Service Cats: Why Cats Shouldn’t Eat Grains And Vegetables

Pet Food Ingredients Pt. 2

MeOW  Welcome to another installment of Service Cats and Everything Feline on Furidays. We return today to our mini-series on Pet Food ingredients. It is our intention to present this in a way that everyone can understand it and to reveal the lies and misinformation pet pawrents are being “fed” by the pet food/feed industry, including the AAFCO. We intend to list as many ingredients as possible so that you will be better equipped to read labels and make the best choice fur your pets. It’s a shame that this topic has been so confusing fur so long. We hope to be able to shed a little light on all that confusion. Please remember, not all foods/feeds will contain every ingredient we will be listing. Ifin you’ve missed any of the posts in our Service Cat series, you can find them on our Training Tips and Everything Feline page. And remember to submit your questions and topic suggestions in the comments below or by sendin’ us an email via our Contact page.

The following post will be written in human English for reader and translator ease. Our Service Cat posts aren’t intended to be an all inclusive Training Manual but rather Tips, Tricks and Techniques used/developed by mommy A thru her many years of animal training, cats in purr-ticular. And to offer insight into your questions about Everything Feline. Always remember, successful Training is all about Repetition and Rewards.

Raena sits and poses in her new tiger harness

Our first post in this mini-series talked about a cat’s need for Protein. Cats are Obligate Carnivores/True Carnivores (Those whose survival depends on nutrients which are found only in animal flesh and organs/meat protein. While Obligate Carnivores may be able to ingest small amounts of plant matter, due to their evolution they lack the necessary physiology required to digest and use the nutrients in that plant matter.) We’re going to try to break down a little science for you now. Digestion requires enzymes created by the body:

  • Protease: Necessary to break down Proteins

  • Lipase: Necessary to digest Fat

  • Amylase: Necessary to process Carbohydrates (Usually found in the saliva and pancreas)

Dezi and Raena eat out of their new dishesDid you know your food is already bein’ digested, Raena?

Digestion:

Digestion starts in the mouth with enzymes created by saliva (spit). However, cat and dog saliva lack the enzyme Amylase; it’s only found in their pancreas. That means the pancreas has to work overtime to process Carbohydrates present in most commercial pet foods/feeds. There is some evidence that points to this as being part of the cause for pancreatitis, diabetes, obesity and other chronic illnesses in cats. Humans and other mammals have flat top teeth meant for chewing. Cats however, have sharp fangs meant for ripping and tearing flesh. That’s a crude way to look at it, but think about it; when was the last time you saw kitty gnawing on a cob of corn? Everything about a cat says it’s meant to hunt, catch and rip it’s prey to shreds. And yet, most pet food companies lace their foods with corn, peas and carrots. I had a garden a few years back; and let me tell you, it wasn’t the neighborhood cats digging up my carrots and eating them.

We mentioned in our earlier post that cats do much better when they don’t have food available all the time. Grains and veggies are ideal for grazing animals such as cows, goats, etc., but typically when a cat eats grass, it’s followed by hurling/horking/vomiting or whatever you want to call it. Cats were never meant to graze or eat veggies. But, what about the vitamins and nutrients those vegetables could offer? First of all, they’re often cooked so long they no longer contain any of the nutrients originally present. The reality is that a cat’s natural prey animal, the herbivore, provides those nutrients in the form of previously eaten and digested grains and vegetables. While it sounds really gross to us humans, a cat in the wild would consume the whole animal (excluding bones, fur, feathers, beaks, eyes, hooves), including it’s stomach and the contents therein.

Corn with mycotoxin

Mycotoxins:

Let’s talk a minute about Grains and their toxicity. Mycotoxins are mold and a huge concern often found in foods like corn, corn meal, peas, millet, nuts, and other grains and types of food. There are 3 main mycotoxins that the FDA has established rules for the following 3, but they are not the only mycotoxins of concern:

  • Aflatoxins:

  • Fumonosin:

  • Deoxynivalenol

Mycotoxins can cause lethargy, anorexia, jaundice, intravascular coagulation, liver damage, weight loss, dehydration, renal and hepatic damage, gastrointestinal dysfunction and death.

