Blest Sunday: It Couldn’t Get Any Better

(Dezi runs to the living room where mommy sits at the computer waiting. Raena chases closely behind making her signature humming sound.)

Dezi sits on arm of chair

Dezi: Sorry me’s late mommy. Sis Raena kept jumpin’ on me while me was tryin’ to take a bath.

Raena: Oh Purrlease sissy, you swatted at me furst.

Dezi and Raena on cat tree and Raena sticks her tongue out

Dezi: You stuck your tongue out at me Raena. Dat’s not nice!!!

 Dezi bathing after breakfast

Mommy A: Alright girls, that’s enough. Ya’ll don’t sound like the blest girls you are. And you know what today is, don’t you?

Dezi and Raena laying on the Liberty cat tee

(Dezi and Raena meow in unison) It’s Blest Sunday mommy!!!

Me luvs Blest Sunday. It’s kinda turned into da day when we tell all our furiends how much we luv them, and how fankful we are to have them in our lives.

Raena stands on cat scratcher and poses for the camera

It is sissy and we do fur sure. But I’s got to thinkin’ dat maybe some of our furiends think we just say dat.? Dat maybe they hear it from us so offen they might be thinkin’ we’re just sayin’ it and don’t really mean it.? You know, sompawdy asked us why we called everypawdy gawjus, bootyful or handsum.

Dezi close up while laying in mommys lap

Me worries dat sometimes our furiends might doubt us Raena, but then me thinks ‘bout it and me knows our furiends know dat we really mean what we say. We’ve only ever told da truth, so there’s no reason fur anypawdy to doubt us. As fur why we call everypawdy gawjus, bootyful or handsum, it’s cuz we think they are. When you see with eyes of luv then all you ever see is good and gawjusness. And we have da mostest pawsumest furiends in da universe.

I’s totally agree sissy. And they’re real furiends. Did you hear ‘bout da awnty dat wrote mommy da email cuz she was worried ‘bout her and others getting’ scammed?

 Dezi with treats from Donna

 Fank you awnty Donna.

Yep Raena, they care ‘bout us, cuz we care ‘bout them. Dat’s a huge gigantor blessing. And awnty Donna knew how bad mommy felt when she fell on and broke our track toy; ‘specially since it was your favorite, so she sent us a new one.

Raena tries to play with track from Donna

Why don’t da ball move? (plastic’s still on)

Raena plays with track toy from Donna

There is goes. MeoWwwwwww

Raena plays with track toy from Donna

And catnip too. Fanky fank you awnty Donna.

She sure did sissy, and a bag of treats/noms too. Fanky fank you sooooooooo much awnty Donna.

And then a couple days later, da UPS man showed up with this big box fur mommy. We know, cuz mommy checked and rechecked da address label. Inside was all kinds of yummies and goodies fur mommy. We don’t know who sent it, but they’ve fur sure got mommys number. There was a box of Ghirardelli chocolate with chocolate chips brownie mix inside. And how did they know da night she got cut up she couldn’t find any triple antibiotic cream? Well, we’ve got some now. And a honey cornbread mix, and cheater mac and cheese, and…well there was so many yummy and useful things inside dat me thought mommy would never stop cryin’.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I’s not sure I’s know da difference ‘tween sad cries and happy cries, but mommy said this was da happiest of cries.

Yeah Raena, mes not sure how to tell da difference either, but me knows she was beside herself happy when she peered into dat box. And we all say a meowsy big Fank you to whoever sent it to us. They also included a bag of noms fur us. With da bestest mostest gawjus furiends in da universe and material blessings too……our blessing meter is overflowin’. Fank you all fur bein’ da bestest furiends ever.

Dezi and Raena on the Liberty Tree looking at each other

I’s second dat sissy, and so does mommy. We’ve been thinkin’ hard and we’re gonna be writin’ our letters to Santa tonight. We can’t wait.

Don’t go overboard Raena. We have been asked ifin we have an amazon wish list, so we’re postin’ da link. Purrlease don’t feel as tho’ you must get us anythin’, but fur those of you wonderin’, here it is. Dezi and RaenaBelles wish list. In da meantime, we’re joinin’ da Kitties Blue fur Sunday Selfies. Fank you all again and again.

