Service Cat: What To Look For

Meowllo everypawdy, welcome to miserable Monday. It’s not miserable, we just like callin’ it that cuz it’s da end of da weekend. Anyways, you ask and we’re gonna tell. Today’s posty will be in the human English flavor so it can be translated and/or easily read by anybody as it’s one of me’s educational postys. We were asked many times while searchin’ for a new kitty just what qualities or traits would make a good Service kitty? Is there a particular breed that is predisposed to being good Service kitties? And we’ve been asked many times, “I already have a cat at home, can she be trained as a Service Cat for me/my child/etc.”. And we even had an application turned down by a rescue who didn’t want their kitties to be working cats. We don’t blame the rescue, we blame ignorance. But me will save that for part 2.

Now remember Service Animals are different than Therapy Animals, Companion Animals and Pets. For a complete description please see our Service Animal page in the menu tab or click here. And Please, DO NOT pass off your Therapy animal, Companion animal or Pet as a Service Animal. And remember, there are always exceptions to every rule. You are dealing with living, breathing, thinking sentient beings. The amount of time you spend with an animal will also play a role in their personality. Alright, let’s jump into this.

Let’s answer the last question first. Mommy believes any cat can be trained. So, if you already have a cat that you are bonded too, then YES, he/she can be trained as a Service Cat. The operative word is “Bonded”. A cat will be most closely bonded with it’s primary caregiver. If you don’t have a cat or aren’t bonded with the cat in your home then we do recommend getting a kitten. Kittens have very short attention spans, and see training as an adventure. We recommend adopting a kitten under the age of 8 months. For the purpose of this article we are going to focus on a young kitten between the ages of 6 to 8 weeks.

Dezi in her work harness on cat ledge

So, you’ve decided you need a Service animal and you want it to be a cat. Keep in mind cats are fairly small animals so there are limits to what they can do. Don’t expect your Service Cat to perform tasks contrary to their nature or size. Also keep in mind that the ADA doesn’t recognize them as Service Animals. For the full definition please see our Service Animal page. Okay, you’ve thought it over, looked into the laws (state/country and federal) and you’ve determined a cat is the right animal for your needs; where do you find one? Most likely you will have to train the kitten yourself, so decide what training method you want to use and Be Faithful with it. Training is repetition, day in and day out. You can find your Service Kitty in Training anywhere. Rescues, shelters, breeders and neighborhood strays are where you start. We do not recommend ferals or semi-ferals as too much training time is lost just getting kitty to trust humans.

Things to keep in mind when searching for your Service Cat:

  • How big will kitty be when he/she grows up?

  • Is kitty chatty or quiet?

  • Does kitty appear to be outgoing and confident or shy and withdrawn?

  • Will you need kitty to travel outside your home to perform his/her duties?

  • Does kitty have long fur or short?

  • If long, can you provide daily grooming?

  • Does kitty appear healthy? Get kitty checked by a VET ASAP after adopting!

Knowing a little about the breed of kitty will help answer some of these questions. Remember, breed profiles can tell you a lot, but kitty’s environment will also play a role in kitty’s personality. For instance, Oriental breeds like Siamese are known to be very vocal and slender. Persians, while beautiful, have very long fur that requires a lot of maintenance. The generic Tabby cat is known to be hardy with few health issues. So it’s best to check breed profiles before you start your physical search. Knowing what tasks you need kitty to perform will help determine which kitty would be right for you and fit into your home and lifestyle. A mixed kitty will exhibit some of the traits of it’s purebred ancestors, so use some common sense and choose the best fit for your needs. Or better yet, let kitty choose you.

We were asked if Ragdolls made better Service kitties than other breeds. The general answer is No. Sis Lexi was one of mommy’s best Service Cats and she wasn’t a Ragdoll at all. And mommy didn’t start her search looking for a Ragdoll, that’s just where we ended up. God had a plan and Raena is it. For the tasks mommy needs performed, Ragdolls do make an excellent choice because of our size and we are considered “soft pawed”. That means we don’t use our claws. Since one of the tasks mommy needs is massage, she says it’s nice to not have claws digging into her head and body. For those of you who are new to our blog, mommy has had several Service kitty’s thru’ the years. The first was Shad, a Persian, and then Devon the Himalayan, sis Lexi a Mau, Lucky, a Siamese mix, and Ransom, a Ragamuffin. Mommy says the best Service kitty is the kitty who wants to be with you.

