Cats Chat: Garden Mews and More

(Mommy A checks the progress of the new AeroGarden and the lettuce pods she had “planted” earlier. Seeing some sprouts, she took the plastic caps off of a few pods and turned to speak to Dezi and Raena who were closely supervising everything.)

 AeroGarden pods close up

Now girls, I know you both had a good time playing with the last pods we planted. But, this is my lettuce, and I plan to eat all of these when they get big enough. So, leave them alone. You can watch them, and sniff them, but no pullin’ the pods out, and no eating the leaves. Okay?

(Dezi and Raena look at mommy, the garden and then each other.

Raena, did you hear what mommy said? She told you to leave the garden alone.

 Aerogarden with salad pods

Uh, I’s heard her mention both of us sissy. Besides, I’s never took a bite outta anythin’, that was you.

Me only took a bite of what mommy said me could. And it wasn’t very tasty, so that doesn’t count. Come on, let’s go play with our toys. It’s so pretty and warm outside, maybe we can talk mommy into a stroll or two.

 Raena rides in stroller

A stroll? Now that sounds like fun. Is it spring already sissy?

Nope. Me knows it looks and feels like it, what with the weather bein’ in the 80’s on Monday, and high 70’s so far this week, but mommy says that means we’re fixin’ to get hit with some really bad, cold weathers.

Well at least we’ve got the new ‘lectric blankey.

Yep, we sure are blest.

Raena looks over from atop the Liberty Cat tree

Can I’s help ya’ there O?

Hey sissy, did you see that O came back? Mommy was so relieved. They did some kitchen cleanin’ the other day to get ready fur the inspection today. He pulled everythin’ outta one of the kitchen cabinets so mommy could rearrange some stuffs and make it easier fur her to reach that pawsum food awnty Anonymous and awnty Cindy sent her. While he had everythin’ pulled out I’s got in the cabinet to play. I was havin’ me a good ole time. And ya’ know what? O was so nice. He didn’t get mad at me, he just asked me to get out so he could put stuffs back in. He even used mines name. He didn’t pull that ole here kitty kitty nonsense.

Yep, me heard him Raena. Me’s always wondered what self respectin’ kitty would actualy answer to here kitty kitty. Lessen it’s their name of course. And there ain’t nuffin’ wrong with that, but we’ve been blest with a mommy and names. Me don’t even know what that here kitty kitty means.

 Raena in tiger kitty holster

I’s don’t either sissy. Ya’ know, mommy’s case worker used to sit here and holler here kitty kitty all the time. I’s don’t know who she thought she was talkin’ too, cuz nopawdy in our house is named that. Then she’d try to pet me and say things like purretty kitty or good kitty. Hmmpht I’s just always walked off. I’s figgered she had me confused with one of her other peeps kitties, cuz mines name is Raena or RaenaBelle.

Yeah, me knows Raena. That’s one of the reasons me just takes a nap when she’s here.

Raena in tiger kitty holster cat harness

Oh sissy, I’s almost furgot. Did you see mines new harness? Awnty Vonda sent mommy some green papers and told her to get me a new harness that would fit cuz I’s outgrew mines furst one. We even got a matchin’ leash. Isn’t it cool? I’s feel like a little tigress in it.

Dezi checks out Raena in her new harness

Hey Raena, you be lookin’ spiffy in your new harness.

Reckon me could try it on somtime?

Me saw it Raena. It’s made a little on the large side, so mommy says me might even be able to wear it. Me hasn’t tried it on yet, but it is nice. Me really likes the leash too.

Raena in tiger kitty holster cat harness

Mommy says I’s’ll grow into it. It fits purrfectly ‘round the neck, but is a bit loose ‘round mines body. Mommy says I’s long and tall, but I’s’ll fill out in time just like you. I’s sure do fank you awnty Vonda, fur mines new harness and leash. I’s luvs it. We did have to buy it ourselves, but just in case any of ya’ are lookin’ fur a really well made harness fur your cats, ya’ might wanna check out the Kitty Holster. Unlike most harnesses that be made to fit doggies, these are specifically designed with the feline shape in mind. ‘Course they do have some fur doggies, chickens and rabbits too. They even make diapers, and chastity belts. I’s not know what that last one is, but mommy says most peeps will.

