Blest Sunday: Sisterly Conversations

MeOW WooHoo It’s Blest Sunday and me has so much to give fanks fur this week. RaenaBelle, where are you, it’s time to count our Blessings. Me swears, you’re never where you’re s’posed to be. (Raena comes running down the hall and jumps over Dezi) Hisssssssss Quit jumpin’ on me!!! Kittens, You can be such a pest sometimes.

But I’s luvs you sissy. I’s just wanna play with mine’s bestest sisfur ever.

Me’s your only sisfur, Raena. Besides, what you call play is more like bein’ a pest. You know, like me’s piddle purroblems. Mommy insists that me splain to everypawdy why me was avoidin’ the pawtty box, so they wouldn’t think mommy be mistreatin’ me and overlookin’ me bein’ sick. Furst me wants to meow fank you fur your concern, but me’s pawtty box issues are more behavioral and have a name…RaenaBelle the mighty huntress.

You blame me fur everythin’ sissy. It ain’t right, just not right at all. I’s gonna tell mommy you’re bein’ mean to me.

Hmmmmpht Go ahead Raena, you’re fur sure to blame here. Some of ya’ may ‘member back when sis Lexi got sick and had trouble balancin’. Mommy took the covers off our pawtty boxes to help her. Then when Raena showed up, she kept tryin’ to play with me’s tail while me was takin’ care of business; so we had to get a new pawtty box with a lid. Things were goin’ purretty well till this summer, when Raena took up layin’ in wait on top of the pawtty box. Me swears, the girl never stops. Anyways, bein’ the ambush hunter she is, she started tryin’ to whacky paw me while me was usin’ the facilities. So, me’s only recourse was to pawtty somewhere else…the floor and then the piddle pads. Most of this has been worked out, but mommy decided to leave some piddle pads down, just in case. And of course, she hopes we’ll use them fur hairballs and upset tummy hurls.

Yeah, like you’d actually try to hit a piddle pad sissy. When you need to hurl, you just stand up and let ‘er rip no matter where you are.

That’s not true Raena, me hit the piddle pad just the other day.

Sure you did sissy. That was after lettin’ a big chunk go on the floor and mommy runnin’ over to try to put somethin’ unner you. You took off runnin’ down the hall and hit the edge of a piddle pad.

Still, me did hit it Raena and that’s all that counts. Anyways, ‘nuff ‘bout all that. What did you think of our new dinner plates that we won?

I’s thinkin’ I’s gonna like ‘em sissy. At furst I’s was a little ‘fraid of ‘em. But hey, they hold more than our current dishes, so that’s a win in mine’s book. Now we just gotta convince mommy to fill ‘em up.

Me agrees Raena. No sense in lettin’ all that space go to waste. Me knows you like that they’re shallow cuz of your smashed face.

Mine’s face isn’t smashed sissy. I’s just got a short nose. Mommy says I’s bootyful, even with mine’s short nose.

Whatever Raena. Hey did you see me’s new get up fur the Cat Scout choir auditions?

I’s did sissy. Can I’s use it too? I’s luvs to sing. Maybe we can record a song and dedicate it to mommy. We’re so Blest to have such a pawsum mommy, and I’s sure she’d luvs to hear us sing a song to her.

We’ll see Raena. Furst me has to figger out how to set up everythin’. But you’re purrobably right, mommy would luv us to sing together. She luvs any kind of togetherness. And, since me’s been hangin’ out with ya’ll all week in spite of the storms, she’s on cloud nine right now.

That’s true sissy. I’s know we’re both very purroud of you fur overcomin’ your fears.

How many times does me have to tell ya’, me’s not afraid Raena. Me just didn’t see any need to hunt UTB this week.

Do you like mine’s pawrty plans mommy?

