Blest Sunday: The Selfie Fiasco

MeOW  (Dezi lays on the scratcher cleaning her face after having a few bites of breakfast, when she hears a low rumble off in the distance…)  Hisssssssssss  Hurry Raena, we’ve gotta write our Blest Sunday posty befur the storms start up again. (Dezi looks up at mommy A sitting in the chair beside the scratcher and begins to meow)  Mommy, me’s so tired of the storms. Me didn’t even get to take selfies with you and Raena.

Blest Sunday purple kitty clip art graphic

Well whose fault is that sissy? Mommy called you like, elebenty billion times. You’re the one who chose to stay UTB (under the bed) ‘stead of comin’ out fur the foto shoot. ‘Course, I’s’ll tell ya’, you didn’t miss much. Mommy couldn’t figger out how to make the smarty pants fone camera turn ‘round; and shootin’ selfies with the regular camera was like shootin’ in the dark. And, mommy made me sit and stare into the air the whole time she messed with ‘em. She got great fotos of mine’s paws and her neck. And a few of our tummies, and the tippy tops of our heads. I’s tellin’ ya’, we’d have blooper fotos fur a year outta that one foto shoot.

Dezi lays on scratcher and licks paw

Really Raena? Well, guess it’s good that mommy doesn’t claim to be a seasoned or purrfessional fotographer. Otherwise, it would really be embarrassin’. Sometimes, me thinks we could take better fotos even tho’ we don’t have any thumbs.

Raena and mommy A selfie with new dentures

You’re purrobably right sissy. We did furinally get a couple of usable fotos. Fanky fank heavens. Mommy’s been so x’cited ‘bout havin’ her new teethies, and we know everypawdy wants to see ‘em, so she wasn’t ‘bout to stop till we got at least one foto. Mommy was so touched by everypawdy who said she was purretty even without makeup.

Yeah Raena, but they’ve never seen her. Ya’ know, it’s kind’a like the old barn on the farm. It’s full of memories and luv but not much to look at. But, you throw a couple coats of fresh paint on ‘er and she’s not an eyesore anymore.

Sissy?!! Are you callin’ mommy an eyesore? I’s gonna tell.

Dezi selfie

Go ahead blabber mouth. Me wasn’t callin’ mommy an eyesore. Me was just sayin’, some old barns look better with a few coats of paint. You know, mommy’s got scars and discolorations and no eyebrows. You know how self conscious she is. She gets all decked out fur her drivers license foto fur kittens sake.

Raena and mommy A selfie with new dentures

That’s true sissy, she sure does. Anyways, I’s think the new teethies look purretty good. It’s fur sure nice to see mommy smilin’ again. She’s gonna need some adjustments, but ‘pawrently, that’s purrfectly normal. And as soon as we get the green papers fur more gas, mommy’ll call and make a ‘pointment. Mommy says she’s so very fanky fankful fur all the luv and suppurrt from our furiends durin’ this long purrocess. We are so very Blest to have the greatest furiends in the universe.

Dezi puts head in toy box to find a toy

We are Raena. That’s why we fank God fur them every day and ask Him to Bless them and meet all their needs.

I’s luvs purrayer time sissy. I’s luvs countin’ all our Blessings. (Seeing Dezi pawing through the toy basket, Raena meows…) Sissy, what are you doin’? There’s a nip nanner right here, and a nip heart and fishy and our made with luvs by awnty Ellen, silvervine toast over there.

Dezi looks over shoulder from the toy box

(Looking up and over her shoulder from the toy basket)  Me knows Raena, but those aren’t the toys me wants to play with right now. Me’s sure there’s somethin’ really fun in the toy basket, me just has to dig out some of these toys on top.

Raena lays in the wheelchair looking at box

But sissy, mommy just picked up all those toys and put ‘em away. I’s don’t think she’s gonna be too happy ‘bout you scatterin’ ‘em all over the floor again.

