So, we’re going to tackle a couple of questions today because they kind of go hand in hand. Here’s the questions: What age should kitty be spayed or neutered?, And: My kitty hates going out in the car/My kitty gets really stressed when he/she has to go to the VET, what can I do to make it easier on him/her?

Regardless of kitty’s age or background, they can be Trained. A really skittish kitty may always be a little fearful, but even they can learn to be calmer and less stressed. And, in the end, that’s all we can ask of them. We gave you Training Tips and Tricks on Harness and Leash Training here. There are numerous reasons to Train kitty to be comfortable with going out/riding in the car. We’ll be covering more of this in a future post. Anyways, we live in something called Tornado Alley; meaning a tornado could appear and wipe out everything in it’s path. Many of you live in areas that could flood or have the ground beneath you quake and open up. Regardless of weather, there are many natural disasters that could occur making it necessary for kitty to have to leave the home and ride in a car. So, Harness and Leash Training are always a good idea. You should always secure kitty inside their carrier with any provided tethers, or by clasping the leash to a zipper, handle or carrier grate. This step will ensure that kitty doesn’t escape even if they manage to get their carrier open. The last thing you need is a scared kitty running loose in an unfamiliar place possibly surrounded by unfamiliar people/other anipals.

We highly recommend keeping kitty familiar with going out throughout their lives. We also recommend taking kitty to places other than the VET. Think about it, if the only place you ever went when you went for a ride in the car was to some place you didn’t like, how eager would you be to continue to go? So often kitties only go out when they need to visit the VET. Even the calmest of kitties will eventually get a little stressed out by these outings. Our prayer would be that no kitty ever got sick or needed regular doctor’s visits, but the reality is that as kitty ages VET visits become more frequent. And, since we can’t all live in areas that have VETs that make house calls, a kitty that’s comfortable going out makes those visits much less stressful for all involved.

Me thinks me’ll take a little nap in here.

Remember, kitty also feeds off your emotions. More than a few times we’ve heard, “My cat seems to know I need to take them to the VET.” The answer is, of course we know. We’ve already felt your stress about having to corral us into our carrier and make the drive while listening to us sing the song of our people. Take control of your own emotions and start sending “positive vibes” instead of nervousness or stress. No matter how small your home may be, we recommend leaving kitty’s carrier/stroller out at all times. The more comfortable kitty is with their carrier/stroller, the less stressed they’ll be when you close them up in it. You should make closing kitty in their carrier a game you play off and on throughout their lives. Once kitty is in their carrier, calmly close it up for just a few minutes at a time. Once kitty is comfortable with this, start taking kitty out to the car and drive around the block and back home again. You can eventually make these trips longer and longer. And remember, all trips in the car shouldn’t end up at the VETs. We often go through the drive thru at the bank, just to say hey to the tellers in the windows. We’ve also gone with mommy to buy gas. We stay in the car while she pumps the gas and then we either go inside with her to pay or go thru the drive thru window. Again, we’ll cover more of this in a later post.

Ifin I’s stay here long enuff, maybe I’s can go fur a stroll later.

Now to the question of when kitty should be altered. In recent years all surgical procedures have advanced and become safer. Lots of VETs perform what is called a Gonodectomy (removal of the ovaries or testes) on very young kittens, beginning around 6 weeks of age. Most require the kitten to weigh at least 2 pounds. This procedure is more common in rescue and shelter kittens in an attempt to make sure adopted kitties actually get the surgery and can’t reproduce. While we totally understand the need for this, mommy is personally against this procedure on such a young and small animal. That being said, we also don’t believe kitty/doggy should be allowed to mature and “go thru a heat cycle” before being altered. We certainly don’t believe kitty should have to experience the birthing process. It is not necessary and increases the risk of mammary cancer, cervical cancer and other medical issues. We tend to favor the spay/neuter surgery occur when kitty/doggy is about 5 to 6 months of age. By this time the male testes have fully dropped, the female ovaries have fully formed and there’s less chance of “missing/leaving” behind an ovary or testicle. Altho’ rare, this has and does happen.

We were also asked if we believed that a female kitty in heat was in some form of pain and should be given pain meds. Our answer to this is absolutely not. But, that being our opinion, we researched said topic and could find nothing to substantiate that kitty is in actual pain. The yowling and contorting of her body is not due to pain, but her desire to mate. She doesn’t need pain meds, she needs to be altered as does the spraying male tom that’s yowling, fighting and stinking up the house/yard/neighborhood. It is our opinion that we often over medicate these days whether it be human or animal. That being said, kitty should be altered before she has to go into heat. Again, it’s much healthier to spay kitty before a heat cycle. However, don’t let that stop you from adopting a mature kitty who hasn’t been spayed. It’s never too late. And it’s never too late to start Training your kitty. Remember, Training is all about Repetition and Rewards. To revisit Training kitty to go out, you should take kitty out at least once a week throughout their life. This will help insure that VET visits go smoothly and kitty isn’t bouncing off the walls when you take them in the car.

