Chatting Cats: Be The Change #BtC4A

Raena:  Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. Sissy, did you know this month is full of kitty holidays?

Dezi lays in wheelchair looking at camera

Dezi:   Is this a trick question Raena? Me knows your birthday is comin’ up. You meow ‘bout it all the time. What are we gonna do? Is me plannin’ a pawrty fur ya’? What…

Raena sleeps while hanging over the edge of the liberty cat tree

No, sissy, that’s not what I’s was meowin’ ‘bout. Altho’, I’s am x’cited ‘bout mine’s birthday and those are all good questions. You do the same thing befur your birthday. I’s ‘member you meowin’ ‘bout your birthday day and night. Anyways, I’s was actually meowin’ ‘bout the quarterly Blog for the Change (4/15), Pet Cat ID week (4/15 – 21), Hairball Awareness Day (4/27), Tabby Cat Day, Animal Cat Advocacy Day and Adopt a Shelter Cat Pet Day (4/30).

Me sees you tried to slip us kitties into all those days Raena. Ya’ know, there’s lots more anipals out there that need help. While we may be partial to kitties, we luv all anipals and don’t wanna see any anipal hurtin’ or bein’ mistreated.

Raena lays atop the Liberty cat tree

You’re right sissy. All anipals deserve to be treated with respect, even those we eat. I’s saw on the teevee where some farmers really mistreat the animals in their care. There’s chickens out there purr-actically livin’ on top of each other. And ducks bein’ force fed just so their livers will swell up to make one of those hoity toity dishes (Foie gras) some humans like to eat. And cows livin’ so close together, they can’t even move. I’s just don’t unnerstand it. Sure, we like meat. Actually, as kitty cats, we can’t survive without meat, but that doesn’t mean we want our dinner to be abused or mistreated.

Dezi lays on scratcher with mouth open

So true Raena. Mommy says there are some good farmers out there, but we wish they could all be good. God meant fur man to take care of the animals He put on this earth. And, He meant fur some animals to be food fur others, but me thinks it makes God really sad when He sees how some of His creations are treated. The laws that govern animals are rarely enforced. But, they’re also not really sufficient fur purrtectin’ animals. Mommy says the law calls us propurrty. Can you ‘magine that? We’re mommy’s propurrty?

Raena stands on scratcher with paw lifted

Yeah sissy, I’s don’t think mommy sees us that way tho’. Unfurtunately, lots of peeps do. That’s why they don’t take very good care of the animals. Mommy says we live in a disposable world, where peeps no longer take care of their things. Ifin somethin’ breaks, or they get tired of it, they just throw it out and get somethin’ new. It’s cuz of that way of thinkin’ that shelters and rescues are almost always filled to capacity and so many animals die each day.

Dezi sitting on scratcher close up, selfie

So, what can we as a society do to change the way farmers treat the animals in their care you ask? Well, look fur labels that tell you that piece of meat was raised and treated humanely all the way to slaughter. Support laws that call fur humane treatment and slaughter of such animals. Write your local government officials and insist they introduce or support such legislation.

As fur all the anipals in shelters and rescues, consider adoptin’ ‘stead of buyin’. And ‘member, when you adopt that sweet kitty or doggy, they’re yours fur life, not just while they’re cute or convenient. Mommy’s always said, “You can’t take your two legged child back when they misbehave, so you shouldn’t take your furry child back either.” We rely on you fur food, shelter and luvs. In return we offur unconditional luvs and devotion. Purrlease don’t give up on us. Unlike that human child, when we act out, there’s usually a very good reason, offen a medical reason. Purrlease, luvs us and give us the care you’d want given to yourself. You may not be able to Be the Change fur every animal on the planet, but you can Be the Change fur some. Whether, you volunteer, donate, lobby fur law changes, or just be the bestest mommy or daddy to the animals in your care, what you do can make a difference.

Dezi lays on scratcher and licks paw

Those are great suggestions Raena. Shelters and rescues are always in need of volunteers and supplies. You can make a difference.

Raena lays atop Liberty Cat tree and hangs paw over edge

I’s like that idea sissy. We don’t have much, but we always try to help out when we can. We wanna Be a pawrt of the Change in the way animals are treated. C’mon sissy, let’s go see what we can find to donate to those kitties less furtunate than us.