Dezi sniffs the Yeowww nip heart

She won’t care Raena. Mommy’s always sayin’ how much she luvs to see us playin’. (Dezi pulls the top layer of toys out of the toy basket and then looks around)  We sure are Blest to have so many toys. Me thinks me’d rather play with the nip heart after all. As we do every week, we’d like to remind you all to take a minute today and every day to give Thanks fur the Blessings in your life. Fank you fur bein’ Blessings in ours.

Hey sissy, don’t furget, we’re linkin’ up with the Kitties Blue fur Sunday Selfies. After all I’s had to put up with to get a usable foto of mommy’s new teethies, we’re fur sure postin’ ‘em. Truth be told, I’s totally enjoyed bein’ held by mommy. Ain’t ‘nuffin better than mommy luvvin’.

And to offur insight into your questions about Everything Feline. Always remember, Training is all ‘bout Repetition and Rewards.

Raena sits in tiger kitty holster cat harness

Last week we started a mini-series on Kitten/Cat Proofing your home. Most of these tips are also good for puppy/dog proofing as well. You can read Pt. 1 here. Cats are curious by nature, and that can spell trouble if we get into something we’re not supposed too. Like two legged children, we rely on you, our human to make sure our home and surroundings are safe for us. We started inside the house since we think it’s important for kitties to live inside. It’s just too dangerous for kitty to be outside roaming the streets.

The Bathroom and Laundry room:

Let’s take a look at the safety issues in the Bathroom/Laundry room. Now, we know that not all laundry rooms are in the bathroom, but clumping them together just seems natural. After all what other 2 rooms are designed for cleaning something dirty? Anyways, whether you have a vanity or just a sink, be prepared to find kitty lounging about the porcelain on those really hot days of summer. Mommy prefers cleaning with steam, but she also makes a homemade all purpose cleaner using 1/2 cup of Vinegar, 1 Tbsp. of Dawn dish detergent and water in a 16 oz. spray bottle. Mommy’s also used this same concoction to mop the floors, clean mirrors and windows. It’s a great all natural and safe cleaner. If you use bleach or other harsh chemicals for cleaning, be sure to store them out of kitty’s reach and rinse all surfaces thoroughly after cleaning. Remember, kitty will walk across most surfaces and then lick their paws.

Keep the toilet seat down, especially if you have or plan on adopting small kittens. Did you know one can actually drown in as little as 1 inch of water? So please keep that toilet seat in the downward position. We don’t recommend using those leave in toilet bowl cleaners just in case you or perhaps company forgets and leaves the toilet seat up. Accidents happen and it only takes one time to turn your life upside down.

Most laundry rooms have a small shelf up high for storing dangerous chemicals. Always keep washing machine and dryer doors closed and check and double check before turning them on. It’s a good idea to have a vent cover over the dryer exhaust vent outside to keep small animals and cats from trying to crawl in that way. If you don’t have a dryer but have the vent, it should be covered from the inside too. The exhaust vent isn’t meant to be a kitty/doggy door.

You should also store human soaps, shampoos and conditioners closed and out of kitty’s reach. Altho’ most of these won’t kill kitty, they could result in sickness or other long term health diseases. If you’re a bath taker, never leave kitty/woofy unattended with a full tub of water. Do Not use human bubble baths, bath oils or bombs when bathing kitty/doggy. Please be careful when using products like hair spray, deodorants, perfumes, hair dyes, lotions, toothpaste and other hygiene and grooming products. Never use them directly on kitty/woofy and be careful they don’t get caught in 2nd hand sprays or applications. Only use toothpastes and shampoos specifically made for kitty/woofy.

Raena lays on shower bench

The bathroom probably has the fewest electric outlets and the most hanging cords in the house. Blow dryers, curling/straight irons, shavers, toothbrushes, and other small appliances can all be shock hazards. Make sure all cords are properly stored and unplugged. Remember, kittens get into everything, and even older cats are curious about new surroundings and things. Keep trash cans covered or under the sink if possible. Bathrooms that come with windows, usually have very small ones, none the less, keep them closed or at least keep an eye on kitty so he/she doesn’t try to get out of it or fall out by accident.

