heat cycle where too much progesterone or a sensitivity to progesterone happens. Cysts form in the uterus and bacteria enters thru the cervix and causes the white blood cells and additional fluid to flood in to the rescue. This causes a swelling. And as the disease continues to fester and grow it moves along from the uterus to the vagina where the excess fluid (pus) spills out. In an attempt to self clean we kitties begin to “clean” lick. Eventually the cervix will close off trapping the excess fluids in the uterus. Our bodies continue to send these fluids and white blood cells to the uterus which causes it to become even more enlarged and can possibly rupture spilling out all those toxins into our body. If this happens, death usually occurs within 48 hours.

Symptoms of this horrific disease include a pussy discharge from the vulva. The abdomen may appear enlarged, and the cat may vomit, not eat, and/or become lethargic. Dogs may also drink excessively and urinate large amounts. Blood work will show a high white blood cell count and possibly slight anemia.  Since this disease can become fatal quickly it is important that it be diagnosed and treated immediately.

 pyometrapyometra2

The treatment for this is a complete spay. Which itself can be a challenge. The surgeon must be careful not to puncture the inflamed and enlarged uterus to avoid spilling all those toxins into the abdomen which would have fatal consequences. The best way to prevent this disease from happening in the first place is to spay your cat or dog around the age of 6 months. At this age the animal is old enough to withstand surgery and still young enough to have not had their first heat which can also cause problems we’ll cover in future posts. There are other options for treating this disease if you’re a reputable breeder and just have to keep your queen, and you can read more about that here. But really, less breeding would lead to more adopting.

 Why spay-neuter

Even in this day and age when we know so much more ‘bout da diseases dat occur in anipals, there awe those hoo still wanna make excuses fur not spaying or neutering. The one mommy hates da most is, “I want my children to see the joy of birth.” Purrlease…rent a video, watch da animal planet or da discovery channel, or one of da many udder purrogwams dat feature such “joys”. Cuz you awe da irresponsible ones dat also help fill da shelters wiff unwanted animals. Just because you fink you hav homes fur all those babies born, what ‘bout da homes yous givin’ ‘em too? So member, spay and neuter yous pets and adopt. We awe so fankfull to hav so many pawsum furiends hoo put their pets healff ahead of spweadin’ da gawjusness too. We fank you and know yous anipals fank you too.

 0dw Lexi laying

Mommy had to wait to get sis Lexi spayed till hers wuz almost 8 mumffs old cuz hers wuz too small and needed to gain weight. But in those 15 years, many advancements hav been made and alterations can be safely purrfurmed as long as da animal weighs 2 pounds or more. Yes, yous cat/dog is gawjus and wuld make bootyful babies. But, there’s purrlenty of bootyful babies alweady in da world needin’ homes. We hate it when we lose furiends to sumfin’ dat kulda been purrvented. And we awe twuly blest to hav a mommy dat believes ow healff is more impurrtant than spweadin’ wound ow good looks and sweet genes.

Will You Join?

Meowllo everpawdy, happy Furiday!!! Da weekend is here. Do yous hav plans? It’s warmed up a bit fur us and da sunpuddles awe out and weez enjoyin’ every minute of it. Mommy sez she has da mudder of all migwaines but she’s still gunna twy to take Lexi and me fur a stwoll this weekend. See she has these migwaines all da time, but sumtimes they build up and get weally bad, and she’s been fightin’ this one all week and hopin’ it wuldn’t bawge on da scene, but it did. It hit full furce yesfurday. Anyways, we wusn’t gunna post today cuz of it, but when checkin’ ow emails we came acwoss sumfin’ dat we fawt needed to be shared. Now lots of you purrawlly got da same email, after all weez all animal luvvers and purrawlly get a lot of da same mails. But just in case yous didn’t and fur those dat don’t get emails fwum da ASPCA we ‘cided to post.

As you know we got into social media cuz da ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act-Department) changed da definition of a Service Animal and we wanted to bwing light and educate peeps dat dogs awen’t da only Service Animals out there. And while da ADA has yet to follow any of ow accounts or change da definition back, we hav succeeded in educatin’ lots of peeps. So we do see dat as a win. Altho’ there awe many injustices wiff wegards to anipals dat go on everyday much worse than ow plight. Laws need to be changed and stiffer penalties fur those dat abuse, neglect, and abandon anipals. Da study of Psychology sez dat murderers offen stawt out when they’re childwen by abusin’ animals. And even as purrgwessive as we awe today and as faw as weez come as a society, animals awe still seen as fwo away purr-opurrty. (not by everpawdy, but by a lot).