Ingredients:

Most pet food/feed is formulated without oversight by the FDA or even the AAFCO. The laws that are supposed to protect our pets are often ignored, broken, unenforced or completely non existent. Don’t be fooled by “voluntary” recalls. Those recalls are an “after the fact” and often the result of an animal getting sick or dying due to something in their food. Let’s look at some of the ingredients found in pet foods.

  • Wheat: One of the top allergens in pet food, may contain mycotoxins, can contribute to canine obesity

  • Corn: Totally useless. As discussed above, neither cats or dogs have the ability to process it and covert it to useable energy in it’s raw state, and it has no nutrients after being cooked at high temps. May contain mycotoxins

  • Corn Gluten Meal: Even worse than corn. Patented as a weed killer in 1991. May include mycotoxins

  • By-Product-Meal: Bones, blood, intestines, lungs, ligaments, heads, feathers, beaks, feet, hooves, etc.. Can be anything left over from processing, Not fit for human consumption. Most of these are things a cat or dog in the wild wouldn’t eat.

  • Soy: Considered a Protein. However it’s totally useless for the obligate carnivore and can cause allergies and cancer

  • Brewers Rice: Broken rice shells containing no nutrients

  • Egg Product: Eggshells (not easily digestible), may contain rancid or spoiled eggs not fit for human consumption, may contain salmonella,

  • Sugar: Completely useless addition of empty calories. Cats can’t even taste sweet things

  • Peas/Pea Fiber/Pea Meal/Legumes/Lentils: May contain mycotoxins, may cause heart disease

  • Potatoes: May cause heart disease

  • Cellulose: Sawdust, floor sweepings, totally useless

  • Carrots: Hard for cats to digest, no useable nutrients after cooking at high temps.

  • Cracked Barley: Grain, may contain mycotoxins

  • Garlic/Garlic Oil/Garlic Extract/Garlic Powder: Toxic to cats especially

  • Oats/Oat Bran/Oat Meal/Oat Groat: Grain, may contain mycotoxins

  • Chicken Meal/Fish Meal/Lamb Meal/Beef Meal: All Meals are the leftovers after processing and Not fit for human consumption. May contain parts from animals killed by means other than slaughter, such as road kill, illness, poisoning, natural disaster deaths (such as drowning), phenobarbital, culling, etc.

  • White Fish/Ocean Whitefish: May be any number of fish

  • Cranberries: Typically not enough present to have actual health benefits

  • Whey: Milk protein, used in lower grade foods, possible allergen, especially for cats

  • Whole Eggs: Contains the shells which are not easily digestible

  • Celery: Unnecessary, not easily digestible

  • Lamb: Lamb meat is filled with water and therefore not as high in protein as other meats

  • Beef: Natural source of Glucosamine (will define and expound on in future post) High in “water weight” (will expound in future post)

  • Spinach: Unnecessary, not easily digested

  • Basil: Member of the mint family, safe but unnecessary

  • Blueberries: Not enough present to be beneficial, unnecessary

  • Veal: Alternative to beef

  • Beef Liver: Natural source of iron and flavor. However, in large quantities can be toxic. Best as a secondary ingredient

  • Soybeans/Soybean Meal: Can NOT be digested by dogs and can cause bloating and death

  • Soybean Oil: Source of fat and good for coat, safe for dogs and cats

  • Ginger: Aids in digestion if listed high on label

  • Carrot Powder: Cheap source of fiber

  • Ground Flax Seed: May be lacking in fatty acids

  • Sunflower Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols <expounded on in future post>): Cheap source of fat

  • Sweet Potatoes/Yams: Alternative to regular potatoes

  • Green Tea: Not enough to have any health benefits unless listed in the top 5 ingredients

  • Wild Rice: Good alternative to white rice

  • Dried Kelp: Accepted industry source of iodine

  • Egg Noodles: Unnecessary, source or carbohydrates

  • Rabbit: Great alternative Meat/protein source

  • Duck: Great alternative meat/protein source, Less water weight than chicken

  • Shrimp: Source of protein

  • Cod: Alternative source of protein

  • Catfish: Alternative source of protein and fatty acids

  • Venison Meal: Alternative source of protein, in concentrated form, more protein availability than standard meats

Raena bathes atop the liberty cat tree

I realize this is a lot of information, but we haven’t even scratched the surface, so to speak. Most herbs listed on labels and found in pet food are useless and should be left out. There’s a lot of “gimmicky” ingredients these days and gimmicky names to boot. When shopping for our pet’s food, we need to remember to pay no attention to the photos on the packaging, as they’re not a true representation of what’s actually inside. Dry kibble is worse than canned or wet food in most respects since any natural nutrients have been cooked out of their original sources. But, this mini-series isn’t about making you choose one type of food or even one food over another. It’s merely to help you be better equipped at understanding what you’re buying and feeding your furry family member. We will be defining and explaining more of the terminology and ingredients in future posts, so if you have specific questions, please let us know. I’m going to turn it back over to Dezi to close us out.