One last thing before we leave the bathroom as we have personal experience with this one. Any over the toilet storage/shelving units should be anchored to the wall or have a sturdy base that allows it to be a stand alone product. Choose non glass items to display on the shelves. You never know when kitty’s curiosity might get the best of him/her and the unit including all it’s contents come crashing to the floor.

Raena close up of eyes-blooper

Can you believe it? Mommy cut half mine’s face off and

got all that goopy stuff in mine’s eyes. Just one of the many bloopers we have.

Well, fur the smallest rooms in the house, they sure do have a lot of dangers. MOL Anyways, we’ve got just a few more rooms befur we’re finished. So, get your questions and topic suggestions in now. And don’t furget, you can ketch un on any post on this series by clickin’ the links on our Training Tips and Everything Feline page from the menu above. We’re gonna be joinin’ Comedy Plus fur Feline Furiday and the Cuddlywumps fur Pet Photo Fails and Bloopers. And do we ever have bloopers. ‘Course, we wouldn’t x’pect anythin’ else with mommy behind the camera. MOL  We plan on sleepin’ soon and we’re not settin’ any alarms. So, we’ll be ‘round to visit just as soon as we can.

Till the next time…………………………………………………..Be Blest!!!

As me said, we have a very important topic to discuss today. Unfortunately, it’s a topic that often gets overlooked until it’s too late. Nobody wants to think about death, much less talk about it. We often hear things like, “That’s so morbid”, “Why do you want to talk about that?” “You’re/I’m still young, there’ll be plenty of time for that stuff later.” But, the truth is, no one is guaranteed tomorrow, no matter who you are or how old you are. And, as long as animals are classified as Property under the law, we all need to talk about it and make plans for it and for our beloved furry family members. So, Let’s talk about what happens to your pets when you die.

Raena lays on shower bench

Property? Do I’s look like property to you? Hmmmpht

That’s right, Fluffy/Fido, your beloved fur baby is nothing more than Property according to the law. We’re just another car, china plate or piece of furniture that needs to be managed. The only difference is that we require constant care in the form of food and water and potty breaks. And of course anyone who has ever been owned by a four legged furry knows, we’re not property. We have feelings and are no doubt confused and grieving when we lose our family members. For those people who live alone, it becomes extremely important to have a plan in place for your furry children in the event of your death, otherwise, we’ll most definitely end up in some shelter somewhere, alone and afraid. Please, don’t assume that someone in your family will take care of your fur baby after you’re gone. It would be great if that were the case, but more often than not, things don’t happen that way.

Put It In Writing:

So, you’re ready to make preparations, where do you even start? The first thing you need to do is be prepared to Put It In Writing. We can’t stress that enough. No matter what plans you make, you need to have them written down and a copies given to all involved and one placed in your “important papers” drawer/file. If you live in an apartment or rental house, give your landlord a copy as well as a written notarized statement/notice that this person is allowed to enter your residence and remove the animals after your death. Include any phone numbers of this person and be sure to keep the notice up to date. As we stated earlier, no one is guaranteed tomorrow. It’s also a good idea to have a back up plan/person (trustee) in the event that things change with the named person/trustee (ie: death, disability, marriage, divorce, illness, etc.).

Example permission notice
Example of simple permission notice

If you have a will or other legal notices, speak with your attorney about putting in a clause with your wishes for your beloved furry(s). However, because of the very nature of wills (subject to probate or contesting) it’s a good idea to make preparations for Fluffy/Fido as a separate document, such as a Trust or Power of Attorney. You might want to check your States’ laws and guidelines with regards to pets. This notice should include all pertinent information such as whether the named person/trustee will be adopting Fluffy/Fido or merely providing temporary accommodations until Fluffy/Fido can be placed in their new permanent dwelling. You should also include things like what food, treats, litter and favorite toys Fluffy/Fido need. How many times and what time(s) of day is Fluffy used to eating, or when does Fido go for walks. Include up to date medical records, and list any health issues as well as any medications and directions for giving them. List the Vet’s name, address and telephone number as well as the last time Fluffy/Fido was seen and for what. List any quirky behavior or behavioral issues Fluffy might have. Now’s not the time to hide bad behavior. You want these arrangements to work out, so be honest. This will be a stressful time for everybody and Fluffy’s new caretaker should know what to expect so they can make the transition go as smoothly as possible.

