Chatting Cats: Breaking Mews And Updates

Raena: Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. Storms, storms go away and don’t come back any day.

Dezi lays on tissue paper in front of fireplace

Dezi: Uh Raena, me doesn’t think you’ve got that sayin’ right?. Not that it matters, just meowin’ somethin’ isn’t gonna make it happen.

Raena lays atop the Liberty cat tree

Are you sure sissy? Mommy says the Bible says “ask and you shall receive.” (Mt. 7:7)

Oh Raena, (Dezi shakes her head) furst, you’re paraphrasin’ that scripture. But, more ‘purrtantly, that’s not what it means. And, since ya’ paraphrased it, you missed the most ‘purrtant pawrt, ‘bout askin’ in Jesus name. But really it means spiritual things and really ‘purrtant stuffs, like healin’ and things. While me might not care fur the storms any more than you do, they’re typical in the area we live. And, while it might mean we don’t get to go fur strolls, the ground and farmers who farm the land, really need the rain. Summer’s comin’ and you’ll be complainin’ ‘bout the heat in no time. Besides, you got to get out yesfurday with mommy and go to the dentist.

Raena sits pretty on the floor

I’s did sissy, but that wasn’t any fun. Mommy furgot to put a towel down in the new stroller and I’s got all wet. Fanky fankfully, she had some paper towels in the car so she was able to dry us both off. And as usual, the nasty peeps at Aspen Dental did mommy dirty again. It’s a real shame, cuz we had just met a new dental assistant that mommy really liked. He’s ex military and really nice. Mommy says she really ‘purreciated how nice and respectful he is.

Dezi sleeps on brown tree in front of window

Wish me could have met him. Did ya’ll make sure to fank him fur his service Raena?

Of course we did, sissy. We never miss an oppurrtunity to fanky fank those who serve our Country and fight to keep us safe. I’s thought he might cry when he told mommy the office manager said they didn’t want mommy to come back and they weren’t gonna make her lower denture. He said they were tired of mommy wantin’ them to do things right and to make mommy’s denture look good and fit propurrly.

Dezi sleeps on the tissue paper

So, after upsettin’ mommy and tellin’ her that she still owed $800.00 and makin’ her sign a new contract; due to their incompetence, they’re voidin’ their own contract? These peeps just don’t know when to stop. (Dezi shakes her head)

 Raena sleeps in Gen7 stroller

I’s just gonna have a short nap.

Yep sissy, I’s thinkin’ the same thing. ‘Specially since in all this time mommy hasn’t lost her tempurr not once. No screamin’, callin’ peeps names or cursin’. They have no idea how lucky they are to have never known mommy’s wrath. We’ve gotta go back next week to hopefully pick up mommy’s upper denture. We’re sure purrayin’ hard that it fits this time. And hopefully, mommy can find somewhere else to go to finish all this up. It sure has been an ordeal and quite furankly, we’re all tired of it. Anyways, let’s finish brekky and see ifin mommy will let us play with our hexbugs. Since they run off batteries and not ‘lectricity, mommy has no reason to keep ‘em from us. And hopefully these storms will pass soon and we can visit all our furiends.

Till the next time…………………………………………Be Blest!!!

Service Cats What’s The Easiest Task To Train

Meowllo and welcome to another Miserable Monday. Dat means it’s time fur another educational Service Cats posty. It’s also Labor day here in da U.S., and we gotta tell ya’ we seriously thought ‘bout lettin’ mommy have da day off. You know, no laborin’ on labor day?. But we got some great questions from our last Service Cats posty, so we thought we’d give ya’ some answers. Let me say dat some of da training questions we’re bein’ asked apply or can/should apply to all cats, not just Service Cats. We are covering them under the Service Cats posts, because Service Cats must be well behaved in general. Training a Service Cat isn’t just training the specific duties they will perform, but also good behavior. As with all our educational posts the following will be written in human English. Ifin you’ve missed any of da posts in this series, you can ketch up by clickin’ da links below.

