Chatting Cats: Embarrassing, Scary and Delicious

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. We sure do wanna fank you all fur your luv and suppurrt. Mommy says it may have been a year since Lexi left her, but it feels like yesfurday. Most of ya’ unnerstand dat feelin’; and we just want you to know, you’re not alone. Anyways, besides the blues, mommy’s also been feelin’ a little out of sorts and extra achy. At furst she just thought it was cuz of the crazy weather and her teeth purroblems. But she’s had a horse and a frog wagin’ war in her throat lately, and coughin’ too. Now I’s not know how a frog much less a horsey can fit in mommy’s throat, but she sure sounds funny when she talks.

Raena, don’t make fun of mommy. That’s not nice.

Come on sissy, you know she sounds funny. You said so yourself.

That’s different. Me was talkin’ to you in purr-ivate. Me wasn’t tellin’ the world.

Dezi stand on the house on the Liberty Cat tree

Oh purrlease, you know we blab everythin’. Anyways, when we went to see mommy’s doctor yesfurday, he wasn’t sure he believed that mommy was sick. He thought she was just havin’ some allergy and sinus issues. So some lady came in and stole some of mommy’s bloods. You know, they didn’t shave her neck or nuffin’. They just stuck somethin’ in her finger and it was all over. Them VETs’ could learn a little somethin’ ’bout blood stealin’. You know, mommy be a redheaded white woman, but when they stuck her, she was a redheaded ghosty. I’s was meowin’ and goin’ crazy pants inside mine’s stroller. Mommy dropped her head ‘tween her knees and Doc came in and asked what all the fuss was ‘bout. He took one look at mommy and ran over and held her in the chair. After a hunnerd few minutes, mommy raised her head, and she was back to bein’ mine’s redheaded white mommy and not mine’s ghosty mommy. ‘Course, I’s had calmed down once Doc came in the room to help mommy, so I’s laid peacefully in the stroller lissenin’ to mommy and Doc talk.

Raena lays in the stroller

They chatted ‘bout me and how things have changed fur the worse in medicine, and a little ‘bout pawlitics while waitin’ fur those blood test results. Furinally there was a knock on the door and the blood stealin’ thief appeared and handed Doc a piece of paper. He turned and looked at mommy and said, “How are you still walking around?” Seems mommy’s body be fightin’ the infection and sicks like crazy. So he faxed a script fur another antibiotic over to the furmacy and we all said our goodbyes and see ya’ laters. And with that mommy and me headed out to said furmacy to get mommy’s medicine.

Dezi checks out Raena in her new harness

Things were goin’ purretty good till we left the furmacy and got to the car. Mommy just missed the step off the curb and down we went. Yep, she was holdin’ on to the stroller, so I’s tumbled over too. Mommy says she was so embarrassed. There she lay on the pavement, with piddle pads flyin’ everywhere. (we keep a few in the bottom of the stroller, just in case) I’s don’t know ‘bout this embarrassin’, but it sure nuff was scary. Mommy recovered like any good kitty would. She looked ‘round and pulled herself up with the help of the car. Yes, of course she pulled me up too. And then we sashayed over to the car door to load up like nuffin’ ever happened.

Raena lays on top of the Liberty Cat Tree

When we got loaded in the car, mommy started cryin’ and ‘pawlogized fur lettin’ me fall. I’s was fine. I’s was just glad mommy was okay too. She’s a little extra bruised up, but all in all, she’s okay. After all that excitement, we headed straight fur home. Without even thinkin’, mommy popped her furst antibiotic dose in her mouth and swallowed it down. Then she went online to look it up. Seems, Cipro is used to treat serious infections; but it has some purretty scary side effects. So, we sure would purreciate any purrayers you can spare.

 Dezi checks out the AeroGarden

‘Member these cute little lettuce plants?