Raena sits in tiger kitty holster cat harness

Let’s wrap it up Raena. We’ve got that inspection comin’ up today and the exterminator’s comin’ too. And O’s s’posed to be here this afternoon, so it’s gonna be a purretty busy day. And then mommy has her regular monthly doctor’s ‘pointment tomorrow. Things sure are hoppin’ ‘round here, and me doesn’t mean you Raena. Fankfully, you’ve not tried to hit your head on the ceilin’ again fur days now. Mommy’s so happy ‘bout that. MOL  We hope you all have a pawsum day.

Not a Service Cat Monday

Well Meowllo, it’s time fur another Service Cat Monday. Can me be completely and totally honest with ya’? Yes? Good. We’ve only had the wheelchair workin’ again fur a couple of days. And durin’ those days mommy was hurtin’ purretty bad from head to toe; so she didn’t even put Raena in the chair once. Now me knows we told ya’ that mommy had intentions of trainin’ sis Raena to drive, and that we would chronicle it on Service Cat Monday. But havin’ fell on Thursday and with so much to do this week, mommy hasn’t even thought about trainin’ something new.

Dezi lays in mommys lap for loving

We hope you can furgive us. We plan to be back on track next week. Mommy told me that she actually thought about takin’ this week off cuz we had so much goin’ on. But we told her, that we had the bestest furiends in the universe and that you’d all understand.

Fankfully the snow has melted and the sun is shining. Mommy and Raena will be headin’ to mommys’ regular monthly doctors ‘pointment today, so they’ve gotta start getting’ ready shortly. Paws crossed, Raenas’ harness still fits. She has gained a few pounds. MOL

Raena posing in her harness on the small cat perch

We haven’t decided who’s gonna get to go with mommy to that dental exam on Wednesday, but we’ll let ya’ know. Since Raena’s still in trainin’, she should be the one to go. But, the dentist is in the Wally World town, and me wants to go. What do ya’ll think? Should we toss a coin? Draw straws? How would you decide?

 Raena in stroller

It’s simple sissy. You’ve gone everywhere with mommy fur 7 years, so now it’s mines turn.

Dezi sits in stroller

Hmmmmpht  That doesn’t make any difference. Maybe this should have been our Service Cat Monday posty; How to decide which Service Cat to take to town. What do ya’ll think? We’re gonna wrap it up now so mommy can get ready. We’ll be by to visit as soon as we can.

How would you decide which Service Cat to take?

Which of us do you think should go, and why?

Service Cats: Harness or Vest, Leash or Stroller

Well, it’s Service Cat Monday and time fur another infurmational, educational posty. We’ve answered most of da trainin’ questions ya’ll have asked. We’re goin’ to address da last one we received by e-mail today. ‘Bout a week ago mommy was talkin’ with one of our awnties who was askin’ ‘bout Raena and how her trainin’ was comin’ along. She expressed her “glee” in hearin’ ‘bout Raena’s drivin’ abilities. Now some of ya’ are fairly new to our bloggy and don’t have a clue why she would be “gleeful”. After all, our Service Cat posts have been very serious. Sure, me slipped a teensy bit of humor in each posty, but fur da most pawrt they were all serious business. Now, me specifically chose da word “glee” to describe her feelings cuz it means, open delight or purrleasure. She recalled to mommy some of da funny postys ‘bout me’s trainin’ sessions. And she asked mommy ifin she thought Raena would be more or less comical than me.

 Dezi laying in wheelchair

Of course, mommy can’t really answer dat question, cuz each kitty is different; and even usin’ da same trainin’ methods, each kitty will respawnd differently. Anyways, me got to meowin’ with mommy ‘bout this and ifin we don’t get anymore questions, then we thought it would be good to post a few of mes old trainin’ stories so you’ll know what kind of fun we’re in fur here at casa High. While trainin’ is serious business, there is fun to be had. Mommy says you have to remember to keep kitty innerested, and dat means ya’ can’t always be serious. Anyways, let’s get on with today’s posty. As with all our educational posts da following will be in human English. And ifin you’ve missed any posts in this series, purrlease click on da links at da bottom of this post.