Example of Instruction sheet
Example of an instruction sheet

You’ve checked the laws, spoken with an attorney, and are ready to make your plans…what’s next?. It’s always a good idea to check with family and friends. Fluffy/Fido might already be used to them and the transition might be easier with familiar people. This is going to be a stressful time for everyone including Fluffy/Fido, so anything that can make it less stressful is always best.  Just remember, Put your wishes In Writing, even if the person taking custody of your beloved furry is your husband, wife, adult child or some other friend or family member. This document can be something as simple as a notarized written and signed statement to a legal trust or power of attorney. If you are able, it’s also nice to allocate “Care Funds” to be used by Fluffy/Fido’s new caretaker. This should also be written down with any instructions needed to access those funds.

Care Funds:

“Care Funds” can be allocated in a will, but remember, those funds may not be available immediately, so you may want to check out other options, such as a Trust or Savings account. You can list a POD (pay on death) on the account when you open it with your bank. That means the person you name cannot access those funds until after your death. But, unlike a will, those funds can be accessed immediately. Fluffy’s going to need to eat before the probate court finishes with your will, so a trust or savings account may be the better option for you. Mommy says anyone willing to take on Fluffy/Fido should be willing to take on their expenses as well, but we also understand some animals have a little more ‘baggage’ (chronic illnesses, old age, etc.) than others and therefore require more financial care. So, Yes, anytime a Care Fund can accompany Fluffy/Fido it will make things easier in the long run.

Example adoption contract
Example Adoption Contract, courtesy of petrescue.com/library

Adopted with a Return Contract:

Another thing to consider when planning for Fluffy’s life without you is where Fluffy came from. Did you adopt from a shelter or rescue? Or, did you purchase from a breeder? Some rescues and breeders have clauses in their adoption/sale contracts that state that Fluffy/Fido must be returned to them if you can no longer care for them. If this is the case, you will need to have someone responsible for contacting the rescue/breeder so that Fluffy/Fido can be returned. This person should should be listed on any notices required to access your home or apartment to remove Fluffy and return him/her to said rescue. The notice should also list the rescues’ name, address, phone number and contact person. When returning Fluffy/Fido to the rescue/breeder be sure your trustee knows to send the information about Fluffy’s likes, medical records and any favorite toys to make the transition go easier.

What happens when friends and family can’t take Fluffy:

You’ve asked friends and family, and no one can take Fluffy after you die, what do you do now? You might want to check with your Vet, they may know of an organization that can help. There are a few organizations in both the U.S. and U.K. that will take on Fluffy/Fido after your death and let them live out their lives with the rescue. However, most of these places require a substantial “donation” accompany said pets. Unfortunately, this is not a viable option for many pet owners. However, mommy says it never hurts to ask, all they can do is say no. If they do agree to take Fluffy after your death without that substantial donation, GET IT IN WRITING!!! Make a copy for your records and theirs and let the person/trustee you chose to transport your beloved furry to their future home know. Your trustee will need to know who to contact and what kind of arrangements have been made for getting Fluffy to the organization/their final destination. The trustee should also include the information about Fluffy’s likes, medical records and any favorite food and toys to make the transition go as smoothly as possible.

Euthanization as a Last Option:

Another thing one needs to consider when making arrangements for Fluffy’s future without you, is Fluffy’s overall health and age. Rehoming or returning to a shelter or rescue may be too hard on Fluffy in the first place. You may have to consider Euthanasia as the best option. However, this is probably the most controversial option. But, at the end of the day, nobody knows their pets as well as the person who spends every day with them. In other words, you and only you know what’s best for your beloved furry. And, as long as the law sees animals as Property, it’s up to you to make the right decision for them. If this is the option you choose, make certain the person you have chosen to to see this through is willing to uphold your wishes…PUT IT IN WRITING and make sure they sign it and know this is the best option. If this is your choice you should put enough money aside to pay for this and let your “trustee” know where to find it. You may be able to carry a credit with your Vet to cover this expense when the time comes, you’ll just need to check with their office. Be sure to keep up to date on your Vet’s policies and prices with regards to euthanization.