So, you need kitty to accompany you outside the home. Look for a confident and outgoing kitty. By confident and outgoing we don’t mean the one that’s bouncing off the walls, but rather a kitty that seems to be interested in new things and curious but also enjoys quiet time with you. Altho’ you can train shy kitty to be outgoing and confident, it’s easier for most people to just start with one. A Service animal must be under the control of their handler at all times and may not disturb others while performing their tasks. So while kitty is in public there must be no excessive meowing, hissing, scratching, trying to escape, etc.. Kitty must also be leash trained and comfortable in their harness. We highly recommend a pet stroller if kitty needs to accompany you. Kitty stays safe but still has access to you. We are very capable of alerting mommy to a Syncope incident from inside the stroller.

Mommy is home with us 24 hours a day so she doesn’t really look for specifics cuz she knows that kitty will act a bit differently in our home than it does in a rescue, shelter or breeders house. And she has been training animals, specifically cats for many years. We Do Not recommend the hybrid breeds like Savannahs, Bengals, etc. for Service Cats. Altho’ they are very smart and easily trainable, generally people with disabilities don’t have the ability or space to properly take care of them. Sex isn’t important as your Service kitty should be spayed or neutered at the appropriate age. Kitty will also be required to be up to date on their vaccinations if they accompany you outside the home. And please inform the rescue, shelter or breeder that you intend to train kitty to be a Service cat.

ConCats, you’ve found the perfect kitty and brought he/she home. What in the world do you do now? Where do you start? Mommy calls this time “Bonding with Kitty” time. At 6 to 8 weeks, kitty is too small to really to do much; but during this time you can build a strong relationship with kitty and focus some of their natural behaviors that you will turn into tasks later. Mommy prefers a love reward system as opposed to treats simply because there are tasks we are required to perform where treats would be impossible to get to. And because unlike dogs, cats aren’t ruled by their tummies. This is why bonding is so important. Don’t get me wrong, mommy does employ treat training on occasion, but usually for those really complicated and detailed tasks.

Well me thinks me will wrap it up fur today and let ya’ digest all of this. We will cover the bonding process and turning instinct into tasks next time. If ya’ have any questions about what we’ve covered today or about choosing, training, or Service cats in general, leave them in the comments and we will get them answered in a following post.

 Dezi and Raena together

On the newsy side, we have 2 pawsum digital cameras, thank you awnties; but the memory cards are full. Because of the nature of catputers and crashin’ mommy refuses to erase said cards because they contain fotos of sis Lexi. So until we can afford to buy more memory cards we won’t be posting any “new” fotos or videos. We hate this as much as you do cuz Raena is growin’ like a weed and we’re in the getting comfortable stage of our relationship. But alas, no money means no money and Raena has to go to da VET fur her furst round of kitty vacs this Furiday.

Do you have any questions about today’s posty?

Is there something you would like us to expand on?

Welcome To Your New Home

Meowllo everypawdy, me knows you all are ‘xcited and ready to meet me’s new sisfur, but me is a chatty kitty and so you’re gonna have to hear da whole story okay? Okay. As mommy and me told ya’ yesfurday, we found this little kitty from a newspaper ad. Actually, mommy was callin’ ‘bout a whole different set of kitties, but by da time da lady called us back, those kitties was all gone. Mommy thought we had missed out yet again. But da lady gave us another nummer and told mommy to call cuz they had kitties too. Well mommy called and called and furinally 3 days later somepawdy answered. Mommy got all da infurmation and then we purrayed about it. Da next day mommy called them back and said yes. Of course in da meantime me didn’t really have a clue ‘bout what was goin’ on, so it was life as usual fur this little queen. Okay, maybe me’s not so little, but ‘member, sis Lexi made me da queen when she left. Anyways…

Dezi the Queen laying on the cat tree sporting her crown

A couple weeks later, Hug Your Cat Caturday to be exact, me’s life was turned upside down. Dat’s right, Hug Your Cat Caturday. Me had plans fur mommy dat was gonna last all day long and into da night, but mommy up and left me late in da afternoon. Can you believe it? Me sure couldn’t. Anyhow, somepawdy came by and picked mommy up so she left me to lounge ‘round da cat tree and snooze. Me had da afternoon off. She was gone fur da longest time. Me’s dinner time came and went and no sign of mommy. Me was beginnin’ to wonder ifin she was gonna leave me to starve, but furinally she showed up. She came in all flustered and rushin’ ‘round and sayin’ she had to go up and feed Buddy real quick and get things all set up here fur da baby.

Baby me thought. What baby? Me loudly meowed dat Buddy could wait and me didn’t want any babies here. Me’s heard purrlenty of ya’ ‘round blogville talk ‘bout da sticky fingers and all these babies have and me doesn’t want any pawrt of dat. Mommy set sis Lexi’s travel carrier on da chair and went about getting da play pen set up. Me calls it sis Lexi’s travel carrier cuz it’s what she used to travel in befur we got da stroller. And lots of ya’ saw her sittin’ in it on our trip home from BlogPaws last year. Well here, let me just show ya’.