 Dezi in harness

So this week we received an email that asked about Service Animal “Vests” and our ability to perform our tasks from inside a stroller. This reader also asked why, if we’re harness and leashed trained, would we need the stroller? Let’s first talk about the “Vests/Harness”.

 Raena in her harness

The Service Animal Vest can be purchased from many different places, including those agencies that certify/register Service Animals. (While researching for this post we found Service Animal Vests at several places including Walmart, and ranging in price from $8.00 to $150.00.)  All of these agencies, including the reputable ones, charge a fee for registration. Sometimes those fees do include a Vest, but most often Vests are available to purchase for an additional charge. But remember, certification/registration is not required by law and is totally voluntary. Another thing to remember is that only dogs trained for a few specific tasks are even recognized by the ADA as Service Animals. Many years ago when all species could be recognized, sis Lexi was certified/registered and had a Vest. Neither the Registration or Vest made her any more of a Service Cat than me without them. And it didn’t stop people from asking what she did and how. The Service Animal Vest is merely an early visual signal to those around that an animal is trained to perform some life saving task for their handler and that you shouldn’t do anything to distract that animal. There are also decals, cards, stickers and other items one can purchase to display as well.

Raena in stroller looking out the back

Now, why a stroller instead of us kitties walkin’ alongside mommy on our leashes? First we’ll say that mommy is so grateful that she has us and can have us accompany her wherever she goes. Altho’ mommy thinks some people scream “allergies” and don’t really have them, she respects others’ rights. And as much as mommy loves us, she doesn’t want to eat our fur, or anybody else’s for that matter. No matter how comfortable an animal may be in public, we are going to shed and our furs are going to float about until they land on something. And altho’ we are fairly large kitties, we are still much smaller than most rushing peeps, store buggies, etc.. Inside the stroller we are safe from handsy small peeps, careless phone chatting shoppers, diseases and filth on floors and parking lots that we could spread to mommy or each other and disease carrying insects and other animals. The stroller allows mommy to get her business done without having to worry about our safety. While out in the public, mommy doesn’t need a massage or to be helped out of the shower. She doesn’t need us to answer the phone or bring it to her. The thing mommy needs from us in public is to alert her before a Syncope incident.

Dezi looks out back of stroller

Now, we want to make certain everybody understands what Syncope is. Mommy does not have seizures. The definition of Syncope is: A sudden loss of consciousness. Mommy hates for this to happen in public and does everything she can to avoid it. But the possibility always exists, so having us with her makes a world of difference. Being in the stroller allows us to be near mommy, while keeping our furs away from those who might find a kittys presence offensive. The material that makes up the stroller allows us to still see and smell any changes in mommys body chemistry and her to be able to see and hear us alerting her. There’s no big obtrusive scene being played out to draw attention to us. Most people don’t even notice our presence unless we’re standing in line or waiting for someone or something. Most people who truly have need of a Service Animal aren’t trying to draw attention to themselves or the animal. The stroller is very convenient for us, but it also allows us to respect the rights of others.

 Raena in stroller

Well, we do hope this has cleared up any confusion about “Vests” and “Strollers”. We are in no way knocking the Service Animal Vest, but they’re not required by law. And because there’s no uniform code or governing body over these agencies, they don’t always guarantee the animal wearing them is actually a properly trained Service Animal.

Dezi laying in cat tree in new harness

Lessen we get anymore questions ‘tween now and next week, our next Service Animal Monday post will be a look back on some of mes comical wheelchair training. We’re getting ready fur Raenas training soon. Mommy’s already started cutting up some foam bumper pads in purr-purration. It is stormin’ here and our comments on WordPress hosted blogs are still goin’ to ya’ll’s spam folders. We would ask dat you purrlease check your spam folders fur us and approve our purrevious comments. There’s a couple blogs dat have done so and our comments are now showin’ up again on their posts. Mommy, Raena and me would like to remind all Americans to purrlease go out and VOTE tomorrow. We know a lot of you voted early, but fur those dat haven’t, tomorrow’s da day. We’re purrayin’ fur our Country, may Freedom continue to reign. God Bless America!!!