Blest Sunday: Will Raena Get A BlogPaws Birthday Party

Dezi:  MeOW Raena, what are you doin’?

Raena lays atop Liberty Cat tree and hangs paw over edge

Raena:  I’s lookin’ fur all the birdies and squirrels that were here the other day. What happened to all of ‘em, sissy? I’s thought maybe they came to wish me a happy birthday.

Dezi lays in at bed

Well Raena, furst of all your birthday isn’t fur a couple more weeks. Secondly, it turned fureezin’ cold again. The weather guessers even said we might get some snow. Can you believe that? Snow!!! (Dezi shudders) Fankfully they were wrong.

Least so far sissy. Mommy says the colds are s’posed to be here fur a little longer. Seems Spring likes the snooze button as much as us cats. Anyways, meowin’ of mine’s birthday, are you gonna throw me a pawrty? Ya’ know, like with costumes and pawrty favors and all our furiends comin’ over fur a play date? Mommy says I’s gettin’ to be a big girl now, so I’s oughtta have a big girl pawrty, right?

Dezi lays in cat bed with a snarky look

Me thinks mommy may be refurrin’ to your ever x’pandin’ belly Raena, cuz you’re only gonna be 2 years old. In Ragdoll time, you’re still an annoyin’ kitten.

Sissy, are you bein’ mean to me? I’s gonna tell mommy you’re bein’ mean.

It’s not mean ifin it’s the truth, Raena. Anyways, your birthday just happens to fall on the weekend of BlogPaws. With so many of our furiends bein’ away that weekend, me thought we’d have a small celebration fur your birthday and really whoop it up fur your Gotchaday. Me’s even workin’ on a little surpurrise.

Raena's profile while laying atop the liberty cat tree

A surpurrise, sissy? Wha’cha’ plannin? Are we goin’ to BlogPaws? Will mine’s pawrty be there?

Ifin me told ya’, it wouldn’t be a surpurrise silly. (Dezi shakes her head and smiles deviously) As fur BlogPaws, mommy says she’s still workin’ on it. Chewy offurred to sponsor us fur some of our trip and awnty Cindy and angel Maggie Meme said they’d sponsor some of it, so mommy’s tryin’ to work it all out. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

But we’d go with mommy, right sissy? I’s mean, mommy wouldn’t actually go off and leave us, right?

Dezi stands on tip of stroller-selfie

‘Course we’d go, Raena. Don’t be silly. When has mommy ever left us behind? She tells us all the time how much she luvs us and how she would never ever leave us. We’re really Blest to have such a pawsum mommy.

We sure are sissy. I’s know that lots of peeps are talkin’ ‘bout this BlogPaws, but what is it ‘zactly? Is it fun?

Yeah Raena, it’s fun. It’s a confurrence fur all the anipal bloggers and micro-bloggers. It’s a chance to meet furiends in the fur to flesh, and inneract with peeps from all the brands we luv and some we’ve never heard of. To check out all the latest and greatest in cat toys, supplies and furniture. Oh, and to attend learnin’ sessions to make our bloggy better. That last pawrt is fur mommy. Like we need any lessons on how to run our own bloggy. Hmmmpht

Raena profile selfie laying in mommy's lap getting love

That sure does sound like fun, sissy. What a way to spend mine’s birthday. I’s could meet all our furiends and maybe even go fur a stroll with ‘em. That would really be cool. Ya’ know, we’re always wantin’ to go strollin’ with our furiends, and now we really could. OMC We could show off our new stroller. We gotta get busy and trick it out.

One step at a time, grasshopper.

Grasshopper? Who are you meowin’ to, sissy? I’s no grasshopper. I’s don’t even know who grasshopper is?

Dezi lays on scratcher looking cute

Never mind, Raena. Let’s finish brekky and then we can meow ‘bout trickin’ our new Gen7 Jogger out. We are really Blest to have such pawsum oppurrtunities. Ya’ know, in all the years mommy worked, she never had a vacation. Our furst trip to BlogPaws was really the furst time mommy had ever done anythin’ like that. And now we have the chance to go again. What a blessing. As we do each week, we’d like to remind you all to take a minute today and every day to give Thanks fur the Blessings in your life.

You go ahead Raena, me’s gonna take a short nap furst.

