The following post will be written in human English for reader and translator ease. Our Service Cat posts aren’t intended to be an all inclusive Training Manual but rather Tips, Tricks and Techniques used/developed by mommy A thru her many years of animal training, cats in purr-ticular. And to offer insight into your questions about Everything Feline. Always remember, successful Training is all about Repetition and Rewards.

We’ve been asked numerous times what we suggest kitties be fed, our recommendations regarding wet cat food, what brands are the best and how to transition kitty from one food/feed to another. Today, we’ll address these questions as best we can. Ideally, cats being obligate carnivores, should eat Raw, or at least as close as possible. No bag of kibble or can of who knows exactly what is actually a “Species Appropriate” diet. One of mommy’s biggest pet peeves is the Royal Canin peeps who overcharge and claim Persian cats need a different food than Siamese. People, all cats innards are exactly the same and digest nutrients the exact same way. Targeted advertising should be totally ignored when making food choices fur your pets. Just stick to the facts and not the pretty pictures on the packaging or some advertising blurb.

Our Recommendations:

What brand do we recommend? Which wet food is best? Our answers to these questions are only our opinions based on what we believe is “Species Appropriate”. As we stated earlier, cats or Obligate Carnivores and must eat meat. Their bodies are designed to get all their nutrients from their prey and not supplements, vegetables, grains, grasses or additives. We do not recommend feeding kibble to cats ever!!! As for wet food, we recommend feeding raw or slightly cooked. You can purchase pre-made ready to serve meals online and in many local stores depending on the area you live in. Altho’ these pre-mades can be costly, they are a good option for those who don’t want to prepare your own or to introduce your pet to raw. A few brands/sites we have tried/use: Big Bear, Feline Natural/K9 Natural, Primal, Vital Essentials, Northwest Naturals, Hounds & Gatos, Raw Paws Pet Food, and Stella and Chewy’s.

Dezi’s Health Scare and Transition:

As some of you know, me, Dezi, was a kibble eater for years. Me would literally starve me’s self before eating anything but Blue Buffalo kibble. *If you are feeding Blue Buffalo, especially the grain free option, please STOP immediately. After speaking with many Veterinarians across the country, we know that it is the predominant feed many cats presenting with UTI’s are eating.* That’s exactly what happened to me. So, being the good mommy she is, mommy strapped up for the fight to switch me’s food to get and keep me healthy. Me’s urine Ph was off the charts alkaline. This is terribly dangerous for a kitty. Naturally, we refused the prescription diet offered by our Vet. These expensive options aren’t any better than traditional pet feeds.

Mommy knew raw was best, but convincing me of that was going to take time and a lot of determination and sticking to her guns from mommy. And no, me doesn’t mean real guns. Mommy would never shoot me or even point a gun in me’s direction. Me wouldn’t eat anything from a can, pouch or cup. Me was so picky, that even me’s kibble had to have a particular shape and size. Mommy ordered up some Wysong freeze dried rabbit and chicken. Note: We must add this disclaimer: Freeze Dried food should have added water/broth and not be served dry. So, me wouldn’t eat it wet so mommy served it to me dry. After missing 3 meals, me began to nibble a bit. Hmmmmm, Me thought. This stuff wasn’t half bad. That began me’s journey to raw and good health. Over the course of a few months, mommy began to add more and more water/chicken broth. Guess what? Me’s a gravy lover. Yep, once a kibble only kitty now loves gravy. Switching didn’t happen easily or over night, but it is possible to switch any animal. We will cover Transitioning Techniques next week. Yes, feeding Raena and me freeze dried raw is expensive and that’s why mommy is moving us toward totally raw. She says it’s worth it because we’re happy and healthy, but her pocket book would appreciate a break. We also switched from Wysong to Primal and/or Stella & Chewy’s for cost effectiveness.

Wrap Up:

We have great things in store for us and all of you as we continue this journey, so we do hope you’ll stay tuned. Next week we plan to discuss more about Raw Feeding, Purchasing, Preparing and Switching techniques. We received several questions about Transitioning kitty to a different/better food, so we’ll be answering those. Don’t get overwhelmed by percentages or talk of needed supplements for raw diets. We promise to show you the easiest, most effective way to keep your little carnivore eating the way nature intended on a budget.

Raena lays atop the liberty cat tree with arm outstretchedI’s never had kibble, and I’s a healthy happy kitty girl.

Me can’t even ‘member me’s kibble days and me can’t imagine eating a pellet and thinking it’s good much less food. Trust us, Raw isn’t as scary as you might think, nor is it as expensive. Whether you’re feeding one kitty or 20, raw feeding can be done economically. Ifin mommy can do it, anyone can. Chatting Cats: A Love Letter To Our Friends

Hey everypawdy, it’s me, RaenaBelle, live from the Three Belles Ranch. Mommy’s purromissed to help us try to visit our furiends some time this week. We can’t wait. And meowin’ of furiends, we wanted to do somethin’ special fur all of you fur Valentine’s Day. The day of luuuuuuuvs.