Blest Sunday: More Firsts For Raena

Welcome to a brand new Blest Sunday. We’re actually feelin’ some of those fall tempurratures ‘round here. A couple meownings this week we woke up to dew outside and cooler temps even in da house. ‘Course dat means mommy wants to drink more coffee and wear socklets. Fur those of ya’ wonderin’ what a socklet is, well it’s what we call those fuzzy wuzzy comfy socks. Mommy says ya’ can’t actually wear ‘em with shoes, but they’re great fur keepin’ da toes warm. Anyways, me’s used to mommys socklets, but Raena? ‘Member your furst…everything? Well dat’s what’s goin’ on with Raena. This is her furst fall, winter, cold weather, you name it, this is her furst of everything. Mommy says watchin’ Raena be exposed to new things is so adorable. Me doesn’t know ‘bout dat, but it was kinda funny watchin’ her da furst time mommy put on socklets. Well, let me just tell ya’ ‘bout it.

Dezi and Raena chatting over the cat scratchers.

When we all woke up Fursday meownin’ there was a bit of a chill in da air. So mommy grabbed a pair of socklets on our way to da kitchen. She made up our brekky and settled into her sittin’ chair so we could eat and she could enjoy a cup o’ joe. Raena and me settled in to our plates and started chowin’ down. Me saw mommy puttin’ on those socklets outta da corner of meez eyes, and thought nuffin’ of it. Raena on da other hand has never seen socks of any kind.

Mommy’s been wearin’ her floppy rubber sandals all summer or goin’ barefoot. So this was da furst time Raena ever saw mommys toes covered up. Her eyes got big as saucers and she bellied to da ground and inched towards mommys feet. She stuck her nose way out front and tried to sniff a whiff. ‘Course, da socks bein’ clean and mommy not usin’ smelly dryer sheets, they didn’t smell like anythin’. So Raena inched even closer to mommys fuzzy wuzzy socklets and put out her paw to touch ‘em. She drew her paw back really quick and looked at it, and then she touched ‘em again. This time, she started chirpin’ and fell over and rolled all over mommys socklet covered feetsies. Mommy said it was sooooooooo cute. It sure doesn’t take much to make mommys happy.

Raena laying on the nip mat after her spay day

We’ve been asked about the size of Raena’s incision by several

people as well as how it’s healin’ up. The incision is about an inch

in length and as you can see, it’s healing well. She is purretty bruised

up there as well as the 2 teets that were shaved, but everything’s looking great.

(Click photo to bigify.)

Are you makin’ fun of me sissy?

Nope Raena, just tellin’ everypawdy how you reacted to mommys socklets.

Dezi and Raena chatting over the cat scratchers

Oh sissy, those socklets are so soft. Did you tell everypawdy ‘bout our other surprise?

No Raena me hasn’t had a chance too.

Well hurry up sissy, I had a blast didn’t you?

It was fun Raena, but me’s done it befur. It’s another one of those fursts fur you.

Raena posing in her harness on the small cat perch

Well I sure hope I’s gets to do it again. I’s better tell everypawdy what “it” is. I got to go outside fur a walk. Yep, sure ‘nuff, I went fur a walk. As ya’ll know, none of da harnesses we have will fit me, so mommy wouldn’t take me very far in da stroller, cuz she couldn’t secure me. Fur some reason, she thinks we oughtta be tethered into da stroller even ifin it’s zipped closed. Somethin’ ‘bout our safety. Anyways, she did look fur a harness dat would fit me at da pet store and Wallyworld. But alas, they didn’t have a size to fit me dat would work. And altho’ I’s gonna be a big girly, I’s not so big right now. And mommy can’t put mines trainin’ on hold till I get big enuff to fit into a harness. So, mommy began to search da innernet to find a harness we could afford and dat would fit me. There was some money left over from getting’ da car a/c fixed dat was ‘posed to go to fixin’ at least one of da windows. Da mechanic’s been so busy he hasn’t had a chance to look at it and tell us how much it would cost to fix it. So after checkin’ with our Angels, they said mommy could use it fur whatever she needed. So after much deliberation, mommy ordered me a harness of mines very own.

