Blest Sunday: Swapping Plates & Making Friends

Raena!!! Stop runnin’ into me and get outta me’s brekky plate. Eat your own noms.

I’s sorry sissy, mine’s eyes keep gobbin’ up and I’s can’t see so good. Besides, the noms taste better in you plate.

Dezi and Raena eat Primal Freeze dried Cat food

You have the same noms in your plate. Mommy says,… we both get the same thing. (Dezi meows quietly under her breath) And me knows we do, cuz me eats from your plate all the time. (Dezi turns and meows to Raena) Sorry ‘bout your eyes, me heard mommy talkin’ ‘bout a V E T visit fur ya’.

 Raena sitting pretty

I’s was a itty bitty kitty girl back then. The harness

was way too big fur me.

I’s heard that sissy. You know, the pawrt ‘bout you eatin’ mine’s noms. Ifin it’s okay fur you to eat mine’s noms, then it’s okay fur me to eat yours. Fanky fanks to awnty Vonda, amazon and Chewy, we only had to go 1 day without our yummy noms. As fur the V E T, I’s thinkin’, I’s might not mind. It’s been a long time since I’s last visited a V E T, I’s can barely ‘member it. Besides, mommy got stabbed at her doctors visit the other day and she said it didn’t hurt at all. Maybe, they’ll skip stabbin’ me cuz of mine’s eyes. I’s can hope, right?

Dezi lays on counter at vet officeMe wasn’t so little, and me doesn’t ever wanna go back. MOL

Yep Raena, we sure are blest. Me will purray they skip the stabbin’ ya’ too. See, me’s a good sissy. Me’s not sure what mommy tried to get us to eat on Fursday, but me sure was glad to see mr. Fedex.

Me too sissy. Seems we have a new driver, and when he brought our box, he wouldn’t let go of it till mommy purroved who she was. He said the GPS wouldn’t bring up our address and that he’d tried to deliver our noms to the baseball pawrk furst.

It’s a good thing nopawdy was out there, they might’a stole our noms.

 Primal freeze dried cat food

That would’a been pawful sissy. Ya’ know that silly address change our town went thru a few years back was s’posed to make it easier to find us. ‘Stead, all it does is confuse everypawdy, even the 911 peeps arent’ sure where they’re goin’ these days.

Yeah Raena, not all change is good. Hey, what do you think ‘bout the new furiend mommy said we have?

What new furiend sissy? I’s didn’t get to meet any new furiends.?

Me neither, silly. But you sniffed mommy’s hands fur the longest time when she came back in from her visit. She said she met the cutest little manx kitty boy named Nubs. She said she saw him sittin’ in the window of one of the ‘pawrtments out here, so she went by to say hi. She said he and his purrson were both really nice.

Raena lays in brown cat tree house

Oh, that furiend. Yep sissy, he smelled like a nice kitty. I’s sure hope the next time mommy goes to visit she’ll take me with her. Maybe he’d like to play.

Maybe Raena. Mommy said she asked ifin mr. Nubs might wanna try the noms we get to try out but won’t eat. It’s always nice when we can pass along a blessin’ to someone else who doesn’t have much. Ms. A and Nubs said they’d luv too. Ms. A said Nubs was an escape artist who luvved to dart out the door when it opened.

Raena outside in her walking harness

I’s don’t know why any kitty would wanna run outside without their purrson. The outside world is so scary and full of terrible dangers. But, I’s glad we can help Nubs out. We are such blest kitty girls to be able to try so many new things. We’ve got some really great things we’re tryin’ out this month.

 Dezi outside in walking harness

We sure do Raena. Me’s already seen one thing fur sure Nubs is gonna get. Meowin’ of pawsum new things, we need to go play with one of those new toys so mommy can get some fotos fur our review. And did you know the company’s gonna let us host a give away too? Me luvs give aways.

Raena lays on the back of the chair

I’s do too, sissy. We haven’t had one fur a while now, so this is gonna be great fun. Let’s link up with the Kitties Blue fur Sunday selfies and go play.

Dezi laying on back of chair

Sounds good Raena. Furst, we wanna remind everypawdy to take a minute today and every day to give thanks fur the blessings in your life. There’s been so much tragedy the last few months. And, altho’ our hearts break thinkin’ ‘bout all those that have been affected, we are so blest to live in the greatest Country in the world. We’re blest to have so many amazin’ furiends, and a mommy who luvs and adores us.

