Blest Sunday: The Smallest Blessings Are The Best

Dezi:  MeOW  Hissssssssss (Dezi heaves and convulses atop the liberty cat tree and stretches her neck

Mommy A:  Dezi, Come down from there!!! Use a piddle pad baby. Don’t hurl all over the place. I haven’t even had a cup of coffee yet.

Raena:  (Raena sits in front of the bathroom looking down the hall towards Dezi heaving on the cat tree) And I’s not had brekky yet sissy. (Raena runs back to the kitchen where mommy’s preparing breakfast and her coffee and lays down in front of the fridge)

Dezi:  (Dezi heaves one last time and out comes a hair ball. She then climbs down from the cat tree and sits at the edge of the kitchen watching mommy prepare breakfast. Dezi cleans her paws and face)  Hurry mommy, me’s hungry. And, it’s Blest Sunday. We’ve got lots to do today.

Raena stand on small perch with front paws on cat tree sniffing

Raena:  I’s bet you are hungry sissy. Wasn’t that dinner there with that hairball? You know, when humans hurl after their meals it’s a sickness.

Dezi: It’s not the same fur kitties Raena. But you’re right, it is a sickness. We have no way of knowin’ ifin any of our furiends might be dealin’ with this or not, but ifin you are, purrlease stop. You are luvved and Blest and purrfect just the way you are. (The girls watch mommy grab some papertowels and cleaner and head for the cat tree and hairball mess)  Mommy, clean it up later, me’s hungry now.

Raena:  You should’a waited till after mommy served brekky and got in the sittin’ chair sissy. Now we have to wait till she cleans up. We’re never gonna get brekky now. It’ll be more like brunch. You really should use the piddle pads; clean up’s much quicker.

Dezi lays on scratcher and licks paw

Dezi:  Whatever. Anyways, as me was meowin’, it’s Blest Sunday. We luv countin’ our Blessings ‘round here, don’t we Raena.

Raena:  Sure nuff sissy. We saw this post on facebook the other day that was listin’ Blessings. Not the big ones that peeps normally think ‘bout, but the every day Blessings, like a roof over our heads and food in our bellies and the likes.

Dezi:  Yep Raena, sometimes the littlest Blessings are actually the bestest Blessings. So many peeps and anipals don’t have a place to call home, and so many of us take ours fur granted. A new season the bad kitties show just started up and while we were watchin’ an episode the other night, me was reminded just how Blest we are. Even tho’ me hurled all over the place this meownin’ befur mommy even had a cup of coffee, me never once thought she might get rid of me.

Raena lays on the liberty cat tree

Raena:  That’s true sissy. I’s wish every kitty could have the security we do. Maybe we should do somethin’ fur mommy. You know, to show her how much we luvs and ‘purreciate her. I’s wish we could throw a pawrty or somethin’ fur mommy and all our furiends. A huge get together where everypawdy could laff and have fun. And spend a day not worryin’ ‘bout anythin’. Wouldn’t that be cool?

Dezi:  It would Raena. But, since that’s not likely to happen, we should just remind all our furiends how much we luv and ‘purreciate them. Mommy says you never know what tomorrow may bring, so you should tell those in your life how much you luv them as offen as you can.

Raena sits on liberty tree looking back, selfie

Raena:  I’s luvs hearin’ mommy tell us she luvs us, don’t you sissy? I’s could hear those 3 words all the time and never get tired of it. Meowin’ of luvs and ‘purreciation, we wanted to meow fanky fank you to awnty Vonda fur the green papers. She told mommy to get her somethin’ special to eat now that she has her new teethies. I’s can’t wait to see what mommy gets cuz I’s sure she’s gonna share at least a few bites with us.

Dezi up close and personal

Fank you fur not bein’ mad that me hurled everywhere, mommy.

Dezi:  Me hopes she gets somethin’ tasty Raena. Anyways, meowin’ of tasty, we should wrap this up and go eat brekky. As we do each week, we’d like to remind you all to take a minute today and every day to give Thanks fur the Blessings in your lives. And we’d like to Fank you all fur bein’ Blessings in ours.

Service Cats: Tips For Moving With Cats

Raena and me have meowed it over and we’d luv to make a move, so ifin anypawdy has a shed, spare room or even a rental property you could spare, till we could get on our paws feet let us know. Anyways, let’s get the business outta the way and get on with today’s post.