There awe still aweas of this world dat hav dog fights, cock fights, indiscwiminate bweedin’, and so much more. How do we change this? What can we do ‘bout it? We all fink weez just one voice wiff no power. But when we band togedder weez lot of voices and weez be roarin’ loud and purroud fur da welfare of animals everywhere. Alone we might not make a diffewence, but togedder we can’t be stopped. Da ASPCA has put togedder a list of fings you can do fwu social media to help change da wongs dun to animals. First, follow da lawmakers in yous awea on their social media pages, they’ve all got ’em. And when yous hav a cause dat needs addwessin’, post it to their Facebook page, tweet it to them, email them. And get udders to do da same. They sure don’t mind buggin’ you when they want elected or munny. While they might not be checkin’ their pages themselves, in this day and age, there is sumpawdy on their staff moniterin’ it. And enuff voices can cause a change.

We Want You

Meowllo everypawdy, it’s almost da weekend again. And dat means sum good news fur us. (paws cwossed) It’s posed to be in da low 50’s. Dat ain’t what we call warm…but at least it’s above fureezin’. Well anyways, on to today’s posty which be ‘bout bein’ da change fur da anipals of da world, or at least yous awea of it. You know there be so much yous can do to make a diffewence in da lives of da animals in da shelters. You can donate munny, items fwum their wish list. Twust me all shelters hav a wish list. They’re always in  need of food and litter and blankeys, and all kinds of udder supplies. But what ifin yous like us and don’t hav no munny to giv or fings to donate? Dat’s okay too. Yous can giv of yous selff and yous time. Fink ‘bout volunteerin’. Again, shelters awe always in need. Cages need to be cleaned and anipals need to be fed and socialized. You know what? Ifin you live sumwwhere dat dusn’t allow you to hav pets (we can’t magine why), volunteerin’ kuld just be yous answer. You kuld go and play wiff da anipals and luv on them and giv them tweats and all just like they belong to you. And hopefully all yous helpin’ ‘em out will get them furever homes even quicker. Fur sure it’d make their stay a little bwighter.

And then there’s always da stway and ferals. Ifin you hav any in yous neighborhood you can make sure they be altered so there’s no more unwanted litters. You know TNR. And of course they always need food and shelter. And we just posted sum weally cheap ways to make a shelter out of a cawdboard box. And you can get those fur da furee fwum local gwocers ifin yous not hav any hangin’ wound. And purrlease member, they be skeered not mean, so they kuld also use a luvvin’ and carin’ voice.

 BlogtheChange

As fur us, now dat last year is behind us and we fur sure awe hopin’ all da bads be over, mommy plans to go back to hers volunteer work. Altho’ headin’ off duwin’ this cold snap isn’t weally hers idea of havin’ fun. We hope da wedder clears up soon. We hope you enjoy ow cutesy cover fotos, and lets all band togedder to make this year da best year fur change. It’s fur da anipals. Everypawdy can do sumfin’, no matter yous financial status, yous ability or disability, or anyfin’ else. We, da anipals want you.

 0dw Dezi on cat tree

Last night right at dinner time there was a knock on our door. Our neighbor, mr. W. said that Buddy was loose and needed mommy to help get him back in the house. A new physical therapist had been at mr. W’s house and when he left Buddy darted out after a rabbit he had been watchin’ through the window. And before he knew it he had followed te rabbit out into the woods behind our complex. Now he found himself alone and lost. Yes, mommy put on her Eskimo garb and went out to help get him back home. It was already dark so mommy stood at the edge of the woods and hollered for him. She finally heard him rustlin’ the leaves and headed toward her voice. See Buddy’s been a little skeered lately cause mr. W’s been very sick, and even spent some time in the hospital. Buddy’s 5 years old and has been with mr. W since he was about 6 months old. He doesn’t really know any other life. So if something was to happen to mr. W and he could no longer care for Buddy, what do you suppose would happen to him?.

This is a foto of Buddy in hims home bein' a good boy.

And everyday we read posts somewhere in the internet about some cat ending up in a shelter or rescue because their people could no longer care for them. We think it’s heartbreaking, but even more so when that kitty is older and has spent it’s life living in one home only to find itself behind bars in a shelter somewhere. And it’s not just cats, it’s all pets that are in danger of this happening to them. In this day and age, we just don’t understand why this happens. people can take the time to write a will leaving their earthly belongings to some family member or friend or charity, but they can’t take the time to ensure that the living, breathing, being who has shared their lives and given them love has a place to go to also.

 dw Lexi checking out toys

Please don’t assume your children or some other family member is going to come in and take your beloved pet. More often than not your family members are heading straight for the local shelter.  Since we are cats, we will focus on cats, but there are lots of places that you can contact regarding your particular pet. Click here for a list of some of those places. Your cat has given you years of happiness and love, don’t abandon them when it’s your time. Make arrangements and put them in writing. Let someone else know your wishes. None of us are promised a tomorrow. Anything can happen at any time. So the sooner you get the arrangements made the better. You can always change it, but after you’re gone it’s too late.
