Blest Sunday: Fearless And Mighty Blessings

MeOW  C’mon Raena, it’s Blest Sunday. Time to count our many Blessings fur the week. In spite of all the boom, boom, booms of fireworks, no kitty spent any time UTB (under the bed) here. We quite surpurrised mommy. Me thinks there were a couple of times when she was actually holdin’ her breath and tryin’ to purrtend she didn’t hear anythin’ so we’d ignore it too. Our town put on their little big fireworks extravaganza last night. The boomers seemed to go on furever, but we just ignored them and chilled with mommy.

Yep sissy, mommy was quite purrleased with us. I’s even caught her smilin’ once when she thought we weren’t lookin’. I’s don’t know why she was surpurrised tho’, nuffin’ scares me.

Dezi lays on the arm of the chair, selfie

Oh yeah, the big bad brave RaenaBelle, conqueror of all in her teeny big world. Hmmmmmpht  Some times you can be a real show off. There’s nuffin’ wrong with bein’ scared now and then. Fear can be a good thing. Ya’ know, like bein’ ‘fraid of mommy’s jet ski sized feet steppin’ on your tail or her’s jumbo hiney splattin’ ya’ when she falls. Bein’ ‘fraid means you know when to get outta the way.

Why would ya’ be ‘fraid of mommy, sissy? She’d never hurt us.

‘Course not Raena, least not on purr-puss. But, sometimes she doesn’t watch where she’s steppin’, and you know she doesn’t have any control over where she lands when she falls. A little fear never hurt any kitty.

Raena lays on the scratcher and looks up

Whatever sissy, I’s purrfur mine’s way better. I’s trust mommy no matter what.

Well Raena, that’s why you got your tail stepped on the other day.

Raena lays on cat scratcher

To be honest sissy, it wasn’t actually mine’s tail she stepped on. She only caught a few strands of the tippy end of mine’s tail furs. Besides, she cried and ‘pawlogized and gave me lots of extra luvvin’ afterwards. We would have even got some treats but you know we’re not eatin’ ‘em cuz she bought out the store. What kitty wants cheap treats when there’s purrlenty in the house? Anyways, we’re s’posed to be countin’ our Blessings. I’s meow our furst Blessing is that we have a pawsum luvvin’ furever home. This past week it’s been hotter than a fryin’ pan, stormed and raged and been full of silly humans pawppin’ those fireworks; and we didn’t have a care in the world. We were inside with the cool a/c loungin’ ‘bout and enjoyin’ the good life.

Dezi sniffs floor while playing with the yeowww nip heart

Ain’t that the truth Raena. And fanks to awnty Vonda, we had a bar-b-que sammich, smashed taters with cheese and a watermelon fur our celebration.

Oh sissy, that bar-b-que sammich was so tasty. I’s fanky fankful mommy shared, but I’s could’a ate a whole sammich mine’s self. I’s didn’t have any of the taters, but I’s do luvs me some cheese. And, that was mine’s furst ever watermelon. It was really purretty yummy too. Who’d’ve thought we kitties would like such a thing?

Watermelon clip art

Yep Raena, watermelons are purretty tasty, but me sure does have to pee a lot after eatin’ ‘em. Mommy says they’re one of her favorite foods. We used to have ‘em every summer when me was a kitten. Anyways, we had a great celebration. Me hopes all our furiends did too. We were reminiscin’ this past week ‘bout our lives befur we got a catputer and innernet. We are so Blest to have met so many amazin’ peeps and anipals, and we never wanna go back to the way things were befur.

We sure don’t sissy. I’s wasn’t even alive in those days. But, I’s can’t ‘magine what mine’s life would be like without all our furiends, and I’s don’t even wanna try.

Me neither Raena, me neither. Hey, did you see where mommy read that story ‘bout coffee?

You mean the one that said peeps who drink coffee appear to live up to 5 years longer than peeps who don’t drink coffee? Yep sissy, I’s saw that. I’s guess we might oughtta let her enjoy a cup ever once in a while, huh?.

Uh, Maybe you oughtta heed your own meows Raena. After all, it wasn’t me inneruptin’ her the last couple of meownings. Me was purrfectly happy to let her finish a cup while it was still hot.

