Tell All Tuesday: Potty Boxes and Litter

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. I’s comin’ to ya’ live from the Three Belles Ranch. Ya’ know, ya’ll just keep provin’ over and over again what amazin’ furiends we have. We are so touched by your luvs and suppurrt. Fanky fank you from all of us. Now, let me tell ya’, we’ve been workin’ overtime here. Mommy’s been havin’ some major panic attacks and they’re affectin’ just ‘bout everythin’…includin’ orderin’ our supplies. Ya’ know, fanky fankfully our noms are on auto delivery so they ship out on a regular schedule. Since we started usin’ the Litter Robot, and some kitty uses the occasional piddle pad, (cough) sissy, then we don’t need litter every month anymore. That bein’ meowed, we needed it this month; but our auto delivery shipped 4 days early and mommy didn’t get to add our litter to it. Mommy was a little stressed.

Raena stands on cat tree profile

Ain’t that the truth Raena. Not only was she gonna have to pay shippin’, now that Chewy be owned by Petsmart, we have to pay tax. Mommy’s always complainin’ ‘bout how high our taxes are here, 10%. She says it’s ridiculous.

Yeah sissy, so while she was stressin’ out tryin’ to figger out how and where she was gonna get our litter, we got an email that made her yahoo fur joy. Y, Youd’ve thought she got a 10 carat chocolate diamond or somethin’.

What in the world Raena? A 10 carat chocolate diamond? Where did you get that?

Dezi rolls on nip toys

Well sissy, everypawdy knows women luvs diamonds, and it’s Valentine’s month. Everypawdy’s talkin’ ‘bout how you should give your Valentine a box of chocolates; and mommy likes chocolate. So, the bestest of both world’s is a chocolate diamond.

(Dezi shakes her head)  Oh Raena, guess sometimes ya’ can’t argue with your logic. But, mommy didn’t get no chocolate diamond, did she?

Nope sissy, no chocolate diamonds, not even a little one. N’stead, she was x’cited that we were bein’ offured the chance to review our favorite litter, sWheatScoop.

Raena walks by sWheatScoop cat litter

Me thinks mommy may need to get out more Raena. Nopawdy should get that x’cited over kitty litter. MOL

Ya’ might be right sissy. But, fur now, we’re gonna tell everypawdy why we like SwheatScoop so much. Furst let’s see what Chewy says:

Description

New, improved sWheat Scoop Multi-Cat litter not only eliminates odors better, but clumps faster and firmer than ever. It’s great for high-traffic litter boxes that are frequently in use! Unlike many clumping litters, sWheat Scoop contains no silica dust, sodium bentonite or chemicals of any kind. That’s why it’s even recommended by veterinarians for kittens and post-surgical cats. Since sWheat Scoop litter absorbs moisture faster than ordinary clumping litter brands, the rest of the litter stays clean and fresh. Which means it can last longer between litter box changes, saving you significant time and money.

Key Benefits

  • Breakthrough kitty litter is made from 100% wheat for multi-cat homes.

  • Powerful, long-lasting odor control works to effectively neutralize odors.

  • Wheat starches clump fast and firmly for easy scooping.

  • Recommended by veterinarians with no added dyes or perfumes.

  • Eco-friendly, all-natural litter is made from wheat and is 100% biodegradable.

We received the 12 pound bag of sWheatScoop Multi Cat. sWheatScoop comes in 3 formulas with 3 sizes in each. It costs t’ween $10.99 – $37.04. Mommy says she can’t tell the difference t’ween the original and the multi cat. She says they look the same, smell the same, and work the same way. The bag contains nuffin’ but wheat. There’s not purrfumes or dyes. We kitties don’t really care fur a purrfumey pawtty box, so ‘purreciate the naturalness of sWheatScoop. Mommy says it clumps well and definitely eliminates pawtty box odors. Mommy says the only time she really smells anythin’ is when a fresh deposit is made. Warm urine hits the wheat and smells a bit like a loaf of bread.

As fur trackin’, mommy says it’s purretty much like every other litter on the market. C’mon peeps, ya’ have a cat, litter boxes and tracked litter is just one of the things that come along with us. As fur us kitties with extra floof in the bloomer area, let me tell ya’, more offen than not, some of those litter pawrticals are gonna stick to our furs. You know, we have to drip dry after all.

