Shad, Mommy’s Original Service Cat pt. 2

Well mommy learned dat Shad could call fur help ifin it was needed. Now mommy was glad hers had never gotten onto Shad fur playin’ with da fone all those times. Mommy wondered what else Shad could do but mommy didn’t really know what all she needed. As bein’ disabled wus somethin’ mommy had never thought ’bout.  Well as me told you yesfurday mommy passes out quite a lot. Ifin hers raises both of hers arms above her head then hers fur sure gunna pass out. So ever time she takes a shower and washes hers hair, down she goes. MOL  Well of course any of you’s dat have a kitty knows dat you can’t go to da pawdee box room fur anythin’ alone.  And well Shad and mommy was no different. Anytime mommy went to da pawdee box room Shad was hot on hers heels. Shad had been sittin’ on da hooman pawdee watchin’ mommy take showers fur years, and now dat mommy wus passin’ out, Shad was still der observin’ it all. As mommy would start to pass out hers would grab hold of da shower curtain or shower bar, or anythin’ else hers could tryin’ not to fall. But alas, she would end up in da tub with new bruises and bangs and a nose full of water. Til one day…..

 

Mommy had gone to take hers shower as usual, and sure ’nuff while washin’ hers hair she’s started to get dizzy. Dat was da last thing mommy membered til hers came to with Shad in da shower with her up under mommys’ arm and tryin’ to push mommy over da edge of da tub. After mommy finished hers shower and dried her and Shad , mommy noticed a wad of hers hair by da outside of da tub. Mommy didn’t know what to think, cuz she still had a head full of hair and it didn’t hurt so she’s didn’t worry much ’bout it at da time.  But as da day wet on mommy kept thinkin’ ’bout it and thinkin’ how she’s didn’t come to this time with a nose full of water. So mommy set out to try tu figger out what had happened. After mommy had rested up hers went back to ‘take another shower’.  Shad of course was right there with her.  So mommy got da water runnin’ and purrtended to start washin’ hers hair and gettin dizzy. She’s noticed dat Shad jumped fwom da hooman pawdee to da edge of da tub. So mommy started grabbin at da shower curtain and Shad jumped in da tub. Mommy slid down, and Shad jumped on mommy and pawed at da shower curtain til it was moved back and then she’s started pawin’ mommys head and head bumpin’ hers head tryin’ to lift it up. And then she grabbed a mouth full of hair and pulled mommys head over so dat da water wasn’t hittin hers in da face. And then under mommy’s arm she’s went and started pushin’ with all hers might tryin’ to push mommy out of da tub.

 

Shad seemed to pick up on what mommy needed and she taught herself many more things befur she went to heaven. And because of her mommy knew dat hers could train any kitty cat to do da same things and more. And so dat’s zactly what mommy did and continues to do.  Since Shad went to heaven mommy has trained or helped train (as you’s will learn with meez story) 5 more Service Cats includin’ me. 🙂 And each kitty has brought sumthin’ new to mommy. Kitty’s are very smart and very sensitive so we’s make great Service Animals. Me sure hopes you’s have enjoyed hearin’ ’bout Shad, mommy’s original Service Cat, and me can’t wait to start tellin’ you’s all ’bout sis Lexi and me.          Til da nex time, Have a Happy and Blessed Easter!!

Shad, Mommy’s Original Service Cat

Well yesfuwday wus definitions and tuday is back stowy. See der wulda nevew been a Lexi or a meez ifin not fuw Shad, mommy’s fiwst Service cat. We’s hav heawd dis stowy lots of times cuz mommy gets asked all da time how and why she’s ended up wiff Service kitty’s. So meez can tell da stowy like meez wus der. 🙂  

 

Lots of yeaws ago afur mommy’s accident hers had a beautiful white Persian kitty named Shad. Deys wus weally close as dey had been fwu lots tugeddew. Mommy had gone back tu school and her and Shad lived tugeddew alone. Den one day mommy had a caw weck dat left hers disabled. Among many of hers purrawlems, she passed out. Sumtimes mommy wuld just lose consciousness outta da blu.  And den der wus sum actions or suwwoundins dat wuld cause her tu pass out. She’s always got a little wawnin’, but it still hapuned. Aftew passin’ out at school and in da shoppin’ centew, mommy’s doctors stawdid talkin’ tu hers bout lookin’ intu a Service dog.  Well, mommy likes doggy’s fine but hers had a kitty cat and lived in a small pawtment and kuldn’t hawdly affowd tu feed Shad and herself. Mommy just didn’t fink a  doggy wus vewy feasible fuw her. So mommy just kep twudgin’ on and twyin’ tu make it.  Now Shad had always been vewy clevew, and back in those days fones wus big and had answewin machines dat wecowded tu a tape and played aloud fuw evewpawdy in da woom tu heaw. When mommy wusn’t home and sumpawdy dat Shad knew wuld call, she’s wuld paw at da fone til she’s hit da speakew fone button and den twy tu talk tu dem. More den once mommy came home tu half messages and da fone off da hook.  Mommy fawt it wus cute so hers didn’t wowwy ’bout it tu much specially since she’s only did it wiff people she’s knew. 