Miscellaneous Money Options:

There are a few options one might consider to provide funds for Fluffy’s future without you. You might want to take out a life insurance policy on yourself and list your trustee or rescue organization as the beneficiary. If you do this, you need to make sure all family members are aware of this so they don’t try to contest it’s validity when the time comes. Money can make people mad, and we don’t mean angry. You might want to take a CD or Bond at your bank. Again, you can list your trustee/organization as the POD (pay on death). Whether you can provide money for Fluffy’s continued care after you’re gone or not, shouldn’t be the deciding factor in who will take care of Fluffy. We suggest making a list of the things you think are most important to the daily care of your beloved furry and then evaluating the people you know based on that list. Once you’ve narrowed your list to those that you think would make the best care giver for Fluffy after you’re gone, open the subject with them. Try to be patient, they may need some time to consider your request before agreeing to take on your beloved. And you might be surprised at who says no. But, don’t give up.

Raena stands on scratcher with paw lifted

Don’t leave our future to chance. We luvs you too much.

Final Thoughts:

This is a very important and serious matter. Any responsible pet owner should have a plan of some kind in place. No one is going to live forever and none are guaranteed a tomorrow. So, planning for your beloved furry’s future without you is the responsible thing to do. None of us really want to think about it, but we must. Again we are going to stress the importance of Putting Everything in Writing. We also suggest that you place notices on any outer doors so that emergency personnel know there are animals inside, and how many and what species. Mommy keeps a photo of us on our door along with a notice. You can get the “Animals Inside” decals that alert emergency personnel from the ASPCA for free  by filling out the form at the aspca.org/take-action/order-your-pet-safety-pack website. We also recommend carrying an emergency alert type card in your wallet or purse that has a list of emergency contacts and who to contact first or in the event of which emergency. We also recommend that your emergency contact have the number to the trustee you’ve chosen to take care of beloved furry family member(s) if they’re not one and the same. Another thing you can do is put a list of those contacts as well as emergency care instructions or who to call for Fluffy on the refrigerator. Most emergency workers are trained to look for those kinds of instructions on the fridge or a bathroom mirror. Just be sure this information is easily found and up to date.

Yep, this is our blooper foto entry.

Well, this sure is a long posty. But, we do hope we’ve helped some of you or at least reminded you to have these conversations if you haven’t already. Another thing mommy suggests is to review and update all the information in your ‘purrtant papers’ file yearly. Numbers change, people move in and out of your life and let’s face it, ain’t none of us gettin’ any younger; so our health and eating habits may change over the years. Mommy says the most ‘purrtant thing to ‘member is to keep everything updated and keep it in Writing. Never assume somepawdy is gonna take care of your beluvved pets after you’re gone. ‘Stead, make a plan and KNOW that they’re future is secured according to your wishes. We were asked this meownin’ ifin we would be includin’ templates fur the forms we suggested today. Unfurtunately, mommy didn’t have time to get them ready fur this post, so we will be postin’ those at a later date for you to copy and use. Don’t furget you can ketch up on any post in this series by clickin’ the links on our Training Tips and Everything Feline page from our menu. And leave your questions and post suggestions in the comments below or send us an email via our Contact page. Blest Sunday Surprise

Meowllo and welcome to a very Blest Sunday. Of course every Sunday is very blest to us, but mommy’s so happy and purroud today dat she said this isn’t just any Blest Sunday. Now you all know dat we feel so blest to have all of you in our lives. We could have never ‘magined havin’ so many wonderful furiends. Thank you sooooooo much fur bein’ you. Me knows, you want me to get to da mommy happy and purroud pawrt don’t ya’?