Chatting Cats: Decorations Everywhere

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. You should’a seen all the stuffs I’s did yesfurday. Mommy and me went to her dentist ‘pointment to get her dentures re-lined, and the place had all kinds of decorations out. Y, They even had the cutest black cat sittin’ on a table.

Dezi looks at Raena from atop the liberty cat tree

What do you mean they had a black cat sittin’ on a table Raena?

Raena jumps down from the brown tree in front of the new old window

That’s the new old window behind me. Mommy had furgot to turn the

lights on, so mine’s foto is really dark.

It wasn’t real sissy, but it was still cute. ‘Course, we have no fotos, cuz mommy totally furgot the camera. We even met a new dental assistant. And ya’ know what? She used to work at that place that refused to treat mommy ifin I’s was there. She said they talked ‘bout mommy and me furever. But she did tell mommy that we were lucky they wouldn’t treat her, cuz it was a bad place.

Sometimes God knows things we don’t Raena. Actually, most of the time. Me’s glad things worked out the way they did. What else did ya’ll do?

Raena naps on the brown cat tree in front of the new old window

We went to the Wally World and the Pet store. Mommy said she was lookin’ fur a surpurrise fur your birthday. When is your birthday sissy? Will I’s get a surpurrise too?

Dezi lays on chair

Really Raena? Mommy was lookin’ fur me a surpurrise? Me’s birthday will be here befur ya’ know it. This is October and me’s birthday is November the first. Just a few more days. Did mommy buy me anythin’?

Raena looks up at mommy while wearing the bobble hatOnly cuz it’s fur a good cause mommy. But you

know I’s don’t really like to wear hats.

How should I’s know sissy? Besides, ifin she did and I’s told ya’, it wouldn’t be a surpurrise anymore. You should’a seen all the cute dresses they had. Mommy said it was ridiculous how ‘spensive they were considerin’ how little material they actually had. Mommy almost bought us a hat. But, I’s reminded her how much we hate wearin’ hats. Ya’ know, I’s like a purretty dress as much as the next kitty, but I’s not crazy ‘bout anythin’ that covers mine’s head. It messes up mine’s purretty “fur-do”.

Dezi lays on the vanity while wearing the time traveling bobble hat

Like Raena meowed, only cuz it’s fur a good cause.

Yeah Raena, you do like gettin’ all dressed up don’t ya’? Me’s sure glad you meowed mommy outta the hat tho’. Fank the cats, we don’t celebrate halloween or mommy might be tryin’ to put masks on us too.

Is that what all the decorations are ‘bout sissy?

Dezi in a Santa Suit including the hatMe’s ready fur the Christmas holiday. Furget ’bout this

halloween stuffs and bring on Christmas.

Yep Raena, this time of year peeps go a little crazy dressin’ up like someone they’re not. Me thinks it might be a good idea ifin we were to write a posty ‘bout the dangers that us anipals might face durin’ this time. Wha’d’ya’ think?

Raena lays on cat treeDid Somepawdy meow Christmas?

I’s think that’s a great idea sissy. I’s was still really young last year, so I’s don’t ‘member much ‘bout this halloween. I’s gotta go get ready now sissy. Mommy and me have to go to her doctor’s ‘pointment today. What are you gonna do while we’re gone?

Don’t you worry ‘bout me Raena, me’s gonna take a nice relaxin’ nap. Have fun. Me’s gonna start researchin’ fur our danger posty.

Chatting Cats: She Ain’t No Spring Chick

Hey Raena, what are you doin’ in the stroller? It’s brekky time.

Raena lays in the stroller

Well sissy, ‘member that physical therapist that was s’posed to come assess mommy last week fur the wheelchair? Turns out, he never planned to come here at all. He furinally called mommy really late and told her she had to come to him at the hospital. So, we’re headin’ there today. Fanky fankfully, he’s at the rehab hospital here next door to our ‘pawrtment complex. But still, it put the wheelchair on hold fur yet another week. As ifin there isn’t already enuff red tape and hoops to jump thru.

Dezi and Raena meet in the hall way

Yeah Raena, and me ‘members how upset mommy was after waitin’ all day on him to show up. But, ya’ll aren’t goin’ fur a while yet, so come eat. You know how mommy gets when she has to tell us to eat a hunnerd times each meal.