Fanks mommy. Lots of big words and stuff us kitties don’t unnerstand ‘bout what goes on our plates. Anyways, remember, you can ketch up on any post you may have missed by clickin’ Training Tips and Everything Feline. We got a lot of great questions after Pt. 1 of Pet Food Ingredients, so if you have any just let us know in the comments below or send us an email. We purromiss, we will be answering them all. This is a huge topic and we’d rather take our time and cover it properly than to mislead you further. Other than the sources listed below, mommy also used her common sense, past experience as a V-E-T tech and information she got from some local V-E-Ts via chat.

Chatting Cats: Playful Planning Banter

Hey everypawdy, it’s me, RaenaBelle. I’s know it ain’t Blest Sunday yet, but I’s sure do wanna fanky fank all of you fur your luvs and suppurrt. Ya’ know, it really warms this little kitty girls’ heart to have so many peeps care ‘bout me. Mommy was talkin’ to her counselor the other day ‘bout mine’s humble beginnings and how I’s had known nuffin’ but a stinky old cage till she came along and bailed me out. I’s don’t really like to think ‘bout all that anymore, cuz I’s livin’ the good life now. I’s got a luvvin’ mommy and the bestest big sisfur ever. Ya’ know, she’s been so nice to me lately, I’s started wonderin’ ifin somethin’ was up. Ya’ know, like ifin she was tryin’ to sell me off on the kittycats list or trade me in fur another model.

Dezi and Raena lay on cat tree looking out door

RaenaBelle Mayce!!! Don’t be tellin’ peeps me’s tryin’ to get rid of you. You know that ain’t true. (Dezi mumbles under her breath) Besides, mommy would never let it happen.

I’s didn’t say you did it sissy, just that I’s worried you might. You never let me jump on you without hissin’, till the other day. So, you can see why I’s might think somethin’ was up…Right?

Dezi and RAena lay on cat tree and Dezi looks out door

No, me’s been nice to you befur. Me’s always nice. Anyways, let’s meow ‘bout somethin’ else. Me’s so ready to see mr. Sunshine again, how ‘bout you?

Yeah sissy, I’s getting’ tired of all the gray. Altho’ I’s did see a few squirrels the other day. Mommy says they’re gatherin’ up their winter supply of nuts. I’s say, ifin they’d just come a little closer, they wouldn’t have to worry ‘bout winter, they’d be on our plates fur dinner. MOL

Dezi looks out door from cat tree while Raena lays under her

Like mommy would ever let that happen Raena. Mommy won’t let us walk ‘round on the dirty ground. She fur sure ain’t lettin’ us get all dirty killin’ some squirrel. Hmmmpht  Can you ‘magine the bath we’d get after somethin’ like that?

Oooooh Maybe we could have a bubble bath sissy. I’s saw that on tv the other night and it looked like so much fun. Bubbles were everywhere and the peeps were slippin’ and slidin’ all over the place. You know how much I’s luvs a good slide.

Dezi lays on the cat tree

Yeah Raena, we all know how much you like to slide everywhere. Me thinks it’s only second to your tv watchin’. Me’s never known a kitty that liked to watch the boob tube as much as you.

You can learn so much from tv sissy.

Dezi wipes eyes atop cat tree Oh Me. That girl and her tv.

Yeah, me isn’t so sure those are the kinds of things you wanna learn.

Dezi's Venetian Carnival Birthday party invite

Well sissy, ifin I’s hadn’t been watchin’ tv I’s wouldn’t know how to throw you a pawsum birthday/gotchaday pawrty. I’s so x’cited I’s can’t hardly wait.

Me too Raena. It is me’s pawrty. Hey, what band did you get to play at the pawrty?