Last week we meowed a little about kitty going outside of the home. Whether on a leash, in a stroller, going to the VET or a fun trip to the pet store, park or drive thru, kitty should be protected at all times. That includes protecting kitty from any and all parasites that kitty might encounter. We were asked, “How do you feel about flea and tick protection?” Fleas and Ticks are those bloodsucking parasites that can cause all kinds of problems for us anipals and even our humans. For those of us in the South, they can be problematic most of the year. As much as we complain about the weather, it never truly gets cold enough, long enough to kill off many of the insects and pests that carry diseases or want to make a meal of you and your furry friend.

Flea life cycle

First, let’s take a look at the flea life cycle: Egg, Larva, Pupa and Adult. The whole life cycle can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. However, the adult flea can lay up to 40 eggs a day. So, if you see one flea, no doubt, there’s more. Fleas are crafty little jumpers and will hitch a ride on pretty much anything to find their next tasty blood meal. So, for those of you who say, “My kitty never goes outside”, first we’d say, Why? We’ve given you lots of Tips for safely allowing kitty to check  out all their surroundings, including the big outdoors. But, more importantly, fleas can hitch a ride on you, your clothing, or any other pets you may have that do go outside. They’re also the teeniest of creatures and can enter your home thru minute cracks in windows, under doors, etc.. Once the flea has found it’s preferred host, your kitty, the life cycle begins anew.

The most common problem caused by fleas, is Flea Allergy Dermatitis ( no photos, they’re very graphic). Symptoms can include, lots of scratching, head shaking and biting at areas of the body where the fleas are, fur loss and hot spots. Another common health issue fleas can cause is Tapeworms. Trust me, you don’t want these nasty critters. Symptoms can be seen by examining your furry pals poopy. if Tapeworms are present, you’ll see lots of little white rice sized worm segments in the poop and possibly around kitty/doggy’s anus. And yes, humans can get Tapeworms from animals. If you see signs of Tapeworm in your pet, Treat them ASAP!!! These things won’t go away on their own. Because the Flea consumes blood, your pet may also become Anemic. Symptoms include, really pale gums, lethargy and possibly low body temps. Anemia is nothing to play around with. If you suspect your anipal is Anemic, see the VET immediately. Anemia left untreated can cause many health issues, including death.

Bartonella, also known as Cat Scratch Fever is the last health issue we’ll cover that can be caused by Flea bites. This is something cats, dogs and humans can get. Symptoms include, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures and swelling of the lymph nodes. Bartonella is very serious and if you suspect your anipal has been infected, see the VET immediately. As if fleas aren’t scary enough, we anipals also have to worry about Ticks, Mosquitos and other parasites like chewing lice, hookworms, round worms and more, including heartworms (caused by infected mosquito bite).

Raena stands on edge of stroller and looks out

So, the question was, how do we feel about Flea and Tick protection? First we’ll say that mommy A hates the idea of putting poison on or in us for any reason. That being said, she also hates the thought of us contracting any of the illnesses these parasites can cause. When mommy saved me, me had a horrible case of Fleas and Tapeworm. Of course me got a bath almost immediately with nothing more than a mild cleanser. Mommy used a Flea Comb to remove the fleas not washed down the drain and then gave me a great blow dry. She then treated me’s Tapeworms with an all natural cure because me was too young to take the actual medication usually prescribed. When using natural remedies, one must remember that they generally take longer to work, so in the case of Taeworms, mommy had to be vigilant about cleaning the litterbox and me’s bloomers.

 Dezi outside in walking harness

Most animal parents are familiar with at least a few of the treatment options available. Treatments include, shampoos, sprays, powders, collars, edible pills and spot ons. We recommend that animals only be treated during the actual Flea and Tick season for the area they live in. Most people tend to “Treat” year round. It’s our opinion that’s not necessary, however, we do recommend checking with your VET. The most effective poisons for treating Fleas and Ticks are Fopronil, (S)- methoprene, Imidacloprid, Pyriproxyfen and many swear by Brewer’s Yeast.