Didn’t she look happy? Dat’s why me calls it sis Lexi’s travel carrier. Anyways, mommy set it in da chair and set up da play pen and…Hey, mommy, why are you puttin’ litter in dat little box?

Well honey the baby can’t reach the big boxes.

Baby? Uh, mommy, sis Lexi’s travel carrier is makin’ noises. What is dat? (Dezi inches over and smells the carrier) YUCK!!!!! Mommy, sis Lexi’s travel carrier smells like pee pee. Did you have a accident or somethin’? Would dat lady not stop and let you go to da human pawdee box?

No honey I didn’t have an accident. It’ll be fine, I’ll explain it all to you later, okay? I’ve got to go feed Buddy and get you some dinner too.

Me doesn’t know ‘bout Buddy mommy, but me’s about to starve to death. You know it’s way passed me’s dinnertime and me hasn’t had anythin’ to eat since those treats right befur you left.

Dezi stands back and sniffs Lexi's travel carrier

Yes dear I know. Just give me a few more minutes.

Uh, mommy da carrier’s getting’ louder. What is dat? (Dezi runs UTB while mommy finishes setting up the playpen, and then she hears mommy yell from down the hall…)

Alright Sweetie, I’ll be right back, I’m gonna go give Buddy his dinner. (mommy leaves and when she returns in 5 minutes, this is what she saw)

Dezi and RaenaBelle square off

Uh, mommy, what is dat, and why is it in me’s house? Do you know it yelled da whole time you were gone?  And dat pee pee smell? It’s dat thing mommy. ( Mommy snaps a photo and then fixes the girls dinner. She sets down Dezi’s plate and then one for the baby)

Yes Dezi, I know. That’s your new sisfur and helper, and my new Service kitty. I’m sorry she yelled the whole time I was gone, I didn’t think she would. She was quiet and peaceful the whole way home. And I’ll give her a bath after she eats some dinner, okay?. She had a bit of a rough start to life like you did baby. She’s never been outside of a cage and she was surrounded by huge dogs that peed everywhere. My nose and eyes were burnin’ and waterin’ after just a few minutes in that house.

RaenaBelle travels to her forever home in mommy's lap

Is dat why her eye is all matted and she’s got a snotty nose?

Kind of sweetheart. But don’t worry, she’s gonna be fine. She knew she was gonna be okay a few minutes after we left too. She slept most of the way home. Now I know you need a couple of days to adjust, but I expect you to get a grip soon and help me to start training her to be a good kitty okay Dezi? Dezi?

Hissssssssssssssssss Mommy, tell her to get away from me’s dinner.

Hey, you, get back. Don’t you know what Hissssss means?

RaenaBelle uses a scratcher for the first time

Dezi, her name isn’t hey you, it’s RaenaBelle Maycee High.

Oh mommy, you and your names. What are we supposed to call her? Surely you don’t want me to say da whole thing all da time, right?

No baby, we’re gonna call her Raena.

Why mommy? Me knows there’s a reason, so why?

RaenaBelle sleeps beside her mommy in the chair

Yes dear there’s a reason. Raena is the shortened form of Raanan which means ‘New Beginnings’. And that’s exactly what she is for us, a new beginning.

 RaenaBelle plays

Well mommy me’s just not so sure ‘bout all this, but me will give her a chance fur you. And fur all me’s furiends out there wonderin’ zactly how you say her name, it sounds like Ray-nah. Mommy just has to be different. And needless to say we didn’t get a bit of sleep her furst night here and not much da second either. Maybe it wasn’t all her fault, but dat’s a story fur another day. Let me tell ya’ dat girls got a set of lungs on her and she’s a chatty little thing. You think me’s chatty. Hmmpht Me’s got nuthin’ on her. And she’s fearless, and smart and she’s purretty enuff me supposes. Mommy gave her a bath so she don’t stink anymore so there’s dat. She’s got more energy than me’s seen in a while and she doesn’t back down when me threatens her either. Mommy says she’s a lot like me, specially in dat way. And she even tried to give mommy a head massage her second day here.

RaenaBelle pounces on a Jackson Galaxy rubber ball

But mostest ‘purrtantly, she luvs me’s mommy. She wants to be right with mommy everywhere. So maybe she ain’t dat bad after all. She saw da VET on Fursday when me did and she got a clean bill of health. Her eye and nose is somethin’ mommy be watchin’ to make sure it clears up on it’s own as it wasn’t serious enuff fur medicine at this time. She weighs a whole pound and a half and was born on April 21st. She’s a bi-color Ragdoll, but her points aren’t clear enuff to call yet. Mommy says she has flame patch on her ear just like me does. Another story fur another day.