Dezi laying in cat tree in new harness

The following post will be written in human English for reader and translator ease. Our Service Cat posts aren’t intended to be an all inclusive Training Manual but rather Tips, Tricks and Techniques used/developed by mommy A thru her many years of animal training, cats in purr-ticular. And to offer insight into your questions about Everything Feline. Always remember, successful Training is all about Repetition and Rewards.

Preperations:

Thanks Dezi. I’z actually loved moving from one place to another. New windows to look out and wildlife to see; and lots of new hiding places to explore. But, us kitties aren’t always fond of change, so moving can be a bit scary. I’z here to help and give you Tips to make the move as stress free as possible for you and kitty. Remember to have a Decompression Room available so kitty can escape the hustle and bustle, especially if you have an already skittish kitty. We also highly recommend Harness Training kitty before you leave/move. We recommend you read the Harness Training post as it also gives Tips for driving with kitty.

Visit kitty’s V-E-T and get a copy of kitty’s records. These should be packed with your other “important” papers. Depending on where you’re moving from and to, you may need to keep out proof of kitty’s current vaccinations. We also recommend you take a gallon of water from your tap unless you give kitty bottled water. Water tastes different in different areas of the country, and we suggest a slow switch; just as you would when changing kitty’s food. You’ll also need a gallon of water for the actual drive/move.

The Destination:

It’s always great when you have the new place picked out in advance, but kitty will do just fine in a motel room with you while you find your new home as long as you pack appropriately. It’s also a good idea to check out the V-E-Ts in the new area beforehand. With the internet, that’s not hard to do. Check reviews, call and speak with the office, and if you know people in the area, ask for referrals. Of course you don’t want kitty’s first experience in the new place to be a trip to the V-E-T, but you also don’t want to find yourself in a new area with an emergency and no clue where to go.

Dezi sits in amazon box

Packing Up:

As I’z mentioned last week, most kitties love a good box. So, don’t be stingy with your moving boxes, let kitty investigate and explore as you pack up each room. Keep out a few of kitty’s favorite toys, a mat or bed, favorite food and water bowl/fountain and a heavily scented towel. Remember, your smell/scent is calming to kitty. You’ll also want to leave kitty’s carrier(s) out and open so kitty can get comfortable. That heavily scented towel will go into kitty’s carrier/ptu when it’s time to load up and move. These prized items will be the last things packed up and should go into an overnight bag instead of a box. Think of them the way you would your own toothbrush and other daily grooming products. If kitty is on meds of any kind, keep those out and easily accessible as well. These items will be in kitty’s Decompression Room at both ends of the move.

Lexi sits on cat tree looking back

What? You wanna pack this too now?

The day is here and the moving van or if you can afford them, the movers are right outside. If possible, close kitty in their Decompression Room and place a note on the door alerting everyone that kitty is inside and the door is not to be opened. If that’s not an option, go ahead and put kitty into their carrier/ptu and place them in a bathroom out of the way. Mommy likes to poke her head in once in a while and say hey and remind us that she loves us. You don’t have to do this, but it is calming and reassuring since we can hear the raucous outside. Again, no matter where you put kitty(ies), place a large note that alerts everyone to their presence. We have been known to escape a carrier or two. Once all the boxes have been loaded and you’re finally ready to go, load up kitties safely in the vehicle with you.

The Drive:

For safety and legal reasons we make this statement: Kitty should be in his/her carrier/ptu and be secured by a seat belt. It is true, this is the best and safest option. Now we’ll tell you how we and mommy do it. First and foremost, harness and leash kitty. The harness is a safety precaution as well as calming, if properly harnessed trained. I’z hated not being able to see out. I’z could be quite happy in the carrier, so long as I’z could see what was going on outside, as witnessed by the photo below. Dezi couldn’t care less about what’s going on around her so long as mommy’s close. I’z hear Raena is like me and wants to see everything. If you’re alone or the driver, we don’t recommend allowing kitty to be in your lap, but you’ll have to be the judge for yourself. Mommy makes sure that we’re strapped in the seat belt with her. And, our stroller is a great height for seeing out the windows.