Raena outside in her walking harness

Ifin ya’ recall, da last time I’s had on a harness, mommy took me to da VET to be tortured. Needless to say, when mines harness arrived and mommy put it on me, I wasn’t a happy girly at furst. But then, mommy put a harness on sis Dezi too, and I’s felt a little more comfy. Y, In no time at all, I was playin’ and chasin’ sissy ‘round. Mommy said she was so purroud of me and then she hooked me up to a long string and picked me up. And out da door we went. Mommy put me down on da sidewalk and let me explore a little. She wouldn’t let me go waller in da dirt, somethin’ ‘bout da doggies out here and poopin’ everywhere. But she did let me walk up and down da sidewalk. What fun I had. Did you enjoy your walk too sissy?

 Dezi outside in walking harness

Yeah Raena me did. And me’s glad you like your new harness. It does look good on you.

Y, Fanky you sissy, you look bootyful too.

Fanks Raena. You know, we are so blest to have a home and a mommy to take care of us. Our little outside adventure was lots of fun, but it was even better cuz we got to come back inside where it’s safe. There are lots of kitties dat live outside all da time. They don’t get to go inside when somethin’ scares them or it gets cold or wet or too hot or fur any reason. They don’t have a mommy or warm bed. Y, They don’t even know when they’ll eat next, and fur sure don’t get treats like us. You know feral cats didn’t choose dat life, it was forced upon them by humans. Da lucky ones have caretakers who look after them and feed them and try to get them medical treatment when needed. Da really lucky ones learn to trust humans and eventually find furever homes. But most of them…they live their very short lives outside and never know what it’s like to have a home or mommy and daddy to luv and purrtect them. They have to fight fur everythin’ and lots of peeps are mean to them and don’t want them ‘round.

Dezi laying in cat tree in new harness

Fankfully there are purrograms like TNR dat can help stop those kitties from constantly havin’ babies. And by doin’ dat, da colonies become smaller and more manageable. And dat hopefully means dat da mean peeps won’t be so mean to them. Even so, there are lots of places dat don’t know ‘bout TNR purrograms or da benefit of spayin’ and neuterin’ even their pets. A little education goes a long way toward fixing the purroblem. Peeps takin’ respawnsiblity fur their own pets and having them spayed or neutered and keepin’ them inside will also help. ‘Member me said ferals are a result of human abandonment. When you adopt a pet, it’s fur life. It’s not till da new wears off, or kitty grows up, or you get bored, or you get allergies, or pregnant, or any other reason. It’s fur LIFE.

Everypawdy can help even ifin you don’t have a feral colony in your neighborhood. You can donate money, food, supplies and your time. Lookin’ after a  feral colony is a day in and day out job dat is offen done by one or two dedicated peeps. There’s no glory in it, and once peeps find out what’s involved, volunteers offen disappear.

A caretaker must be there fur those kitties every day. Even on da days when you feel sick or tired or whatever other excuse. Da truth is, ifin a colonies caretaker doesn’t show up, kitties don’t eat. They go hungry. Me knows most of you don’t know what it’s like to really be hungry, me doesn’t. Mommy makes sure we girls are taken care of and always have food, but me has seen hungry, and it’s not nice. Alley Cat Allies has a website where you can find oppurrtunities near you to help. We purray fur all da feral and abandoned cats and their caretakers. We fank all of you who devote so much to those kitties. And our hope and purrayer is dat someday, there are no feral colonies cuz all kitties have furever homes.

 Raena sits in mommys lap

Oh sissy I sure hope God answers our purrayers.

Let’s wrap this up and maybe mommy will take us fur a walk or stroll today. We are so blest to have a pawsum mommy, home, furiends and our Angels. Fank you all fur your luv, support, purrayers and help. You are all in our purrayers every day. ‘Member to take a minute today and everyday to give thanks fur da blessings in your life. We’re joinin’ da Kitties Blue fur Sunday Selfies. We hope you all have a wonderful day.