Now, do ya’ll wanna hear somethin’ cool? Mommy had her furst grown by her own hands salad this week. Yep, she was furinally able to harvest enuff leaves to make a salad. She said it was amazin’. But she also thinks she must be doin’ somethin’ wrong, cuz our garden doesn’t look or yield as much as the ones on the AeroGarden site.

 AeroGarden Lettuce Leaves

Check out those salad leaves fresh from the AeroGarden

Yeah Raena, you’re right. But we did tell mommy that fur her furst time, she did a great job. Her lettuce pods have quite a few little baby sprouts that should eventually turn into more salad leaves. She’s been readin’ up and thinks her next growin’ venture should be Romaine. Most of the reviews talk ‘bout how quickly the Romaine grows.

I’s can’t wait sissy. I’s a really good helper. I’s tried to help mommy pick leaves fur her salad, but she kept shooin’ me away. I’s don’t know why she didn’t want mine’s help, do you?

Me doesn’t know Raena. Ya’ reckon it could have somethin’ to do with the fact that you tried to eat a few?

Who? Me? I’s was just makin’ sure they were ready, and not poison. You know, like a taste tester.

A taste tester? Yeah right. Whatever. Anyways, let’s wrap this up and go play.

 Pet Parade Blog Hop Badge

Okay sissy. Furst we need to link up with Rascal, Rocco and their pawsum co-hosts fur the weekly Pet Parade. We’ll be ‘round to visit when we can. Ya’ know, we gotta wait on mommy to help us type. And we hope you all have a furtastic weekend.

RaenaBelle, it’s your turn fur some lap luvvin’ time with mommy.

Raena lays in mommy's lap for some lap loving time

It’s ‘bout time. But why is she so sad sissy? I’s know the weather has made her pains more and her teeths are hurtin’, but those things don’t usually make her be so sad?.

Dezi lays on the arm of the chair

Oh Raena, you know mommy luvs you very much, right?

Raena lays in mommy's lap for pets and loving

Of course, sissy. And I’s luvs mommy verrrrrrrrrrrry much too. I’s so happy that she’s mine’s mommy. I’s try to show her how much I’s luvs her every day.

Dezi lays on the Liberty cat tree

She knows Raena. She’s sad right now, cuz befur you, me had a big sisfur who mommy luvved very much. They had been together a really long time. And then one day, God called Lexi to heaven. That broke mommy’s heart. Tomorrow will mark 1 year since sis Lexi left us. And tho’ you nor me will ever be Lexi, it’s our job to help ease mommy’s pain from losin’ her.

Should we be doin’ somethin’ special, sissy?

Nope Raena, that’s the beauty of luv. All you have to do is be yourself. As much as we luv mommy, she luvs us. And all we need to do is just show mommy we luv her. Maybe some extra purrs and cuddles, but we luv those too.

Lexi looks at mommy while sitting in her lap on 3/3/2016

Dear furiends, ya’ may have noticed we’ve been a little quieter the last few days. Well, mommy’s been a little sad and down and reminiscin’ ‘bout times past. Raena and me have been getting’ a lot of extra luvvin’, and we’ve been returnin’ it in spades. Mommy wrote a poem to sissy the other day, and we thought we’d share it with ya’ll today. Fur those of ya’ that joined us in the last year, you may not ‘member sis Lexi, but she will always live on in our hearts. We do hope that you will pardon our reflection on such an amazin’ soul. Sis Lexi will always be the Gold Standard by which all Service Cats will be measured. Her luv and devotion to mommy, knew no bounds. Mommy says that same luv exists in all of us, and she is so blest to be the recipient of that luv time and again.

Goodnight My Sweet

Goodnight sweet Lexi

Close your eyes and sleep now

Rest your tired and weary body

I’ll be alright, somehow.

I will hold you in my heart,

Where you can never die

I’ll remember you forever

Go ahead and close your eyes.

You’ve been with me thru it all, it seems

Ups and downs, and all the in betweens.