Lexi rides in her travel carrier home from BlogPaws Nashville

When making long trips, we recommend putting a litterbox in the back floorboard for kitty to use. When you stop to eat, gas up and refill drinks, make sure kitty gets food and water and the opportunity to use the litterbox if they’re crated. If kitty is free roam in the car, Do Not open doors or windows until kitty has been safely secured. If you’re driving a moving van, the litterbox will go in the passengers side floorboard. Do Not dine in and leave kitty in the vehicle alone. If you have to go inside to order, crack the windows and lock the doors. Return to the vehicle as soon as possible. Mommy likes to talk to us about where we’re going and how wonderful the new place will be. She also sings to us and tells us how much she loves us and how proud of us she is.

Remember, YOU are our home, our safe place and our everything. Music has a calming effect on most animals. You don’t have to sing yourself, you can use the radio to soothe everyone’s nerves. Do Not use this time to change kitty’s food and do pick up some of kitty’s favorite treats. Kitty may or may not eat during the trip, and may or may not use the litterbox, but both should be offered. Mommy likes to take a medium sized syringe so she can give us water if we’re not drinking it from the bowl. You don’t want kitty to get dehydrated. If your move requires more than one day to travel, make sure you choose a pet friendly motel/hotel for your overnight rest stops. Check the rooms before releasing kitty for anything that might be a danger. We’ve found poison traps for mice, loose nails, and peeling paint in even some of the nicest motels. Before you leave the motel/hotel, pick up after kitty so that they’ll continue to be pet friendly. The same goes fur those of you with dogs…scoop woofies poop.

Your New Home:

Once you’ve finally arrived at your new home, set up kitty’s Decompression Room first (Your bedroom is ideal for this). Ideally, kitty should stay in the carrier in the bathroom until you’ve set up your bed, their litterbox, food and water and a few toys. Then you can take kitty in, set the carriers down with the doors opens and go about the business of unpacking. Mommy recommends putting some catnip or silvervine on the floor/cat bed/mat/scratcher. Until all items are off the moving trucks and into the house, kitty should remain in the Decompression Room with the door closed. Don’t forget to place a note on the door alerting all to kitty’s presence and not to open the door.

Raena sniffs box

Once everything’s in the new house and the movers if hired, are gone, open the door of the Decompression Room and allow kitty to come out and explore. Sprinkle a little catnip or silvervine around the house for kitty to find. Mommy likes to take this time to place the litterbox and food and water in the space that will be their new home. During the first few hours, she will take us to the spot where the litterbox is now housed and puts us in it. She calls it homing in. We never stay in the box, but we also never forget where it’s located. This is extremely important for older kitties or blind kitties.

Over the next few days to week, the house will start to look more like home. Kitty will locate new favorite spots and windows. Keep an eye out for these spots and place cat trees and perches in these spots. Give kitty extra love and attention and extra play time, it will help reassure kitty and relieve stress. Talk calmly to kitty as you unpack and set up your new home. Let kitty explore the boxes just as he/she did when you first packed them up. Take frequent unpacking breaks just to pet kitty and offer a treat or two. Moving is stressful for everybody, but it can be successful if you remain calm. Before you know it, everyone will acclimate and it’ll be old hat. Routines will be back to normal, or at least a new normal, and kitty will rule their new domain just as kitties should.

Dezi sits in chewy box

Kitty’s Overnight Bag:

Kitty’s overnight bag should contain enough of kitty’s regular food to last four days. You never know what might happen. You’ll also need a food dish or paper plates. A water bowl or fountain and a gallon of water from the tap of the old house. A few of kitty’s favorite toys and a fresh package of catnip or silvervine (whichever your cat prefers). A gallon baggy of extra litter and litter scoop (mommy always forgets the scoop) MOL. Any meds or supplements kitty may need or be taking such as probiotics, Rx meds, food toppers, etc.. Spoon, can opener, paper towels or napkins for messes. A wash cloth and towel (you never know). Kitties favorite treats (not the cheap stuff). A small cardboard or hanging scratcher. Kitty’s vaccination records and rabies tag if kitty doesn’t wear it (copy, the originals should be with your “important papers”). A folder with a list of emergency numbers, V-E-T’s name and number, any conditions kitty may have, any allergies kitty may have, food and litter preferences, your cell number, old and new address, kitty’s name and any nicknames he/she responds to.

