Oh What A Night

(Dezi sings) Oh what a night…Oh hey, it’s Finally Furiday, WooHoo!!! Meez singin’? You wanna know what dat was all ‘bout? Well let me tell ya’. Things have been goin’ purretty good round here lately. Sissy and me have both been eatin’ really well, no pawdee box purroblems, no errant hairballs, and weez been playin wiff a new toy. Stay tuned fur more on dat in a later posty. And then last night…OMC mommy was fit to be tied. And when me sez night, what me means to say is da lonely hour of 4:30 a.m. when mommy had gotten so tired she kuld barely hold her eyes open and we was finally goin’ to sleep. She gathered me up so we kuld join sis Lexi in da bed. We turned off da last of da lights and headed to da bedroom. We always stop off at da bed to turn on da lektric blanky and tell sissy weez comin’ to bed so she needs to move off mommys pillow.

And dat’s when it all happened. Throw up was all over da bed!!! Yep, sure nuff, sis Lexi had thrown up hers dinner on da not so soft anymore top blanky and all over da edge of da mattress right next to mommy’s pillow. She was layin’ in da one clean spot on da bed. Me looked at mommy who was starin’ down wif half closed eyes in disbelief. Me’s guessin’ we ain’t goin’ to be right now me mewed quietly. Mommy set me down and moved sis Lexi and started cleanin’. Da whole time she cleaned she was shakin’ her head and repeatin’, “We don’t throw up where we sleep. We don’t pee or throw up where we eat, sleep or sit. Why did you do this Lexi? We have a pawdee box room full of piddle pads.” Sissy didn’t care, she was already back in da livin’ room getting a drink of water. Me was sittin’ at da edge of da pawdee box room door watchin’ an exhausted mommy tryin’ to get da bed sleep ready. Here we was, me’s once purroud sissy dat wuld never throw up on da bed, was now eever to weak or too lazy to get off da bed to leave her yack depawsits. An hour later mommy finally got da bed all clean and we turned in.

Lexi looks out the door from the Liberty cat tree 1-29-16

A few hours later mommy and me was awakened by a heavin’ sissy. Yep she was getting’ ready to yack again. Course mommy kuldn’t move, so she hollered, “Not on the BED Lexi!!!” So sissy took 2 steps and stood on hers climbin’ steps and one convulse later, blah. All over da steps. Then she went and stepped in it afur leavin’ another depawsit all over da floor. Me just lay there in disbelief. This ain’t how me’s sissy duz things. Me just dusn’t unnerstand why she duz things like this. Mommy sez it’s a combination of her age and da CKD; but in times like these me just wants me’s old sissy back. And while mommy was tryin’ to clean a bit and fix our brekky, me had her. She was climbin’ all over da Liberty tree and checkin’ out da big cold outdoors thru da crack in da door. Mommy has lots of laundry to do now and sum sweepin’, moppin’ and carpet monsterin’ too. Me just hopes sissy be thru throwin’ up fur awhile. Course now dat da bed is covered in piddle pads, nopawdy wants to lay on it.

Mommy, Why Do Our Friends Have to Die?

5 Ways To Help Your Pet Get Through the Grieving Process

Mommy why duz it have to get cold outside? Why duzn’t da sun always shine? Why don’t all kitties have a home? Mommy, why do our furiends have to die? And why duz me feel so sad when they do?

dw-3916 Dezi steps edit (640x480)

Oh Dezi you sure are full of questions today aren’t ya’? Honey, I don’t know why our friends have to die. I mean, I know that death is part of life, and the Bible says that it’s appointed unto man but once to die. (Hebrews 9:27) And that means all creatures who live on this planet, including our friends baby. Sometimes they just get old and their body gets tired and just can’t go on. And sometimes they get sick and there is no cure for what they have. And sometimes as awful as it is there are accidents that take our friends way before their time. Us humans have control over a lot of things, but only God controls life and death. God allows us all a chance to live and find happiness like we have with each other; until the day He calls us back to heaven. Our friends in heaven are no longer sick or old or in pain. As much as we loved them and wanted them to be a part of our lives forever, they are in a far better place now. The sads we are left with are called grief honey.

Grief comes in stages and no one can escape going through them. For humans the five stages of grief are:

  • 1.  Denial
  • 2.  Anger
  • 3.  Bargaining
  • 4.  Depression
  • 5.  Acceptance

But animals grieve as well and we, your care takers should be sensitive to that. When an animal bonds with another animal or human, they grieve the loss of that animal or human. Grief in animals can be harder to spot because often the changes are subtle and can range in severity. Some of those changes are:

  • 1.  Appetite (eating less or not at all)
  • 2.  Becoming more or less vocal
  • 3.  Appear lost or confused
  • 4.  Wandering in an attempt to find their lost companion
  • 5.  Change in sleep patterns (sleeping more or less)
  • 6.  Spending more time with a toy or item used/favorited by their lost companion (clothing, blanket, bedding, etc.)
  • 7.  Becoming more clingy to remaining household members
  • 8.  Acting Out

These are just a few symptoms of grief in animals. As humans we must pick up on these subtle changes and do what we can to help you get through the grieving process. A few ways we can help are:

  • 1.  Let survivors view the body of their lost loved one. ( funerals are for the living. A last chance to say goodbye and accept the finality of a loved ones’ passing.)
  • 2.  Spend extra quality time with the surviving pet(s). Grooming, longer walks and more playtime are just a few ways to spend that extra time.
  • 3.  Maintain your routine as closely as possible.
  • 4.  Maintain discipline for those pets that act out.
  • 5.  Depending on the severity of grief, adding a new animal to the household might be more stressful. Know your pets, you will be the best judge of when it’s time to bring home a new furry friend.