We held on to each other

We had so many plans, and dreams

I never thought this day would come

When you’d leave me all alone

I know you didn’t want to go

With me, you’d found your home

But time slows for no one

And this world doesn’t care

Who might need you

To always be near

So close your eyes now sweet Lexi

Rest your tired and weary body

Time will never separate us

Nor will the heavens or the stars

You will always be with me

Forever in my heart

In each and every memory

We’ll never be apart

And when you awake

On the other side

Wait for me my darling

I won’t be far behind

Goodnight sweet Lexi

This world is still unkind

Close your eyes and sleep now

I won’t be far behind.

I love you girls very much too. Raena, you and Dezi are the greatest blessings in my life. I will always miss Lexi, and those that went before. But I will cherish every moment I have with ya’ll.

While mommy wrote this poem fur sis Lexi, we know a lot of you have lost luvved ones and feel that despair. We dedicate it to all those who have known that luv and lost it. Purrlease know, you can find that luv again just like mommy has with me and Raena. We’re sending out big hugs to you all.

Service Cat Monday: Calling For Emergency Help Options Part 1

Meow Welcome to another Service Cat Monday. Ya’ know, me meowed ‘bout a special graphic fur Service Cat Mondays last week, and then mommy went and let down on the job. She didn’t get anythin’ made up. She did purromiss to work on it this week tho’, so we’ll see. As always, ifin ya’ have any questions, purrlease leave ‘em in the comments section, or send us an email. You can also use our “contact us” page in the menu. It’s purrivate, nopawdy sees it but us. And ifin you’ve missed any post in this series, purrlease click on the links at the bottom of this or any Service Cat posty. The followin’ will be written in human English fur reader and translation ease. We also need to say that our training posts are not intended to be a step by step instruction manual, as trainin’ is all about Repetition, Consistency and Rewards. We include tips, tricks and techniques mommy has used/developed through her many years of training animals, cats in purrticular.  MeeeeeeeYow  Now that the business is outta the way, let’s get to it.

Raena learning to dial the phone.

Of all the things we do, calling for help is the one more people ask/comment about. As technology evolves and times change, less and less homes have an actual land line. However, we pointed out in our first post about calling for help, that kitties can not use cell phones. So, are there other options for those that don’t want to pay for a monthly land line phone service? And if so, can kitty be trained to use it? Our latest question about calling for help comes from our sweet friends Robin and Cheddar from Cheshire Loves Karma. The jist of their question was: “How can one train kitty to call for help when their handler is unconscious? It’s one thing to tell kitty to call for help, but how will kitty know to call if nobody tells them too?

Raena learning to dial the phone.

The short answer is: Once kitty has been trained to perform a specific task in response to a specific situation; they will perform that task when that situation presents itself whether you tell them too or not. We must remember, kitties’ are very smart. They are capable of assessing a situation and acting appropriately, especially when they’ve been individually trained. We want to remind you that kitties and doggies are completely different animals with differing motivations and abilities. Kitties react from a place of love and devotion. For that reason, kitty must bond with the person/handler they are to help. That person must become kitty’s primary caretaker; in so much as they are able. You can check out our Bonding Tips and Techniques in the links below.

Raena learning to dial the phone.

Now, let’s talk about some of the other options available besides a land line. Most people have heard of those Emergency Alert monitors. Technology has come a long way since the introduction of the first Emergency Alert System. They typically come with a base unit, and a necklace or bracelet with a button to be pushed if a person needs help. Most of the units today are about the size of an old fashioned answering machine. Because mommy falls and passes out all the time, her case manager is always trying to get mommy to sign up for one of these devices. Mommy ain’t having it. She says the necklace is ugly, and she doesn’t need yet another item taking up precious outlet and cabinet space. MOL  And besides, she has us.