Raena Answers the Question: What Is A Ragdoll Cat

Hey, are ya’ll out there? Anypawdy? It’s me RaenaBelle. Most of ya’ have been here since befur I was born, and so ya’ ‘member dat I was rescued from a very uncertain future and a really bad place. I’s been here long enuff now to know dat mommy wholeheartedly supports animal rescue and adoptions. There are so many kitties, and doggies too dat need luvvin’ furever homes. Now I’s not furgettin’ all you other anipals, but let’s face it, shelters are mainly full up with cats and dogs. Most of ya’ ‘member mommy and sis Dezi’s search fur a new Service Kitty in Training after Lexi went to heaven (whispers: God rest her). Most of ya’ ‘member dat they kept hittin’ purrverbial brick walls every time they tried to adopt a “rescue” kitty. And most of ya’ ‘member how torn mommy was when she found me at a bakyard breeder. Mines “fee” was da same or lower than most shelters and “rescue organizations” in da area. But lots of peeps didn’t/don’t consider me a rescue kitty.

 Raena poses for the camera

I’s ask mommy to look up da definition of rescue and here’s what da Webster dictionary says: An act of saving or being saved from danger or distress. To deliver, redeem, ransom, reclaim, save mean to set free from confinement or danger. Well, let me tell ya’, mommy fur sure rescued me. I was born in a cage and had never been allowed outta dat cage. I was sick cuz of da conditions of da house and too many other animals who weren’t purropurrly cared fur. Mines future was uncertain till mommy saved me. We’ve had a lot of peeps ask exactly what is a Ragdoll. So I’s ask mommy ifin we could do some ‘splainin’ ‘bout da breed and a little ‘bout what goes on with these backyard breeders.

RaenaBelle travels to her forever home in mommy's lap

History of the Ragdoll

Let’s go back and give ya’ da history of da Ragdoll breed. In 1960, a non-pedigreed white Persian/Angora type kitty named Josephine had a litter of kitties sired by several unknown male Burmese/Birman like cats. One of these males had the colorpoints associated with da Siamese cat. Josephine later produced a litter of very docile, placid tempurrment, affectionate and a tendency to go limp and relaxed when picked up kitties. When a subsequent litter was born with these identical traits, Ann Baker purchased several kittens from Josephines owner and set out to create what is now known as the Ragdoll breed. Blackie, an all black Burmese like male, and Daddy Warbucks a Seal point with white feet male were among da furst litters born. Daddy Warbucks sired the founding bi-color female, Fugianna. And Blackie sired Buckwheat, a dark brown/black Burmese like famale. Fugianna and Buckwheat were both daughters of Josephine. All Ragdolls today are descendants from Ann Baker’s cats through the matings of Daddy Warbucks to Fugianna and Buckwheat. Other breeders were added and da breed grew.

The Temperament of the Ragdoll

Ragdolls are docile, calm and floppy in nature. These traits are attributed to da Persian and Birman breeds that were a pawrt of da foundation of da breed. Da breed standard states: The Ragdoll is affectionate, intelligent, relaxed in temperament, gentle and an easy to handle lap cat. They are often known as “puppy-cats”. They are easily trained, and appear to enjoy performing tricks or in our case, Service Cat tasks.

Physical Characteristics

Now let’s talk ‘bout those pesky physical characteristics. We call them pesky, cuz some peeps are more concerned with da appearance of a kitty than da purrsonality. Dat’s why black cats have such a hard time gettin’ adopted. Anyways, da Ragdoll is one of da largest breed of cats with a sturdy body, large frame and proportionate legs. Males are generally larger than the females. We did note while researchin’ fur this dat Ragdolls are being bred smaller these days; with weights being stated as somewhere between 8 to 20 pounds. We purrsonally have not seen any of those smaller Ragdolls. The color point gene is responsible for the blue eye color of the Ragdoll cats. Ragdolls have a plush medium length coat consisting of long guard hairs and no undercoat.

 Dezi sits on bench

Ragdolls come in 6 different colors: Red, Seal, Chocolate and da corresponding “dilutes”, including blue, lilac and cream. This also includes da tortie in all colors including da 3 patterns. With full coloring occurring around 3 – 4 years of age. The 4 different Ragdoll Patterns are:

  • Pointed: One color darkening at the extremities

  • Mitted: Same as pointed but with white paws and abdomen. With or without a blaze, but must have a “belly stripe” (White chin with white extending from the chin to the genitals).

  • High Mitted Bi-Color: Same as mitted, with white chest, paws and abdomen. White V mark on the face, and color can be red, blue, seal, chocolate and cream.

  • Bi-Color: White legs, White inverted V on the face, white abdomen and sometimes white patches on the back. (Excessive amounts of white or “high white” on a Bi-Color is known as the Van pattern. The Van pattern is Rare).