Raena lays on the back of the chair

Yeah, she was cryin’ ‘bout that last night. Ya’ know, mommy feeds us really well. But, ‘pawrently it costs lots of green papers to buy. Mommy had thought ‘bout havin’ our auto ship go ahead and ship early, but she just couldn’t come up with enuff of those green papers. When she furinally got paid she hit the send now button on our noms. Unfurtunately, they’re comin’ from up North and won’t be here fur over a week. When she furinally realized that last night she called up Chewy to find out why they didn’t ship from the warehouse down the street. They didn’t have an answer other than the warehouse must not have had our noms in stock. Thinkin’ ‘bout us runnin’ outta noms, mommy started blubberin’ like a baby right there on the fone with the Chewy man.

Dezi looks down from atop the liberty cat tree

We’re gonna run outta food Raena? Is that what you’re meowin’? You fur sure better come eat. Ifin you don’t, me just might have to eat yours too. Me can’t be missin’ any meals now. We’ve read ‘bout how our furiends just starve when their pawrents put ‘em on a diet. At least they’re still gettin’ somethin’. We’ll waste away to nuffin’ without noms.

Don’t worry sissy. Surely mommy will figger somethin’ out?. Maybe she can order some from amazon that’ll get here in a couple of days?

 Dezi lays on chair

With what Raena? Her good looks? In case you hadn’t noticed, mommy ain’t no spring chick anymore. And me ain’t meowin’ ‘bout the kind with feathers. She’s got a few more wrinkles and rolls than she used to have. And besides, even ifin she still had all the curves in all the right places, ain’t nopawdy in the catputer fur her to flirt with.

That’s not very nice sissy. I’s gonna tell mommy you called her old, fat and wrinkly.

Do you think she doesn’t already know that Raena?

She might, but, she thinks we think she’s purrfect and gawjus.

 Dezi snuggles in mommys lap

We do tattle tail, but none of us are blind. And me was just meowin’ the facts. Now, why don’t you put some food in your mouth and keep it shut. (Mommy comes into the room with a fresh cup of coffee and Dezi saunters over and rubs against her and jumps in her lap purring loud enough to shake the picture frames on the wall)  Me luvs you mommy.

 Raena lays in mommy's lap

(Raena jumps on the chair and tries to push Dezi over so she can also sit in mommy A’s lap. Dezi hisses and jumps down. Seeing Raena’s open breakfast plate, she moves in and starts eating. Raena nuzzles mommy and starts to purr loudly)  I’s luvs you mommy. Are we gonna visit patients when we’re at the rehab hospital today? (Raena cleans her paw and notices Dezi eating  all the rabbit from her plate) I’s better go eat befur sissy scarfs down all mine’s noms. Hey sissy, don’t eat all the rabbit. That’s mine’s favorite pawrt.

Hmmmpht  You steal mommy’s lap and me will steal your rabbit… Wanna play befur you and mommy go out?

Service Cats: Does My Cat Need A Friend

Meow and welcome to another Service Cat Monday. We seem to be getting’ a later start these days, but we do hope you’re enjoyin’ these posts. Let me get the disclaimers outta the way and we’ll jump right in to today’s posty. The followin’ post will be written in human English fur reader and translator ease. Our Service Cat Monday posts aren’t intended to be an all inclusive Trainin’ Manual but rather Tips, Tricks and Techniques used/developed by mommy thru her many years of animal trainin’, cats in purrticular. And to offur insight into your questions. Ifin you have any questions or topics you would like us to cover, purrlease let us know in the comments section or send us an email. When asking behavioral questions, purrlease be as specific as pawssible. And, ifin you’ve missed any of the posts in this series, you can ketch up by clickin’ the links at the end of this post. Always remember, Training is all ‘bout Repetition and Rewards.

Dezi laying in cat tree in new harness

So, last week we talked about Training kitty to play with toys and not hands or feet. Awnty Juliea had asked a 2 part question; the second part being about getting a playmate or “Buddy Cat” for her newly adopted Patzy. So today, we’re going to discuss the dynamics of adding a second cat to your home. Does your kitty want a friend? Would adding another cat help calm an Aggressive cat? Is my cat lonely? Am I adopting another cat for the right reasons? All of those and more are loaded questions; but questions we get asked a lot. Each cat is different, and will respond to a new addition in a variety of ways.