Well sissy, ifin you had used the litter box ‘stead of the piddle pad, I’s wouldn’t have had to ask her to clean it up right away. Anyways, she made another cup, so technically she got to finish her coffee. Let’s wrap this up, I’s wanna play.

Dezi looks at camera while sitting on cat scratcher

‘Course you do Raena. Don’t you ever get tired? (Raena grabs a nip filled mouse and runs through the house chortlin’ and chirpin’.) Guess that answers that one. We’d like to fank you all fur bein’ our furiends. We luv you all very much. We’d also like to remind everypawdy to take a minute today and every day to give Thanks fur the Blessings in your life.

June was adopt a kitty month and we hope lots of kitties found their happy furever. Unfurtunately, we couldn’t find any stats on exactly how many kitties found homes this past month, but we believe every month is a great month to bring a new kitty into your life and home. So, let’s get to our next room.

The followin’ post will be written in human English fur reader and translator ease. Our Service Cat posts aren’t intended to be an all inclusive Trainin’ Manual but rather Tips, Tricks and Techniques used/developed by mommy A thru her many years of animal trainin’, cats in purrticular. And to offur insight into your questions about Everything Feline. Always remember, Training is all ‘bout Repetition and Rewards.

Dezi in harness

We started out in the living room and moved to the kitchen and dining room. Last week we focused on the bathroom and laundry room. We didn’t mention medicine cabinets, as most homes these days don’t have one. But don’t worry, we’ll get to that subject as it’s very important. So, today we’re going to cover the bedroom and those extra rooms some have, known as sewing/craft rooms or spare bedrooms. The bedroom has a few areas of concern to watch out for. Closets are always tempting to kitties because they have a door, lots of hanging things and sometimes different levels of shelving. Often times access to the attic/crawl space are located in the closet. Before allowing kitty access to the closet, make sure the crawl space access spot is securely covered. Mommy lived in an apartment once where the neighbors’ kitty used to visit others through the crawl space. This is a very dangerous area for kitty to be. Insulation can contain fiberglass or be treated with toxins.

Dezi lays on bathroom vanity

Bedroom and Closet:

Of course, you may choose to do as mommy does and not allow kitty in the closet. Either way, before closing the closet door and leaving, especially for extended periods of time, always check to make sure kitty didn’t get past you to explore. The same goes for chests and dresser drawers. These spaces filled with comfy clothing of our humans is so very tempting. Many a kitty has spent the day closed up in a drawer because their human didn’t check before closing it.

And of course, don’t forget about all the goodies on top of the chests and dressers, such as perfume, cologne, jewelry and jewelry boxes, coins/money, knick knacks and televisions. Keep jewelry boxes closed and all jewelry stored safely inside. There’s lots of tempting shiny things that kitty may find appealing, but can cause damage if swallowed. Put away spare change, many a kitty/woofy has had to have surgery to remove money from their tummy. Push perfumes and cologne bottles away from the edge as well as any breakable knick knacks. Altho’ kitties are very stealthy and can walk in the tightest of spaces, our tails do occasionally betray us and knock things to the floor. Nope, you didn’t see me’s paw push your antique photo frame off the dresser.

Dezi lays on the bed and looks into the camera

Night Stand or Table:

Let’s not forget about the night stand/table located next to the bed. You know, the one with that obnoxious alarm on it? Sometimes peeps like to read before going to bed, so the night stand/table can often contain reading glasses, lamps, a drinking glass, and medicine/cough drops during times of illness. We covered cords in Pt. 1 of Kitten/Cat proofing, so we won’t cover that again. If you have a drink before bed, remember not to leave alcoholic beverages unattended on the night stand/table. Alcohol is toxic to both cats and dogs. If possible, use a plastic cup containing only water just in case kitty/woofy decides to have a drink and pushes it off the table during the night.

Medications:

NEVER leave any medication unattended or within kitty’s reach. Assume all meds are toxic and store appropriately. Cough drops and cough syrups usually contain codeine or some other form of depressant/alcohol. Keep them in the night stand drawer or a cabinet. If you think kitty has gotten into any medication, call your V-E-T immediately.