Although you can’t speed up the  grieving process, remember that cat’s shouldn’t go without food for more than 24 hours before it starts affecting their health. And if this process drags on, a trip to the vet might be called for to make sure there’s nothing physically wrong. Animals, just like humans will get through it. God has given us all the capacity to love, accept loss and love again. And also remember your anipals pick up on their humans’ emotions.

Kiki:  Meow girls, thanks for sharing me.

You know Kiki us older gals gotta stick togevver.

Can ya’ tell everypawdy a little about yous selff Kiki?

Kiki:  Well Dezi, I’m a senior panther girl. I was born April 22 of 2000. I spent my life livin’ outside in a backyard. Now that I’m older I really do wanna live inside with a peep or peeps of my own. I’ve got some long white whiskers and the man in the white coat sed I didn’t have any diseases and can’t be havin’ any babies. I’m small and have big golden eyes. The peeps here at the shelter sed I can only be adopted to an inside only home. I’m sure happy about that. You know it gets cold outside and there’s lots of dangerous things in the dark. The shelter peeps are nice but I sure would like to have a home of my own with my own human to love. I know I’m getting’ on up there in years now and I’m not the sleek well kempt looker I used to be, but I still have a lot of love to give. And I really would like to be loved by somepawdy too. Girls, do ya’ reckon there’s somepawdy out there who could love me?

Kiki the black cat
Kiki can be adopted from the Pauls Valley OK Animal Shelter.

More Furevers: My Challenge to You

(Dezi zoomies through the house meowing)

Happy New Year!!!

(Dezi jumps up and climbs the Liberty tree to the top and meows loudly and chirps)

Me sed Happy New Year!!!

Glowing galaxy Dezi in a turquoise and purple frame

(Lexi meows from the table while waiting for mommy to fix their breakfast)

Happy New Year Dezi. We heard ya’ da furzt time. Da whole neighborhood purrobly heard ya’. What’z got you so eggz-sided today?

(Dezi walks halfway down the Liberty tree and settles in on one of the shelves and meows)

Oh sissy meez so happy. Da new year is here and you and me and mommy are all still together and da SUN IS SHINING!! Fur da furst time in days we have sunshine. It’s like da whole world knows today is a furesh start day.

A furesh start day huh. What on earth are you talkin’ about?

Starry eyed Lexi in a multicolor frame of pinks, purples an turquoise.

Well sissy sum humans make these things called resolutions. They say they’re gunna change up sumfin’ in their lives. A lot of times it’s fings like lose weight or quit sum bad habit they have. Altho’ seems more offen than not most peeps don’t actually keep those resolutions. Mommy sez she dusn’t make resolutions and never has. She sez ifin you wanna make a change you shuld just do it no matter what  time of year it is. So me thought ‘stead of a resolution me wuld post a challenge fur all our furiends.

A challenge Dezi? I fink youz miz-understandin’ what a rezolushun iz. A rezolushun iz sumfin’ a purrson setz fur themselvez.

Me knows sissy, me didn’t misunnerstand. But ifin peeps can’t keep da challenges they set fur themselves, then maybe they can keep one issued by another. Mommy sed it was a good idea when me talked to her ‘bout it.

Well then Dezi, what’z da challenge?

You know sissy so many anipals was helped and found furevver homes this past year fanks to social media and lots of our furiends. So me wuld like to challenge everypawdy to help at least one more kitty than they did last year. Mommy sez dat all rescuers know “you can’t save them all”; but me finks ifin we all help one more than last year this year and then one more than this year next year and so on, then just maybe we kuld. We kuld fur sure save a few more than da year afur. And ifin everypawdy got on board then how many more fews wuld dat be?

Well Dezi youz be right. Dat’z fur shur an argument I’z kan’t refute. So, did youz habz sumkitty to share?

Rachael at the Pauls Valley Shelter waiting for adoption

Me sure duz Lexi. Hers name is Rachael and isn’t she a beauty?!! She’s in da Pauls Valley, Oklahoma shelter. She’s had a ruff road so far but is duin’ gweat now. She came to da shelter as a pregnant stray. She had hers babies and got a really bad infection and lost a breast. But she’s all healed up now and FIV/FeLV negative, spayed and current on all her vaccinations. She’s a purretty little calico girly dat wuld do best in a home all hers own. She’s a real luvver she is. Altho’ ifin you was to take innerductions slowly, she kuld warm up to another kitty or two. Ifin yous innerested in her you can call da shelter at: 405-238-1303. Pauls Valley only adopts kitties to inside homes and da adoption fee is $50.00. Now dat’s a steal fur a lifetime of luvvin’ ifin you ask me.

Dezi and Lexi in blue frames with blue roses

Purrlease share and let’s twy to get this purretty girly da furever home she deserves.

So, will you take meez challenge to help at least one more kitty than you did last year?

Till da next time………………………………………Be Blest!!!