Dezi and Raena atop the liberty cat tree with Yeowww toy

In recent years some shelters and rescues will only adopt young kittens in pairs. The idea being that if they grow up together, they will be happier and better pets. More often than not, kittens raised together will bond and become the best of friends, however, the opposite can also be true. Even littermates can grow into enemies. While this is rare, it can and does happen.

Dezi looks at Raena at the top of the Liberty cat tree

So, you adopted a kitten between the ages of 6 months and a year old. Kitty is a little more aloof than you had expected, or has some undesirable behaviors. Will adding another kitty help? Your needs, desires and wants must be secondary. Always make your resident cat’s personality and needs first. Do Not rely on a second kitty to change the behaviors of the resident cat. Kittens learn boundaries from their mothers and littermates in the first 6 to 8 weeks. A cat that was taken away from his/her mother too young will miss out on some of those lessons. A “Friend” or “Buddy Cat” is not the same. It’s better to Train the resident cat appropriate behaviors before introducing a friend in the mix. As we’ve discussed in earlier posts, introducing a new cat into the home can often come with it’s own challenges.

Dezi cares for Raena atop the Liberty cat tree

Although feral cats will gravitate to a colony for survival, and cats can live happily in multicat/pet households, they are by nature a solitary animal. That being said, we personally like to see more than one cat in a home. If you have a dominant cat, we suggest adopting a slightly older kitty with a more sedate personality. If kitty is more laid back, bordering on the lazy side, we recommend a slightly more playful kitty. And we do mean Slightly. It’s never a good idea to adopt an overly playful kitty/kitten as a friend for your older more laid back kitty. Although mommy and others have successfully integrated young kittens into homes with older cats, it poses quite a few challenges. Breed traits become very important when doing this. Remember, your resident cat’s needs must be given priority.

Raena stands on perch and looks out door

I’s can see any intruder from here.

Awnty Juliea did make note that Patzy reacted by hissing and acting territorially when she saw another cat from her window in her yard. This is typical behavior and doesn’t really determine how a cat will act toward a new kitty in the home. However, there will be hissing almost anytime a new addition is added to the home. Cats have a hierarchy and this is one way they communicate that. Me still hisses at Raena every time she follows me up the cat tree and tries to trip me. Till the day she left us, sis Lexi hissed at me every time me stuck me’s nose up her behind. But, we loved each other very much and got along great, like me and Raena. So if you decide to add a “Friend” be prepared for some growing pains and hisses.

Dezi and Raena play

Well c’mon squirt, let’s play.

We recommend asking the shelter or rescue where you adopt kitty, how well they get along with others. We also recommend not waiting too long to adopt that new friend. The longer a cat lives a solitary (only cat) life, the less likely they will be to truly accept a “Friend”.

Dezi and Lexi laying together on the bed

The hardest part about answering this question, is that we’re not there. We don’t know your cat, their personality or how they interact with others. So, of course we can’t give a definite answer as to whether or not you should adopt a new kitty. Remember, when you adopt a cat/kitten, it’s a lifetime commitment!!! Not an “Oooops, it didn’t work out” commitment. Watch your cat, if they’re truly lonely, they will give you signs, usually inappropriate behavior (severe pica, excessive meowing, excessive chewing, etc.). This can be corrected by you spending more quality time with kitty. We can’t stress enough how important it is to make the resident kitty a priority.

Lexi and Dezi lay together on window perch

Do Not adopt a Friend for your cat, just because your resident cat isn’t quite what you had hoped for. What do we mean? Well, maybe you wanted a lap cat, but after getting kitty home, you discover they’re not much for being held, much less laying around in your lap. Again, a little extra quality time spent with kitty and some Training, can change that over time. But it’s unfair to the resident cat and the “Friend Kitty” to adopt a possibly unwanted friend just so you can have a lap full of fur. Our final remarks on this subject would be to adopt 2 kitties at the same time if you possibly can. This will improve the chances of acceptance and happiness in your home. We also recommend trying to adopt kitties around the same age and activity level. And always remember, every cat can use some Training. We wish anyone who is adding a kitty to their home the best of luck. And we thank you for saving a life.

Raena hugs Dezi while she lays on the brown cat tree

I’s luvs you thiiiiiiiiiiiis much sissy.

We do hope this has helped somewhat. Sorry we can’t tell you exactly what to do, but we think if you spend enough time with your resident kitty, you’ll get your answer. Don’t furget, ifin you’ve missed any of the posts in this series, you can click the links below.