Dezi sits pretty on the scratcher

Sewing/Crafting/Spare Room:

The last room we’ll talk about today is the spare/sewing/crafting/art room. Kitties love strings, so we definitely love thread. We don’t have a specific room for these things in our house, but mommy does have a sewing area complete with sewing machine, supplies like needles, threads, pins and pin cushion, scissors, elastic, zippers, tape, glue, paint, brushes and other items. There’s more than one needle with a left over piece of thread stored in it. If these items aren’t put away and stored in a closed container, they can be deadly to kitties and doggies, not to mention small children.

Always unplug the foot pedal to your sewing machine when it’s not in use. We also recommend covering your sewing machine so that kitty isn’t tempted to check it out. Pick up any errant pieces of thread and throw them out. Crafters, never leave a hot glue gun unattended and put your supplies away in a closed container when finished or taking a break. Be mindful of the products you are using. Some should only be used in well ventilated areas. When using these kinds of products, keep kitty out of the area. Our lungs are much smaller than a humans and can succumb to toxic fumes much quicker. Keep buttons, sequins, glitter and other small accessories stored in closed containers and only take out what you can work with at one time. Mommy also paints. It’s important to keep paints and paint brushes in a closed container especially when not in use. Put canvases or other painted pieces out of kitty’s reach to dry.

Dezi lays on liberty tree and Raena on the small perch looking at each other in front of the door.

Well, there sure are a lot of dangers ‘round the house.Unfurtunately, peeps offen overlook a lot of these till it’s too late. Anyways, we’ll be wrappin’ this topic up next week when we take a look at the garage, yard and furinally our toys. Can you believe there are dangers in the very toys intended fur us to play with? Well, join us next week and find out. In the meantime, we’re joinin’ Comedy Plus fur Feline Furiday. Don’t furget to leave you questions and topic suggestions in the comments below or by sendin’ us an email via our contact page. And, you can ketch up on any post in the series by clickin’ the links on our Training Tips and Everything Feline page.

Blest Sunday: We Are SupawStars

MeOW C’mon Raena, it’s time fur our Blest Sunday posty. We’ve got so much to meow ‘bout today. And, we’re furinally rested up after havin’ stayed up all night and day fur 3 nights and 4 days straight with mommy. Altho’ ifin me’s meowin’ the truth, me must admit we all had a few cat naps in the sittin’ chair. Me’s purretty sure me heard mommy snorin’ a time or two befur joltin’ herself awake. Mommy keeps sayin’ she’s gettin’ to old fur these all nighters, and me totally agrees. Me’s way to old to be stayin’ up that many hours a day. Doesn’t she know us kitties need our beauty naps? Hmmmpht  Me must’ve looked like somethin’ an old tabby cat would’a drug in after the second night, and me wouldn’t even wanna know what me must’ve looked like after the third.

Blest Sunday purple kitty clip art graphic

Yeah sissy, I’s not a big fan of the all nighters. I’s need mine’s mommy and me cuddle time in the bed on the nice soft sweet smellin’ sheets. But, it seems the denture man at the new dentist office only comes once a week fur a couple of hours in the meownin’, so mommy has to be there really early so he can take the impressions back to the City with him. And since summer furinally arrived, mommy tries to do things either early in the day or late, so we’re not outside durin’ the hottest pawrt of the day. We’re so very fanky fankful to have air conditionin’ in the car, but mommy says nuffin’ works all that great in triple digit heat and she doesn’t want us to get sick and over heated.

Dezi lays on scratcher licking paw

Me’s a real mess. Me needs a good bath and a year of naps.

Yep Raena, we’re so Blest to have a mommy that cares ‘bout our well bein’ so much. Me’s so happy to have her as a mommy.

Really sissy? Cuz that’s not what you were meowin’ Furiday when mommy harnessed you up and strapped you into the stroller.

Dezi lays in stroller with tiger kitty holster harness on.

Me doesn’t wanna go to the V-E-T mommy.

Well Raena, me doesn’t ‘member you bein’ too happy ‘bout goin’ to the V-E-T the other day either. Me’s on to mommy’s tricks. She may call it a mommy and me day out, but when she’s all sneaky ‘bout the leavin’ time, me knows it can only mean one thing…Doctor Grabby and Stabby. Fankfully, me only got one jab and mommy says so long as me stays healthy, it’ll be the last stab fur 3 years. Seems Doctor Grabby and Stabby has furinally agreed to give us the 3 year rabies vaccination ‘stead of the one year.