Chatting Cats: Hide And Seek

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. I’s gotta tell ya’, I’s was so happy that we actually got to visit a few of our furiends yesfurday. There was a break in the storm so I’s went to find sis Dezi so we could get mommy to help us with that opposable thumb thing. Ifin any of ya’ have actually seen our paws, then you know, the keys on those silly keyboards are way to small, so we have to have a little help. Anyways, I’s found sissy UTB (under the bed) and told her it was safe to come out. I’s told her the stupid noisy lawn crew had furinally got rained out and left and the storm had let up.

Dezi lays on scratcher

Yeah Raena, like me couldn’t hear it fur me’s self?. Do you think me’s deaf or somethin’?

‘Course not sissy, but you were still unner the bed even tho the noises had stopped. I’s just knew you wanted to see what our furiends were up too just as much as I’s did.

Did you ever think that me may have still been unner the bed cuz me wanted a little purr-ivacy or space? You know, me’s a mature ladycat and sometimes me needs a little time to me’s self.

Curious Raena sits on cat tree

What fur sissy? Why would you ever wanna be alone? I’s never wanna be away from mommy or you fur that matter. I’s just luvs ya’ll sooooooo much.

Dezi, gets lap loving

Don’t even think ‘bout huggin’ on me, Raena. Me luvs to be ‘round mommy and even you; but, that doesn’t mean me has to do it all the time. Ifin mommy had really needed me, all she had to do is call fur me. She knows that. And since you can’t seem to pull yourself away from her, then you could’a called me ifin mommy couldn’t have. You know, you’re always in the middle of everythin’. Mommy couldn’t even get in the fridge to get the milk fur her cheater mac last night cuz you were where you always are, right in the middle of the floor. You know our fridge door opens backwards. Mommy did it on purr-puss to help keep the furs out.

Raena lays on kitchen floor in front of fridge

I’s only there sissy, in case mommy needs me. I’s don’t wanna miss anythin’. And, mommy could get in the fridge, all she had to do is open the door. I’s really good at squishin’ down unner the door.

Sure Raena. That may have been true when you were smaller, but you don’t flatten much anymore. You know how much you luv the groceries. Girl, you’re hiney’s gonna be the size of Texas befur long.

Raena walks toward mommy and the camera

Is not. That’s not very nice sissy. Have you seen yours in a mirror lately? You can put away the groceries too ya’ know. You’re always tryin’ to steal mine’s noms after you eat all of yours. Anyways, I’s moved so mommy could finish makin’ her cheater mac. I’s even got a bite of cheddar. I’s really luvs cheese, it’s so tasty.

And fattenin’. that’s why you don’t fit unner the door anymore. MOL

Anyways…as I’s was meowin’ earlier, befur you so rudely innerupted me. After I’s found ya’ unner the bed, we went to get mommy to help us visit our furiends and there she was, on the fone yellin’ at someone ‘bout how they be lyin’ and robbin’ us blind. I’s thought we were never gonna get her to hang up the fone. Hmmmpht

Dezi lays on cat scratcher

Well she did Raena, and we furinally visited some of our furiends. Hopefully we can visit more today.

I’s sure hope so sissy. Ya’ know, we should tell everypawdy ‘bout awnty Paulette’s new book. We’ve not read it, so we can’t actually review it, but she’s had a few best seller’s and more ‘purrtantly, she uses all the profits to help rescue doggies. It’s called A Different Kind of Angel, and you can check it out here. Keep up the good work awnty Paulette. And did you hear that we’re gonna have a play date with our furiend Prancie soon? I’s luvs play dates, don’t you?

Me luvs anythin’ that takes your focus off me fur a while Raena. Bring on the play dates!!! Let’s wrap this up, me hears a rumblin’ off in the distance.

Okay sissy. Are you gonna play with me?

Sure Raena, let’s play hide n’ seek. Me will hide and you count to a hunnerd and then come find me. Close you eyes and start countin’ now.

Raena sits on the liberty cat tree

This is gonna be so much fun, sissy. (Raena closes her eyes and starts counting) One, two, one hunnerd. Ready or not here I’s come!!!

Tell All Tuesday: Weruva Slide N’ Serve

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. We’re growin’ fins and gills and scales. Not really, but it sure feels like we are. Fur sure we’re feelin’ bored and blue. They say that’s what happens when you don’t get enuff sunshine and happy days.

Dezi and Raena together

          They do Raena? Who’s they?

I’s don’t know sissy, I’s don’t question mommy. And she said they say, so that’s good enuff fur me. She also said they say that daylight lamps and artificial sun can help with the thunderstorm blues.