Raena sits with an emergency call unit

But let’s say you do want to go this route. You need to know that besides the initial cost of the unit, there is a monthly monitoring fee. The charges vary between companies, but all of these units are monitored 24/7/365. They are typically set up to call your emergency contact before alerting 911 authorities. We used to have a neighbor who had one of these units and she would press that button all the time. You could hear the voice come booming out of the base unit calling to her and asking what she had done, and if she wanted them to call her son. Her son was set up as her emergency contact, so they would call him, before alerting an ambulance, the police or fire services. These units are meant to be heard all over the house, so you need to be aware of how loud they will be. This is important as kitty will need to be trained not to be afraid of the noise/voice.

Raena with a complete emergency call unit, necklace, and bracelet

Now, let’s get to the training part. An old answering machine would make a great alternate training device since they would have a large play button, and one could record a voice message that would respond/play after the button is pushed. Of course you can use fingernail polish or a permanent marker to color the “play” button red, but it’s not necessary. There is controversy about whether cats can actually see the color red or not. The one large button is your main focus regardless of color. You will want to simulate the situation as closely as possible during training. Mommy laughs about how much extra time she actually spends on the floor during training.

Raena reaching out from the perch to alert mommy
Raena Alerting to Syncope incident

We’ll use passing out as our example for this training exercise. You’ll start out on the floor and instruct kitty/doggy to push the emergency call button. Pick a short phrase that’s easy to remember during a crisis and that’s only used for this task. You might say something like, “Call for Help”, “Get Help”, “Push Button”, or just “Help”. Be sure you are close enough to the base unit to take kitty’s paws and push the button without getting up. You can also enlist a second person to assist you with kitty if that’s an option available to you. Altho’ at some point you’ll need to be completely alone with kitty to simulate the actual incident. And remember when setting up the unit, kitty must be able to easily get to the base unit. You can also train kitty to push the button on the necklace in the same manner. But decide which action you want kitty to perform and stick to it. In other words, kitty will either be trained to push the button on the base unit or the necklace, but not both. You don’t want to confuse kitty or set kitty up to fail.

Dezi up close and personal
Dezi alerting selfie

While you’re on the floor, tell kitty to push the button and then place kitty’s paw on the button and gently push down. (Remember to use an alternate training device such as an old answering machine with the volume turned all the way up.) The recording should start and say something like, the person’s name, brief silence and then, “Do You Need Help?!” “Are you okay?” “What happened”, and “Do you want me to call someone”. It would also be helpful to record other people for kitty to hear, as monitors can be male or female. Do Not allow kitty to run away when the voice starts talking. And always remember to reward kitty with extra love. Training sessions should be consistent and short. Remember, training is all about repetition and rewards. Training should happen at least once a day for 15 to 20 minutes. If you miss a day, be prepared to start from the beginning. Repeat these steps daily until kitty starts heading for the emergency unit without being told to. We can’t say how long this will take, as all kitties are different, but it will happen so long as you’re consistent.

Dezi leaves the top of the Liberty cat tree
Me’s comin’ mommy.

Once kitty starts heading for the machine on their own, pretend you’re unconscious. Say nothing and do nothing. Kitty may or may not push the button. If kitty does not push the button, rewind a bit and instruct kitty to perform the desired action.  Keep at it. One day, the light bulb will go off and kitty will follow through without being told to. Always remember to reward kitty when they get any part of the task right. Do Not reward kitty if they don’t respond at all. You will also have to monitor kitty to be sure they’re not pushing the button just because. Initially kitty may think this is a new game.

Dezi gettin' love pats from mommy
Me will always take care of you mommy.

Do Not yell at, hit, or drench kitty with a water bottle for “playing”. Instead, use this as a training opportunity. Start a training session. In a calm voice, tell kitty this isn’t a game and remove them from the unit until you’re ready to train. You should also make the monitoring company aware of the fact that a Service Cat is employed in your house. Once kitty is performing consistently, you may contact the monitoring company and set up a training session where they are involved and you’re using the actual medical alert unit. Remember, the closer you can simulate the situation and training props, the better. Always set kitty up to succeed and reward appropriate responses with lots of praise and love.