Get Off The Phone Mommy

Meowllo everypawdy, hope your week is goin’ great. It’s been busy, busy ‘round here lately. Let me tell ya’ findin’ somepawdy to help mommy is a lot of work. You know with da exception of a couple hours yesfurday when mommy’s case worker was here, mommy was on da fone most of da day with one purrson or another. She’s gotta check refurences, both purrsonal and business, and set up interview times, and get others applications. Mommy says even tho’ it’s a lot of work, she’s happy dat we actually have a few different peeps to choose from. At furst it was lookin’ purretty bleak.

Dezi lays on the floor with her Yeowww nip rainbow
Oh, Hey everypawdy, how ya’ doin’?

And of course you all know we’re lookin’ fur a helper of da 4 legged furry purrin’ kind too, so dat takes up a lot of mommys day. Everyday she calls da shelters, rescues, and newspaper and online ads to see ifin me’s new sisfur is out there. So far everytime we think we’ve found her somethin’ happens and we’re startin’ all over again. But dat’s okay, we just know da right sissy will show up. Me thinks when she does we oughtta throw a pawty. What do ya’ll think? Me thinks anythin’ is a good reason to celebrate. MOL  Me just has to get mommy off dat fone.

Lickety, lick, lick, lick

Anyways, this month has just gotten away from me. Me had planned to have another give away this month, but things just didn’t fall into place in time, so da furst week of June, stay tuned. Me thinks you’re gonna luv this one. And mommy is also tryin’ to figger out how to shoot a tutorial video. Me knows ya’ wanna know what it’s about, but you’ll just have to stay tuned. Me can tell ya’ me’s not gonna be da most coop-purrative purrticipant.

Well there’s a long weekend comin’. Mommy’s birthday always falls on da weekend of Memorial day, and this year it’s da Furiday befur. As me told you befur, we aren’t gonna have a big brouhaha. Mommy had hoped to have a new furry purrer by then, but since dat isn’t gonna happen me told her we could play snuggle snuggle. Just gotta keep her off da fone long enuff.

Dezi rolls on her Yeowww Nip rainbow

Mommy thinks me’s been sleepin’ too much lately. Me doesn’t seem interested in playin’ much. And she’s tried everythin’. So just fur mommy, last night and this meownin’ me had a little play fest with me’s Yeowww rainbow dat we got fur Christmas. It sure made mommy happy. She was smilin’ and gigglin’ like a little girly watchin’ me play. And she didn’t get on da fone once. It doesn’t take much to purrlease mommies. And of course she had da flashy box close by and was snap, snap, snappin’ away, so me thought me would share a few of those fotos with ya’ll today. Me’s gonna wrap it up so we can try to get by and visit as many of ya’ as pawssible befur da storm hits.

Ooooooh Even da floor smells like nip.

Do ya’ll have any plans fur da long weekend?

All Before Noon

Well it’s not even noon and mommy’s been cleanin’ non stop. Course by da time you read this it will be well after noon. Anyways, me tried to help her with all dat cleanin’ but she didn’t seem all dat impressed with me’s attempts. Let me ‘splain. After getting’ up this meownin’ and goin’ thru our normal routine we headed to da kitchen so mommy kuld make sis Lexi and me sum brekky. She always has a drink cup with melted ice from da night afur dat she has to wash up afur getting’ down to da business of puttin’ our noms in our plates. So mommy got out our plates and put them on da prep counter and then turned da water on to wash up da drinkin’ cup. Now lots of ya’ will member dat mommy has times when she doesn’t feel her extremities, da legs, arms, hands and feet. But thru da years she has learned to make ‘em work even when she doesn’t feel ‘em, it just takes a lot of concentration.