Dezi and Raena play

Well Raena, guess it’s a good thing we’ve got one of those daylight lamps. Altho’, me doesn’t think that’s why mommy bought it all those years ago. Me thinks it had somethin’ to do with usin’ less ‘lectricity. Me’s purretty sure a little exercise might help too. You know, like the kind you’ve been gettin’ chasin’ that fly ‘round the house?

Raena sits on cat tree

Where’d the fly go?

I’s tellin’ ya’ sissy, he’s multiplyin’. I’s know I’s caught him more than once. Y, I’s even caught him on the fly once. MOL Get it? I’s caught the fly on the fly?

Oh yeah Raena, you’re a laff a minute. Anyways, we need to tell everypawdy ‘bout these new nom pouches from Weruva that we got to try. Ifin you’re a pate’ kitty, lissen up, cuz we think you’ll luv these. They’re called Slide N’ Serve pate’ and they come in 8 different flavors including fish free, chicken free and mixed proteins and 2 different sizes, 2.8 ounce and 5.5 ounce pouches.  We received a variety pack with 2 of each flavor inside along with a couple of fun crinkle balls. Fanky fanks fur the crinkle balls, we luvs playin’ with ‘em. Pawrently mommy’s old eyes missed the whole pate’ thing, cuz we don’t really like pate’. But, mommy thought we oughtta give ‘em a try anyways. Since we don’t like fish, mommy opened us a bag of just plain chicken and slid it onto our dinner plate. It literally slid outta the pouch in 1 solid piece. Not a lick of gravy in sight. Anyways, mommy cut the blob in half and put it on another plate fur me. She used the spoon to separate it a little and served it to us fur dinner. We tend to eat heartier at dinner time, so mommy’s always tryin’ to introduce new noms durin’ that meal. You’d think she’d learn by now, but I’s guessin’ this won’t be the last time we see somethin’ new on our dinner plates. Mommy says it’s good to offur kitty a variety of noms so we don’t get too picky. Hmmmpht  What does she know. Ifin we’re eatin’ good, why mess with purrfection?

Uh Raena, me thinks you might be headin’ off on a tangent, let’s get back to the Slide N’ Serves and Weruva. Ifin you’re a recycler, you’re gonna luv Weruva’s pawrtnership with Terracycle. All Weruva pouches including, BFF, Cats in the Kitchen and Dogs in the Kitchen are now recyclable. All you have to do is visit Terracycle.com/weruva and fill out the handy form. They’ll send you a postage paid envelope to put your empty pouches in and mail back to them.

Weruva Slide N’ Serve Chicken pate’

That’s great sissy. I’s know lots of our furiends luvs goin’ green. You know, I’s joked earlier ‘bout mommy slippin’ us new and different noms at dinnertime, but good nutrition isn’t a jokin’ matter. Us kitties are obligate carnivores which means we must have animal based protein to survive and thrive. And, it’s not always easy to find good quality foods without all the unnecessary grains, vegetables and starches that we kitties don’t need. So, that’s why mommy’s always on the look out fur quality options. We don’t wanna stop with just keepin’ us healthy, we want you all to be healthy too. We try all these things so we can let ya’ll know ‘bout options you might like but haven’t tried. Just cuz we don’t like pate’ doesn’t mean all cats are the same. We’ve got lots of furiends who luvs a good pate’, and this would be another good one to add to your rotation.

We received the Weruva Slide N’ Serve Variety pack in exchange fur our honest opinion. As always, we tell it like we see it. Weruva is not responsible for the opinions expressed in this post unless otherwise stated. We only bring products we use or have tried and feel would be of interest to you, our readers and friends.

No Way!!! Me sees the lawn crew. Me’s outta here.

That’s true Raena. You can pick up your own Weruva Slide N’ Serve pouches at a pet store near you or online at Chewy or amazon. Chewy has them listed at $17.99 (2.8 oz) or $24.99 (5.5 oz) fur a case of 12. Uh Raena, me saw the lawn crew pull up. Let’s wrap this up, me has intruders to guard against.

Raena plays with crinkle ball

Sure thing sissy. I’s just wanna add, that altho’ we didn’t like the Slide N’ Serve pouches, we donated them to our furiends at the Kitty Motel, and they luvs ‘em. We hear they scarfed these down like there was no tomorrow and asked fur more. So, ifin you like pate’, give these a try.