Sure sissy, whatever you meow. Anyways…I’s wanna give fanky fanks fur you and mommy. I’s so Blest to be a pawrt of our family. And, we’re so Blest to have such amazin’ furiends. And meowin’ of furiends, I’s was thinkin’ we could have a Carnivale themed pawrty to celebrate your birthday and gotchaday. You know, like in Venice. What do you think? I’s thinkin’ everypawdy could throw on their bestest carnivale masks and send us their fotos. We could even have a contest fur the bestest outfit.

That sounds like fun Raena. You just might pull of me’s pawrty after all. Me can’t wait to see all our furiends dressed up fur the pawrty. Chatting Cats: 12 Amazing And Fabulous Facts

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. Hey sissy, I’s think we got a new neighbor. I’s saw peeps cartin’ stuffs in to that ‘pawrtment on the end there fur the last couple of days. I’s sure hope all their stuffs didn’t get soaked durin’ the storms. Can you ‘magine sittin’ on a soppy wet chair? Ugh (Raena shudders and turns back to look out the door again.) I’s bet it would stink too.

Actually Raena, me can ‘magine it. Our ‘pawrtment flooded a few years back and everythin’ was wet and yucky. It took furever to get the management peeps to do their job and get us dried out. Are you sure you saw ‘em carryin’ in furniture stuff? Ya’ know, it might just be somepawdy cleanin’ up the ‘pawrtment after the last purrson moved out. Anyways, me thought we were gonna play CK’s amazin’ facts game.

I’s don’t know why you kitties don’t wanna purr along with mine’s business plan?.

Oh yeah. I’s just luvs learnin’ things ‘bout our furiends. I’s hope lots of kitties, woofies and peeps play along. Maybe I’s can even get mine’s next business idea from it. Ya’ know, the plans fur Purrs with a Purr-Puss aren’t goin’ so good. Lots of kitties don’t seem to wanna work. They’d rather give their purrs away fur a few measly treats. I’s keep tellin’ ‘em we could be rich, rich, rich and have tons of treats. Y, We could even make enuff green papers to buy our own treat farm. But no, no kitty seems innerested. And well, we can’t be every where ourselves, so looks like I’s need another plan.

Back to the drawin’ board, Raena.

Sorry ‘bout that Raena. Me did think that was your bestest idea so far. Anyways, let’s answer these questions and see what happens. Me’s sure you’ve got ideas just waitin’ to come out. Me will take the furst question.

1. What is your favorite day of the week?

Truth is, we luv everyday. Mommy says each day we have together is a Blessing. But, me is pawrtial to Sundays cuz that’s the day we get to meow Fank you fur all our Blessings.

2. What is the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten?

It’s mine’s turn now sissy. Altho’, we don’t actually eat many strange things ‘round here. I’s think I’s might have eaten one of those crazy gnats once. And I’s have been known to eat a dried up left over piece of food that you spit out onto the floor. Other than that, we don’t really get many strange things here.

3. What small business would you like to start?

Well, I’s tried to start up Purrs with a Purr-Puss. And, I’s not completely sure it’s a dead idea. But I’s will be lookin’ into other ventures. Maybe I’s could get peeps to pay us fur the honor of feedin’ treats to kitties. Or maybe…

4. What is the best food on a hot summer day?

When it’s really hot, me doesn’t really wanna eat much. But, me has had a few licks of ice cream befur, and it was purretty tasty.

5. When have you had a small decision bring big consequences?

Me fur sure wants to answer this one. The day me met mommy, me chose to go to her ‘stead of play with me’s 10 littermates. And cuz of that, mommy saved me’s life and brought me home with her to live and luv furever and ever.

6.What vegetable do you like?

We’re kitties and obligate carnivores. We don’t like vegetables. Any vegetables. Come to think of it, is mommy an obligate carnivore too sissy? You know, she don’t really like veggies either.

That’s a good question Raena. Me has no idea. But, you’re right; mommy doesn’t like veggies.