So one day mommy wus makin’ sum dinnew and hers passed out and hit hers head on da cownew of da desk. Mommy is vewy tall and da floor is a long way down.  MOL Anyway when mommy came tu hers heawd sumpawdy bangin’ on da doow hollewin’ POLICE.  Mommy got up and answewed da doow and der stood a vewy nice policeman askin’ ifin she’s wus alwight. Mommy told him hers wus fine and asked  why he’s wus der. He’s told mommy dat dey had wecieved a 911 call fwum hers addwess. Mommy told him hers had been unconscious and she’s hadn’t called 911.  Hims asked ifin anypawdy else kulda called, and mommy told him dat she’s lived alone. So hims called intu dispatch and deys told him dat all deys heawd wus a cat meowin’ on da uddew end of da line. So he’s asked mommy ifin hers had a kitty cat and ifin wus pawssible dat da kitty called 911. You’s know is a cwime tu call 911 ifin you’s don’t hav an emewgency. Mommy told him of couwse she’s had a cat but she’s didn’t see how Shad kulda called 911 cuz she hadn’t been twained fuw anyfin like dat. At da time mommy didn’t know anyfin ’bout Service animals uddew den seein’ eye dogs herself.  Hers doctors hadn’t been vewy specific ’bout what kinda help she’s wus gunna get fwum a Service dog when dey had suggested it.  Da nice police officew came in and checked evewfin’ ovew an den he’s left only tu be called back out a foo days latew. 

 

So dis time hims asked mommy ifin dey kuld twy tu wecweate what hapund.  Cuz da 911 call had a kitty vewy fwantically and loudly meowin’ intu da fone and den da meowin’ wuld get faint and kuld barely be  heawd in da backgwound.  And den vewy loud agin and den vewy faint.  So mommy agweed tu twy tu wecweate it and da officew left aftew callin’ dispatch and tellin’ ’em what dey wus gunna du and settin’ up a small camewa.  A little latew da plan wus set intu motion. And mommy watched fwu squinted eyes as Shad wan tu da fone and pawed at it til she’s hit da speakew fone and got a dial tone. Den hers wuld paw da nummers on da fone til a voice answewed and sed, “911 what is your emegency??”  and den Shad wuld begin tu meow and meow and den wun tu mommy meowin’ da whole time. Hers wuld paw mommy’s face and den wun back tu da fone and meow intu da speakew and den wun back tu mommy agin. She’s did dis 4 times and den laid down beside mommy and waited.      Tu dis day mommy dusn’t know how Shad lewnd tu call fuw help, but dat set mommy on da woad tu havin’ Service cats.

Service Cat and Therapy Cat: Not da Same

OMC Meez got so many nice comments and lots of new followews. Fank you Sammy fur sendin’ evewpawdy meez way. 🙂  

Anyways, you’s all wanna heaw ’bout  what meez and  sis Lexi  du fur mommy and how we’s lewned.  so, as purromised meez stowy will stawt Munday. But afuw we’s can stawt dat we’s need tu cleaw a foo fings up and giv you’s sum descwiptions and a little back stowy.  So fuw da nex foo days meez will be tellin’ ’bout mommy’s fiwst evew service kitty and  da diffewence in a “Service animal” and a “Therapy animal.” So, fiwst fings fiwst.   A service animal is an animal dat is specifically twained tu do wowk or tasks fuw a purrsun wiff a disability.  In 2011 the ADA changed da wules and definitions yet agin tu say dat  only dogs  are recognized are service animals. Howevew cewtifications and licensin’ is not wequired. And any animal dat meets dis definition is considewed a “Service animal” or “Assistance animal.”  Often people confuse “Service animals” and “Therapy animals”  and fink dey are one in da same, but dat is not da case.

 

A “Therapy animal” is defined as an animal that has been twained in obedience and scweened fuw it’s ability tu get along wiff and be comfurtable  wiff humans and uddew animals.  Da main purrpose fuw a “Therapy animal” is tu purrvide comfuwt and suppowt and affection tu those in hospitals, nuwsin’ homes, schools, hospices, cwisis centews and da like.  Agin these animals are usually considewed tu be dogs. But many uddew species includin’ cats are entewin dis field.  You can visit da ADA, Fair Housing Act, Air Carrier Access Act, etc. fuw fuwthew definitions and rights. “Therapy animals” and der handlews hav no purrtections undew da law whereas “Service animals”  and der ownews du. Each state may also make and hav laws dat guvewn and affowd additional wights and purrtections, but you’s must check wiff each state afuw assumin’ anyfin’.

In da meantime, purrlease membew dat all of you fuwwy’s are special. And just cuz meez a Service cat dusn’t mean dat meez bettew den you’s or you’s fuwwy’s. Well furiends mommy and meez been chattin’ and meez wealized dat not evewpawdy here on meez blog follows us on facebook. So dat means dat sum of you’s don’t weally know what all sis Lexi and meez du fur mommy as service cats. And meez gettin’ lots of new followews/furiends since meez posted da wadio show dat mommy wus on talkin’  ’bout what we’s du.  So we’s wus finkin’ dat maybe meez shuld tell you’s sum of ow twainin’ stowy’s . We’s kuld tell sum dat sis Lexi told and sum dat she’s didn’t tell on facebook.  So nex week ifin you’s all are innewested den meez will stawt wiff sum twainin’ stowy’s. Now, we’s fawt we’s wuld shawe sum Easter fotos wiff you’s all tunite. We’s be so blessed. As we’s told you one of ow facebook furiends sent us a gift cawd so mommy kuld buy sumfin good tu eat fur Easter, and den tuday we’s got anuddew box fwum ow sweet furiend Gizmo and hims furmily. Sis Lexi got lots of new toys fur hers Meowday dat she’s gunna shawe wiff meez, and sum more Pizza munny. 😀 YAY!!!! Pizza pawty all munf long!! And den der wus sum munny fur Easter tu.  Meez told you’s all yesfurday dat meez kuld go on and on wiff all da fings meez is fankful fur, and dis is just one more fing tu add tu meez list.