  • Lynx: A varient of the above types and having the Tabby markings.

 Raena playing

Inbreeding in Ragdolls is/was very high due to the very limited number of foundation cats. A lot of breeders continued to cross breed “foundation cats” to Persians, Birman and Burmese in an attempt to broaden the gene pool. In the 80’s the CFA determined there were sufficient foundations and no longer accepts for registration any cross bred Ragdolls. That means only litters born of two registered Ragdoll parents are allowed for registration. So inbreeding is still very high among the breed. However, Backyard breeders still practice cross breeding today. As far as health goes, Ragdolls have a significantly higher risk of developing and/or dying from urinary problems. We are also at risk for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy a genetic disease that can cause sudden death. A DNA test was developed in 2007 to identify the gene that causes HCM in Ragdolls, however it is costly, so not all breeders, especially backyard breeders, test for this. Otherwise we are fairly robust, low maintenance kitties.

Dezi lays on the cat tree

Now we’ll get back to da rescuin’ of me. We do know dat I’s da product of 2 Ragdoll pawrents, same as sis Dezi. However, since I’s came from a backyard breeder, no testing was purrformed on mines pawrents fur HCM. And we can’t know da lineage of mines pawrents. However, I’s have an eye issue dat be purrevalent in Persians (stay tuned, we have a review comin’ up fur a great purroduct fur this). This could be da result of a latent Persian gene or cuz one of mines pawrents pawrents was a Persian. Either way, it makes no difference to mommy, cuz she luvs me and will take care of me furever. Dat’s what she purromissed when she rescued me from dat urine stenched, dank dungeon cage. Did I’s come from a shelter or rescue organization? No. Bit I’s was rescued just da same. Altho’ mommy was torn in da beginning, once she saw da conditions I’s was born into and living in and she saw mines face, she’s never looked back. She knows I was meant to be here with her and sis Dezi. And I’s so grateful she made dat call. And fur anypawdy wonderin’, sis Dezi is a Seal Lynx Point. At this time, I’s still a little young to call, but I’s fur sure a Bi-Color Van. Mommy says, I’s’ll purrobably be a Chocolate, but we’ll have to wait a little longer to say fur certain.

 Pet Parade Blog Hop Badge

I’s gonna wrap it up now and see ‘bout getting’ some treats. I’s do wanna add, dat while we was writin’ this posty, da manager came knockin’ on our door to let us know our neighbor died last night. No, we weren’t close to her and we didn’t know she was “that sick”. She was tellin’ peeps she was gonna have a surgery and actin’ like it was nuffin’. Never da less, she was a mother, sisfur, daughter, awnty and neice to somepawdy, so ifin ya’ wouldn’t mind just sayin’ a purrayer fur her furmily dat would be nice. We’re joinin’ Rascal and Rocco fur da weekly Pet Parade. Go by and check it out.

Blest Sunday Birthday Prep

Meow and welcome to a brand new Blest Sunday and our favorite posty of da week. You know, we are sooooooooo blest. Ifin ya’ haven’t figgered it out by now, we’re a house full of mushy emotional girlies. Mommy can open up da flood gates and cry a river on da bestest of days, so you can only ‘magine what it’s like on bad days. What with da weather changin’, da holidays comin’ up, missin’ sis Lexi, and da upcomin’ extra bills, mommy’s spent a lot of da past week cryin’ her eyes out. Da month of November means dat on top of all da regular monthly bills, da car tags are due, our once a year Magic Jack fone bill’s due and most purrtantly, it’s Me’s Birthday month. Me will be 7 years old on Tuesday. Can you believe it? It seems like just yesfurday dat me was bein’ da pain in mommys’ behind and givin’ her gray furs. Now dat job falls to Raena and everypawdy expects me to be all grown up and stuffs. Has dat happened to any of you?

Dezi looks outside while sitting on the arm of the chair

Ya’ know one minute mommy’s tellin’ me dat me’s her baby girl and da next she’s sayin’ me’s her big girly and me has to set a good example fur Raena to follow. Me’s startin’ to understand why sis Lexi splatted me when mommy brought me home with her all those years ago. You know me feels so blest to have all of you in mes life. You’ve been so suppurrtive and helped me to accept sis Raena. She really is a good girly, she just doesn’t ever stop. Mommy even tells her everyday to slow down. But Raena has one speed, all out all da time. And yes, mommy has tried all da calmin’ stuffs on da market. None of them seem to even phase Raena. Mommy says we’re just gonna have to hang in there and wait it out.