Close up of Dezi sitting pretty in the stroller outside

As much as mommy may hate putting poison on us, we use a spot on during the spring and summer months. We have a new one we’re trying out right now and will be telling you more about it soon. As most of you know, we are on a very fixed income, but please, don’t take chances with your pets life by using products just because of price. And NEVER, we mean NEVER EVER use a product intended for another species. Using a dog product on a cat could lead to death, and using a cat product on a dog could mean not enough protection. If your anipal is ill, please talk with your VET before using any treatments. Remember, the poison, whether ingested or applied to the anipals skin, will get into their system. You don’t want to over tax a sick animal’s liver/kidneys/heart, etc.. And, if mosquitos are a problem in your area, please consider treating your anipal for heartworms. Prevention just might save their life. If you are using collars or powders, take extra precautions to wash your hands before touching your face, eyes or mouth and keep an eye on small children. Remember, these are Poisons and could be toxic to the young or infirmed.

Raena walks towards the woods on her harness

Well, we hope we’ve helped you to better understand the Flea and protection. Altho’ mommy hates it, she believes some evils are necessary in small doses. Optimal temps fur fleas is 70-85° F and 70% humidity. That doesn’t mean they can’t thrive in other temps, but when your temps reach 70°, start thinking about Flea Treatments. Don’t furget you can check out the other posts in this series by clickin’ Training Tips and Everything Feline from our menu above. And, what questions do you want answers too? So, tell us, do you use any parasite preventions and if so, which ones?

Chatting Cats: Mewsy RaenaBelle

Hey, is anypawdy out there? It’s me, RaenaBelle. WoooooooWhee You should’a seen the winds we had yesfurday, they whipped us all over the road. Mine’s furs was blowin’ in the wind so much that by the time we got home, I’s looked like a scraggly stray. Mommy didn’t look much better. She had knots on top of knots in her head furs.

Dezi sits on cat tree looking at camera while Raena sits on small perch looking out the door

Yeah Raena, ya’ll were quite a sight. Me was worried ‘bout ya’ll. The wind here was whippin’ things ‘round outside and me could hear all kinds of noises and bangs on the house and windows. Me was so happy to see ya’ll and fur us to be all together and safe. But what happened? Ya’ll came home without mommy’s new denture, yet again?.

Dezi sit on cat tree and Raena sits on small perch while looking out the door

Well sissy, you know mommy’s been tellin’ ‘em all along that the wax mold they’ve been givin’ her to try in didn’t fit and sure ‘nuff, when they made that denture based on the wax model it didn’t fit. Y, when mommy put it in, it just fell right back out. So, they’re havin’ to remake it yet again. Hopefully, it’ll be right next week. There was yet another new dentist there yesfurday. Mommy didn’t like him at all. ‘Course, it doesn’t really matter; the dentists don’t have anythin’ to do with the denture pawrt. That’s all on these untrained assistants. Anyways, our assistant, Patrick, told mommy all ‘bout this new smarty pants fone he got fur the cheap. Ya’ know, mommy’s been thinkin’ ‘bout movin’ us into this century and gettin’ us a smarty pants fone.

Well, did ya’ll get one Raena?

Dezi sits on cat tree and Raena sits on small perch while looking out the door

Not yet, sissy. We did go by the place and check ‘em out. Seems they could give mommy one of those smarty pants fones fur furee and get us all set up fur the same price she pays fur our non smarty pants fone. And, the fureebie is even big enuff that mommy can see it. Y, she could even learn to text. All she’d have to do is talk to it and it could type all by itself.

MeOW  That does sound like a purretty smart fone, Raena. Ya’ reckon it could unnerstand our meows and help us write our own blogs? Ya’ know, on the days when mommy feels bad?

Dezi sits on cat tree and Raena sits on perch while looking out the door

I’s bet it could sissy. We tried it out in the store and mommy and the clerk got a big o’l laff when I’s meowed and it typed somethin’. Since I’s can’t read, I’s don’t know ifin it translated mine’s meow as good as mommy does tho’. Besides, I’s like writin’ our postys with mommy. The smarty pants fones are purretty cool, but I’s wouldn’t trade mommy in fur one.

Me either Raena. But, it would be nice to have one. Me hopes mommy decides to go back and get it. What else did ya’ll do yesfurday?

Nuffin’, sissy, After meowin’ ‘bout smarty pants fones, we came straight home. We missed you. And hopefully, we can get some visits in today. I’s miss what’s goin’ on with all our furiends too. And, all the x’citement that’s goin’ on outside. All the birdies are out and I’s even saw a squirrel this meownin’.

Dezi sits on cat tree and Raena sits on small perch while looking out the front door

C’mon Raena, let’s finish brekky and get to visitin’.

I’s comin’ sissy.