RaenaBelle Maycee, me can’t believe you meowed that.

What? It’s the truth ain’t it sissy?

Well, yeah, but you’re not s’posed to meow it out loud.

Raena sniffs bag of sWheatScoop cat litter

Whatever. I’s just meowin’ it like it is. Mommy says that’s another reason she really likes sWheatScoop. It clumps in the box, but not in our intestines. And, it breaks down quickly when flushed in the human pawtty box. Maybe the most ‘purrtant reason mommy likes sWheatScoop, is that you’ll actually use the pawtty box ‘stead of the floor. It also works well in our Litter Robot, We can’t meow ‘bout other automated pawtty boxes, but we suspect it would work cuz it clumps well. Anyways, we give it 3 paws up each and a thumb up from mommy.

Blest Sunday: Busy But Blest

MeOW-llo Welcome to a brand new Blest Sunday, one of our most favorite days of the week. It’s been so crazy ‘round here this past week, mommy said the days started runnin’ into one another. Ya’ know mommy has memory purroblems so she likes to have a schedule. She says some of those memory issues are from old age. Ya’ know, she grew up with dinosaurs. Anyways, when her schedule gets messed up, it really throws her off. So, havin’ her counselor come on Furiday ‘stead of Monday and tryin’ to figger out what to pack and where to start, had mommy’s head all in a tizzy. Not to mention all the extra pain cuz of the colds and the doctor messin’ with her medications. Oh and she’s gotta get things together fur her complaint and a new lease. Mommy says she ain’t lettin’ ‘em push us ‘round or out. Altho’, we’d fur sure be up fur movin’ away to a whole new place. We’ll be all packed up; it’d be the purrfect time.

Dezi and Raena lay on cat tree with Blest Sunday banner

Don’t furget sissy, we’d have to rent some kind’a truck, cuz the car still ain’t fixed. Fur some reason the mechanic won’t call us back with a propurr estimate to fix the busted head gasket. Looks like mommy’s gonna have to find a new mechanic.

Raena lays in chair watching Dezi bathe

Yep Raena, somethin’ else to go on mommy’s schedule. And, with everythin’ that’s been goin’ on, we’ve not been able to visit our furiends, certainly not the way we’d like. We really miss ya’ll. Even tho’ we’ve not been able to visit, we say a purrayer fur ya’ every day. Anyways, busy or not, crazy or not, we’re still Blest. At the moment, we have a roof over our heads and warmth in the cold. Food in our bellies, mommy’s fankful fur her coffee, and an abundance of luv.

Dezi profile laying on floor

We sure do sissy. What more could a kitty girl asked fur? Altho’ I’s do really miss visitin’ with our furiends. Meowin’ of furiends, we got a card with some green papers this past week from awnty Christine and Spike the Scottish Black Cat, and uncle Greg and the gang at Feline Café’. Fanky fank you. We so ‘purreciate you luvs and suppurrt and furiendship.

Raena lays atop the cat tree

Yes, fank ya’ll. And awnty Cindy sent mommy some old fashioned saltwater taffy that she found at a Stuckies. Me’s never heard of this place, but mommy says she ‘members ‘em from her childhood and thought they’d all closed down. Mommy’s favoritest candy in the whole world is peppermint saltwater taffy. Fank you awnty Cindy, mommy enjoyed her gift.

Dezi and Raena sniff taffy gift from Cindy

Did mommy let you try any sissy?

‘Course not Raena. Mommy said it wasn’t fur kitties. Sometimes, me wonders ifin she just says that cuz she’s stingy and wants it all to herself.

Nah sissy, mommy wouldn’t do that…would she? Nah, she wouldn’t. Mommy’s the one that’s always tellin’ us how ‘purrtant it is to share. Anyways, mommy says she has work to do, so we better post our Sunday Selfies, link up with the Kitties Blue and get to work.

Dezi lays pretty on the floor

Sure ’nuff Raena. As we do each week, we’d like to remind you all to take a minute today and every day to Give Thanks fur the Blessings in your lives. Fank you so much fur bein’ Blessings in ours. And, fur your conitnued purrayers and patience durin’ this time. We purromiss to visit when we can, and hopefully this will all settle down soon and things can go back to some kind of normal.