Now that you’re all caught up, let’s see what today’s question is. Awnty Jean, Shoko and Kali from the Canadian Cats asked, “How long does it take to train the average kitty to perform an “action” properly? And “Is there something they learn quicker than others, and why?” Well now those are great questions. Initially the first thing you want to train any cat/kitten is to know and respond to their name. We’re not trying to be “smart” with this answer. But before any training can commence, it’s important that kitty, doggy, whatever animal you’re dealing with knows their name and will respond to it. This can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days. Mommy doesn’t allow anyone to call us kitty kitty. The reason for that is because kitty is not our names and it’s very important that we respond to our names every time. As a result of this we do not respond to anyone who says “here kitty kitty”. And yes, any cat/kitten can be trained to respond when called by their name.

Raena lays in mommys lap and starts to massage

Now, we know this isn’t the answer awnty Jean was truly wondering tho’. She wants to know about those specific tasks we’re trained for like calling 911, massaging mommy or driving her wheelchair. So, we’ll address that now. First, every kitty is different, even within the same breed. Knowing that, you can’t expect each kitty to learn at the same pace. For instance, me was 3 weeks old when me came to live with mommy and sis Lexi, and me started alerting mommy that she was going to pass out within a couple of days. Sis Lexi had always known mommy was going to pass out, but she never alerted to it until watching me do it for about a year. And then suddenly one day, sis Lexi started alerting mommy too. So you could say it took sis Lexi 11 years to learn that task and me, 2 days. But in all fairness, mommy had never thought about training that particular task so she never asked that of Lexi, nor trained her for it.

Lexi lays in mommy's lap and massages

Dat’z da spot mommy. How ’bout you, am I’z gettin

da right spot on your leg here?

Mommy says probably the easiest task to train a kitty to perform is massage. How long does it take to train a kitty to do this? Because it’s an instinctive behavior, it usually only takes a few training sessions before kitty performs perfectly. Remember, Raena was doing this her first night with mommy. It took me a couple of days to learn, and about 2 weeks to learn the specific areas me was to focus on. Now this brings us to another question and a few replies we’ve received. Let’s address the replies first. Several of you said that you had kitties that started out without their claws but eventually those claws came out and of course the massage is no longer enjoyable. Remember we told you that any massages should be performed in a place that was secure for kitty in the event they lost their sense of balance, etc.. The reason kitty loses balance or those claws come back out is because kitty has entered a state of “Euphoria”. That means kitty has entered a state of extreme pleasure and is no longer thinking; they are lost in the moment. A light tap on the paw will rouse kitty and cause the claws to retract again. You can also try speaking to kitty. If you choose to speak, do so in a quiet and calming voice. Mommy will say things like, “Claws in”, “That hurt a bit”, “Thank you”, “That’s enough”. Remember, Training is all about Repetition.

While we’re on the subject of massage, we need to address another question we got about this. We were asked how to train a kitty to massage in the first place. Meaning, they believe their kitty doesn’t know how to knead at all. Altho’ the possibility for this is exists, especially for bottle fed hand raised kittens, it’s not likely. Kitty is kneading, you just aren’t seeing it. Let’s explain this action and the reason for it. When a kitten is born, ideally they will have a mother cat to raise them. When kitty gets ready to eat, they will latch onto the mothers teat and begin to suckle. This action is then followed by gently kneading around that teat to make more milk come out. If you’ve ever milked a cow, you know that after pulling the teat and dispensing milk, you push up and into the udder of the cow before pulling it back down. This motion allows the teat to fill up with the maximum amount of milk to dispense. Even a kitty who has never fed from a teat will still knead instinctively just like purring. They just may not do it as much or in the open.

Mommy petting Raena while she sits in her lapIs this right mommy?