Uh, Us, sissy? Wha’ch’a meowin’ ‘bout, us? I’s didn’t get jabbed with anythin’ on mine’s trip.

Dezi climbs out of stroller at the Vet's office

Maybe me can make me’s escape befur anypawdy sees me.

Just you wait Raena, your time’s a’comin’. Anyways, Doctor Grabby and Stabby said me was healthy and looked good. ‘Course, that made mommy really happy. So happy in fact, we stopped by the pet store fur some goodies. Mommy was gonna buy us 1 bag of those cheap treats (Kittles) we’ve eaten in the past, but they were on clearance fur .70¢, so she bought every bag they had.

Really sissy? Every bag? What do you wanna bet that we won’t eat any of ‘em? That’s the kitty way, right? Kitty likes somethin’, human goes nuts and buys out the store and kitty won’t touch it again. That’s one of the furst lessons you taught me.

Dezi lays on the table at the vet's office

C’mon mommy, me feels great. Let’s get outta here befur

somepawdy comes in.

Yeah Raena, that’s the rule. But, me thinks we oughtta at least eat a few bites to show our gratitude fur mommy at least tryin’. That’s another thing we kitties do. You know, gotta keep mommy on her toes and all.

Raena looks back from her dinner plate

Okay sissy, that sounds like a great plan. Ya’ know, we need to say a meowsy big Fanky fank you to awnty Susan fur the green papers. Havin’ so many ‘pointments out of town last week they came in really handy when mommy had to buy gas to get the car down the road. Hey, meowin’ of fanky fanks, I’s saw our furiend Valentine the handsum black Persian from Noir Kitty Mews, nominated us fur an award today.

SupawStar Blog Award Badge

Me saw it too Raena. He nominated us fur the SupawStars Spotlight Award. We’re so honored, fank you Valentine. We’re s’posed to nominate 5 bloggies to receive this award.

SupawStar Award Badge,

Only 5 sissy? Kittens!!! That’s so hard, we think all our furiends are SupawStars. Ya’ know, we don’t know fur sure who purrticipates in these kinds of things, so ifin we nominate you, you’re not obligated in any way to post; we’d just like to let others know ‘bout how special you are. Mine’s furst nomination is:

1.  Awnty Paulette from The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap. She’s a great writer who uses the proceeds from her book sales to help rescue doggies.

2.  Feline Opines is mine’s second nomination. They’re a great bunch of kittes who recently wrote their own book, a devotional from a kitty’s point of view. Once things settle down a bit ‘round here, we’ll be havin’ ‘em over fur a play date to discuss said book. In the meantime, head over and check ‘em out.

It’s me’s turn Raena. Technically, me should’a went furst. Anyways…

3.  Brian and the gang always bring a smile and they do so much to help kitties in need.

And…

4.  Hairballs and Hissyfits almost always make us laugh.

And last but certainly not least is:

5.  Da Phenny and his new housemate, Neilson. Ifin ya’ wanna laugh till ya’ cry and piddle in your pants, you can’t miss their bloggy.

I’s wanna pick some more furiends sissy. Who made these rules anyhow? Only 5…Hmmmpht!!!

Dezi rolls on yeowww nip heart

Yeah Raena, we have so many pawsum furiends and the truth is, we think you’re all SupawStars. So, even ifin we didn’t lest you, purrlease feel furee to take the SupawStar award and post it on your bloggy. And ‘member to nominate 5 SupawStars of your own. We better get this wrapped up so we can try to visit our furiends and get caught up. But furst, we’d like to remind everypawdy to take a minute today and every day to give Thanks fur the Blessings in your life. You are all one of our greatest blessings and we fank God each and every day fur each of you.

Raena sits in tiger kitty holster cat harness

Last week we started a mini-series on Kitten/Cat Proofing your home. Most of these tips are also good for puppy/dog proofing as well. You can read Pt. 1 here. Cats are curious by nature, and that can spell trouble if we get into something we’re not supposed too. Like two legged children, we rely on you, our human to make sure our home and surroundings are safe for us. We started inside the house since we think it’s important for kitties to live inside. It’s just too dangerous for kitty to be outside roaming the streets.