The following post will be written in human English for reader and translator ease. Our Service Cat posts aren’t intended to be an all inclusive Training Manual but rather Tips, Tricks and Techniques used/developed by mommy A thru her many years of animal training, cats in purr-ticular. And to offer insight into your questions about Everything Feline. Always remember, successful Training is all about Repetition and Rewards.

Food vs. Feed:

The point of this mini-series isn’t to tell you what you need to feed your pets, or to pass judgment on anyone. We’re merely trying to help educate pet owners to recognize ingredients and make the best choices for your pets. As long as pet owners continue to support big pet companies and remain silent about the quality of pet feed, those companies will continue to provide sub par feed that cause illnesses and kill thousands of pets every day. You may have noticed we refer to these pet foods as feed and not food. The following excerpts were taken directly from Truthaboutpetfood.com with permission. It’s a great article that you might want to read.

Examples of the differences between feed and food…

FDA’s Compliance Policy “CPG Sec. 675.100 Diversion of Contaminated Food for Animal Use” states “FDA does not object to the diversion to animal feed of human food adulterated with rodent, roach, or bird excreta.”

Compliance Policy “CPG Sec. 675.200 Diversion of Adulterated Food to Acceptable Animal Feed Use” states “The Center will consider the requests for diversion of food considered adulterated for human use in all situations where the diverted food will be acceptable for its intended animal food use. Such situations may include:
a. Pesticide contamination in excess of the permitted tolerance or action level.
b. Pesticide contamination where the pesticide involved is unapproved for use on a food or feed commodity.
c. Contamination by industrial chemicals.
d. Contamination by natural toxicants.
e. Contamination by filth.
f. Microbiological contamination.
g. Over tolerance or unpermitted drug residues.

One more, Compliance Policy “CPG Sec. 690.300 Canned Pet Food” states “Pet food consisting of material from diseased animals or animals which have died otherwise than by slaughter, which is in violation of 402(a)(5) will not ordinarily be actionable, if it is not otherwise in violation of the law. It will be considered fit for animal consumption.”

One commenter said that in the past many pets lived to be in their teens eating big pet feeds; have they changed that much?. The answer is YES, they have changed that much. The beginning of that change was in the late 1950’s when the AAFCO established a committee to oversee and establish regulations over pet food. Once upon a time, canned meat was the only pet food available. It was mostly horse meat, but it didn’t contain a list of fillers and unnecessary ingredients. A lot of those same pets were routinely fed table scraps as well. Mommy remembers her grandmother throwing out left overs to the barn cats and strays and even to the house poodle, who lived to be 19 years old. Her name was Pepper, and she never ate kibble.

Design and Intention of Teeth:

If you look at your kitty’s teeth, you’ll notice almost all of them are pointed. They’ve been designed to rip and tear meat, skin, muscle, bone, tendons, etc., not chew. A cow on the other hand, has flat teeth like humans. Those teeth are meant to chew food before it gets digested. Often you’ll notice kitty’s regurgitated food looks much like it did in kitty’s plate. That’s because kitties basically swallow their food whole. They don’t have the ability to chew it up. Kitties were never intended to eat pellets or kibble.

Raena gets loving while laying in mommy A's lap with her mouth open in a yawn p selfieThese teethies are made fur ripping and tearing, not chewing.

Vit. K (Menadione) and Fish:

We received a question with regard to Vitamin K and fish. The question: Vit. K (Menadione: the only approved source and is toxic to humans and animals) is required by the AAFCO to be added to any food containing 25% or more of fish even though it’s dangerous and can cause illness and/or death. Is that why we don’t/are against eat(ing) fish? The answer isn’t quite as simple as yes. Until recent years we weren’t aware of the dangers of Vitamin K, but still didn’t eat fish. Certainly now that we know, it plays a factor in our choice.

However, mommy never liked to feed fish because she didn’t think it was truly part of a kitty’s proper diet, given that most cats have an aversion to water. The fish used in cat food is generally a cheap substitution for a better meat and brought on by it’s addictive nature by pet food companies trying to sway pet parents from feeding table scraps and human foods. And yes, even when she was feeding kibble or canned pet feed, she stayed away from fish. Long ago when she was a Vet tech, the Vet she worked for told her that fish was a horrible food for cats and caused illnesses because it lacked the proper nutrients. Mommy says most cats left to their own devices aren’t out fishing (there are some wildcats that do fish, but they also hunt land prey as the bulk of their diet). We should also take into account the pollutants and carcinogens found in wild fish and more so in farm raised fish when making decisions about feeding fish to our cats. Occasional fish might be okay, but it shouldn’t make up the bulk of any kitties diet.