So, you believe your kitty doesn’t know how to knead; can you train kitty to do so? The answer is Yes. Remember, this action is instinctual. You just need to get kitty to perform the action around you and for you. This is the point at which an outsider will think you’re crazy, because you’re going to have to get kitty to that Euphoric state before they knead. Think about the things that cause your kittys’ motor boat (purr) to rev up. Mommy used to be able to just look at sis Lexi even from across the room, and she would turn on her purr box so loudly that things around her shook. She would get so excited she would knead the air if she couldn’t get to mommy. I prefer for mommy to rub my chin and coo at me. Mommy will say things like, “I love you Dezi, You’re my sweet angel girl, You’re my beautiful blue eyed angel, Mommy loves her baby, Sweet Dezi,” or she’ll sing the made up songs she sings to me. Let me tell ya’, nothing gets me going faster than mommy singing sweet songs to me. So, once you’ve found kittys’ trigger, keep them going, they will eventually start kneading. Again, they’ve reached that Euphoric state and all actions they perform now are totally instinctual. It’s not uncommon for any kitty in this state to drool as well.

Another option to train kitty is to give them a blanket, bed, throw, etc. made of plush fabric or faux fur. Most kitties love the feel of these materials and automatically knead them. Me has torn up at least one blanket a year, a throw and 2 cat beds. Me can knead those with me’s claws much to mommy’s chagrin. But she allows it because me doesn’t use me’s claws on her.

Dezi kneads the cat bed

So to sum up our answer to today’s question, the easiest task to train a kitty is massage because it’s taking advantage of an instinctual action. Because it’s instinctual, kitty is eager to learn. Training kitty to massage (knead) a specific area can take as little as a few hours to a few months. It takes less time to train a kitten than an adult, but both can be trained.

Well now, me’s gonna wrap it up and see ifin me can’t get mommy to take me fur a stroll later. Purrlease feel free to ask your training questions or any other questions you might have in da comment section, or you can email us via our contact page. And by da way, those emails are private. We’re da only ones dat can see them. We hope you all have a relaxing Labor Day. And by da way, mommy said da foto above was one of her favorites cuz Raena and me were sleeping peacefully together on da cat tree.

Do you (does your kitty) knead anything in particular besides your human?

Do you (your kitty) have a favorite blanket or bed?

Have you had to replace anything because kitty kneaded it to death?

Showdown On The Cat Tree

OMC Mommy, da weekend is finally here. Me thought it was never gonna get here. And what do you think ‘bout the pain in me’s hiney lil Raena jumpin’ in da shower yesfurday like she was gonna help you or somethin’? (shakes head) Me’s tellin’ ya’ dat kid sometimes thinks she’s too big fur her own bloomers. Did you see her try to take dat treat outta me’s mouth da other day? And what’s up with her constantly dirtyin’ up me’s pawdee box. Doesn’t she know da other pawdee box is hers? She has no respect mommy. Me’s tellin’ ya’, me thinks you made a mistake or somethin’. Can we return her?

Dezi getting mommy loving and petting.

Return me? Too big fur mines bloomers? Y, Sis Dezi I’s just wanna be like you. I’s wanna do everythin’ da same way you do. You’s minez hero. Mines amazingly pawsum big sisfur.

Raena up close on top of the stroller

Layin’ it on a bit thick don’cha’ think Raena?

Dezi and Raena lay in th floor

Whatever do you mean sissy?  (Raena meows with a look of concern on her innocent face)

Alright girls, enough. I’ve got a migraine. (Dezi and Raena both scurry to give mommy a massage before the other, and then a small game of whacky paw ensues over who was there first) Girls!!! You can each massage a side. Now Dezi, we are blest to have Raena in our lives. She loves you and looks up to you, just like you did with sis Lexi all those years ago. And Raena, you need to learn not to jump on sis Dezi constantly, especially when she’s in the pawdee box. That’s just not nice. And do you remember when you bit your tail the other day and yelled? Well, don’t be biting sis Dezi’s tail. Just because it doesn’t hurt you, doesn’t mean it don’t hurt.