Raena sits pretty profile in love ya natural heart frame

Raena, quit bein’ silly, we don’t have time fur it. Ya’ know, our sweet furiend Valentine, holds a luv letter contest each year on his special day. And as usual, mommy got sidetracked and didn’t help us write a letter to submit. But, as you meowed, we still wanted to do somethin’ special to celebrate. So, we put our heads together and decided we would write a luv letter to all our furiends.

Dezi lays in heart frame love ya

Sure ‘nuff sissy. So, let’s get to it.

Dear Friends,

You mean so very much to us. Seeing your beautiful faces makes us smile. We enjoy hearing about your days and adventures; it makes us feel close to you. We always rejoice when good things come your way. We purray each day that God will Bless and keep each of you in His loving embrace and meet your every need.

But, True friendship shines during times of trials when things aren’t going well. We hurt when you hurt, we grieve when you grieve. We purray twice as hard when you’re in need. You’ve been there fur us and we want to be there fur you. Our lives are so much richer with all of you in them.

We can’t even imagine a life without you. Mommy says once upon a time we were alone and our skies were always gray. But with each of you sharing your lives with ours, we see only blue skies every day.

Valentine’s day has become a day fur lovers, but we think all love should be celebrated and we want you all to know that you are loved and adored. You are never alone. Tho’ we may be miles apart, you are always in our hearts. We are grateful fur each of you and are always here fur you. We’re just an email or phone call away. Thank you fur sharing, caring, and being one of the best parts of our lives.

Yes, thanky thank all of you. We will always love you.

Food vs. Feed:

The point of this mini-series isn’t to tell you what you need to feed your pets, or to pass judgment on anyone. We’re merely trying to help educate pet owners to recognize ingredients and make the best choices for your pets. As long as pet owners continue to support big pet companies and remain silent about the quality of pet feed, those companies will continue to provide sub par feed that cause illnesses and kill thousands of pets every day. You may have noticed we refer to these pet foods as feed and not food. The following excerpts were taken directly from Truthaboutpetfood.com with permission. It’s a great article that you might want to read.

Examples of the differences between feed and food…

FDA’s Compliance Policy “CPG Sec. 675.100 Diversion of Contaminated Food for Animal Use” states “FDA does not object to the diversion to animal feed of human food adulterated with rodent, roach, or bird excreta.”

Compliance Policy “CPG Sec. 675.200 Diversion of Adulterated Food to Acceptable Animal Feed Use” states “The Center will consider the requests for diversion of food considered adulterated for human use in all situations where the diverted food will be acceptable for its intended animal food use. Such situations may include:
a. Pesticide contamination in excess of the permitted tolerance or action level.
b. Pesticide contamination where the pesticide involved is unapproved for use on a food or feed commodity.
c. Contamination by industrial chemicals.
d. Contamination by natural toxicants.
e. Contamination by filth.
f. Microbiological contamination.
g. Over tolerance or unpermitted drug residues.

One more, Compliance Policy “CPG Sec. 690.300 Canned Pet Food” states “Pet food consisting of material from diseased animals or animals which have died otherwise than by slaughter, which is in violation of 402(a)(5) will not ordinarily be actionable, if it is not otherwise in violation of the law. It will be considered fit for animal consumption.”

One commenter said that in the past many pets lived to be in their teens eating big pet feeds; have they changed that much?. The answer is YES, they have changed that much. The beginning of that change was in the late 1950’s when the AAFCO established a committee to oversee and establish regulations over pet food. Once upon a time, canned meat was the only pet food available. It was mostly horse meat, but it didn’t contain a list of fillers and unnecessary ingredients. A lot of those same pets were routinely fed table scraps as well. Mommy remembers her grandmother throwing out left overs to the barn cats and strays and even to the house poodle, who lived to be 19 years old. Her name was Pepper, and she never ate kibble.

Design and Intention of Teeth:

If you look at your kitty’s teeth, you’ll notice almost all of them are pointed. They’ve been designed to rip and tear meat, skin, muscle, bone, tendons, etc., not chew. A cow on the other hand, has flat teeth like humans. Those teeth are meant to chew food before it gets digested. Often you’ll notice kitty’s regurgitated food looks much like it did in kitty’s plate. That’s because kitties basically swallow their food whole. They don’t have the ability to chew it up. Kitties were never intended to eat pellets or kibble.

Raena gets loving while laying in mommy A's lap with her mouth open in a yawn p selfieThese teethies are made fur ripping and tearing, not chewing.

Vit. K (Menadione) and Fish:

We received a question with regard to Vitamin K and fish. The question: Vit. K (Menadione: the only approved source and is toxic to humans and animals) is required by the AAFCO to be added to any food containing 25% or more of fish even though it’s dangerous and can cause illness and/or death. Is that why we don’t/are against eat(ing) fish? The answer isn’t quite as simple as yes. Until recent years we weren’t aware of the dangers of Vitamin K, but still didn’t eat fish. Certainly now that we know, it plays a factor in our choice.