It’s a surpurrise sissy. Ifin I’s told ya’ everythin’, it wouldn’t be as much fun. Don’t worry, you’re gonna luv ‘em. (Raena runs to the computer and posts an ad) I’s got everythin’ unner control.

Band Ad for Dezi's party

Okay Raena, me’s puttin’ a lot of trust in ya’, don’t let me down.

I’s tellin’ ya’ sissy, don’t worry, I’s got this. Right now tho’, I’s could use a little nap, how ‘bout you?

Sounds good to me, Raena. Me can have sweet dreams of me’s upcomin’ pawrty.

Tell All Tuesday: Piddle Pads And Cat Diapers, Oh My

Raena:  Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. Can anypawdy hear me over all these thunder boomers? Mommy, I’s don’t think anypawdy can hear me. (Raena looks around from her perch at the door and sees mommy taking photos of a very displeased Dezi.)  Sissy!!! What in the world are you wearin’ sissy?

Dezi layd in chair with diaper

Dezi:  Nuffin!!! Me ain’t wearin’ nuffin’ but me’s furs Raena!!! Mommy get this thing off me, right now!!! Can’t you see it doesn’t fit? Me has too much tail floof. Besides, what self respectin’ kitty belle would wear such a thing? Me doesn’t care that it would be helpful. Me wishes you had known ‘bout it when sis Lexi was sick too. She would’a fur sure told you where to put it. Me can hear her now. The hissin’ and screamin’…it would’a been epic. What’s that? You think she would’a worn this, just cuz you asked her too? Well, guess we’ll never know. Me can tell ya’ that me will have to be one sick kitty befur you ever come near me with that thing again. Hmmmmpht

Pet Parents Brand cat diapers

Sissy, you shouldn’t meow at mommy like that. (Raena sees mommy A heading her way with the diaper and runs.) Don’t you dare mommy!!! I’s a good girl. I’s use the pawtty box every single time. And I’s always try to make it to a piddle pad befur I’s hurl any hairballs. Meowin’ of, I’s know you’re happy that the new Washable Piddle Pads don’t move ‘round all over the floor, but I’s want mine’s slide back. What happened to the cheap plastic ones?

Dezi sniffs diapers

Well Raena, since you like to use them as slides, they don’t stay put and sometimes get all torn up. Mommy says they won’t absorb much if the piddle absorbing middle is shredded. So, when the peeps at the Pet Parent Brand reached out and offured to send us a couple of washable ones, mommy jumped on it. Me’s not sure why she thought we needed the diapers too tho’. Me’s not wearin’ those, they pinched me’s tail.

Raena sits pretty in the hallwayYou can see how much nicer the Washable piddle pad I’s sittin’ on looks.

You do have a lotta fluff back there sissy. Mommy said she had to order by waist size and not tail floof. Anyways, they may come in handy someday. You know, you’re no spring kitty anymore.

HiSssssssss  Watch it Raena, me’s still got it. Me ain’t that old. Anyways, the Piddle Pads and even the diapers are really well made. Mommy said she was really impurressed by them. They’re sturdy, nice and thick, very absorbent and washable. And mommy says they wash up really well too. No shrinkage or bleeding of colors.

Dezi lays on piddle pad in wheelchair

We received the cat diapers and washable piddle pads in exchange for our honest opinion. As always, we tell it like we see it. We only bring products we use or have tried and feel would be of interest to you, our readers and friends.

Raena lays atop the liberty cat tree with arm outstretched

They’re nice and soft too, sissy. They’re waterproof, leakproof and they have a Sticky Paw backin’ that keeps them from slidin’ ‘round. They look nice and come in a 2 pack with one gray and one natural, so whether you’re puttin’ ‘em on the floor or the furniture, they look really nice. They also come in a variety of sizes and sell fur $17.00 – $37.00. We give ‘em 4 paws up each and mommy gives ‘em 2 thumbs up. The diapers come in both kitty and doggy form and a variety of colors. Check their website for sizing and color options. The peeps at Pet Parents are lettin’ us give a set Piddle Pads away to one U.S. resident. Blest Sunday: Dezi Held Her Ground

MeOW MeOW (Dezi runs through the house mewing and swishing her tail as the storms outside rage)  Look, mommy, me’s not hidin’!!! C’mon RaenaBelle, let’s eat dinner; it looks so yummy. Then maybe we can play. (Suddenly there’s a clap of thunder that shakes the walls. Dezi looks up from her dinner plate with concern, as Raena runs up the cat tree and back down again. Dezi looks over at mommy A who smiles and says it’s okay. Dezi walks over to mommy A for a little love and pets and returns to eating her dinner.