RaenaBelle bunny kicks a chicken leg

Anyways, there ya’ have it. And this ain’t even half of what happened in da furst week. So me will give ya’ da 411 on how things be goin’ as we go okay? And yes, Raena will be chattin’ it up with ya’ll from time to time so you’ll get to know her too. And we’ll be tellin’ all ‘bout da trainin’ as it happens. Raena’s already finished trainin’ mommy to be crazy about her so, she should do really well when it comes her time to learn. We have no doubts God sent her to us. So whether you believe God did it, or sis Lexi did it, or whatever you choose to believe, we just hope like mommy said yesfurday, dat you all learn to luv her as much as we do. Me’s gotta go now and remind her dat me’s da queen and she’s da princess; and me was here furst.

Till da next time………………………….Be Blest!!!

Blest Sunday: Service Cats Never…

Well as you can see by da title of meez posty you are all in fur a service cat story today. And it all took place yesfurday. Really it started even afur we woke up, but we can’t really tell ya’ ‘bout sumfin’ we slept fru, right? MOL  So anyways, there we was all cozy and warm wiff da lectric blanky and down blanky and da fuzzy soft blanky me has suckled to not so soft anymore soundly sleepin’ and suddenly mommy sez, “Girls, we gotta get up now.” Even tho’ she spoke in dat soft wake us up voice, it thundered fru da silence of da meownin’ wiff it’s urgency. It was da gotta get up voice dat meant mommy had to visit da pawdee box room and fast. (Fur all our new readers, mommy can’t move anything below her neck in da meownin’ time till her muscles and nerves warm up. She can’t walk till she takes her medicine and it kicks in, so we are respawnsible fur gettin’ her movin’ and drivin’ da wheelchair to da pawdee box room when we wake up) So sis Lexi and me skipped stretchin’ and duin’ all we kuld to avoid steppin’ or pushin’ on mommys belly; sumfin’ you don’t wanna do when she needs to visit da facilities, started massagin’ hers arms and legs. When all of a sudden…well…

Dezi profiled on the cat tree lookin' back from the window

Sissy musta had da same urge as mommy cuz afur we kuld even blink she stood up, stomped on mommys belly and headed down da steps to da pawdee box room. Not cool sissy. Now mommy was turnin’ yellow; and a bit green wiff envy dat sissy at her age kuld still move so fast. Anyways, fankfully by dat time mommy’s arms was startin’ to move a bit. Me has never pushed mommy into da chair by meez self afur and she was still on hers back, so this was gunna be tricky. But me was gunna try. So mommy started to reach fur da bars to pull and me started pushin’ on mommys side. Oooooops, maybe not da bestest place to push cuz me thinks mommy turned another shade of yellow. And outta da blue Lexi came flyin’ back up da steps and right on to mommys tummy/bladder to help. A little girl power later and we was wheelin’ to da pawdee box room wiff a happy mommy. You can just use yous magination fur what might have gone on in there cuz we be purroper Belles and it ain’t pawlite to talk ‘bout such things in mixed company.

Anyways, afur ya’ know it we was headin’ down da hall to da kitchen so mommy kuld fix us bwekky and have her a cup of coffee. We always stop off and crack open da front door just so we can see outside. So mommy pulled da door open and da three of us peeked round and…”No Way!!!” All our eyes was big as dinner plates. Mommy quickly shut da door and slowly opened it again. And again da three of us peeked round da door to look out. OMC  S N O W!!! We all sat back in da chair and mommy sed, “Girls, we should just go back to bed.” We didn’t but it did sound like a good idea. Me hopped off da chair and onto da cat tree fur a closer inspection of da fallin’ white stuff as mommy made our bwekky. Sis Lexi went on into da dinin’ room and hopped on da table to wait fur her plate. She didn’t care at all ‘bout all da fallin’ snow. Anyways, mommy sed meez title was posed to be sumfin’ ‘bout da oopsies service cats sumtimes makes, but me sed Service Cats Never make oopsies. Bad idea or not, we must have meant to mush mommys bladder. We are cats after all, and cats always mean what they do, right?

We know you can't see da snow fallin' but it sure nuff is.
We know you can’t see da snow fallin’ but it sure nuff is.

Well snow and all weez very blest to have da warmth and coziness of our home and each other. We are also blest to have all of you. Fank you fur bein’ our furiends. Mommy still hasn’t finished meez Cardwood Derby car fur Cat Scouts. She got a reprieve and it’s gotta be finished and posted by this Furiday, so weez gunna be busy this week tryin’ to finish up. She made a real mess wiff meez furst box and weez now workin’ on box 3. Me hopes this one works cuz me dusn’t fink any of da neighbors have any more boxes we can have. Maybe meez posty shulda been ’bout mommy’s oopsies and not those of Service Cats.

Have you or your cats/anipals ever made a oopsie of sum kind furst thing in da meownin’?