Yeah Raena, what mommy said.

Well same to you sis Dezi.

(Both head for the top of the cat tree and the showdown commences.)

Ifin ya’ can’t see da video, purrlease click here.

Yes, me always wins da showdowns. Me’s da Queen, and me was here furst. Fur those of ya’ wonderin’, we don’t use our claws or teeth durin’ any of these play fights. So rest assured no kitty’s bein’ hurt. Fank you fur your concern, but mommy wouldn’t stand fur actual fighting and/or hurting from either of us. Anyways, we’s joinin’ Rascal and Rocco and their pawsum co hosts fur da weekly Pet Parade. Get your questions in fur our next Service Cat posty, and don’t furget da Pawlympics. You only have a couple more days to get your fly fishin’ fotos in to us. Oh, and we have a winner fur our Customizable Pet Bowl. Mommy remided me dat me furgot to announce da winners of our last give away, so we didn’t wanna do it again. Anyways, Concats awnty Cindy and Maggie Meme, you’re gonna luv your new bowl.

If you have fur siblings, do you like to play fight?

If you have play fights, who wins?

And The Storm Rages On

Well meowllo everypawdy. Me’s runnin’ really late today and it’s all cuz of da weather. It’s like Spring furgot she was supposed to be here and Winter came back fur his bags and decided to stay a while. And it’s not just here, lots of you are having da colds and some of you even have snow. OMC  All day yeafurday was dark as night and we just knew somethin’ big was about to happen. So ’round dinner time there was da loudest boom me thinks me’s ever heard, and then da skies opened up and da rains fell. Da wind was blowing so strong dat mommy’s wind chimes was singing non stop. And then came da pellets of ice beating down anything in their path. They were hitting da roof, da walls, da windows and da ground with such force me actually thought they were gonna break thru any minute. So to answer da burnin’ question on your minds…Yessiree, me was scared and hidin’ out behind da chair.

Dezi: Yeah I'm not laying on the cat tree looking out the door today
Of Course me isn’t doin’ this today. MOL

At 5 o’clock this meownin’ mommy finally decided we should try to go to bed and get some sleep. Da storm seemed to have died down so all was quiet. Mommy gathered me up and turned off da lights and to bed we went. We always say our purrayers befur goin’ to sleep so once we settled in we began to purray. Befur we could even get half our purrayers said da storms started ragin’ again. And this time they were even louder. You know, no tee-vee to help mask da sound. You guessed it, me hauled me’s purretty little kitty girly hiney right off da bed and down da hall behind da chair again. Mommy didn’t move, and suddenly me realized me was all alone behind dat chair in da living room. So me came slinkin’ back to da bedroom and mommy. Me crawled under da bed while mommy finshed purrayin’; and then we both just laid there fur what seemed like hours just listening to da raging storm. Mommy cooed at me from da bed and me quietly mewed back at her from under da bed. Around 8:30 this meownin’ da storms finally calmed and me joined mommy on da bed so we could both finally get a little sleep.

Dezi: Your lap is the best mommy
Just hold me mommy, till da storm passes by.

After walking around on mommy’s chest a bit and swooshing me’s tail in her face a few times, me cuddled up next to mommy and we drifted off to dreamland; only to be jolted awake less than an hour later when da storms started up again. Da only good thing ’bout all these storms is dat mommy didn’t have da chance to rest long enough to freeze over, so she didn’t have to wait on me to get around this meownin’. Dat coulda been a long wait cuz coaxin’ me out from under da bed fur brekky took an hour. We can’t rely on mr. weatherman fur accurate repurrting so we’re not sure how long this is goin’ to last. We’ll be around to visit as soon as we can. We’re sendin’ purrayers fur all of you. Stay safe and warm and dry. The storm is still raging on here.

Dezi: I don't know whether to hide or stay here

Has Spring come to your area yet?