7. Where are you most likely to be at 8:00 on a Saturday night?

Anyways, it’s me’s turn. Ifin we’re on time, then we’ll be eatin’ at 8:00 on any night. Least that’s the case at this time of year. Now, in the winter time, we eat at 7:00 p.m.. You oughtta take the next one Raena. You’re the one that watches too much tv and uses all those silly terms you learn.

8. What slang word or phrase do you like to use?

Are those slang words sissy? Hmmmmm I’s don’t really have a favorite. I’s hear mommy say somethin’ ‘bout kissin’ her lily white sometimes. Not sure what her lily white is, but…

9. Did you ever want to change your name? If so to what?

Me would never wanna change me’s name. Mommy said the minute me chose her that me was her Destiny, and that’s what she named me. She just changed the spellin’ so me could be unique.

I’s wouldn’t wanna change mine’s name either sissy. Since mine’s name means new beginnings, I’s think it’s purrfect.

10. What food do you crave?

Rabbit!!! Me can meow fur both of us on this one. And pizza, we do luv a good pepperoni pizza.

11. If your life had a sound track what song would you pick for it?

Mommy says our soundtraks would be, You are so Beautiful and Unchained Melody and…

It’s mine’s turn sissy. Mine’s would be, Stand By Me and Walk Through This World With Me, and I’s think the soundtrak fur our family would be When You Say Nothing At All and The Keeper of the Stars. Yep, I’s think that’s it fur sure.

12. If you could have lunch with anyone living who would it be?

This one’s easy peasy and would be the same fur all of us. We’d luv to have lunch with all of you, our dear furiends.

You’re so right sissy. That would be such an amazin’ lunch. This has been lots of fun. ‘Course as always, when we get sentimental, we shed a few tears. Mommy says music speaks to the heart and can soothe the savage beastie.

Me thinks that’s why she sings to us so much Raena. She’s tryin’ to calm you down. MOL

Tell All Tuesday: Piddle Pads And Cat Diapers, Oh My

Raena: Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. Can anypawdy hear me over all these thunder boomers? Mommy, I’s don’t think anypawdy can hear me. (Raena looks around from her perch at the door and sees mommy taking photos of a very displeased Dezi.) Sissy!!! What in the world are you wearin’ sissy?

Dezi: Nuffin!!! Me ain’t wearin’ nuffin’ but me’s furs Raena!!! Mommy get this thing off me, right now!!! Can’t you see it doesn’t fit? Me has too much tail floof. Besides, what self respectin’ kitty belle would wear such a thing? Me doesn’t care that it would be helpful. Me wishes you had known ‘bout it when sis Lexi was sick too. She would’a fur sure told you where to put it. Me can hear her now. The hissin’ and screamin’…it would’a been epic. What’s that? You think she would’a worn this, just cuz you asked her too? Well, guess we’ll never know. Me can tell ya’ that me will have to be one sick kitty befur you ever come near me with that thing again. Hmmmmpht

Sissy, you shouldn’t meow at mommy like that. (Raena sees mommy A heading her way with the diaper and runs.) Don’t you dare mommy!!! I’s a good girl. I’s use the pawtty box every single time. And I’s always try to make it to a piddle pad befur I’s hurl any hairballs. Meowin’ of, I’s know you’re happy that the new Washable Piddle Pads don’t move ‘round all over the floor, but I’s want mine’s slide back. What happened to the cheap plastic ones?

Well Raena, since you like to use them as slides, they don’t stay put and sometimes get all torn up. Mommy says they won’t absorb much if the piddle absorbing middle is shredded. So, when the peeps at the Pet Parent Brand reached out and offured to send us a couple of washable ones, mommy jumped on it. Me’s not sure why she thought we needed the diapers too tho’. Me’s not wearin’ those, they pinched me’s tail.

You can see how much nicer the Washable piddle pad I’s sittin’ on looks.

You do have a lotta fluff back there sissy. Mommy said she had to order by waist size and not tail floof. Anyways, they may come in handy someday. You know, you’re no spring kitty anymore.