Well, this has been a rather long posty, but we do hope it has helped someone. Today we covered the Emergency Alert systems. There are other options available, and we will try to cover those soon. Ifin you have any questions about this or anythin’ else, purrlease ‘member to leave them in the comments, or email us. And check out our other Service Cat posts below.

Well Raena, as always, everypawdy thought you were the cat’s meow in the bobble hat.

Raena looks up at mommy while wearing the bobble hat

I’s know sissy. I’s just too cute, ain’t I?. This was the favorite foto of that posty.

Baby Dezi sits in the chair and poses for the camera

This is me, Dezi, da day me came to live with mommy and sis Lexi.

Really bad 35mm camera shot. Oh how times have changed.

You know, there was a time when peeps couldn’t get enuff of me either. There’s just somethin’ ‘bout a kitten that peeps just go gaga over. There’s even a day this month called cuddly kitten day.

Dezi the kitten lays on the top ledge of the 3 tier cat tree

That’s me, sweet Dezi at about 3 months old. Yeah, da

redhead is mommy, and so is da baby in da black & white foto.

Really sissy? You know, I’s glad peeps like me and all, but there are so many kitties in the world that don’t have luvvin’ furever homes. I’s might not have enjoyed mine’s “spa day”, but I’s so fankful that mommy cares enuff ‘bout me to make sure that I’s the healthiest I’s can be, and not makin’ more baby kittens to end up homeless or worse.

Raena laying on the nip mat after her spay day

I’s hope I’s never have to do dat again. Dat “spa day” wasn’t any fun.

But mommy says I’s’ll be healthier now.

Yep Raena, an unaltered animal is more purrone to serious health issues. And those cute cuddly kittens grow up. Mommy says we’ll always be her cute cuddly babies, but amazinly enuff there are peeps out there that don’t feel that way. We’ll never unnerstand how somepawdy could throw away their beluvved baby, but it happens every day. Now we know we’re purreachin’ to the choir here, but just in case, Purrlease Spay and Neuter your pets, and support in any way you can, TNR efforts.

We are so very blest to have our mommy, and belong to a community of like minded peeps and anipals. We may not agree on everythin’, but we can all agree Spay/Neuter be the way to go.

Sure ‘nuff Raena. And while you might be kitten like fur a few more years, you’ve got a birthday comin’ up fast.

RaenaBelle bunny kicks a chicken leg

Ain’t I’s cute? I’s knew I’s hit da jackpot da minute I’s saw mommy.

Does that mean we’ll have a pawrty? Are birthday’s like Christmas? When is mine’s birthday, sissy? Will I’s….

RaenaBelle travels to her forever home in mommy's lap

Slow down Raena. Yes, we’ll have a pawrty. We’ll celebrate all month long. Birthday’s aren’t really like Christmas, but they do come ‘round every year. And your birthday is April 21st. That’s how we knew fur sure, you were meant to live with mommy and me. Your birthday is one week earlier than sis Lexi’s had been. When mommy found out your birthday, she unnerstood why she had been havin’ trouble findin’ a new helper fur me. Y, you hadn’t even been born yet. God has a plan and a time fur everythin’.

You mean you and mommy were waitin’ fur little ole me?

Yes Raena, we were. But don’t let it go to your head. We were blest to have found you. And you…

And I’s blest ya’ll found me. Really, I’s was. I’s got to be the luckiest most blest kitty girl in the universe. I’s got a great mommy, the bestest sisfur ever, and more furiends than I’s can count. And toys, lots and lots of toys. Mostly, I’s blest to be luvved so much.

Dezi and mommy hugging

Yep Raena, we’re fur sure blest. We wanted to update everypawdy on the fundraiser fur mommy. Mommy received a check fur $2,000.00 towards her dental this week.