 Dezi sits on bench scratcher

Well as ya’ know this is Independence Day weekend here in da U.S.. And Americans just can’t help but wanna set off fireworks, even tho’ they be illegal within da city/town limits. And of course da town has to have a big celebration where they set off huge fireworks dat make a lot of noise. As most of ya’ know from years past, me takes this oppurrtunity to hide under anywhere me can get to. It makes mommy sad dat me does this, but it’s just da way it is. Well this is Raena’s furst year fur fireworks, and mommy had no idea how she would handle it. Of course mommy hopes dat Raena will ignore things like firewoks and thunder storms and all loud scary noises. Well, on furiday night da neighbors set off a few dat sounded mostly like a car backfire, so to mommy’s surprise me ignored them and so did Raena. But last night was da real test.

Raena catching flying toy with mouth open.

Yep, last night da town put on it’s big fireworks show. We live a couple miles from da place they set them off, but they were loud enuff fur us to hear them through da closed doors and windows. And da flashes of colored lights could be seen through our mini blinds. When they started da show Raena had been sleepin’ up on da cat tree and me had been getting a drink from da fountain on da bathroom vanity. One loud boom. Two loud booms and Raena’s head pawpped up. Mommy held her breath as she told Raena dat everythin’ was alright. Third loud boom and…Raena put her head back down and went to sleep. Mommy let out dat breath she was holdin’ and suddenly me appeared. Mommy took another deep breath and held it. Me peeked ‘round da corner of da table sittin’ by her chair and then up at Raena. Fourth big boom and me held me’s ground all da while starin’ at Raena. Hmmmmmmm She ain’t payin’ any attention to dat noise me thought. And, she seems just fine. So me went over to mommy fur a little luvvin’ and to let her know she could breathe again. And then me settled in and started playin’.  Yep, sure ‘nuff, me played ‘stead of hidin’ out fur da whole hour of noisy fireworks. Mommy is sooooooo purroud of me…and Raena too of course.

Mommy petting Raena while she sits in her lap

But, it didn’t stop there. Later last night, we had a thunderstorm. Yep, all dat gun powder shot in da skies caused it to rain. Mommy says dat’s not why, but you can’t prove it by me. Anyways, we had a big ole thunderstorm, and Raena and me both slept right through it. Mommy’s so purroud and happy today dat we both got treats befur brekky. Treats befur brekky!!! We never get treats befur brekky, but we did this meownin’.

Don’t furget how well I take mines medicine sis Dezi.

Uh, yeah, thanks fur remindin’ me Raena. As you can see in da fotos, Raena’s eyes and nose are still givin’ her some purroblems, so she’s takin’ this yucky sticky medicine to clear it up; and mommy says dat Raena’s a real champ and takes her medicine without any fights or arguments. So it’s a very Blest Sunday indeed. And we wanna fank awnty Anonymous fur da green papers to pay fur Raena’s VET visit. Mommy believes all kittens, puppies and other baby animals should get their baby core vaccinations. Beyond dat, is up to you and your VET and maybe da law. So dat means we have recurring visits fur Raena every 3 weeks. She has 2 more visits befur she’ll be thru, and then she’ll need a spay around October when she’s 6 months old. Mommy doesn’t like to do them any younger.

 Raena's selfie from mommy;s lap

Anyways, me’s gonna wrap it up fur today. We wanna pawlogize fur not commentin’ much this weekend. Mommy’s had a really bad pain in her lower back dat sends a sharp shooting pain thru her body everytime she leans furward to type. So we’s been visitin’ and readin’, we just didn’t do much commentin’. Hopefully she’ll feel better soon. We’s joinin’ da Kitties Blue fur Sunday Selfies. Sis Raena got a few lap selfies as you can see, so she wanted to join up and show off. Me’s selfie was taken last night after da fireworks. Me’s chillaxin’ and doesn’t have a care in da world. ‘Member to take a minute today and everyday to give thanks fur da many blessings in your life.

Have you heard any fireworks in your area yet?

Are you brave or a hider?

Do you like to watch the fireworks displays?