Service Cats: Free Or Scheduled Feeding: Should Cats Graze

The following post will be written in human English for reader and translator ease. Our Service Cat posts aren’t intended to be an all inclusive Training Manual but rather Tips, Tricks and Techniques used/developed by mommy A thru her many years of animal training, cats in purr-ticular. And to offer insight into your questions about Everything Feline. Always remember, successful Training is all about Repetition and Rewards.

Free Feeding:

There’s been a long standing debate about whether or not kitties should Free Feed or have Scheduled mealtimes. We’re on a Schedule around here. Often times Free Feeders worry that kitty may get hungry while they’re away at work or school, or overnight while they sleep. Some think Free Feeding means they can sleep later because kitty won’t be waking them up to eat. Some Free Feed because kitty only nibbles and they worry he/she won’t get enough to eat. So, let’s look at Free Feeding. More often than not, dry kibble is the meal left out. It’s quick, easy and isn’t likely to spoil. We know that kitties don’t typically drink enough water as it is, so feeding kitty a dry food can actually dehydrate them further. Kitty’s hydration should always be a concern. Regardless of what kitty eats, make sure he/she has access to fresh water at all times.

Now let’s look at kitty’s hunger. Will kitty actually starve if he/she misses a meal? Will kitty starve if their meal is a few hours late? The obvious answer is No. So, why then do we think that kitty can’t go without while you’re at work or school? It really isn’t logical. As for sleeping in, there’s a few things you can do here. The first is to train kitty to keep your schedule and sleep when you do. The best way to achieve this is to tire kitty out right before bedtime. An energetic play time is just what the doctor ordered. And, if you look at kitty’s base drives, you’ll understand that kitty’s world is all about the hunt. There’s a lion inside your house kitty just waiting to come out.

Me was a kibble kitty till it made me sick.

There are some real dangers to Free Feeding. Obesity has become an increasing problem these days. Cats in the wild have to exert energy to hunt and catch their meal before they can consume it. All Fluffy and Fido have to do is walk over to the food dish. They’re not burning up any calories and thus become overweight and lethargic. And we’ve all heard, “My cat turned his/her nose up at _____________.” or “ My kitty’s really finicky.” If kitty’s not hungry because kibble is available all the time, he/she isn’t likely to try something new.

Another real concern with Free Feeding is that kitty’s body stays in the digest mode and never fully coverts their food or empties their stomach. This is very taxing on a cat’s organs. When cats smell food there’s a spike in insulin. If food is available all the time, that spike is constant and can overload kitty’s pancreas resulting in Diabetes. Free Feeding can also result in Urinary problems and Kidney disease. Kitties need to feel hungry, hunt, ketch, kill, eat/gorge and then rest so their bodies can function normally. The good news is that it’s never too late to change kitty to Scheduled Feeding. Check with your V-E-T if kitty has a long term illness and requires special care. Kitty will still do better on a Schedule, but the transition should be done under a doctor’s care.

I’s never had kibble or been free fed.

Scheduled Feeding:

Scheduled Feeding can be twice a day or more depending on your cat’s individual needs. For those cat’s who are accustomed to Free Feeding, weaning should be done slowly. Put kitty’s food down first thing in the morning and take it up a few hours later or when you leave for work/school. Put kitty’s food down when you get home or at dinner time, and take it up before going to bed. If you’re feeding canned or raw, never leave the food down for over an hour and always throw out any uneaten food. These foods spoil quickly. Remember, kitty is a hunter and the meal is their reward for a successful hunt. Play time before a meal can help kitty adjust to Scheduled Feeding. Playtime with kitty is also a time for bonding.

Well, that’s gonna do it fur today. Who would’a thought that meal time could cause confusion or even illness. Mommy says when in doubt ‘bout somethin’ regardin’ us kitties, she likes to look at our what our bigger cousins would do. After all, we’re not that far removed from our wild ancestors.