We’re gonna wrap fur today, but don’t furget to get your questions in. We’ve got a few more questions on this topic we’ll be discussing next week. Chatting Cats: There’s No Stress Here

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle, live from the chaotic Three Belles Ranch. (The skies rumble and groan and cause the floors and windows to vibrate.) Hey sissy, wait up. Whare are you goin’, It’s just a little winter storm. Mommy says anytime the weather has such drastic extremes from highs to lows or lows to highs, a storm is sure to follow. Guess you were right, those purretty spring days are gone.

Raena lays on floor

Yeah Raena, me doesn’t like the storms outside, but storm mommy’s  on the loose inside. Me’s not sure which is worse. MOL

Ain’t that the truth sissy. I’s like break times bestest, when mommy sits down and gives us extra luvvins. Ya’ know, we read that February is Nat’l. Responsible Pet Owner month. That got us to thinkin’ ‘bout what that really means. Ya’ know, we all know respawnsible pet owners purrmote spay/neuter, and the over all health of their kitties and woofies. It means to feed us appropriate foods and keep us safe. But what ‘bout our emotional health; ‘specially durin’ stressful times like storms or packin’ up to move?

It doesn’t even have to be somethin’ that big Raena. You know us kitties aren’t always big fans of change. Just rearrangin’ the furniture is enuff to really stress us out. Mommy says that’s one of the reasons she rearranges what she can offen. She says desensitizin’ us is one way to help keep our stress levels down when somethin’ big happens.

Dezi lays on floor with nip toys

Really sissy? That’s why she does that? I’s just thought she was bored. MOL

That’s purrobably true too Raena. Mommy does say that after a while of lookin’ at the same old same old, the walls start closin’ in. Me’s never seen the walls move, but ifin mommy says so, they must.

I’s didn’t know our walls moved sissy. I’s saw somethin’ like that on the teevee the other day; it was scary. I’s glad mommy moves things ‘round so we don’t get squooshed. (Raena cleans her toe beans) Flat cats would take on a whole new meanin’. MOL

Raena bathes, toe beans

          Funny Raena, you’re a real comedi-cat.

Fanky fanks sissy. Do ya’ think I’s could get a gig as a stand up comedi-cat? (Dezi rolls her eyes) Anyways…We’ve written several Service Cat postys on movin’ and remodelin’ with kitties and settin’ up a Decompression Room to keep stress levels down. But, we don’t really have the room fur that, and we really need to be with mommy. Ya’ know, just in case she needs us.

And just cuz we don’t wanna be away from her Raena. We’re far less stressed when we can be with mommy than when we’re sepurrated from her. ‘Course a good roll on a pawsum nip toy never hurts either.

Dezi rolls around on catnip toys

That’s true too sissy. So, mommy takin’ sit down breaks to give us that extra luvvins is also how we all relieve the stress. Which of course, helps our emotional health. We’re cuddle cats, lap cats, snuggle buddies, whatever ya’ call kitties who be all up in the humans business all the time. But, even ifin your kitty is totally the opposite, he/she still needs ya’ to take care of his/her emotional health.

Maybe even more so Raena, after all the opposite of us would be a kitty who lives with a lot of stress and fear in their lives already.

You’re right sissy, I’s didn’t even think ‘bout that. Fur those kitties, speakin’ calmly and tellin’ ‘em what’s goin’ on and reassurin’ ’em that they’re still your nummer one is the bestest way to help them; besides a Decompression Room.

Even with it Raena. Mommy believes that on some level we totally unnerstand, and that tellin’ us what’s goin’ on each step of the way helps keep us calm.

Raena gets lap lovingI’s luvs you mommy.

‘Course we unnerstand her sissy. Hmmmmpht We are cats after all. Looks like mommy’s thru with her break, so let’s go see ifin we can help. Sooner or later she’s gonna have to open the door to the furbidden room (closet). I’s gotta hone mine’s sneaky skills to get in there and explore.