Raena lays atop the liberty cat tree with arm outstretched

I’s really purroud of you sissy. It’s stormin’ like crazy out there and here you are, actin’ like it’s just another day. I’s been tryin’ to tell ya’ that the storms can’t hurt you and now you can see it fur yourself. Wanna play?

Hmmmmpht  Me saw your eyes get bigger than saucers a few times too Raena. Miss ain’t afraid of anythin’ looked a little scared just a few minutes ago.

I’s wasn’t scared sissy. But, that thunder boomer sure was loud. I’s don’t think I’s ever heard one quite that loud befur. (Suddenly there’s another loud clap of thunder and the lights flicker. Dezi and Raena look at each other and then over to mommy A who sits calmly smiling at them. And then another clap and the lights flicker off. There’s a pop from down the hall and then the lights come back on. Mommy A gets up to reset the breaker that got switched. Raena runs after her.) Wait mommy, I’s wanna be right beside ya’. I’s can purrtect ya’ ifin the lights go out again. You know we kitties see really good in the dark; much better than you.

Dezi gets loving while laying in mommy's lap

What a kiss up you are Raena. Kittens, it’s not like the lights were out fur hours. Besides, what do you think all these candles sittin’ ‘round the house are fur?

Well sissy, I’s always kind’a wondered what they did? I’s mean, they do smell nice, but I’s sure didn’t know they put off light.

Yeah, me’s only seen them a few times me’s self. Mommy used to burn them more, but she says the good ones costs lots of green papers so she’s savin’ ‘em fur special occasions. And of course to find the pawtty box room ifin the ‘lectricity be out. Unlike us, she can’t find her way ‘round with her nose. MOL

Raena lays on the liberty cat tree

You are a funny one sissy. In any case, I’s just happy that we’re all together and safe and that you didn’t run UTB at the fust sound of storms. I’s know that makes mommy happy too. I’s even heard her fanky fankin’ God fur blessin’ her with such amazinly pawsum babies.

Me heard her too Raena. Mommy’s always givin’ fanks fur how Blest she is and how much of a Blessin’ we are fur her. Sometimes, me thinks she’s got it all wrong. We’re the Blest ones. Only God knows what our fates would’a been ifin He hadn’t sent mommy to us. While we’re meowin’ ‘bout our Blessings, me would like to meow that every kitty who crosses paths with a rescuer is a Blest kitty indeed. You rescuers and tenders of ferals are just as Blest as the kitties you tend. We know some of those kitties may never let you close enuff to even touch them, but we know they luv you and they know they owe their lives to your kindness and luv.

Raena lays atop cat tree with arm outstretched

That’s so true sissy. And, with all the stormin’ goin’ on, we should count our Blessings now. Mommy says it may be days befur these pass over so we gotta make the most of any lull. I’s wanna make sure that we get the word out and invite all our furiends fur your Birthday pawrty. We are Blest to have so many wonderful furiends and it just wouldn’t be a purr-opurr celebration without all of them. As most everypawdy knows, your Birthday is on November the 1st and your Gotchaday was just a couple weeks later, so I’s plannin’ a mid month pawrty. We’ll keep everypawdy updated as the plans get squared away.

Dezi gets love while laying in mommy's lap

Y, Fank you Raena. You’re right, it wouldn’t be the same without all our furiends there to celelbrate with me. We better wrap this up so you can get back to plannin’. As we do each week, we’d like to remind you all to take a minute today and every day to Give Thanks fur the Blessings in your lives. And we’d like to fank you all fur bein’ Blessings in ours. And, me’s gonna beat Raena to it today, we’re joinin’ the Kitties Blue fur Sunday Selfies

Don’t furget, there’s still time to enter the give away here fur Prancie’s Prayer.

You’ve always gotta have the last word don’t ya’ Raena?

Do you think we should have a theme party?

If so, what theme would you like to join?

Or, do you have another brilliant idea for Dezi’s party?