However, mommy never liked to feed fish because she didn’t think it was truly part of a kitty’s proper diet, given that most cats have an aversion to water. The fish used in cat food is generally a cheap substitution for a better meat and brought on by it’s addictive nature by pet food companies trying to sway pet parents from feeding table scraps and human foods. And yes, even when she was feeding kibble or canned pet feed, she stayed away from fish. Long ago when she was a Vet tech, the Vet she worked for told her that fish was a horrible food for cats and caused illnesses because it lacked the proper nutrients. Mommy says most cats left to their own devices aren’t out fishing (there are some wildcats that do fish, but they also hunt land prey as the bulk of their diet). We should also take into account the pollutants and carcinogens found in wild fish and more so in farm raised fish when making decisions about feeding fish to our cats. Occasional fish might be okay, but it shouldn’t make up the bulk of any kitties diet.

We’re gonna wrap fur today, but don’t furget to get your questions in. We’ve got a few more questions on this topic we’ll be discussing next week. Chatting Cats: There’s No Stress Here

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle, live from the chaotic Three Belles Ranch. (The skies rumble and groan and cause the floors and windows to vibrate.) Hey sissy, wait up. Whare are you goin’, It’s just a little winter storm. Mommy says anytime the weather has such drastic extremes from highs to lows or lows to highs, a storm is sure to follow. Guess you were right, those purretty spring days are gone.

Raena lays on floor

Yeah Raena, me doesn’t like the storms outside, but storm mommy’s  on the loose inside. Me’s not sure which is worse. MOL

Ain’t that the truth sissy. I’s like break times bestest, when mommy sits down and gives us extra luvvins. Ya’ know, we read that February is Nat’l. Responsible Pet Owner month. That got us to thinkin’ ‘bout what that really means. Ya’ know, we all know respawnsible pet owners purrmote spay/neuter, and the over all health of their kitties and woofies. It means to feed us appropriate foods and keep us safe. But what ‘bout our emotional health; ‘specially durin’ stressful times like storms or packin’ up to move?

It doesn’t even have to be somethin’ that big Raena. You know us kitties aren’t always big fans of change. Just rearrangin’ the furniture is enuff to really stress us out. Mommy says that’s one of the reasons she rearranges what she can offen. She says desensitizin’ us is one way to help keep our stress levels down when somethin’ big happens.

Dezi lays on floor with nip toys

Really sissy? That’s why she does that? I’s just thought she was bored. MOL

That’s purrobably true too Raena. Mommy does say that after a while of lookin’ at the same old same old, the walls start closin’ in. Me’s never seen the walls move, but ifin mommy says so, they must.

I’s didn’t know our walls moved sissy. I’s saw somethin’ like that on the teevee the other day; it was scary. I’s glad mommy moves things ‘round so we don’t get squooshed. (Raena cleans her toe beans) Flat cats would take on a whole new meanin’. MOL

Raena bathes, toe beans

          Funny Raena, you’re a real comedi-cat.

Fanky fanks sissy. Do ya’ think I’s could get a gig as a stand up comedi-cat? (Dezi rolls her eyes) Anyways…We’ve written several Service Cat postys on movin’ and remodelin’ with kitties and settin’ up a Decompression Room to keep stress levels down. But, we don’t really have the room fur that, and we really need to be with mommy. Ya’ know, just in case she needs us.

And just cuz we don’t wanna be away from her Raena. We’re far less stressed when we can be with mommy than when we’re sepurrated from her. ‘Course a good roll on a pawsum nip toy never hurts either.

Dezi rolls around on catnip toys

That’s true too sissy. So, mommy takin’ sit down breaks to give us that extra luvvins is also how we all relieve the stress. Which of course, helps our emotional health. We’re cuddle cats, lap cats, snuggle buddies, whatever ya’ call kitties who be all up in the humans business all the time. But, even ifin your kitty is totally the opposite, he/she still needs ya’ to take care of his/her emotional health.

Maybe even more so Raena, after all the opposite of us would be a kitty who lives with a lot of stress and fear in their lives already.

You’re right sissy, I’s didn’t even think ‘bout that. Fur those kitties, speakin’ calmly and tellin’ ‘em what’s goin’ on and reassurin’ ’em that they’re still your nummer one is the bestest way to help them; besides a Decompression Room.

Even with it Raena. Mommy believes that on some level we totally unnerstand, and that tellin’ us what’s goin’ on each step of the way helps keep us calm.

Raena gets lap lovingI’s luvs you mommy.

‘Course we unnerstand her sissy. Hmmmmpht We are cats after all. Looks like mommy’s thru with her break, so let’s go see ifin we can help. Sooner or later she’s gonna have to open the door to the furbidden room (closet). I’s gotta hone mine’s sneaky skills to get in there and explore.