Me told all of ya’ this cuz we’ve gotten a few emails and pm’s askin’ ‘bout Raenas trainin’. And peeps who followed us on facebook befur da bloggy, ‘member readin’ ‘bout mes wheelchair trainin’ and wanna know ifin Raena can drive yet. Mommy says rest assured dat when Raena starts wheelchair trainin’ we’ll post ‘bout it. Mommy says dat each kitty is different, so trainin’ doesn’t always happen at da same time. Raena is like mommy, and she’s overly sensitive to everythin’. Dat’s not a bad thing, but da spay surgery was purretty hard on her and she’s just now startin’ to really bounce back from it. She is pullin’ her weight in da massage depawrtment, and she can call fur help. She can also turn on da wheelchair and alert befur mommy passes out. So mommy says she’s doin’ great fur a 6 month old kitty.

Anyways, back to Blest Sunday and me’s Birthday. Mommy says she knows fur sure dat me has a purresent comin’. One of our awnties pawrently told mommy dat me and Raena was getting a surprise. Me can’t wait to see what it is. And yesfurday mommy was talkin’ on da fone to one of our awnty Anonymous’ dat sent her those huge cans of coffee da other day, and she sent some green papers so mommy could get Raena and me a pizza fur mes pawrty. Me hasn’t had pizza in a long time and sis Raena’s never even seen or smelled one. Meeeee-oWwww   Is she ever in fur a yummy treat. Me can already taste da yumminess. Fank you sooooooooooooooo much awnty Anonymous. Mommy says fank you both too. She says without ya’ there wouldn’t have been a pawrty. Oh, mommy woulda made me feel special by givin’ me lots of extra luvvin’ and takin’ me fur a really long stroll, but there wouldn’t have been purresents or treats. Now me can have it all.

Raena under sheet while bed is unmade

I’s really likin’ da sound of this Birthday thing sissy, it sounds as fun as playin’ in da sheets. Do I have one?

Raenaselfie of nose and eyes

Of course you have one silly. It’s da day you were born. Your Birthday is April 21st, and you’ll be one whole year old. Anyways, dat’s a long time off, so right now you just need to ‘member to treat me like da Birthday Queen. Befur we go me would like to remind peeps to keep your kitties, ‘specially da black and/or white ones inside thru halloween. As most of ya’ know, we don’t celebrate this holiday but many do. Most kitties don’t enjoy da dressing up, screamin’ trick or treaters, constant doorbells or pawrties. And fur sure da candy and treats aren’t good fur your pets. Make sure your pets are safe and as comfurtable as pawssible durin’ your celebration. A quiet room away from celebrants and/or da front door, with some food, water, litterbox, favorite toy and/or bed and maybe some music or teevee fur calming and distraction.

Dezi in a purple frame with purple roses on the side

C’mon Raena, let’s go get a bath and a nap and maybe Tuesday will hurry and get here. In da meantime, we’re joinin’ da Kitties Blue fur Sunday Selfies. And be sure and tune in tomorrow fur Service Cat Monday; we’ll be postin’ Shads backstory. Fank you all fur bein’ our furiends. We cherish, luv and purray fur you all daily. ‘Member to take a minute today and everyday to give thanks fur da blessings in your life.

Chatting Sisters: Mommy’s Got A New Fave Photo

Meowllo and welcome to a bootyful Wednesday. We’re gonna make it short and sweet today cuz mommy has lots of things she needs to do. Among those things. Raena and me are hopin’ fur a walk or stroll. Ya’ never know, mommy tries to take us out as offen as she can. Anyways, mommy says she has a brand new favorite foto.

Dezi and Raena on cat tree

I heard her say dat too sissy. What’s so special ‘bout us eatin’ our noms?

Dezi and Raena eat breakfast next to each other

Well Raena, mommies get excited and happy over da smallest and strangest of things. Me knows she thinks you be way too skinny. And after all da trouble she had with sis Lexi eatin’, mommy gets so happy when we eat heartily. But da truth of da matter is dat me thinks she’s happy cuz we’re eatin’ together. You know, mommy’s all ‘bout us getting’ along and all.

Dezi and Raena eat breakfast next to each other

I’s think you’re right sissy. And I gotta tell ya’ I’s purretty glad you’re not hissin’ at me all da time anymore too. I know mommy is as well. So I guess she has lots of things to be happy ‘bout.

Raena bathes herself atop the Liberty tree

Sure ‘nuff sis. Let’s get outta here and have a meownin’ nap so we’ll be all rested up when mommy gets ready to take us out. We hope you all have a wonderful day.