Dezi lays on shower bench

The Bathroom and Laundry room:

Let’s take a look at the safety issues in the Bathroom/Laundry room. Now, we know that not all laundry rooms are in the bathroom, but clumping them together just seems natural. After all what other 2 rooms are designed for cleaning something dirty? Anyways, whether you have a vanity or just a sink, be prepared to find kitty lounging about the porcelain on those really hot days of summer. Mommy prefers cleaning with steam, but she also makes a homemade all purpose cleaner using 1/2 cup of Vinegar, 1 Tbsp. of Dawn dish detergent and water in a 16 oz. spray bottle. Mommy’s also used this same concoction to mop the floors, clean mirrors and windows. It’s a great all natural and safe cleaner. If you use bleach or other harsh chemicals for cleaning, be sure to store them out of kitty’s reach and rinse all surfaces thoroughly after cleaning. Remember, kitty will walk across most surfaces and then lick their paws.

Keep the toilet seat down, especially if you have or plan on adopting small kittens. Did you know one can actually drown in as little as 1 inch of water? So please keep that toilet seat in the downward position. We don’t recommend using those leave in toilet bowl cleaners just in case you or perhaps company forgets and leaves the toilet seat up. Accidents happen and it only takes one time to turn your life upside down.

Most laundry rooms have a small shelf up high for storing dangerous chemicals. Always keep washing machine and dryer doors closed and check and double check before turning them on. It’s a good idea to have a vent cover over the dryer exhaust vent outside to keep small animals and cats from trying to crawl in that way. If you don’t have a dryer but have the vent, it should be covered from the inside too. The exhaust vent isn’t meant to be a kitty/doggy door.

You should also store human soaps, shampoos and conditioners closed and out of kitty’s reach. Altho’ most of these won’t kill kitty, they could result in sickness or other long term health diseases. If you’re a bath taker, never leave kitty/woofy unattended with a full tub of water. Do Not use human bubble baths, bath oils or bombs when bathing kitty/doggy. Please be careful when using products like hair spray, deodorants, perfumes, hair dyes, lotions, toothpaste and other hygiene and grooming products. Never use them directly on kitty/woofy and be careful they don’t get caught in 2nd hand sprays or applications. Only use toothpastes and shampoos specifically made for kitty/woofy.

Raena lays on shower bench

The bathroom probably has the fewest electric outlets and the most hanging cords in the house. Blow dryers, curling/straight irons, shavers, toothbrushes, and other small appliances can all be shock hazards. Make sure all cords are properly stored and unplugged. Remember, kittens get into everything, and even older cats are curious about new surroundings and things. Keep trash cans covered or under the sink if possible. Bathrooms that come with windows, usually have very small ones, none the less, keep them closed or at least keep an eye on kitty so he/she doesn’t try to get out of it or fall out by accident.

One last thing before we leave the bathroom as we have personal experience with this one. Any over the toilet storage/shelving units should be anchored to the wall or have a sturdy base that allows it to be a stand alone product. Choose non glass items to display on the shelves. You never know when kitty’s curiosity might get the best of him/her and the unit including all it’s contents come crashing to the floor.

Raena close up of eyes-blooper

Can you believe it? Mommy cut half mine’s face off and

got all that goopy stuff in mine’s eyes. Just one of the many bloopers we have.

Well, fur the smallest rooms in the house, they sure do have a lot of dangers. MOL Anyways, we’ve got just a few more rooms befur we’re finished. So, get your questions and topic suggestions in now. And don’t furget, you can ketch un on any post on this series by clickin’ the links on our Training Tips and Everything Feline page from the menu above. We’re gonna be joinin’ Comedy Plus fur Feline Furiday and the Cuddlywumps fur Pet Photo Fails and Bloopers. And do we ever have bloopers. ‘Course, we wouldn’t x’pect anythin’ else with mommy behind the camera. MOL  We plan on sleepin’ soon and we’re not settin’ any alarms. So, we’ll be ‘round to visit just as soon as we can.