Dezi stretching the arch backed pose on the vanity

Well this meownin’ was one of those times. Unfurtunately mommys’ concentration musta been somewhere else, cuz when she went to pick up da drinkin’ cup, it slipped right outta her hand and fell to da floor splatterin’ sticky watered down drink all over da place. She saw it fallin’ and didn’t even try to stop it. And once it hit da ground, she just stared at it pourin’ da remainin’ liquid all over da floor. Me meowed and sis Lexi hissed tryin’ to break thru mommy’s meownin’ haze. Mommy shook her head as ifin to shake off da haze and sed, “Oh my cats, I’ve gotta clean that up.” She reached down to pick up da cup and me saw da puddle of liquid on da floor and went over to mop with me’s floofy tail and paws. Yep, me just walked right into dat puddle and sat down and started da tail swoosh. Back and forth went me’s tail and da liquid went splashin’ even further onto da floor. Me even swooshed sum right up in sis Lexi’s face. Me is such a good helper. And me knew sissy kuld use a drink after takin’ her antacid, so she shulda purreciated havin’ a drink delivered right to her mouth, right?.

Lexi with mouth open laying on the floor
My mouth’s not that big!!!

Well it seems nopawdy was impurressed with me’s help cuz sissy hissed at me and mommy threw out da paper towel she had been usin’ to clean her legs with and started hollerin’, “Oh Dezi, NO! Now you’ve gotta have a bath too.” A bath? Uh no, not afur brekky me thought, and took off runnin’. Sis Lexi was in hot pursuit as me’s tail swooshed and continued to scatter sticky liquid thru out da house includin’ more in sissy’s face as she was so close behind me. By now mommy was hot on her tail and hollerin’ da whole time, “Dezi! Get back here, NOW!” Back there, me thought? So does she want me to help or not? You know sometimes you just can’t seem to purrlease anypawdy. Sissy retreated to da bed fur a little tongue and spit bath and mommy scooped me up and to da pawdee box room we went fur a purropurr bath. Me smells really purretty now, and all afur brekky.

Dezi laying on the floor and licking paw
Hmmmmm me thinks mommy missed a spot.

Mommy got da floor cleaned as bestest she kuld so we kuld get our brekky afur lunch, and sed she wuld get to da moppin’ with an appropriate tool later. Least da floor, sis Lexi and me ain’t sticky any more and we did get our brekky afur lunch. And mommy finally got to sit down and have a purropurr cup of coffee. Me guesses mommy will still tell peeps dat we can’t do chores like moppin’. You know tomorrow is ifin pets had fumms (thumbs) day. And me bets dat ifin me had those fumms me kulda really cleaned dat floor to mommys likin’. And me kulda made her a cup o’ joe too. And we wuld be able to work da flashy box to ketch some of mommys’ funny antics. Just think of all da things we cats kuld do with fumms. Me wuldn’t have to dictate me’s postys, me kuld drive da wheelchair with me’s paws ‘stead of me’s mouth, and we kuld take over da world. Well, me’s gunna go dream ‘bout all da things we kuld do with fumms.

Have you ever had a hazy moment that resulted in a mess?

How would you (or your pet) use thumbs if they had them?

Till da next time……………………………………………Be Blest!!!

Finally Furiday

It’s Finally Furiday!!! We told ya’ dat our catputer updated to da new Windows 10 and we were tryin’ to find everything and reload all da stuff we use and so many of ya’ sed you hadn’t updated cuz of all da bad you heard ‘bout it. We wanna tell ya’ dat you shuldn’t be ‘fraid. By this time most of all those bad things have been fixed and worked out. Mommy sez da biggest thing ‘bout Windows 10 is dat it be different, and we are all creatures of habit who don’t like change. We still haven’t found everyfin’ and we’re not yet thru reloadin’ programs, but we’re likin’ it so far. And NO, Microsoft didn’t pay us to say dat. MOL

Dezi sitting in box

Now yous askin’ why it is dat we’re still reloadin’ stuff right? Well dat’s cuz we’re havin’ innernet trubbles. We had a pointment yesfurday fur a fix it man to come out and take a look. Da pointment time was tween da hours of 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.; kuld they be more vague?. Anyways, mommy sat right here waitin’ all day long fur mr. ATT  innernet fix it man to show up or call. Mommy relunctantly closed da door when it got dark and cold even tho he still hadn’t showed up. A kupple hours later and our pointment time over we still hadn’t heard from mr. ATT fixer. Mommy has a doctors pointment today so we can’t call and have him come out now, but trust me, mommy will be havin’ a chat wiff da peeps at ATT. And she found da cell fone nummer fur da last mr. ATT innernet fix it man dat came here so she has plans to give him a call too. Anyways, we hope this publishes and dat you all continue to bear with us. We will be by to visit as soon a we can. We seem to be able to get online fur short bursts of time so we be tryin’ to visit durin’ those windows. In da meantime, here’s a few fotos of how we be spendin’ our no innernet days.
